Dear Friends, By the time you read this article, we will already be in the season of Advent. What lies ahead will be Christmas, with all its surprises and excitement. But it won‘t be Christmas yet. There will still be waiting to do, and work to do while you wait. I always think that the Church‘s season of Advent speaks to people deeply because it reminds us what life is really like. We‘re always waiting for something or other. People wait to go to school, or college, or they wait to get married. We wait for that great job, or for retirement. Lots of people wait (in good ways and bad ways) to die. There is all this waiting, and there is all the work that goes with it, since we know that what happens if we do absolutely nothing is usually disappointing. Yet generally speaking, what we‘re waiting for is never quite what we get. We can never foresee and prepare for everything. Surprises abound in the lives of most people, though not everyone welcomes them. In the end, what God and we work out together is almost always better than what we thought we wanted to begin with. Of course, I am writing this to you as you begin a call process and seek for a new pastor. With everyone on the synod staff, I look forward to working through the call process with you. There is no telling exactly what awaits you in this process, but it will not be quite what you expect. There will be a lot of work involved, which I hope can be shared in the congregation. Patience will be required from everyone. And when your new pastor arrives, the surprises will just be starting. In Advent we are waiting for the biggest surprise of all, for the news that God has come to be one of us. Every year the announcement is the same, and every year it captures our hearts and changes our imaginations. Christmas is never exactly what we wanted. It is better than we ever knew we hoped for. I pray that as you work and wait through Advent, you come to know more and more deeply the presence of God among you. And I pray that the Messiah‘s birth at Christmas will set you free all over again to follow Him and to find the joy that only serving Him will bring you. CTS Church Council Summary November 8, 2010 There will be a special meeting of Council on Monday, November 29, at 8:00 pm. This will serve as the business portion of the December meeting since the regularly scheduled meeting on December 6 will be devoted to our meeting with the Bishop. Tony noted that the December 6 meeting will cover four areas:

o The call process o Introduction to the synod office o Overview of our 2011 budget for the Bishop o Q and A

Financial—Both Ernie and Chuck reported that October was a good month financially. Through October we are ahead of both our current income and total income goals and have a budget surplus of $3,708.93. Draft budget—Chuck provided Council with a draft budget based on the current pledge level of $161,702, plus an estimate for the outstanding pledges based on this year‘s giving levels. This budget shows a shortfall of nearly $12,000. We discussed some possible cuts, but will discuss this in more detail at our meeting on November 29. Offerings—Council acted to designate the offerings from the Thanksgiving Eve service to Gaithersburg HELP. Snow policy—We discussed our snow policy and noted that we may need to be flexible concerning Sunday morning communion services given the possibility that a supply pastor or interim pastor may be unable to reach CTS depending on the timing and extent of a storm.

Islam 101 The first Islam 101 class that we attended at the Islamic Center of MD, on Woodfield Road, proved to be very informative and enlightening. We had 11 representatives from our parish attending the class, and I have so far received positive feedback from attendees. The course is a continuing class, over the next few months, to provide the basics to non-Muslims. The next class will be Sunday, December 12, at 3:00 p.m. at the center, 19411 Woodfield Rd., (next to Holy Redeemer church). I encourage you to attend this very informative and enlightening series. It is through learning about those of other faiths that trust, understanding and friendship develops. Since the class starts at 3:00 p.m., you will have enough time to attend our congregational meeting on that evening. If you feel that there is not enough time to attend our dinner and meeting and also attend the class, the class will be held every second Sunday of the month at 3:00 p.m. until the series is completed. It is free, and all are welcome. - Jo Johnson

Cracks, Splatz and the Word Congratulations to all of us on a successful stewardship campaign. In 2010 we had 57 pledges. Our 2011 campaign received 56 pledges. Given the transitions within the congregation in 2010 (departing members, new members, employment concerns, etc), this is a major statement of stability going forward. Of those who pledged in 2010 and 2011, 32% are at the same level as last year and a pleasantly surprising 57% are greater than last year. The pledges for 2011 total $167,484. While this is a bit less than we hoped it is a solid commitment and should be sufficient to sustain the Ministry Areas through next year. The Council is busy formulating the budget for 2011 which will be presented for approval at the Congregational Meeting on 12/12. Thank you for your consideration and commitment as we plan for 2011. Ron Backus, Stewardship Coordinator Parish Life Events Our next Congregational Dinner is on Sunday, December 12th at 5pm. For this dinner, the youth will have their annual Chili Cook Off/Cornbread and Chocolate Bake Off mentioned above. Please bless us with your favorite recipe. You just might win! The CTS Advent Party will be on Saturday, December 18th beginning at 7 pm at the home of Ron and Joyce Backus. Ron and Joyce will provide their home and the drinks. Everyone else will provide the food and fellowship. Please let Ron and Joyce know if you plan on attending by phone 301-963-0438 or email [email protected]. On Christmas Eve, Friday, December 24th, we will throw a Birthday Party for baby Jesus in the parlor following the 7pm Christmas Eve Service. No party is complete without pastries and cookies so please let me know if you can help out with the sweets. The only present you need to bring is yourself because we will not be complete without you. Mark your calendars for Saturday, March 5th. We will have our Family Fun Night at 7pm prior to Ash Wednesday and the start of Lent. If y ou have any ideas for this special night, please let me know. Your brother in Christ, Dave Larrabee

Gifts of Hope We give thanks for the many blessings showered upon us and we pray for those in need. During Advent we can assist those in need in a simple way by buying Christmas gifts through Gifts of Hope. The money we spend goes to social ministry organizations, Lutheran camps, and to our companion synods abroad in Namibia, El Salvador, and Slovakia to directly support their programs. Choose those you want to support. Consider what would delight you family and friends. There is a selection of 39 gifts ranging in price from $5 to $250. Review the catalog online at www.GiftsofHopeMetroDC.org or see Terry Fehner for a catalog. Gifts of Hope can be purchased after services each Sunday during the Advent season.

Poinsettias and 2010 Flowers To beautify our sanctuary, we will have poinsettias for the Christmas. Please contribute and mark your contribution for Poinsettias. Also, look for the 2011 flowers calendar in the hall and sign up to sponsor flowers for a Sunday in 2010.

CTS Youth / Young Adult Ministry News December 2010

Faith Talk: Confirmation at Home: The topic of this fall‘s retreat was Lutheran doctrine. Let‘s continue the conversation

of talking about what you think it means to be a Christian with a Lutheran understanding and look at Romans 12:1-3. What are some ways you conform to the ways of the world? What are the ways that you feel expected to conform to the ways of your church? Do you always agree? Do you think the early church members were always in agreement? How about the church during Luther‘s time? In verse 3, Paul also tells the church in Rome ―not to think of yourself more highly than you ought to think‖ (which is another way of saying ―be humble‖). How do you typically respond to controversy? Based on what Paul wrote, how do you think Lutheran Christians should respond to others about disagreements?

Gifts-In-a-Jar (or -In-a Bag) Fundraiser: Order forms are still available on the YM bulletin board for this annual

fundraiser - just in time to help you with any holiday gift-giving dilemmas. Consider ordering a cookie mix for a teacher, a soup mix for a co-worker or a brownie mix thank you. We have some new recipes this year - and some old favorites. Orders are due by Sunday, December 5 @ noon! - and will be ready for delivery at the Congregational meeting Sunday evening, December 12! This is the tenth year for this fundraiser and we appreciate your support!!

YMBA (formerly know as Koinonia Auction Baskets): This is also an annual YM fundraiser and in order for it to

be successful, we need donations of gift baskets (and we use basket in the loosest sense of the word!) There is a sign-up sheet on a bulletin board near you! The Basket Auction will follow the Chili Cook-Off / Cornbread & Chocolate Bake-Off and Congregational Meeting on December 12.

Following the GIAJ assembling, we're going shopping for our Secret Santa youths. We'll start with lunch, so bring some extra dollars to help pay. Please let Barbara know that you're joining us so we have enough drivers! And there may be more – so watch your email and check the website....

Chili Cook-off/Cornbread & Chocolate Bake-off / Youth Ministry Basket Auction Sun, Dec 12 / CTS This is an annual YM fundraising activity that bookends the December Congregational meeting and it really is a lot of fun. The evening starts with plenty of great food with the Chili Cook-Off, Cornbread and Chocolate Bake-Off where diners determine the winning chili, cornbread and chocolate dessert by voting with donations for their favorites and concludes with the auction of talents and gift baskets donated by various CTS groups. The youth will again offer their famous holiday cookie baskets where each youth provides 2-3 dozen or so of their favorite cookies - so come prepared to bid and buy! Sign-up sheets are posted on the youth bulletin board if you're interested in entering your favorite chili, cornbread or chocolate dessert into the competition or offering a ‗basket‘ for the auction. Don't miss this annual event! (Oh yeah, and the congregational meeting is in between!)
