1. a theme at the heart of today’s technological and industrial challenges

The overall, underlying challenge of this Chair, in the field of lubrication, is to respond to technological, environmentalandeconomic issuessuchas: increasing lifespans, decreasingenergy losses, reducing theuseoffossil-basedmaterials,andreducingthecostsforthedesignandoperationofmechanicalsystems.

Consequently, the scope of the Chair covers several issues in the field of lubricated interfaces to identifysolutions for the future, for example bearings, joints and screw systems. In this context, lubricants (oftencomplex fluids due to their nature and composition) play a crucial role in reducing friction losses and inreducing the risk of damage. They are subject to severe stress of different types: pressure gradients andconfinement, temperatureincrease, intenseshearingforces, interactionwiththeenvironment, etc.

ThroughthisChair, it isthereforevitalfortheSKFGroup-aworldleaderinthesupplyofbearings,seals,mechatronics,lubricationsystemsandrelatedservices-todevelopitsunderstandingonhowlubricantsmeetthesedemands,tobeabletomodelitsresponseandintegratethisinsimulationtools,therebyenablingthecompanytoimprovelubricantspecificationaccordingtotheapplication.

2. the missions and objectives of the chair

ThisteachingandresearchChairisorganisedaround3components:
