WHY FLEXIBLE PACKAGING WITH AVERY DENNISON. AND WHY NOW.

If You’re Not In Flexible Packaging, It’s Time To Get In. If You’re In It, It’s Time to Grow It. And Avery Dennison Can Help.

At Avery Dennison, we see flexible packaging as a real positive for converters. Globally, it’s on the grow. Its short lead times, intrinsic product safety, high-impact graphics and longer shelf life present exciting opportunities for narrow web converters. Its low plate-to-press costs make it far more attractive to brand owners than wide web. And the industry’s need for speed – driven by short-runs, regional products and versioning – are readily met by the quick changeover capability of narrow web.

This guide will take you through what you need to know to capitalize on flexible packaging and grow your business in profitable new directions.

STUDIES SHOW FLEXIBLE PACKAGING IS GOOD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT.

According to a report by Global Industry Analysts (GIA), the global market for sustainable packaging is forecast to reach $142.42 billion by the year 2015

> Less energy used = fewer natural resources used

> Less fuel for transportation = less CO2 = a higher product to package ratio = less waste = less landfill

> 72% less landfill vs. metal recycling rates of cans

> Energy savings = 17 million gallons of gasoline per year in total footprint

> One truckload of unfilled flexible pouches = 26 truckloads of unfilled glass jars

> One glass bottle will have to be recycled 20 times to = the environmental profile of one pouch

KNOW WHAT WORKS.Stickpak flexible packaging from Avery Dennison helped “wow” consumers with the world’s first powder oral rinse.

“ If it wasn’t for the stick pack format, the product would have had to be in tablet form … and wouldn’t have been as user friendly or delivered the ‘experience during use’ we wanted.”

KNOW HOW TO GET STARTED.HOW NARROW WEB PRINTERS CAN CAPITALIZE ON FLEXIBLE PACKAGING OPPORTUNITIES.

Q: Is it difficult to convert flexible packaging pouch materials?

A: The majority of flexible packaging materials for pouches – paper film and/or foil – will run on narrow web presses, so integrating the various materials into the existing production mix is easy.

Q: What press settings should be considered?

A: There are two categories of film-faced pouch materials. 1) Either a single layer of film, or two layers of film laminated together; and 2) a multiple-film lamination that often contains a metallic barrier layer or foil. Multiple-layer laminations utilize similar web tensions as the paper-faced pouch materials, and are similar to pressure-sensitive materials tensions. The thin-film laminations require a press designed specifically to convert these materials (suitable for applications like single-ply and multi-ply snack webs). Contact your Avery Dennison representative to learn more about these specific presses.

Q: What FDA requirements are involved?

A: All flexible packaging materials used in food applications must be Food and Drug Administration (FDA) compliant. Determine FDA requirements for each application and work with your ink and varnish suppliers to meet the FDA requirements of their end-users as well.

Page 13: BE IN THE KNOW - Avery DennisonBE IN THE KNOW A Collection of Tips That Will Put You in the Know About Flexible Packaging Success...

Q: What ink, varnishes and adhesives should be used?

A: Surface printing leaves the graphics exposed to handling and environmental degradation. Some method of protection is needed, whether it’s a varnish or an overlaminate.

• Varnishes should be heat resistant to 400°F when cured; crack-resistant; and low odor when cure-dried.

• Sub-surface printing is another protective option for graphics

• Adhesives: Most narrow web printers use UV adhesives for flexible packaging

Q: What factors play into roll quality?

A: The roll profile must be flat to prevent gauge bands. Thinner films must be free of nicks and damage to avoid web breaks. Edges must be damage-free to avoid additional web breaks. Rolls should always be wrapped and reinforced with dividers during transport and storage.

Page 14: BE IN THE KNOW - Avery DennisonBE IN THE KNOW A Collection of Tips That Will Put You in the Know About Flexible Packaging Success...

Q: What are some fit-for-use product recommendations?

A: It’s essential converters use the appropriate flexible packaging materials for the specific application at hand. Packaging dry or wet food, powdered ingredients, lotion, or oxygen-sensitive products all demand specific materials for a successful package. The key is to test, test, and re-test.

Q: What are the testing requirements for end-use applications?

A: It’s strongly recommended end users conduct testing on any flexible packaging materials to ensure the material will work in their application. For hard-to-seal items, or items that contain oils, it’s suggested the converter fill the pouches with the ingredients, seal appropriately, and conduct accelerated age testing to ensure the pouch material will perform properly.

Q: How do I find, and work with, contract packagers (co-packers)?

A: Finding the right co-packer often depends on the size of your company and the level of service you’re seeking.
