Sail- fish had no cockpit and the skipper sat on a flat deck on a section of non-skid paint with a foot under a hiking strap tied between two small side rails. The rig was just like the current Sunfish. This was the first boat that many Beaufort youngsters learned to sail back then and we had a ball! Just watching the action and listening to the happy noise of the kids was a great reminder of what BYSC is all about- a place to have fun and enjoy each other. I hope this will continue to be an annual event as we close out our summer and kids head back to school. If you haven’t taken a look at our online directory, go to the club website and check it out. John and Erica Dickerson have taken photographs and Catherine and Andy Lyons, through the Auxiliary Committee, have gotten it done. But we really need for many more mem- bers to have their pictures taken so we can have a com- plete directory for all to use. There is a password re- quired so that only club members will have access, but this is a good way for our membership to be able to put names with faces as we get to know each other better. The pool will be closing soon for the season as the weather cools, but there are plenty of fall activities to look forward to. The Labor Day picnic, the fall races, the race around Parris Island, the Change of Watch Oyster Roast, and of course cooler weather on the tennis courts are all events to look forward to and enjoy. Fall in Beaufort is my favorite time of year. Come on out and enjoy it at your club. Andy Kinghorn 2012 Commodore October September November

The Fall Series starts this Labor Day weekend!

Skippers meeting is 11:30am Sunday. There is no skippers meeting Monday.

First race Sunday is 2pm, while the first race Monday is 1pm.

We are still looking for a PRO to run the Sunday and Monday races. Also, on Sunday the MC Scow's are responsible for setting up the mark boats and getting the gear and marks moved down the dock. On Monday, this responsibility is on the Optimist fleet. Please see the sign up sheet on the back porch and help fill in the empty spots. If you would like to

help with registration Sunday or Monday at 11am, please contact Chris Duer. Sailing instructions are available at byscnet.com

The PHRF Fall Series on Friday evenings begins on September 7 and runs through

October 5. BYSC has amassed a large PHRF fleet, which has allowed us the opportunity to break into 2 fleets for die-hard race boats and cruising boats. The BYSC website has

more information on how to register.

See everyone on the water! Chris Duer 2012 Fleet Captain [email protected]

AUXILIARY COMMITTEE REPORT

“To promote the social enjoyment, fellowship, and the general welfare and beautification of the Beaufort Yacht & Sailing Club”.

This month's Auxiliary meeting on Thursday, September 20th at 6pm is going to feature a Thai

food Dinner! If you haven't come to one of these fun meetings yet, this is the one to try. We mix good food and a fun social time with the exchange of great ideas that are making our club the best place to

be in Beaufort. Everyone is welcome.

The kitchen project continues and this past month multiple hard working Auxiliary members are to be thanked. Dave Tindall and Bill Hennigh worked tirelessly with David Dixon refinishing all the kitchen cabinets, spray painting inside and out. The new paint and hardware look wonderful. Then in came a

team of workers who sorted through all the over abundance of kitchen items amassed over the years and organized the kitchen to be much more user-friendly in the future. Thanks to Kristi Rushing, Angie

Williams, Joan Dechovitz for taking on this job.

All the cleaning up of brush and new landscaping around the new gate and some by the pool has been headed by Chuck & Kristi Rushing with a team of supporters made up of Frank Pontious, Sam Levin,

Steve Weeks, Howard Hart, Hamp Simkins, Bill Ballard, Paul Keyserling, Mark & Clark Henderson, and Reggie & Linda Fraser, who also donated some plants for the cause. It looks wonderful! Also, a couple of weeks ago I caught Reggie Fraser and Jim Fillion weeding the newly landscaped planted area around the flagpole while they were waiting on the tide level to complete their boating projects. That kind of

pride in the club is very heart-warming.

The new on-line digital membership directory is up and running on our club website BYSCNET.COM in a "Member's only" access area. If you can't remember the password that was e-mailed to you to gain ac-

cess, give Bo or David a call.

Monthly tidbits: Catherine Lyons and Sheila Tindall will have a table set-up with BYSC logo'd Mer-chandise for sale on Monday afternoon of the Labor Day Picnic. Make sure you come and check out the stylish new items. Merilyn & Calvin Smith are coordinating weekday “game days” starting in the fall, so

get your game face on.

Susan Cosby is heading up coordinating the Auxiliary's help with the Change of Watch party Nov 10th. There is a sign-up sheet for volunteers on the back porch. Alternatively, you can come to the

next Aux meeting Sept 20th to get involved or contact Susan directly, sailsew8@gmail if you would like to help out with this highlight of the club's social calendar event.

We will also be looking for help with the shore-side support of the JY15 North American Champion-ship Regatta that BYSC is hosting Nov 10-12h.

Hope to see everyone Sept 20th !!

Sue Hamilton, President Lisa Presnell, Vice president Angie Williams, Secretary

Kristi Rushing, Treasurer Carey Kerney, Social Nelson Brown, Board member

The Fall PHRF series will be upon us sooner than you think! We start at 17:30 on Friday, Sept 7th, with a captains meeting on the dock

at 16:15 before the first race. As can be seen from the text below – it was decided to divide the PHRF Series into two

classes. The reasoning behind this is to encourage even more owners to try their hand at racing. The series has gone from strength to strength since inception in 2010, with average 3-4 boats then to 8-9 racing at any one time now. It is hoped that even more cruising “big

boats” will participate in the series. It is understandable that owners of a boats used primar-ily for cruising may be reluctant to remove all the cruising “stuff” before every race…only to have to replace it all again to go cruising. So class “B” should be ideal for those folks. If they

get the “bug” for racing and want to get more (serious) they can move to class “A” when they feel comfortable doing so. “Notice of Race” and registration forms will be going out

soon. Feel free to contact me in the meantime. Everett Ballenger (Class Captain) at [email protected] or 521-7977.

BYSC PHRF Class Regulations.

Class “A” is suited for boats designed for racing such as J – Boats…boats that have been updated and upgraded to comply with that boat’s racing class regulations, any

“cruising” type boat may enter if they so wish. Boats are allowed to use spinnakers or Gen-naker’s with suitable PHRF rating adjustments. “Hi-tech” sails are allowed, but shall not be over-sized per PHRF size regulations, or that boats class racing regulations, otherwise they will receive an associated ratings adjustment. All boats must have a U.S. Sailing PHRF rat-ing; if no rating is available a separate rating certificate should be supplied. Each series will

be governed by the rules as defined in the Racing Rules of Sailing.

Class “B” is for cruisers or new racers with boats not normally used for racing, and are mainly used for cruising rather than racing. The class is designed to encourage “cruising”

type boats into racing. Other class requirements include: no spinnakers or free-flying sails or staysails, no Hi - tech sails such as Mylar or Kevlar. The original type and size sails should be used. The series winning boat will be moved to class “A” for the following series. After that it will be the owner’s choice whether to remain in class “A” or return to class “B” All

boats must have a U.S. Sailing PHRF rating; if no rating is available a separate rating certifi-cate should be supplied. Each series will be governed by the rules as defined in the Racing

Rules of Sailing.

Help us Market BYSC Please help the Board in creating new advertising for the Club. Each year BYSC must recruit about 25-30

new families to replace turnover. The Board would also like to grow membership about 15% to improve the Club's finances. We hope you've noticed our recent new ads. If you have pictures of Club activities that convey

the special character of our members and the enjoyment we derive from the Club's activities, events, and facilities, please share them by sending a copy to

Alan Dechovitz at [email protected].

Also, we would welcome ideas for a club tag line. Tag lines convey the special character or emotion about a brand > "Choosey mother's choose Jif" "Ford - Built for the Road Ahead" "Kodak - Share Life".

If you have a phrase or concept that summarizes all we are to you, please share it with us at the email above.
