2019 Oregon State Gymnastics Notes

“Celebrating the never ending tradition of Oregon State Ath-letics by continuing to honor its past, educate its present,

and prepare for its future; while connecting all who have

contributed to its legacy.”

In the spirit of camaraderie, Oregon State University’s Varsity OSU Association is dedicated to upholding the long tradition of athletic and academic excellence at Or-egon State. Varsity OSU serves its membership by en-hancing relationships among alumni letter-winners, cur-rent student-athletes, and current and former coaches and administrators.

The #DamWor-thIt Campaign was started last summer to bring awareness to mental health is-sues involving stu-dent-athletes. The program was spear-headed by former Oregon State gym-nast Taylor Ricci, along with current men’s soccer player Nathan Braaten.

The #DamWorthIt Campaign has already received na-tional attention including winning a Giant Steps Award from the Institute For Sport and Social Justice and receiv-ing attention from the NCAA APPLE Conference.

Initiated in 2011, Beavers without Borders is a pro-gram that offers global ser-vice-learning experiences for student-athletes at Oregon State University.

The program has success-fully completed eight service projects including trips to Gua-temala, Macedonia, Ethiopia, Costa Rica and most recently the Dominican Republic.

Throughout those trips, over 100 student-athletes were able to experience life in a distinct culture, learn about the impact of their work on a community and interact outside of the university context to maximize the intercultural ex-perience.

This year marked the second-straight year that Oregon State Athletics has sponsored two Beavers Without Bor-ders trips. In June, 12 athletes made the trip to the Domin-can Republic, with another 12 heading to Guatemala in August. The full list is below:

NEW LAYOUTOregon State gymnastics will unveil a new fl oor lay-out this week against UCLA. The Beavers host NCAA Regionals in April when four judges will preside over each apparatus. To accommodate judges on each side of the vault table, OSU will move the vault from the south side of Gill Coliseum to the north side and the scorer’s table from the north to the south ... the vault table will now be situated in the northeast cor-ner of Gill near the uneven bars dismount area.

THE BRUINS• UCLA senior Katelyn Ohashi went viral three weeks ago, totaling 109 million views of her perfect 10 fl oor routine from Jan. 12 (42M on Twitter, 35M on Face-book and 32M on YouTube).• The Bruins have three perfect 10s already in 2019. Kyla Ross achieved a perfect 10 on the uneven bars in the season-opener against Nebraska ... Katelyn Ohashi followed with her own 10 two rotations later on the fl oor exercise ... Madison Kocian earned a perfect 10 on the bars on Jan. 21.• UCLA also boasts a pair of gold medal winning Olympians in Madison Kocian and Kyla Ross. Ross earned her medal as a member of the Fierce Five in 2012, while Kocian won team gold in 2016 as a member of the Final Five.• The Bruins have opened the season 6-0 and are coming off a win at Stanford, 197.225-195.125.• UCLA has scored 49+ in 75 straight rotations dating back to the 2018 season opener.

QUICK STICKS• All four of OSU’s lineups are currently ranked among the top 25 in the nation. The fl oor lineup is the highest ranked for the Beavers at No. 6 (49.175, season average), beam is next at No. 17 (48.842), bars is tied for 24th (48.717) and vault ranks 25th (48.858).• Oregon State has ‘hit’ 92 out of 96 (95.8%) routines in 2018.• Oregon State opened the season on the road for the third straight season ... the Beavers now have a 5-0 record in those road season-openers.• Eleven of OSU’s 15 regular season opponents on the 2019 schedule are ranked in this week’s Top 36, including three among the top fi ve.• Oregon State hosts NCAA Regionals April 4-6. It is the fi rst time OSU has hosted the regional round since 2013 ... this year’s regional will be the fi rst season with the new format that includes three days (four meets) of competition.• Seventeen OSU gymnasts earned a 3.0 GPA or better during fall term - 11 of those were 3.5 or above in-cluding two 4.0s. The Beavers represent seven diff erent colleges among their majors and two study in the Honors College.

LAST WEEK AT WASHINGTON• Oregon State notched a season-high 196.100 despite to knock off then-No. 11 Washington (195.900) in Seattle.• OSU scored 49+ points on the fl oor exercise (49.175) for the third consecutive week and now ranks No. 6 in the nation on the apparatus.• The Beavers also registered a season-high 49.275 on the balance beam to win the meet.• Junior Maela Lazaro established a new career-high with a 9.925 in the anchor spot of the beam lineup to secure the win in Seattle. Along the way, Yanish produced career-bests on the bars (9.75) and beam (9.80) and season-highs on vault (9.80) and fl oor (9.90).• Freshman Madi Dagen continued her strong start to her OSU career setting a personal-mark on the beam (9.85) and tying her high on the vault (9.825).
