Introduction

Dear Parent / Carer,

Last week the government announced that all children and young people will return to school, full time, from September. This decision has been driven by a decrease in the number of Covid-19 cases, together with the “test and trace” system which is now up and running. Public Health England has also made clear that the risk to children continues to be low. I know many of you will have concerns about the reopening of school and I hope this booklet will help.

When school reopens, we will be providing a full curriculum with no reduction in teaching time. We will be carrying out detailed risk assessments, which will be shared with you, and putting in place all measures expected of us to keep our community safe.

Our expectation is that every child returns to school. The Government has made clear that attendance will be mandatory for all pupils. This means all children are expected to return to school.

We have planned for a phased start to the year in order that we can best prepare staff and students for how we intend to operate from the outset and what we expect of each other in doing so. Safety is of the utmost importance. Therefore, we have decided to delay opening of the school depending on which year group students are in from September. Details are as follows:

Thurs 3rd, Fri 4th, Mon 7th September

Contained within this booklet is information about how we intend the school to operate each day. Students will learn within year group bubbles. Each year group will be based within an area of school, as you will see as you look through the information. Please read it carefully so that your child knows exactly what to do, where to go and what is expected of them upon their return. For instance, they must know where their bubble will be based, which entrance of school to use, the arrangements for break and lunch and how to exit the building safely at the end of the day. We hope that all the information you require is set out clearly for you to go through over the summer.

We recognise the impact that this prolonged period away from school will have had on our community. We all know how hard students have tried to maintain learning at home within the context of their families. We have learned a great deal about Blended Learning, whilst off, and we are better placed to make use of technology such as Class Charts going forward. Indeed, we see this as an opportunity to enhance our work when we return.

We cannot predict what further guidance will be in place for September or when it will be announced but we will keep you up to date with our plans as they develop.

School has provided a provision since the 23rd March, initially at Beckfoot Heaton Primary School and since the 15th of June on site and will be closed to everyone over the summer. Staff, students, parents/carers and families need a break. We must be ready for the Autumn term and to ensure our students are going to flourish. That is our collective ambition.

We are hugely excited to see everyone again in September. We have missed the buzz of our school and the daily interactions with students. It has not been the same.

Please continue to stay safe at home and take care of those around you.

Graeme Wrightson Headteacher

Bubbles

The Guidance for the Full Opening of Schools is clear that in order to ensure the safety of students and staff we must operate in ‘bubbles’. The bubbles will have minimal contact with other bubbles in school. These bubbles can be as big as an entire year group but where possible should be smaller. We have decided to set up the Beckfoot Upper Heaton bubbles in the following way.

Year 7, 8 and 9 Each year group as a whole is a bubble - they will have a designated area of the school that only they access.

Year 7 – Four classes in the Design Technology area on the Ground Floor and three in the English area on the First floor, including foundation class

Year 8 –All on the First Floor in the Maths & English areas, including foundation class

Year 9 –Five on the First floor in the Maths & English areas with two on the Second floor, Humanities, Science & IT area, including foundation class

Years 10 and 11 We will treat the entire year groups as two separate bubbles (year 10 and year 11).

We have taken this decision to ensure that every student can still follow their personalised curriculum pathway.

We have assigned each year group a designated area of the school.

Year 10 – Second floor, Humanities, Science & IT area

Year 11 – Second floor, Science area, with the use of the DT workshop.

Wave 4 There will be a bespoke group which will have unique access to new room on Ground Floor

next to Large Group Room Wave 4 rooms for each Year group – these will be the Faculty Work Rooms on each level –

staff will not use these during the entirety of the September Opening Plan

Maps

The maps on the following pages show each area of the school and where each year group will be situated.

Structure of the Day

Start of the Day There will be a five-minute staggered start to classes, (see below)

Students will access the school site from the usual Thorn Lane (Haworth Road) entrance.

The main student access path will be divided into two, directing students to walk down either side until they arrive at the playground where they will see a red line and a white line.

Students should arrive at school in time to allow their walk to the school building, they will not have the opportunity to socialise, or use the canteen / playground.

Students will need to keep to their year group bubble; each year group will be allocated an area within the school to limit movement as much as possible.

Fencing barriers will be added to congestion points to reduce risk of mixing bubbles.

Year 7 to be held in the hall for a short period of time, until all clear to move to classrooms given.

The staggered start times are as follows:

Year Start time

Line to follow

Access Door Access to lesson

7 8.15am RED H Straight to the Main Hall

8 8.20am WHITE Main Student Entrance Stairwell 2 to Floor 1

9 8.30am WHITE Dining hall back doors Dining Hall / Stairwell 2 to Floor 1

10 8.15am RED H Stairwell 1 to Floor 2

11 8.15am RED G Stairwell 3 to Floor 2

PPE When Travelling to School In line with Government guidance, any PPE equipment worn by students or staff whilst travelling to school, will have to be disposed of (or put into a plastic bag for storage and stored until they are off site) at the main gates. Students and staff are free to replace this with another mask.

Entering Through Reception A few of our students will need to access school through the reception area. If your child is included in this, you will be contacted by a member of staff to discuss how this will work.

Please do not try and come into school via reception if you are not contacted. You will be sent round to the student entrances.

Lateness The school gates will be locked at 8:45am. Any student arriving after this time will need to queue

outside of reception following the social distancing signage and wait to be signed in to school by a

member of reception staff. Students will then make their way to their designated bubble.

Travel advice

The Government advice is that students who live close enough to walk or ride a bike into school safely should do so.

Students who will be driven to school, will need to be dropped off at the normal drop off points, at the usual Thorn Lane (Haworth Road) entrance.

School buses will be running as normal from September. West Yorkshire Combined Authority and the DfE have advised schools that students using School Designated Transport must wear a face mask. Students using school buses should avoid sitting with students who are not in their bubble. Students will need to obtain their annual priority bus pass, before 31 July 2020, to ensure access to the school bus service, using the link https://www.wymetro.com/schools/applications/applications-and-renewals-for-september-2020/. Failure to comply with these rules may lead to students not being allowed to use the school bus service.

Students should use the designated school bus service where possible. If students need to travel on public buses they need to follow the current advice and wear a face mask. They must wear face masks and comply with any rules set by the bus company.

The Daily Timetable

The day will need to run slightly differently to normal in order to ensure every year group can have a break and lunch in their year group.

14 | P a g e

While these are all being delivered in standard classrooms, our staff have planned lessons to ensure all content is still covered and that practical sessions are included where possible.

In years 10 and 11 every student will study Maths, English and Science and will then continue to study their chosen options.

Our staff have planned lessons for year 10 to ensure no learning is missed and practical lessons take place as required, not always in their regular rooms. They have also looked at the courses they deliver and planned to deliver the less practical units of work in the first term.

We have ensured, where possible, year 11 students have access to specialised rooms and the equipment they need to complete their courses.

Remote Education

Where a student is unable to attend school due to COVID symptoms, we will be offering access to remote education. Your child's teachers will share the work for the day via Class Charts. Should you need any support with using Class Charts please contact school.

This will also apply if we have to send students home due to closure of a bubble (see reasons for this later on).

Additionally, if the school were advised to close, the following would be put in place:

There would be a seamless transition of the curriculum to the Class Charts programme which would be rolled out to students.

Teachers would continue the lessons prepared for in school on the Class Charts programme

If Class Charts is not available to a student, this would either be made available and / or workbooks would be provided.

Plans for PE PE will be delivered for every student in years 7 to 11.

Students will continue to be taught PE in their bubbles. We have identified different areas for the boys and girls to change whilst remaining in their bubbles. They will then take part in indoor and outdoor PE lessons led by our specialist PE team.

Activities and lessons have been carefully considered to ensure that we comply with all the safety guidelines, including no contact and how equipment can be safely shared. These guidelines are still being developed and we will keep abreast of all changes to ensure that we can provide the best PE experience we can whilst staying safe.

Students will need full PE kit for every PE lesson.

Extra-Curricular Offer A central part of the experience at Beckfoot Upper Heaton is the huge range of extra-curricular experiences we offer. Once we have opened the school up and are happy that everything is running smoothly, we will be starting up as many activities as we safely can. When it becomes clearer what we can do, we will share this with you and encourage as many of our students as possible to get involved. This will include music lessons with peripatetic teachers. We hope these are up and running by October.

Exams

The current advice is that exams for year 10 and 11 will take place as normal throughout the year. This is what we are planning for. The exam boards are currently engaged in a consultation regarding the dates of the exam series and the content of the exams. As we get further clarity from this process we will share this with you and our students.

Access to Toilets and Washrooms

During Lesson Time As usual, during lesson time students will be encouraged not to leave class to access the toilet. If they have to access a toilet at this point, they will be directed to the student toilet within the bubble area.

Students will be provided with hand sanitizer when they arrive back at the lesson.

Break and Lunch Times During break and lunch times, year groups have been assigned to different toilets, these will be the nearest toilets to their servery, with the toilets unisex and assigned to girls / boys within a block.

Enhanced cleaning will take place in between breaks.

Pastoral Support

Each year group have dedicated members of pastoral support. The Personal Development Leaders

for the year group and their Climate for Learning colleagues will be based within the year group

zone. Students will have access to them at break and lunch time.

They will be based on the corridor of their specific year group bubble zone all day.

If you need to speak to a member of the pastoral team, this will need to be done via email or

telephone - we will not be able to accept visitors into school.

Supporting the wellbeing and mental health of students

Supporting the wellbeing, resilience and mental health of our students when they return in September is very important to us. Prior to starting the new academic year, all staff will receive training on ways to recognise wellbeing and/or mental health issues, support students effectively, and signpost to colleagues and/or other services where appropriate and necessary.

All students will be supported by being provided with:

Clear and consistent routines wherever possible. Clear communication and regular reminders of the team around them: their tutor, teachers,

teaching assistants, Climate for Learning staff, Personal Development Leaders and the Senior Leadership Team.

Regular ‘check-ins’ about their wellbeing and mental team from their team. Clear communication and regular reminders of online support services available to students,

including: Cameron Parker, who is a motivational speaker and a TFTF mentor - Frank Makula. Opportunities to talk and to share achievements. Quality teaching that validate their experiences. Recognition of addition stressors and how to address these. Clear and regular communication re-emphasising wellbeing messages.

Safeguarding

All of our staff in school have completed up to date safeguarding training. We also have a team of designated safeguarding staff led by Mr Midgley, (Assistant Headteacher). Our safeguarding processes will run as normal.

Equipment

Students should bring with them

Their lanyard Writing equipment A pencil case A drink in a reusable bottle

A coat A bag PE kit (on PE days) A reading book

We request that students and staff do not bring any equipment in that they do not need. This will minimise the risk of bringing the virus into school.

Students will not have access to a locker as this creates another touch point. Whatever they bring with them will have to be kept with them in lessons.

System of Control Measures

We are putting in place several prevention methods as outlined in the government guidelines (Guidance for the Full Opening of Schools).

1) We will ensure we minimise contact with individuals who are unwell by ensuring that those who have coronavirus (COVID-19) symptoms, or who have someone in their household who does, do not attend school

2) We will ensure students and staff clean hands thoroughly more often than usual including using hand sanitizer. This will include every time they enter the building or a classroom and when they leave a classroom at break time, lunchtime or at the end of school

3) We will ensure good respiratory hygiene is followed by our students and staff by promoting the ‘catch it, bin it, kill it’ approach

4) We will introduce enhanced cleaning, including cleaning frequently touched surfaces often using standard products such as detergents and bleach

5) We will minimise contact between individuals and maintain social distancing wherever possible

6) We will ensure students are not sat facing each other and that desks are spread out in the classroom as far apart as is possible

Supporting SEN learners

Provision for those students who may require additional support linked to their special educational

needs, or to other areas of well-being or vulnerability will continue. School staff will link closely with

families and students as details are finalised so that everyone is kept fully informed and students

feel ready to make a positive return to school at the start of term.

Our planning for foundation and nurture groups in years 7, 8 and 9 remains the same. They will be based in one classroom, where possible, on the same floor as their year group bubble, for the vast majority of lessons, excluding PE, which will be with their Year Group bubble.

TA support will be hovering and/or circulating. Any individual support must be provided from behind or beside the student and will not be face-to-face.

Students with SEND who require the use of a laptop, can continue to access them in lessons. They will be provided with a wipe to clean them down after each use.

Timeout passes are issued by the SENCo only and will continue to be used. These students can only either (a) stand outside their classroom when on timeout or (b) go directly to their pastoral team in the designated areas.

Students with SEND who require intimate care will continue to have this provided by one designated member of staff. We have located the majority of these students on the ground floor to support access to toilets for disabled students.

Students with SEND who usually leave lessons early will continue to do so.

We have based as many wheelchair / walking frame users as possible on the ground floor to

minimise use of and access to the lift. The lift will be used by one wheelchair user at a time.

Attendance expectations

From 1st August, students who have been shielding or self-isolating are able to return to school as

per DFE guidelines (click here for link). The only COVID related reason for non-attendance would be

if you (or a member of your family) are showing symptoms.

100% attendance at school is vital to ensure students’ wellbeing and that they make good progress.

We will be expecting all students to return to Beckfoot Upper Heaton in September. We will need

your support as parents and carers to ensure this happens.

Should your child be too ill to attend school, please contact us on the first day of absence before 8:30am by:

Phone: 01274 493533

Uniform

Students will be expected to attend in full uniform at all times. As with all our school expectations,

Assessment and reporting plans We will be following our regular assessment and reporting calendar. Students will have formal assessments in each subject at the end of each scheme of work. Student reports will be sent home three times a year.

We are not planning any parents’ evenings at the moment based on the guidance we have been provided with. This is due to be reviewed in August and as soon as we know that we are able to hold these events, we will update you.

Fire evacuation plan

In the case of an evacuation, we will follow normal procedures. These are outlined on posters in each classroom. Staff will be updated on changes as part of their training.

First Aid A first aider will be in school at all times.

A designated first aider will be on call via the staff radio. They will go to the student needing first aid.

PPE PPE will only be used in situations where it would normally be used and where a student or staff member shows signs of COVID.

Infection control measures

We have taken our lead directly from the Government guidance document which can be accessed here.

Developing Symptoms Out of School If a student or member of staff develops symptoms compatible with coronavirus while they are not in school (a new, continuous cough or a high temperature, or has a loss of, or change in, their normal sense of taste or smell [anosmia]) they must not attend school. We would expect them to inform school and book a test. They would not attend school again until the test result returns as negative or, if it is positive, until they have completed 7 days of self-isolation and are free of the symptoms (other than a cough or loss of smell as these symptoms can go on for several weeks after the infection has gone). Please see the government’s explanatory diagram on these guidelines on the next page.

If a member of a student or staff household develop symptoms, we would expect the student or staff member to inform us immediately and then self-isolate for 14 days.

Developing Symptoms in School If a student or member of staff develops symptoms compatible with coronavirus while they are in school (a new, continuous cough or a high temperature, or has a loss of, or change in, their normal sense of taste or smell [anosmia]) they will be sent home immediately.

When a student is awaiting collection from school as they have developed symptoms, they will be accompanied to an outside space at the main entrance where they can be isolated, with appropriate adult supervision.

If they need to go to the bathroom while waiting to be collected, they will use the toilet in reception.

PPE will be worn by staff caring for the student while they await collection.

We will expect the student or member of staff to book a test and remain off school while they await results. If the results are negative then they can return to school. If they are positive they would remain in self-isolation until they were symptom free. Parents must contact school to inform of test results.

We will then work with Public Health England to determine our next steps. If we need to close a bubble, we will call all families to inform them and explain their next steps. We will also engage with the NHS Test and Trace process as necessary.

If students are absent from school due to a bubble being closed, we will provide remote education as outlined earlier.
