Although it is the shortest month of the year, February was filled with many exciting
activities. The month included basketball games and tournaments, “I Love to Read”
week, crafts and homework clubs, cross-country skiing, gymnastics, board games,
artists, dancers, and many more extra curricular activities for our students.
In February we celebrated the 100th day of school. We had a great celebration, counting
all the way to 100, and gathering things in 10 groups of 10!
Students have been working hard this term and their efforts will be shared with you later
this month. Reports for K-9 students will go home on Monday, March 9, 2015. Please take
the time to review these report cards with your children.
Tri conferences for N-9 students are just around the corner on Thursday, March 12 and
Friday, March 13, 2015. Conferences can take many forms, but most importantly, they
encourage students to take ownership for their learning. Research tells us that reflecting
upon one’s learning is effective in improving academic performance.
As we progress into Term 3 we encourage our students to “Be The Best They Can Be” so
they complete the school year on a positive note. The partnership between the child, the
parent(s) and the school is very important. The stronger the partnership, the more
learning and achievement can be expected.
We are beginning to plan for the 2015-2016 school year. Spring Break is just around the
corner. The Spring Break dates are March 30 - April 3, 2015. We trust that you will all
enjoy a safe and relaxing time with your children.
Regards,
M. Dveris, Principal
K. Reimer, Vice-Principal

Did March come in like a lion or a
lamb? The children in Room 117
will have the answer. The students
are looking forward to sharing
their growth portfolios during Tri-
Conferences on March 12 and 13,
2015. I am impressed with their
accomplishments!

Arts Smarts Project-Grades 1-6
The Grades 1-6 classes will be participating in an “Arts Smarts Project” during
the weeks of February 17-March 19, 2015. This year, we are pleased to welcome
back Leigh-Anne Kehler to Cecil Rhodes School. Leigh-Anne is a professional
storyteller who worked with the Grades 1-3 students last year on a project about
building “Community Spirit.” Assisting Leigh-Anne will be Daina Leitold, a
professional actress who has worked in films and television shows throughout
Manitoba and Canada. The theme for this year’s project is “Multiculturalism
within our Community.” All classes will be participating in an in-depth study
about their families and the topic of multiculturalism. Students will be using folk
tales, drama, dance, music and writing activities to express their knowledge of
this important topic. The children and Staff are looking forward to this project
over the next few weeks. We welcome Parents/Guardians to assist classes in
this project. Please contact Mr. Oakes at (204) 783-9012 (Room 117) if you are
interested in helping out.

Kimochis
Jennifer Curtis, School Social Worker
This year, Cecil Rhodes is excited to offer the Kimochis Program to grade two stu-
dents in Ms. Gilmore’s classroom. The program is facilitated by Ms. Gilmore and
Jennifer Curtis, school Social Worker.
Kimochis are a fun and easy way to introduce social-emotional learning and char-
acter education to children. The program helps to create an optimistic, caring
classroom environment where children feel understood, included and valued.
Kimochis teaches children to communicate with respect and kindness, even when
others do not.
The students are having weekly visits with the Kimochis characters. During each
visit, they learn about how their tone of voice, body language and choice of words
can make things better or worse. The Kimochis characters help the children to
communicate their feelings, understand differences, build relationships and see
the positive in one another.
If you have a child in Ms. Gilmore’s room, ask them to tell you about their favourite
Kimochi. Each Kimochi character has unique characteristics that the students can
relate to. Cloud is moody; Cat is curious; Bug is shy and Huggtopus is silly. Lovey
Dove is the calm and wise Kimochi. She helps the other Kimochi characters solve
problems and believes in them.

STOP! DROP! GO! ZONE
The area in front of Cecil Rhodes School is now considered our
student drop off zone before and after school.
We ask that all parents/guardians who are dropping off
students at the school please respect this zone.
If you are dropping off your child, please approach the zone from
the Worth and Elgin intersection. Students are to be let out of the
right-side curb door of the vehicle.
Please only enter the drop off zone from Worth and exit via Cecil
Street. Please do not park illegally along Elgin to wait for your
children.
Elgin has become very unsafe with children being dropped off from
both directions. School busses and emergency vehicles would not
get through making it an unsafe situation.
We appreciate your cooperation with this system as we work to
keep everyone safe on the street in front of our school.
SAFETY BEFORE CONVENIENCE!!!
