Be Bop

General facts 1940-1955

� Swing and Bebop are actually part of the same musical genre. The difference is the fact that Bebop is structurally and emotionally more complex.

� It brings freedom to the rhythm section while emphasizing soloists.

� Improvisation becomes important in this style.

� During the time, Bebop allowed African Americans to express themselves as they shaped the pathway for modern jazz.

In the Music

� Tends to be at fast and upbeat tempos

� Consists of a main theme and an overlying solo that extends over the entire length of the song

� Drummers do more than just keep the rhythm now as they incorporate stylistic touches into music
