Count Basie Theatre Performing Arts Academy

H I S T O R YThe primary mission of the

Count Basie Theatre Performing Arts Academy is to foster understanding and appreciation for the performing arts, and to create opportunities for arts education and participation in the arts for

students of all ages and all economic levels.

Established in 2001 with an initial enrollment of 69 students, the Academy now serves over 1,700 students annually. As our students grow in proficiency and their needs change, we strive to offer programs that continue to challenge and motivate.

Our Outreach program began as a collaborative program with the Red Bank Borough School System in 2005. Today, we serve over 400 students annually with in-school, after-school, and summer performing arts classes in the Primary and Middle Schools. Our faculty provides music, theatre, and dance instruction to students who would not otherwise experience the enrichment that the arts provide. As school budgets have been adjusted to focus on core curricula, the Academy has become one of the primary providers of arts education to the Red Bank Schools.

The Basie Awards Program was created in 2006 to recognize excellence in high school dramatic and musical productions. From September through April, performances given by Monmouth County High Schools are attended and evaluated. Nominees in over 25 award categories are announced in early May. The gala award presentation, much like Broadway’s Tony Awards, takes place at the end of May on the Count Basie Theatre stage.

• Now in its 11th year, the Academy boasts an enrollment of 1,700 students (adults & children) per year.

• We have been successful in fulfilling our mission in the following ways:

- Offering classes to theatre enthusiasts of all ages - Spreading our enthusiasm and passion for the arts - Creating a challenging & stimulating curriculum - Offering community outreach performances - Collaborating with the local schools through our Educational Outreach Program - Honoring excellence in Monmouth County High School Theatre through our Annual Basie Awards Program

• An assessment of our Outreach Program has shown improvements in the areas of Language Arts, Personal & Social Development, and the growth of the “whole child”.

• The annual Basie Awards have created a sense of community within the 26 Monmouth County High Schools for the past seven years. This program spotlights local talent on stage and behind the scenes.

all the hard work you do worthwhile.”- C. Dwyer, Middletown

G O A L S

To keep the performing arts alive in Monmouth County we are seeking financial support from Academy families, local granting organizations and through the generosity of outside donors. In coordination with our Director of Education, Yvonne Lamb Scudiery and the Academy professional faculty we have identified the following program expansions that need your support:

• Expand scholarship and tuition assistance opportunities to in-need students who participate in workshops and classes. ($10,000 each year)

• Support professional development for Red Bank school teachers - integrate art based teaching methods into the school curriculum for our educators. ($10,000)

• Expand our Outreach Program with additional funding for professional salaries, classroom materials, supplies and musical instruments. ($10,000)

• Enhancements and upgrades for all on-site classrooms including lighting, microphones, set pieces, and costuming needs, instrument upgrades and storage. ($10,000)

• Maintain and grow our annual program, the Basie Awards. ($25,000)

Project Goal: $65,000
