LADIES NIGHT OUTSponsored by the Villa Angela Alumnae Association
Call your classmates and female friends! EVERYONE is welcome!Join us for an evening of great friends, wonderful memories, good food, and lots of fun. Plus basket auctions, side boards and 50/25/25 raffles.
Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School Gym18491 Lakeshore Blvd. Cleveland, OH 44119
Thursday, May 1, 2014
Cost: $38/personDoors open at 5:30 p.m. • Dinner at 6:30 p.m.
Call Nancy Naujoks at 216-481-8414 ext. 111 for reservations.
Ladies Night Out started as a small event for women to enjoy an evening with friends, but since its inception in 1997 it has evolved into a major fundraiser that has raised over $100,000. The money raised is split between VASJ and the Ursuline Sisters of Cleveland.
“We decided to give back to the school and the nuns who taught us all and have been such a huge influence in our lives,” says the event chair, Marilyn (Tucci) Belevice ’68.
Newcomers to the event can expect the best basket auction raffle in the area, side boards, 50/25/25 raffles as well as great food from local catering company Tizzanno’s, owned by alumni Michael Tizzanno ’72 and Steven Tizzano ’68. Most important, though, ladies can expect a fun night out with friends.
“This is not just an event for alums,” Belevice says. “It’s an event for your classmates, your girlfriends, your mom – whatever lady is in your life. This is an event for you to enjoy the company of your friends and family.”
Belevice doesn’t plan the event alone – she has a dedicated committee to help. “I’ve got the best committee in town. These girls are absolutely amazing and they make my work easy.”
Even with a great committee, the event is a lot of work, but Belevice continues to come back each year putting her heart and soul into the planning and execution of Ladies Night Out.
“I do it because I love what it does for the school and for the nuns,” Belevice says. “We are the only connection the girls have to VA and I think that is really important.”
Held annually on the first Thursday in May, Ladies Night Out has become a well-attended, highly-anticipated fun event for women in the area.

Remember those reading comprehension tests we took back when we looked like the students pictured on the pages of this magazine? We’d be given a passage to read and then we were challenged to identify the central theme.
Those sometimes baffling tests – so many good choices! – came to mind as I read over the contents of this special issue of VASJ Magazine. What is the central theme?
There are multiple choices, all of them arguably correct: Celebration, Achievement, Generosity, Success. But if I were given the option, the box I’d check is this:
Continuity. The incidentals may have changed over the years
(no more tests on mimeograph paper, for example). But in all the ways that are truly important, today’s VASJ experience is precisely the same as it was for us umpty-ump years ago.
In this issue, we focus on the past as well as the present by saluting both our donors and the students they support. In reading over their reflections about their alma mater, it is impossible to escape the theme of continuity. Students from over the decades express similar thoughts.
My classmates Mike and Gloria Kluse ’69 say: “There was an insistence at St. Joe’s and VA that we live out our Catholic values and those values had a profound effect on our personal and professional lives.”
Casey Timko ’14 says: “My teachers have taught me that if there’s something I want in life I have to work hard to get it. I’ve learned that it’s not going to
be easy but if I work hard I will achieve success.”Clark Kellogg ’79 says: “I am extremely grateful
for the pivotal and positive influence the VASJ family and community had on my personal development and growth.”
Deandre Forte ’14 says: “We’re an enormous family. Our teachers support us. They attend our games and it says we are part of their family.”
While one generation may know it as a French proverb, another generation may know it as lyrics from Bon Jovi: “The more things change, the more they stay the same.”
Or, as the song says: “The same sunrise, it’s just another day.”
Because of you, the sun continues to shine brightly on the Viking Village, where today’s students are mirror images of ourselves. They know, as we know, that we are blessed. They know, as we know, that the privilege of a VASJ education was and is a precious gift.
The gift remains possible thanks to your kindness and, yes, sense of continuity. As my friend Joe Scaminace ’71 says: “The idea of giving back to others for the gifts we’ve been given is rooted deep in our faith. It’s how we show we’re thankful to God for everything we have and everything we’ve accomplished.”
In no small measure, today’s students are your accomplishment. Congratulations and thank you.

For as long as she can remember, VASJ senior Kortni Spates has aspired to be a doctor. “Growing up, I spent a lot of time helping my sick grandma,” Spates says. “I
always knew I wanted to take that path.” To make that dream a reality, she knew she would need
to attend a high school with a strong college-preparatory curriculum that would prepare her academically for medical school. But more than that, she wanted to find a school where she could build personal relationships with her teachers. She wanted to find a school where she would be more than just a number.
Thankfully, she found VASJ. After one visit to the school, Spates could tell VASJ was a perfect fit for her. She could feel the Ursuline and Marianist core values of education which
include academic excellence, emphasis on the individual, women as leaders, faith formation and family spirit.
VASJ has a proud history of excellence in education and an extensive list of teaching legends throughout the school’s history. The current teachers are no exception. VASJ is filled with top-notch educators – legends in the making.
“Catholic educators see teaching as a mission,” says VASJ Dean of Academics and mathematics teacher Megan Scheider. “It’s a calling that there’s something bigger than the paycheck at the end of the day.”
At the heart of what is really important about teaching – caring about the students as if they are family and going above and beyond the call of duty to make sure they succeed – are aspects of the Catholic education at VASJ that haven’t changed over the years.

In VASJ’s smaller environment, teachers are able to build relationships with not only students in their classes, but all of the students in the school.
“We don’t just know the kids in our class, we know all of the kids for all four years while they are here, even when they are not currently in our classrooms,” says Scheider.
“We’re an enormous family,” says senior Deandre Forte. “Our teachers support us. They attend our games and it says we are a part of their family.”
“They don’t just know your name, they know you,” says Spates. “All the teachers I’ve had really care about me as a person and a
student,” says senior Connor Gail. “Walking down the hallway, two or three teachers will ask me about soccer or where I want to go to college.”
It is the personal relationships that allow teachers to be able to detect when something is wrong or students are struggling.
“Our teachers care about their students,” says senior Casey Timko. “When we’re having big problems, they are there for us to help us and they give us life skills, not just academic skills.”
VASJ students today seem to not only desire a quality education but they expect it. They want to be challenged. To be pushed. To be taught to think outside of the box and learn to apply classroom curriculum to the real world.
They don’t want to be coddled or babied. They want to know that when they leave the walls of VASJ, they will be prepared and ready for college and life beyond. Thanks to the outstanding faculty, they know they will be.
“A good teacher is not an easy teacher,” says Spates. “A good teacher is a teacher who pushes you, explains things well and expects you to do what you need to do and is willing to work with you and help you when you need it.”
If that is the criteria, then VASJ is filled with good teachers – teachers who are willing to work with their students during their lunch and after hours to make sure their students will succeed.
Students know they are being prepared for college because they already are taking college courses.
“I know what college classes are like and I know my AP courses are preparing me for college,” says Spates, who already has taken two college courses, one through VASJ’s Post-Secondary Enrollment Options Program with Notre Dame College.
With plans to become a pharmacist, Forte is not afraid of working hard in school. He will be the first to admit, though, that even he needs a little extra patience in the classroom.
“I have a very short attention span,” Forte says. “I have to get up and move and do something to keep my mind focused.”
Thankfully, the teachers at VASJ are willing to work with their students’ different learning styles – true to the Ursuline core value of emphasis on the individual.
“We recognize and work with the differences among our students,” says Scheider. “We don’t have a one-size-fits-all
approach to education. We teach the individual student rather than the class as a whole.”
The teachers at VASJ know that a well-rounded education means more than just high test scores and academic honors.
“Yes, they want to teach the chemical equations and the literature but they are more interested in whether their students are going to be caring, intelligent young adults when they leave here,” says Scheider.
“We need to know the knowledge of a book but they teach us outside of the book, too,” says Timko. “They teach you how to work with different people. You don’t have to like everybody but you have to learn to get along with everybody.”
The teachers at VASJ have high expectations for their students.
“They don’t treat me like a kid,” says Gail. “They give me a lot of respect which has made me more responsible.”
Treating students like the young adults they are and instilling in them the importance of working hard to achieve their goals are lessons that will remain with students long after their time at VASJ is through.
“My teachers have taught me that if there’s something I want in life I have to work hard to get it,” says Timko. “I’ve learned that it’s not going to be easy but if I work hard I will achieve success.”

the 2013 volleyball season was a magical one for Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School.
A strong regular season followed by a dominating run through the postseason took the Vikings on an unforgettable ride through the Medina district, the Solon regional and all the way to Dayton for the Division IV state final four.
The team ended its season by taking the state championship runner-up trophy home to East 185th and Lakeshore Boulevard.
Maria Stein Marion Local defeated the Vikings in three games, 25-16, 25-22, 25-23, to win the Division IV state title. VASJ had lost only one game in six tournament matches prior to the state championship match. The Vikings finished the
season 23-6. The Flyers lost one match all season and ended with a 28-1 mark.
It was VASJ’s second state runner-up trophy in volleyball. The Vikings won second place in the Division III finals in 2006. VASJ won
the state championship in 2001 and 2005, and the Vikings appeared in the final four in 1999.
VASJ was led in the state finals by junior Toni Beuck with 12 kills and 12 digs. Standout senior Danielle Hicks closed her tremendous career at the Viking Village with nine kills and 20 digs. Junior Nicole Cramer dished out 35 assists for the Vikings.
VASJ Coach Mark Royer ’75 was named the News-Herald Coach of the Year after leading the Vikings to the Division IV state title game.
Hicks – the NCL White Division Player of the Year – was named to the News-Herald first team. The senior averaged 3.85 kills per game and was dominant during the playoff run. She was chosen by her teammates as the Most Valuable Player for the season and is a D-I college recruit. Senior libero Casey Timko was named to the News-Herald third team, averaging 5.2 digs per game.
Junior McKenna Walker and Cramer were named to the News-Herald honor roll.
Hicks and Timko are the Vikings’ only two seniors, so expectations will be sky high for an experienced and talented squad to return to Wright State University in 2014.
Senior Co-Captain Casey Timko, VASJ Coach Mark Royer ’75 and senior Co-Captain Danielle Hicks all received news-herald honors.
The Lady Vikings volleyball team proudly display the regional
championship trophy after defeating Tuscarawas Central
Catholic 3-1 in the regional finals held in Solon. It is the first
time VASJ girls volleyball has won this title since 2006.

Turnaround season for Viking football
The 2013 high school football season at the Viking Village turned out to be a renaissance for the proud program.
Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School, which finished 1-9 a year ago, defeated Holy Name on the final Saturday night of the regular season, 55-43, to qualify for the Division VI postseason with nine wins in the regular season. The following week, the Vikings fell at Mogadore, 41-27, in a regional quarterfinal and finished the campaign at 9-2.
VASJ’s lone loss of the regular season came in Week 9 at Cleveland Central Catholic. The Vikings were unbeaten at home in 2013 at Sparky DiBiasio Stadium.
Junior standout Marvelle Ross rushed for 366 yards on 26 carries and scored 6 touchdowns in the win against Holy Name. Ross was one off the school record of 7 TDs in a game.
Ross – who rushed for 1,844 yards – was one of several Vikings to earn numerous postseason honors. Ross was named first-team all News-Herald and was one of five finalists for the Tony Fisher Award. He was also named Division VI Northeast Lakes offensive player of the year and the MVP of the NCL White Division.
Junior quarterback Tre’Von Williams was a first-team all Northeast Lakes selection and a third team all News-Herald pick. Junior standout offensive lineman Kovas Kijauskas was named to the Northeast Lakes District first team and was a third team all News-Herald selection.
Freshman wideout Jaylen Harris and junior two-way starter Erin Williams were both first team all NE Lakes District picks and honorable mention all News-Herald selections.
VASJ Coach John Storey ’59 was named D-VI Northeast Lakes District Coach of the Year and was one of the three finalists for the News-Herald Coach of the Year. Storey credited the coaching staff and the resiliency of the players for never quitting or giving up on the program while going through a difficult 1-9 season in 2012.
VASJ will be a senior-laden group in 2014 with experience, talent and momentum, but the Vikings will be tested by a beefed up schedule that includes the renewal of the neighborhood rivalry with Euclid and a Week 4 game against D-VI powerhouse Kirtland.
The Vikings scored 50 or more points five times in 2013, including a school-record 70 points in a victory over Warren JFK.
The Vikings soccer team won 12 games in the fall and took home the NCL White Division championship.
“The school is in a great position right now, and I want everyone to understand to play soccer at VASJ is a serious thing,” said Coach K.C. Petraitis. “We have a good thing going, and we want to keep it going in the offseason.”
Junior Flint Porter – an honorable mention all News-Herald selection – tied the sectional final game for VASJ and forced the extra session before Oberlin was able to win it in the second OT.
“When we were able to lock up the NCL championship, that’s when I felt we had a special season, but nothing surprised me this year,” Petraitis said. “We expected this team to be good, and I think the kids went out and proved we can play with anybody when we play the way we are capable of playing.”
The Vikings (12-3-1) return most of the NCL championship squad next year – including Porter, freshman Chad Porter, junior Jack Gallagher and junior Daniel Cervenik. Expectations will be high at the Viking Village for another successful fall on the pitch.

Junior standout Marvelle Ross was named Division VI Northeast Lakes offensive player of the year.
Junior Flint Porter received news-herald honorable mention.

My reasons for supporting VASJ, my high school alma mater, are basically threefold. I am extremely grateful for the pivotal and positive influence the VASJ family and community had on my personal development and growth. My experience there was transformative academically, athletically and socially. And spiritual seeds were sown there that germinated later in my life. The memories have faded a bit, but all are fond ones. I appreciate the commitment made to the academic, athletic, social and spiritual development of the student body. And finally, as a follower of Jesus Christ, the Greatest Giver of all time, I am compelled to be a giver of what God has entrusted to me in the areas of time, talent and treasure. Proud to Be A Viking.

Joseph Scaminace ’71Joe is the chief executive officer and chairman of the board of the Om Group, a global technology-based industrial growth company headquartered in Cleveland .
The idea of giving back to others for the gifts we’ve been given is rooted deep in our faith. It’s how we show we’re thankful to God for everything we have and everything we’ve accomplished. “I was hungry and you fed me, I was naked and you clothed me” – these ideals are rooted in our Catholic education and they’ve carried me through my business and professional life. One of the great lessons I learned at St. Joe’s was that every single interaction we have with others is important, regardless of their position or status. The idea of teamwork – working with others to accomplish objectives – was instilled in us as students. And working together for the greater good is just as important now.

Laquita Blockson, Ph.D. ’88Dr . Blockson is an Associate professor of management at Saint leo University in Charleston, South Carolina . She speaks frequently on the subject of entrepreneurial ethics .
As a business professor, I take joy in guiding and leading young adults in their educational development, to help them become skilled professionals, ethical leaders and engaged citizens. In each of my classes, I can tell which of my students had a quality high school education – during which they developed great critical thinking skills, acquired extensive quantitative abilities, and enhanced their oral and written communication skills – from those who did not have such a high school background. I learned immensely during my years as a Villa Angela student; and, as such, I support the efforts of the VASJ faculty and staff to continue the good work of preparing the next generation of students for lifelong learning and success.

As the years have gone by, we’ve stayed in touch with our fellow alums. That connection is important to us. We just knew there was reason to stick around and help in whatever way we could to make sure that the students who came after us would have as much fun and get a great education like ours. Maybe we didn’t take full advantage of it back then, but that’s what happens when you’re young and dumb. But eventually you realize how important your high school experience was. Today’s kids are entitled to all those good things we experienced. In today’s neighborhoods, the sense of community is not as strong as it once was. The students get that feeling of community at VASJ.

The environment at both VA and St. Joe’s was like an extended family. There was a degree of caring and collegiality at the two schools that you generally don’t get in public schools. And of course there was the strong academic program that prepared you for any professional field. Along with the Catholic fundamentals we were taught, we had the whole package. There was an insistence at St. Joe’s and VA that we live out our Catholic values and those values had a profound effect on our personal and professional lives. That’s why we provided a Catholic education for our three children and that’s why we believe it is only right that we give back to continue the tradition for today’s students at VASJ.

Timothy Flannery ’04tim is an associate for Glencoe Capital, a private equity firm focused on acquisitions and growth equity investments . he lives in troy, michigan .
Growing up on the east side of Cleveland, we had a handful of Catholic high schools to choose from. We looked at all of them, but the comfort level at VASJ was the highest and that comfort level continued throughout my four years there. It was a well-rounded experience – a Catholic co-educational school with a wide variety of academic opportunities from AP classes to automotive and engineering. The school set me up for success and got me where I wanted to go. The University of Notre Dame was a goal for me and VASJ got me there. I haven’t lived in Cleveland since high school, but I know the role VASJ continues to serve for the community and it’s important to support.

SJ ’58, ’69: Fr. Ken Templin, SM, who was a guidance counselor at St. Joe’s in the late ’60s, had a mini-reunion with one of his former students, VASJ President Richard Osborne ’69, in late October. The two enjoyed a nostalgic and fun-filled visit during a Marianist conference in Fort Lauderdale. “One of the great perks of my job is that I get to reconnect with so many people who had a major influence on my life,” Osborne said. “I’m glad I had the opportunity to say thanks to Fr. VA ’68: The Villa Angela Academy Class of 1968 held its 45th reunion in the newly established VA Heritage Room at VASJ. The second-floor library space has been refurbished and repainted in colors reminiscent of VA. The reunion was the first event to be held in the space, which will function as the main conference area for the school. The girls of ’68 have taken the lead to complete the design and they are seeking donations of VA memorabilia to preserve the school’s heritage. If you have items you’d like to contribute, please contact Marilyn (Tucci) Belevice at [email protected] or Nancy (Slominski) Naujoks at [email protected].
