Welcome! For 80 years, Twin City Stage has been an extraordinary family of committed and dedicated volunteers, patrons and staff. Since its inception as The Little Theatre of Winston-Salem in 1935, we have been a fundamental part of Winston-Salem’s cultural scene, inviting everyone in the community to exercise their imaginations, stretch their creative muscles, and experience the joys of live theatre.

Take a look at our exciting and innovative season of productions, and plan on joining us for family friendly entertainment, thought-provoking intrigue, and Triad premiere productions. We offer a unique opportunity to be a part of Winston-Salem’s original theatre, an innovative and creative environment, where everyone is a part of the story—on stage, backstage, in the audience, the office, and the shops. You don’t get to be 80 years old without a lot of help from your friends!

You make a difference in the life of this theatre and we hope that we make a difference in yours, too. Thank you for being a part of our story.

See you in the theatre!

Into the WoodsBook by James Lapine; Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim “So into the woods you go again…you have to every now and then. Into the woods, no telling when, be ready for the journey.” The forests are not always what they seem in Sondheim’s spellbinding, romantic, and brilliant Into the Woods. Weaving everyone’s favorite fairy tales together, this delightful and witty musical asks: what happens after happily ever after? Winner of the 1987 Tony Awards for Best Book and Best Score, this timeless modern classic combines dazzling lyrics, sumptuous melodies, and a deliciously wicked plot to form a fractured fairy-tale that will take you into the woods… and back again.

Pride and Prejudice Adapted by Jon Jory from the novel by Jane Austen “It is a truth, universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.” Finding a husband is hardly Elizabeth Bennet’s most urgent priority. But with four sisters, an overzealous match-making mother, and a string of unsuitable suitors, it’s difficult to escape the subject. When the independent-minded Elizabeth meets the handsome but enigmatic Mr. Darcy, one question prevails: can they possibly look beyond his pride and her prejudice to make the best match of all? Jane Austen’s classic 1813 novel comes to life in this refreshingly fast-paced and engaging new adaptation.

NOVEMBER 7-9 & 13-16, 2014

A Time to Kill Adapted for the stage by Rupert Holmes, based on the classic best seller by John Grisham “What is it in us that seeks the truth? Is it our minds or is it our hearts?” Torn in half by an unspeakable crime, a small Mississippi town becomes the center of a media storm where innocence is the victim, race is on trial and lives hang in the balance. The first John Grisham novel to be brought to the stage, A Time to Kill tells the morally complex tale of Carl Lee Hailey, an African-American father who takes justice into his own hands, and Jake Brigance, the white defense attorney who dares to take his case.

Vanya and Sonia and Masha and SpikeBy Christopher Durang “I wish you wouldn’t feel jealous of me. It just exhausts me.” Middle-aged siblings Vanya and Sonia have never left the confines of their childhood home in Bucks County, PA, while their sister Masha has been gallivanting around the world as a successful actress. When Masha arrives for a surprise visit with Spike, her 20-something boy toy, the normally quiet household is thrown into utter upheaval as its residents and visitors get swept up in an intoxicating mixture of lust, rivalry, regret, and the sudden possibility of escape. Winner of the 2013 Tony Award for Best Play.

Mary Poppins Original Music and Lyrics by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman; Book by Julian Fellowes; New Songs and Additional Music and Lyrics by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe; Co-Created by Cameron Mackintosh (pending approval of production rights)

There’s only one word for it—“Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!” Jack-of-all trades, Bert, introduces us to England in 1910 and the troubled Banks family. Young Jane and Michael have sent many a nanny packing before Mary Poppins arrives on their doorstep. Using a combination of magic and common sense, she teaches the family how to value each other again. Based on the books by P. L. Travers and the classic Walt Disney film, Mary Poppins includes a score filled with timeless classics such as “Jolly Holiday”, “Step in Time”, and the Academy Award®-winning “Chim-Chim Cher-ee”.

OCTOBER 17-19, 2014

The O utsidersAdapted by Christopher Sergel, from the book by S. E. Hinton “When you’re a kid everything’s new, dawn. It’s just when you get used to everything that it’s day.” Teen rivalry in a small Southern town sets the stage for this dramatic interpretation of the novel by S.E. Hinton. Seen through the eyes of young Ponyboy, a Greaser on the wrong side of life, The Outsiders tells the story of the ongoing conflict between the underprivileged Greasers and the rich-kid Socs in rural Oklahoma. When a territorial battle goes wrong, Ponyboy and his friends have to grow up quickly, holding on to their hope and their friends in the midst of a very climactic ending.

The theatre’s desire to provide training and education results in acting classes for students.

Youth ProductionsEducation is an important aspect of our mission and we are pleased to offer a new and exciting Youth Production Series to our repertoire. Produced with the same high-quality standards you’ve come to expect from Twin City Stage, the shows in this series are an outgrowth of the dynamic acting classes and camps we currently offer. The full-length, main stage productions will follow the same open audition process that we’ve always used, but have been specifically chosen with an eye toward multiple roles for young performers. Our goal is to develop young, motivated theatre enthusiasts by offering storylines of interest to young people and creating memorable experiences for the young performers in our community. Although not a part of our standard membership package, these Youth Productions are a great way to see tomorrow’s talent today!

MAY 1-3, 2015

Anne of Green Gables Adapted by Peter DeLaurier, from the novel by L. M. Montgomery “I’ve always dreamed of going to a picnic in puffed sleeves. I’d rather look ridiculous with everyone else than plain and sensible all by myself.” When aging brother and sister Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert send to the orphanage in Nova Scotia for a boy to help them on the farm, they get more than they bargain for. Due to a mix-up, they are instead left with 11-year-old Anne Shirley. Over the course of six years, this romantic, hot-headed, and energetic redhead wins their hearts and turns the stodgy, rural Canadian community into a bright world of “kindred spirits.” This swift yet theatrical adaptation of the classic novel is an all-ages crowd-pleaser.

DECEMBER 19-21, 2014

Yes, Virginia: The Musical Music by Wesley Whatley; book & lyrics by William Schermerhorn “It’s true if you believe!” Eight-year-old Virginia O’Hanlon has always loved Christmas. When her classmates bring up the age-old question: “Is there a Santa Claus?” Virginia ventures into the city to find out for herself. A scraggly Santa, an excitable librarian, and even Virginia’s quirky doctor father can’t give her a satisfactory answer. So, Virginia writes to Francis Church, the editor of The New York Sun. The answer she receives is one that will become the most famous newspaper editorial of all time.
