A legendary road connecting Asia and
Europe, whose story begins 2,200 years ago…
In China, beauty is deeply influenced and inspired
by the principles of Taoism, Buddhism and
Confucianism. Here more than anywhere else,
spirit and soul are deeply linked.
According to the Taoist tradition, there is a
fundamental element in the universe: the vital
breath (the qi). Channeling the qi ensures balance
between the yin (feminine) and the yang
(masculine), two complementary and necessary
virtues for harmony and beauty.
All the remedies of Traditional Chinese Medicine
(TCM) aim to restore and maintain this harmony.
Chinese emperors were famous for their large
harems of concubines composed of beautiful
young women necessary to balance their yin
energy.
Before joining the emperor, concubines followed a
strict beauty ritual to make their skin complexion
as pure and delicate as fine porcelain, redden
their lips and the tip of the tongue with carmine.

THE RITUAL Tea ceremony, a communion with Nature
INSPIRING CHINESE RITUAL #1
GONG FU CHA
The tea plant Camellia sinensis L., cháshù in Chinese, is
emblematic of the Middle Kingdom where it first originated.
At that time, it was cultivated mainly as an herbal medicine
within temples. Monks began to use tea for its soothing and
calming effects and as a sign of humility and respect for
nature. Tea then spread throughout Chinese society and is
appreciated for its personality, which is connected to its
region of origin, its terroir. Oolong, Souchong or Yin Zhen:
each variety reveals its own aromas.
Gong Fu Cha is the Chinese Tea ceremony, a moment of
pure communion with nature, pleasure and freedom.
To seduce their lovers, Chinese women used to wet their skin
with the precious beverage.
Under the Song Dynasty (960 – 1279), the rare and precious
white tea was harvested with a pair of silver scissors by
young and delicate girls in the high mountains of the Fujian
Province. The bud, soft as silk, was added to the bath of the
concubines.

THE RITUAL Secrets of the Four Great Beauties
INSPIRING CHINESE RITUAL #2
YANG’S SECRETS
Yang Guifei was one of the four Beauties of Chinese
Antiquity. She was the favorite concubine of the
emperor Xuanzong who reigned in the Middle
Kingdom from 712 to 756, under the Tang dynasty.
They were inseparable.
At this time, women could live in a peaceful social
environment and could enjoy a certain degree of
independence.
Yang Guifei was extraordinarily beautiful and was
said to have a face that puts all flowers to shame.
She was also a wonderful dancer and musician.
To keep her skin complexion as pure and delicate as
porcelain and avoid redness, the concubine would
clean her face every day with a potion of bamboo
shoots and lotus petals carefully infused in water.
She also used Ginseng, the plant with a thousand
virtues.
