Third Sunday of Advent December 16, 2012
Lift Up Your Heads
Advent Evening Prayer
St. Peter Church
Friday, December 21, 2012
7:00PM
Prepare your heart for the
coming of the Lord.
A service of psalms and songs
led by members of
St. Peter Music Ministries
Reconciliation . . . will be available following the above event.
Reconciliation will also be held on
Tuesday, December 18, 2012
following the 8:15AM Mass.
As always, Reconciliation is available
on Saturdays from 3:45-4:45PM.
ADVENT – THIS WEEK AT HOME Third Sunday of Advent – Gaudete Sunday
As the third candle is lit on the Advent wreath we can
immediately see that today is a bit different. The candle and the
priest’s vestments are rose rather than purple. Older folks will
recall that today was formerly called Gaudete (Rejoice) Sunday.
We are half way through our Advent journey. Even today’s
readings are more positive and upbeat. The Lord is near!
A practice in many parishes starts Monday with the celebration of
the “O” antiphons. Each of seven nights of communal evening
prayer recalls a title given to the Messiah: O Wisdom; O Lord; O
Root of Jesse; O Key of David; O Rising Sun; O King of the
Nations; O Emmanuel. Do these sound familiar? They are all
found in the hymn “O Come, O Come Emmanuel”. Here at St.
Peter we will celebrate them all on Friday, December 21 with a
sung prayer service. It starts at 7:00PM.
A SAINT to be remembered this week:
December 21 – ST. PETER CANISIUS
Peter was a 16th century Dutch Jesuit who lived during the
religious chaos of the Protestant Reformation. He had the great
gift of civility that got Catholic and Protestant hierarchies to put
aside acrimony and finger pointing to sit down to a relatively
calm dialogue about their differences. He was also a prolific
writer. Most of his works aimed to encourage the Catholic
faithful to defend their faith. His most important work was a
three volume Catechism.
THIS WEEK AT HOME IN THE YEAR OF FAITH – Put
aside some time with the kids to go out and see the different ways
that light is used to decorate houses. Explain to them that the
lights symbolize Jesus as the “Light of the World”. A tradition of
many St. Louis families is to visit the Way of Lights at Our Lady
of the Snows in Belleville. Besides the lights, there are afternoon
activities for the kids, the restaurant, a petting zoo, camel rides,
visiting choirs from St. Louis area parishes, and a large gift shop.
Which brings up another family tradition. Young families may
find this a good time to invest in a good basic Nativity display for
their homes. Each year a new figure can be added until the scene
is as elaborate as you have room to display. Letting the kids
choose the added figure during your annual visit to the Shrine can
be a lesson in sharing, compromising, and tradition. If these
lessons take root, maybe when you pass on the kids will “fight”
over who gets to inherit the set.
A BIG THANK YOU FROM KIRK CARE The board, volunteers and clients of Kirk Care would like to express a big thank you to St. Peter Parish. To all the parishioners who
brought food to church on Thanksgiving and after and to the volunteers from St. Peter who came to the Community of Christ Church to
help sort the food. Also to the students and parents who brought food at the school. The amount of food we received was overwhelming
and we are very grateful. With the food received from all the churches and schools in Kirkwood we filled 330 boxes of food to serve
around 150 families. The leftover food was used to back fill the food pantry.
A special thanks to the Student Council at school for helping load the food on the truck and for helping to separate the food at the
Community of Christ Church. And last, but certainly not least, thanks to the teachers at St. Peter School as well as the parents who
helped on Thursday. You made me proud.

The Traveling Chalice Program is designed
to pray for religious vocations. Parishioners are
asked to take the chalice home and display it in a
place of honor, where all throughout the week they
can notice it. Parishioners will pray around the
chalice every night for vocations to the priesthood
and religious life. Prayers for vocations will
accompany the chalice. You can choose which Mass your family
would like to receive the chalice. We have openings for the
Traveling Chalice in December. If you are interested in signing
up for a week please call Mary Carol Schilli at 314-520-0395 for

TREASURE REPORT AT-A-GLANCE
“And this is my prayer: that your love may increase ever more
and more in knowledge and every kind of perception, to discern
what is of value…”
(Philippians 1:9-10))
Glittery holiday ads can blind us to our stewardship values and
distort our needs and wants. It is important that during this
season of endless buying we remember that each of us also has
the need to give back to God.

Eymard
