Worship Regularly Grow Intentionally Serve Generously BEARGRASS NEWS Vacation Bible School 2014 By Steven Straub Vacation Bible School will take place June 22-26, 2014, from 6:00-8:30 pm each evening. Most nights will include an opening gathering, snack supper, music, crafts, Bible stories, and recreation activities. The last night will include a family potluck, music concert, and carnival! This year’s theme is Under Construction: Build and Imagine with God. The children will gather in the Beargrass construction zone each night for a variety of exciting activities. As the children learn Bible stories from both the Old and New Testament, they will learn ways that they can imagine, build, grow, work, and walk with God. The Children’s Ministry Team is currently planning a wonderful experience for all children but they need volun- teers to help make the magic happen! If you are interested in helping with any aspect of Vacation Bible School (includ- ing but not limited to crafts, storytelling, recreation, music, registration, meals, decorations, and carnival), please call me at (502) 896-1161 or email [email protected]. All youth who have completed grades 6-12 can volunteer to assist with VBS. Any interested youth needs to complete a volunteer interest survey. Again this year, JYF (those who have completed 3 rd , 4 th , or 5 th grade) will have an entirely separate program. While they will join the other children for the opening festivities and dinner each night, the rest of the evening will be spent in their open program designed around the theme. Activi- ties will include special outings, service projects, and much more. A special flyer will be mailed to all JYF parents with more specific details. Registrations for VBS will open on May 1. Registration is based on grade COMPLETED in spring 2014, and all pre-school children must have turned 4 by June 1 to participate. Registrations can be made online and registrations will be taken at VBS registration tables in the Gathering Space on Sundays, May 11 and 18, before and after worship services. For those who register by May 31, the early bird cost is $12 and one’s T-shirt size is guaranteed. For those who register in June, the cost is $15. For those participating in the special JYF program, an additional $10 will be charged to cover their special program. VBS scholarships are available––contact me for more information or if you have any questions about VBS. VOLUME 7, NUMBER 5 BEARGRASS CHRISTIAN CHURCH (DISCIPLES OF CHRIST) MAY 2014

By Meg Blackwell

You will not want to miss the children’s musical, Rock-in’ Out with Elijah. They will take you back in time to the days of Elijah and a crazy contest between Elijah and the prophets of Baal. It will be a night full of song, dance, and laughter––and one you will not want to miss. Join us early at 5:00 pm for the annual Spaghetti Dinner and Cake Auc-tion to support the youth mission trips. It is truly a night for everyone at Beargrass.

Summer Reading ProgramBy Nancy Loverude Wilson

The theme for this year’s summer reading program is “Dive In to a Good Book.” The reading program begins Sunday, May 18, and ends Sunday, July 27. Readers can be preschoolers through adults. Sign-ups can be done in the library starting May 18.

This year we are adding a special program for pre-schoolers through fourth graders on Thursdays, June 19 through July 24 from 10:30 to 11:30 pm in the Library and Fellowship Hall. When the children arrive, they can check in their books. Next a story or two will be read to them. Then they will do a craft and have time to check out new books. We will have a special guest on June 19 that doesn’t speak but will put on a program for the children. Can you guess who it is? Please contact the church each week if your child will be there on Thursday so we will have enough supplies. If you’d like to volunteer as a reader or craft leader, please call the church office (896-1161) and let us know.

For our preschoolers, JCPS wants all kindergarteners to have had 1,000 books read to them by the time they get to kindergarten. Our reading program will help you reach that goal!

Gift certtificates will be given at the end of the program to the Half-Price Book Store to those who read the most books in the following age groups: preschool, kindergar-ten, first through third grade, fourth and fifth grade, middle school, high school, and adults.

Beargrass, Bicycles, and RefugeesBy Bob Callander

A bicycle is cast aside, waiting the day when it will again be useful and appreciated. A refugee is cast out of his or her native country, or must flee that country for religious, ethnic, or political reasons.

A bicycle waits, sometimes for years, gathering dust and dirt in a garage, basement or attic. A refugee waits, sometimes for years in a make-shift camp with little promise or hope of leaving.

A bicycle is donated to Beargrass Christian Church where the Pedal Power Project team gives it new parts and pre-pares it for a new home. A refugee is resettled through the offices of Kentucky Refugee Ministries in Louisville, where he or she learns how to survive in a different world.

The bicycle and the refugee have traveled similar paths. It’s not been easy, but now it is a new day and a new start, and they can depend on each other. Together, they will build a new life.

You can help! Donate your old bicycle and ask a friend or neighbor to donate theirs. More refugees are coming. Call Beargrass at 896-1161 for pick up and delivery options.
