Biography

Beatriz Mínguez is a visual artist and architect. She lives in Barcelona and Madrid.

“Her work operates in the weightless and immaterial space of water, in relation to the body and the perception of them. Her research revolve around the notions of relationships between human being and nature, nature as a landscape or as energy and time, whether between different characters sharing a family meal, or a constellation of pixels.Everything has both a specific point of view but abstract at the same time, poetic and even sometimes stark. ”(Joaquim Ruiz-Millet - H2O Gallery)

In her work she combines different disciplines: video, photography, video installations and sculpture.

Her videos and installations regularly participate in international film and video art festivals(FIVA, File.org, Bideodromo, Bugarte Film and Visual Arts Festival, Loop, Figueira Art Film Festival,In Pieces of the Lighted House and Choreoscope among others) and exhibits regularly in the Art GalleryH2O contemporary, in Barcelona. In addition, his work is part of the Márgenes.org archives andPLAT.tv, online Spanish independent film film archive.She has conducted audiovisual creation workshops with Abbas Kiarostami and Albert Serra.

As an architect, she trained in London at the AA Architectural Association, Riba Part 2.She also has a degree in Art History from the University of Barcelona.She has collaborated with OMA / Rem Koolhaas, Robert Wilson and regularly collaborates with Benedetta Tagliabue / EMBT and Alex Ollé (La Fura dels Baus).She specializes in ephemeral architecture, exhibition design, cultural content and scenery.

Statement

EXPERIENCE AS A FLUID OF BITS AND PIECES

“In her work she seems to seek to show the weightlessness of a fragmentary experience, the sum of instants that make up the present continuous.I am interested in exploring the sensations that occur in that future.Capture the contemplative present to share sensations and sensory findings.

She has grown in permanent contact with the Mediterranean Sea, and recognises herself immersed in water, floating, flowing and absorbed by the random swaying of the surrounding waves.This is also a type of sensorial experience of time.Water distorts the perception of temporal space, the search for sensations opens the experience of a certain paralysis of time and at the same time for a continuous movement and change. It is the momentary suspension of the laws that govern our existence.

We are nature and observation, we are subjective consciousness but also matter and energy.For her it is important to convey the corporeal sensation that spaces produce. These sensations are the starting point of her research, a sort of space immersion that develops into concepts and materializes in work through a process of depuration. The look adapts to the space it explores.

She explores the suspended corporeality in the sensation of the present by sharing it from the subjective experience of the body that observes, immersed in the fluid of matter.Understanding the present as the experience itself in the sum of moments.That is why - and also as a talisman to overcome her natural shyness - her body is often present in her work: from the presence of the same at the crossroads. That corporeal and unappealable presence is both an anchor in reality that she shares as an exercise in reinterpretation of that same reality observed and lived.

Landscape divided into four bands, sky,land, sea surface and underwater space. The horizon line as a line of inflection between water and air in the distance and near. Illusion of horizontality, illusion of stillness, il-lusion of silence. The island, the stones seem to float on a surface. As if some birds perched temporarily. Meanwhile, a woman dives also free of her own weight.

The vastness, it could be said to be aphilosophical category of reverie born inti-mately in a feeling of ecstasy, which dissolves and somehow absorbs the sensitive world.In certain almost supernatural states of soul, the depth of life is revealed entirely in the spectacle, however current, that one has under one’s eyes and becomes his symbol.The axis of this project is the horizon as a di-viding line between air and matter, both in its distant vision and in the foreground. Here the air, or the sky is treated so that it almost seems corporeal and instead the matter, the sea or the earth in the distance are treated so that they dematerialize.There are two times happening at the same time, infinite and eternal calm, with the seem-ingly chaotic movement. It is real and unreal at the same time.One over the other.

BREATHING

Breathing is a project where I seek to investigate an intimate moment of this plant, during which the night, artificial light and water give it a break after a hot and dry summer day.I try to capture how the flowers receive the irrigation and react to it.The flowers are sleeping but upon receiving the water you can see how they wake up and open up with light movements.

MY FLAT

My Flat is another old project that consists of a series of self-portraits in my own flat. Starting from everyday life or normality towards less probable and surreal situations.Green diving in the kitchen, pink in my bed-room, blue in the entrance, orange in my roommate’s bedroom and white in the bathroom.

BARBIE SUPERSTAR

Barbie Superstar is another old project in which instead of working with my body I play and manipulate that of Barbie. This project coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Barbie doll. I denounce the manipulation of the cosification of the female body in advertising and cinema, as well as the message that is transmitted to girls with this doll.There is torture, dismemberment and the doll is still smiling.A message in which the ideal of women isto smile and be beautiful to please.Although in this case, in this specific context Barbie seems to be freed from his cargo and free diving. She is a hero where mutilations are also metaphors of having regained control over her body and life

GRADIENTS

PHOTOGRAPHY2015-2018Light boxesMedidas variables: 157x83cm y 70x220cmLimited series of 7.

In this project I combine geometry and land-scape.In particular I look for or develop lines.In Gradients I manipulate the image in such a way that the gradation of colors looks like a kind of pantone, a formal and artifical organi-zation. With the tool of a simple alternation of white and original image I transform the landscape into a construction.These images are presented with individual light boxes where white is the wall.They are presented as an installation wherethe vacuum is alternated with the content and the wall becomes part of the work.
