Eighteen-year-old Jon Kamps has been named the 2009 Youth of the Year of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Wayne County. Kamps moved with his family from Florida to Richmond about seven years ago. He began attending the Central Unit after a new friend invited him to go as a guest. Jon said the Club became his second family. Kamps participated in several of the leadership programs including Torch Club, Keystone Club and the Jr. Staff Career Development Program. Kamps graduated with honors from Richmond High School in June with a GPA of 3.6 . He is currently a Jr. Staff at the Jeffers Unit for the summer and plans to attend Indiana University East in the fall. As the local Youth of the Year winner, Kamps represented his Club in the state contest. Kamps said that when he gave his competition speech, the audience surprised him with a standing ovation. Kamps placed among the top five Youth of the Year finalists. The highlight of the event was when Kamps met and spoke personally with Governor Mitch Daniels. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Wayne County selected Richmond High School seniors Jon Kamps, Justin Miller-Ramsey and Cameron Marshall as the 2009 Jack Reed Memorial Scholarship recipients. The Scholarship Committee awarded $2000 this year. The scholarship is in memory of Jack Reed and was established by his wife, Diane and his children. Jack Reed was a board member of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Wayne County and an advocate for youth development. After relocating to northern Indiana, Reed was instrumental in helping to open a new Boys & Girls Club in the Fort Wayne area. His dedication to youth and service to his community was remembered by his family when they created the Jack Reed Memorial Scholarship in his honor. Board of Directors Members Honored at Annual Dinner

Stidham Named Mother of the Year

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Wayne County named Carla Stidham of Richmond as its Mother of the Year during the fourth annual Mother-Daughter Tea. The mother of three, and grandmother of five, was recognized for her lengthy involvement with the club where she “provides love, caring and thoughtfulness for hundreds of children every single year.”

Stidham, who became involved with the organization in 1994, is active in the club’s Etiquette Program and the Christmas Shop. The Etiquette Program teaches club members about proper etiquette and good manners. The Christmas Shop, which Stidham started, gives children the opportunity to earn “Santa Bucks” and later shop for their family. The event has grown tremendously over the years and now serves over 300 youth.

The 2009 Annual Dinner honored many individuals who make an IMPACT on our Club members on a daily basis. The quality of their work and personal interactions with young people sets the Boys & Girls Clubs of Wayne County apart from other youth development organizations. Among those honored at this year’s Annual Dinner was Monique Hogan, Volunteer of the Year at the Jeffers Unit. Dr. John Egger was presented the award for Volunteer of the Year at the Central Unit. Tamie Hughes was presented with the Staff Member of the Year Award. Really Cool Foods was presented with the Earl and Kathryn Mayer Award for their commitment to Wayne County.

The Board of Directors was also honored for all their hard work throughout the year. Attendance Awards were presented to Jim Daggy, John Hitch, Tim Love, Terry O’Maley, Valerie Ray, Jeff Sheridan, Al Tassaro, and Kelly VanVleet for 100% attendance at board meetings. Kelly VanVleet was presented with the Rookie Board Member of the Year Award for help on numerous committees, her enthusiasm and energy. The President’s Award was presented to Garry Kleer for commitment to the Board Development Committee and the introduction of the Club to Really Cool Foods. Board Member of the Year was presented to Mike Dickerson for his continued commit-ment to the Club. Mike was instrumental in securing a marketing sponsorship from Bridgemaxx Communications that covered the entire cost of marketing for the annual campaign. He also donates a major gift each year to the Smart Futures Dinner to be in the vocal auction and his company has been providing technical support at little to no cost to the Boys & Girls Club since before he was a member of the board of directors. Congratulations to all of our award recipients and thank you for making us GREAT!
