Our six unique Colleges form one University, ranked number two in the world for Art and Design.* As a postgraduate student at UAL, you’ll become part of a powerful creative network of artists, designers and innovators – each with their own ideas about how to make a difference. *QS World University Rankings by Subject ® 2020
From helping local communities to tackling
the global climate crisis, creative thinkers have
a unique power to come up with innovative
solutions to the world’s problems. Across all
subject areas, UAL staff and students are using
the potential of art, design and the creative
industries to help shape a better future.
As part of our commitment to addressing
the global climate emergency, we’ve pledged
to cut the University’s carbon emissions by
43% between 2013 and 2020. Significant
progress came in 2018, when UAL switched
all of its electricity consumption to 100%
renewable sources.
Students also have their role to play. From creating
inspirational fashion using sustainable materials
to leading projects which encourage eco-friendly
lifestyle choices, they are helping to build a more
sustainable community.
WaterAid Hackathon: The Water Fight
In partnership with the UK charity WaterAid,
UAL’s Post-Grad Community and students
from the MA Design Management course at
London College of Communication produced
an intensive two-day Hackathon.
Bringing together students from across the
University, the event explored how the arts can
be used as a tool in the mission to make clean
water, decent toilets and good hygiene normal
for everyone.
“The event was a fantastic opportunity
to collaborate with people from other
courses! We were able to consider the
issue from multiple different angles,
and it was great to work on a project
that we all felt very passionate about.”

The research of over 250 PhD students at UAL enriches our creative environment, working across the fields of art, design, screen, communication, fashion, media and performing arts. Our world-renowned Colleges form a creative network of artists, designers and innovators. By focusing on new ways of thinking, our research is helping to change the world we live in.
MPhil and PhD qualifications
UAL supports postgraduate research
qualifications and the opportunity they offer to
explore the possibilities of the future. Following
the 2014 Research Excellence Framework,
83% of our research was graded as either
world-leading or internationally excellent.
We offer theoretical and practice-based
research programmes, leading to an MPhil
or PhD. There are currently over 250 research
degree students at UAL who benefit from
full access to cross-College resources,
interdisciplinary dialogue and research
student training.
Collaboration and support
Our PhD student training program, RNUAL
(Research Network UAL), provides lectures and
activities for students to get the most out of
their research. Students gain valuable insight in
order to facilitate a successful research project,
exchange ideas and explore themes.
RNUAL also offers PhD students thesis
advice, research fairs and other useful support
to give them a head start on their research
journey at UAL.

Pushing boundaries
Our research moves beyond traditional
contexts in Art and Design, into new areas
such as creative computing, service and social
design in the health sector, and internationally
funded projects that drive business and
government policy change on a large scale.
Similarly, our academics play a prominent
role in the UK’s creative culture, with research
that enhances public understanding of
major issues and benefits the creative and
cultural industries.
UAL’s cutting-edge research is leading the
way in discovering new solutions and ideas to
help solve global issues. Our nine Research
Centres work to support groups of researchers
across a range of activities and projects.
Our institutes are a place where research,
knowledge exchange and teaching come
together. They focus on using research
insights to open and encourage conversations
that change how practitioners, organisations,
institutions and government bodies operate
and develop. By generating innovative new
approaches, UAL’s institutes encourage
social, environmental, technological and
cultural change.

Because the world needs:to share ideas
UAL is home to over 2,400 creative postgraduate students, offering all kinds of opportunities for collaboration. PhD student Laetitia Forst talks about how getting involved with UAL’s Centre for Circular Design and Post-Grad Community has helped her build a strong network to develop her area of research.
“I started a PhD because I was passionate
about design for sustainability and I wanted to
explore how my textile design practice could
contribute solutions to current environmental
issues. Coming to UAL meant that I could be
part of the Centre for Circular Design, which
was already doing pioneering work in this field.
I expected the PhD journey to be rather
lonely, but in fact I’ve become part of a
vibrant community of researchers and
students. The networks created by UAL’s
Post-Grad Community have really helped.
With their support I’ve worked on a number
of collaborative projects that have been
very rewarding.
I’ve co-run the Circular Design Lab interest
group and There and Back Again symposium
for the last few years, putting together events
and workshops to make our research available
to a wider audience. It’s helped me develop a
community to discuss research ideas and it’s
been a great experience.
At the moment I’m working on my thesis,
so my days involve lots of writing! But it used
to be more varied. A day would generally
involve reading and taking notes on academic
papers, visually mapping the insights to feed
into my research, making samples to test my
ideas or working on a paper or presentation for
a conference.
To get the most out of your postgraduate
experience, make sure you find out about all
of the opportunities available to you. There are
so many training, exhibiting and connecting
events across UAL to benefit from on top of
course work. There are also funding options
to provide support if you have an idea for an
extracurricular project. Get in touch with the
Student Union or look up the UAL Post-Grad
Community Project Fund.”

opportunities and events. This leads to an
informed, connected and confident network of
creative professionals who continue to inspire
each other throughout their careers.
A programme of events encourages skills
sharing, networking, collaboration and new
communities of practice. Events take place at
UAL and further afield, and include talks with
industry specialists, visits to artists’ studios,
curator-led tours and student-led activity.
We support a growing number of issue-
specific, cross-disciplinary groups led by
postgraduate students and academics. These
connect creatives with shared research
interests across different subject areas.
The weekly newsletter shares details of events,

My London storyAnna Tsuda
Anna applied to the MSc Creative
Computing course while in the final year of
her undergraduate degree at Camberwell
College of Arts, where she studied Graphic
Design. Originally from Japan, she has
been overwhelmed by the range of
possibilities and creative opportunities
that London has opened up.
“Coming from a small city in Japan, I used to
have to take the bullet train to Tokyo so I could
attend art, design and tech events, so it’s a
privilege to now have so many opportunities
on my doorstep in London. Going to events
outside of university has helped me to explore
new realms, network with interesting people
and expand my design practice.
I’m still absolutely amazed by the number of
events, meetups and exhibitions constantly
happening in the city. At the beginning of the
year, I got really excited and signed myself
up to a load of extracurricular activities, soon
realising that I had a bit too much on my plate!
I’ve cut down on my commitments now and
I’m focusing on my studies and two part-
time jobs. I feel a lot less overwhelmed! Just
remember to always do what feels right for you
and enjoy every moment.”

Shape your career
Postgraduate study at UAL gives you
the chance to explore new creative
directions and expand your knowledge
through experimentation and discovery.
The experience will open up a world of
opportunities to help you shape your career
or take you down a different path entirely.
Working and studying
Working part-time could help you cover your
living costs and tuition fees, and we have
a number of ways to support you in your
job search. Creative Opportunities is UAL’s
industry jobs and work placement website,
which advertises jobs and paid internships.
Arts Temps provides exciting job opportunities
to UAL students and alumni, offering paid
temporary jobs across UAL, and will soon
be offering roles with external organisations.
Working for Arts Temps gives students
excellent work experience and hands-on
creative opportunities to build their skills

There are limits to the number of hours
international students can work on a study visa,
so you should always check the rules before you
take on a part-time job.
Our alumni network
Armed with a postgraduate qualification from
UAL, you could follow the path of one of our
200,000 alumni to become a pioneer in your
field. Our graduates can be found in every
part of the creative and cultural sectors,
from leading global businesses to working
as self-employed practitioners. They are
celebrated with awards ranging from the
Turner Prize to the Oscars.
Benefits of being part of our Alumni Association
include discounts on fees for postgraduate
and short courses, access to UAL libraries and
exclusive alumni events, the opportunity to
join your local alumni group and invitations to
Careers and Employability workshops.
Start your own business
Many of our postgraduate students choose
to set up their own business, studio or
company after they graduate. We provide a
range of free resources to help our students
achieve their goals, including information about
the practicalities of freelancing; funding and
finance; how to showcase and sell work;
self-promotion; marketing and more.
Students can also pitch for funding to help
start their business.
We also have our very own retail space,
not just a shop. Students and alumni from
across UAL can submit their work to be
considered for sale via open calls. Proceeds
from sales are reinvested into supporting the
next generation of creative students through
UAL’s enterprise learning programme.

My career journeyYoav Segal
Yoav began his Masters degree so he
could refocus his career path and pursue
his ambition of becoming a theatre
designer. At UAL he discovered an artists’
community that felt like home and a course
that has given him the technical skills and
conceptual approach he needs to build his
future success.
“Since I was a kid I’ve adored theatre: the
gripping storytelling, the magic in the air, the
flare and ingenuity of its design. I’ve worked
a lot in the industry since, but I lacked the
precise skills to actually become a designer.
I needed to delve into the technical and
practical aspects of it.
My course has been fantastically hands-on.
My first project has been a whirlwind guide to
all aspects of theatre design, from rigorously
researching a text to learning the fineries of
costume drawing. I’m only halfway through,
but it’s already built my confidence and belief
that I’ll be able to forge a career as a designer.
UAL has so many campuses, lectures,
workshops, technical departments and
experts. Consume as much as possible,
because in the ‘real’ world lots of the skills you
can learn and connections you can make are
hard to come by.”
