WE HAVE ONLY THREE MONTHS TO GO!

I attended the official kickoff on Feb. 23rd

share this special moment in time with you.

Please come, enjoy this once in a lifetime experience in which we have the privilege to host. It is our honour, my

BC/YUKON DELEGATE

Delegate's Diary

The World Service Conference was held in Virginia Beach from April 12 to 19, 2013. I was honoured to be your

representative. Thank you for all the cards, emails and phone calls. Your support was so meaningful for me.

I will only give you a few highlights from the conference, and will give details at our Area World Service Committee

Meeting in Victoria in May.

The Service Manual will be revised this year. A new version will be issued in early 2014. Drafts for two sections were

reviewed, discussed and amended.

Anonymity (pages 88 to 91) This section has been expanded and anonymity at the level of the internet and

social media has been clarified.

Public Relations (Pages 107 -109) The title of this section has been changed to Public Outreach. The text

has been expanded to clarify roles and responsibilities. Anonymity at this level is also clarified.

Two new pieces of Conference Approved Literature will be issued this year.

Conflict Resolution using our Twelve Traditions (P72) This is a set of 14 plasticized cards outlining how each of our

Traditions can be used in solving issues at the group, district, and area levels. This is a follow-up to the Conflict

Resolution wallet card (S71)

Reaching for Personal Freedom - Living the Legacies. This is a workbook that can be used by individuals or groups

in applying the Steps, Traditions and Concepts in our personal lives. This workbook will be released at the Al-Anon

International Convention in Vancouver. The price for the workbook during the convention will be $15.00.

The conference was an amazing experience. Throughout the week, it was evident that our spiritual principles were the basis

for all the discussions and decisions. It was truly the Al-Anon program in action.

Love in service, Lois K.

Delegate, BC/|Yukon [email protected]

BC/YUKON CHAIR

From me to you in Al-Anon

It’s that time of year. Area World Service Committee Meeting (AWSCM) is fast upon us.

Any member of Al-Anon is encouraged to attend *especially if you live in Victoria* and get a unique perspective about the

world wide fellowship of Al-Anon.

WHO IS INVITED?

Every DR in BC/Yukon is encouraged and supported to attend. You are a crucial link in the service structure in Al-Anon;

Group Representatives (GR) rely on you for the information they need to take back to their groups.

SOME of WHAT HAPPENS AT AWSCM?

Lois K, our area Delegate, will share her report after attending her 1st World Service Conference in Virginia Beach; area Co-

ordinators will introduce themselves and share a bit about their service experiences; Owen H, our area Treasurer, will present

the area financials; Nancy B, the International Convention Chair, will have an update, answer questions and present volunteer

opportunities.

Together, the District Representative’s (DR), officers and co-ordinators will plan the agenda for Assembly and discuss and

consider several business items. We have 3 items for discussion this year.

1. Literature sales at Area Meetings

2. The production/administration/cost of the Bulletin

3. Information packages for Assembly and AWSCM and consent agenda

It’s important to remember that we don’t vote at AWSCM, we make recommendations for the assembly.

We’ll have a great dinner (ORDER YOUR TICKETS, MAKE YOUR RESERVATIONS), share our experience and strength

all the while having fun and sharing laughter.

WHEN AND WHERE?

May 24th, 25th

and 26th we will meet in VICTORIA at the Comfort Inn and discuss the business of Al-Anon in Area 81

BC/Yukon.

WHY?

Well, why not? Your expenses are reimbursed. It’s meaningful, informational, and important; your voice counts.

A few words about the venue: the room will be too hot and too cold. There will lots of easy parking and not enough parking.

The tables are too small and not round and the tables are too big and square. We had cookies at muffin time and muffins at

cookie time. There weren’t enough fat free, gluten free, dairy free, and sugar free or vegetarian food choices. The fruit was

boring and the fruit was great.

It’s all about perspective, attitude, acceptance and a sense of humour. Please remember to bring your Service Manual. Please

remember to bring your agenda and other paper items but most of all please remember to bring your ideas, your solutions and

your great smile!

I look forward to seeing you all. With my kindest regards and gratitude, Ally

BC/YUKON ALTERNATE DELEGATE

Hello to my Al-Anon friends!

As I begin my term as Alternate Delegate, I realize that my job is mainly in a supportive role with officers and

coordinators. This suits my needs at this time in my life and I look forward to learning from each of them during this exciting

year!

I hope you are all considering attending the Al-Anon International Convention in Vancouver. This is an event

Area 81 presented a very detailed bid to host – twice - and we were finally successful. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity

for many of us because the Al-Anon International Convention is only held every 5 years in North America. The last one was

in Pittsburgh in 2008. We had so much excitement when we presented our bids to host a few years ago. Let’s work together

to make this a memorable event for all!

To ensure we provide a warm welcome to Al-Anon, Alateen and AA members from around the world, we will need

help from everyone. If we all take one or two shifts as a volunteer, we can host an amazing experience and grow through

service to Al-Anon. What a wonderful way to meet new people and learn more about Al-Anon through sharing the Al-Anon

experience with people from diverse backgrounds. Because Al-Anon is self supporting, volunteers must purchase a ticket to

attend. If we all take one shift during the weekend, we can do our part as hosts and also be free to participate in the

workshops and speaker meetings. Please sign up at www.bcyukon-al-anon.org through the page entitled “International

Page 7: BC/Yukon Al-Anon/Alateenbcyukon-al-anon/pdf/May_2013_Bulletin.… · BC/Yukon Al-Anon/Alateen ... The church is called Como Lake United on the corner of King Albert ... playground,

BC/Yukon Area 81 Bulletin Page 7 of 14

Convention”. I’m sure the host committee can find a job for you that matches your interests and skills. Early registration will

help the host committee create their volunteer schedules.

Plans are underway for AWSCM in May. I am looking forward to hearing from each District Representative about

the successes, challenges and initiatives of groups throughout our province. Please support your District Representative (DR)

to be your voice at AWSCM. If you don’t know who your DR is, ask your Group Representative (GR) who should be

working closely with the DR. This would be a good time to read our Al-Anon Service Manual for details about Al-Anon’s

service structure and how to apply traditions to group problems. Did you know that only Al-Anon members make the

decisions? Your officers, coordinators, district representatives and group representatives are there to facilitate discussion that

can help you make informed decisions. Ultimately, it is the members who vote through their Group Representative at

Assembly. This is why it is important to value your GR’s report to group members and support their attendance at Assembly.

Your informed opinion is necessary to support the success of Al-Anon in Area 81!

You have probably seen “The Forum” magazine in your group literature. This monthly publication is available by

subscription to all Al-Anon members. It contains a variety of stories from Al-Anon members as they gain new insights by

using the Al-Anon steps, traditions and concepts. It includes information about Al-Anon conference approved literature, as

well as important messages from our World Service Office. This little magazine also includes topics for discussion at

meetings. I encourage you to subscribe. Order forms are available on the back page of the magazine or on our website on the

“member resources” page.

Finally, we hope you will all support Lois, your delegate in the important work she is doing on our behalf. Lois will

be attending the week long World Service Conference at the Al-Anon World Service Office in Virginia Beach from April 14

to 18, 2013. It is a very busy week with a lot of meetings, discussions and information to gather for the benefit of our Area.

You can support Lois by letting her know she is in our thoughts and that we appreciate her time and effort as our delegate. E-

mails are an excellent way to ensure Lois feels supported by Area 81 members. You can reach her through her e-mail

address: [email protected].

Thank you for taking the time to read your officer/coordinator reports and for your commitment to serving Al-Anon!

With gratitude,

Janis A, Alternate Delegate

BC/YUKON AREA 81 GROUP RECORDS

As your new Area Group Records Coordinator I thank Cynthia Y., my predecessor, for a smooth transition into the

position as of January 1, 2013. I also owe many thanks to the DRs, officers and coordinators for their support and

encouragement during the past few months.

A new item of information for Group Records this year is the inclusion of BC Yukon Alateen meetings on our

website. Not only are the Alateen meetings listed in the “Click Here for Alateen Meetings” section; they are also listed with

the Al-Anon meetings of each city. This is a welcome addition for potential Alateen newcomers seeking meeting

information.

In each Bulletin I have been including a short note reminding and thanking everyone for making Group Records

their “one-stop-shop” by informing me of any changes to their district and/or group information. Once I am aware of any

changes, I update our Area 81 databases; notify the AIS offices and the Area 81 Bulletin editor; update the meeting

information on our BC Yukon website; and notify WSO. My mandate is to keep our Area 81 records current, and I truly

appreciate your support by informing me first. It makes your job easier too!

Just to ensure that our Area 81 records are current and as a double-check for accuracy, I am asking that all DRs

bring their groups’ current information (GR, CMA, contacts, meeting time and place) to AWSCM. I will have a

package for each DR that will include the current information I have for each group. Pages can be edited as required; and, if

amendments are needed, leave them with me for updating our records.

Area 81 began 2013 with 204 groups. I am pleased to report that the Princeton Women AFG in District 21 has

reopened after a few months’ hiatus under a new name, so that brings our count to 205 groups as of March 20.

Unfortunately, there is an unconfirmed report that a group in District 4 is closing so that will reduce us to our original count

of 204. The question arises: How can we assist groups to maintain healthy membership numbers?

Another concern I have is that Districts 8 and 23 have no District Reps. Being a relative newcomer to the Area

Committee, I hope that we have an opportunity at the AWSCM to discuss how to assist districts in electing DRs so that all

BC/YUKON LITERATURE

Literature Corner – May 2013

Al-Anon Declaration – Let It Begin with Me (M-8). My first Sponsor always told me (she passed away last year and I miss

her dearly), “you never say no when somebody asks you for service.” In the beginning I was afraid to say yes--what if...I am

not ready, if I do it wrong, etc. But as I “kept coming back,” I learned what she meant--that service is the best way to

practice, learn and grow in the program. I learned that service is not only to have a service position in the group such as

Treasurer, GR, DR, etc, but When anyone, anywhere, reaches out for help, let the hand of Al-Anon and Alateen always be

there, and---Let It Begin with me. When somebody asks me to go for a coffee, to speak on the phone, to go for a walk and

talk, or asks me to be a sponsor, I say YES! I take my Higher Power's hand, and ask him to give me the right words to think

and say. I push myself a little bit and leave aside fear, because I feel good serving, because giving is giving back a little bit of

how much I have received from this wonderful program, and because I am growing without knowing it. Today I have a

spiritual awareness of how many people like myself need this program. Putting myself first is a good beginning. I am not

afraid anymore, I am an instrument of my Higher Power's will. Lending my ears, passing the message, sharing my

experience, reading the literature to someone, giving my phone number to a newcomer, giving a book away, sponsoring

Alateen or Steps meetings, are some of the ways besides being a Literature Coordinator that I can practice the Al-Anon

Declaration, because today I am responsible--Let It Begin with Me.

Theme: “Our Spiritual Journey: We get as we give.”

Ally G. – Chair – Welcomed everyone. Ally opened the meeting at 7 pm with a moment of silence followed by Serenity

Prayer. Lynn B. Dist. 32 read the 12 Traditions. Ally read Tradition Two and reminded everyone of its importance, especially

at meetings. New to AWSCM is a PowerPoint introduction of the weekend agenda. Ally reviewed some housekeeping items.

Janet H. Dist. #25 will chair the early bird meeting at 8 am tomorrow. We were advised of new literature, a pamphlet for

men, about the women in their lives that drink, “Does she drink too much?” for men, about the women in their lives that

drink. Ally went over the goals and objectives of the AWSCM and the need for spiritual and respectable conduct to all its

members. Ally explained the two agenda changes. The 3rd

year DR’s will plan an orientation with Ally’s input for the 1st &

2nd

year DR’s when we break for the ice cream social. On Saturday the DR’s will plan the GR workshop for Assembly.

Sharon C. Area 81 Bulletin Report- Dist. 25, Kamloops: Learning. Need input from DR’s on events for Bulletin and the

results of those events. Janis A. posts the events on the website. The deadline for submitting reports for the Area 81 Bulletin

is the 17th

of each month. The Area 81 Bulletin consists of 10 pages and there was some discussion on this. Jean B. explained

that we got a special postage rate with that amount of pages. There was a suggestion to have another member proof read the

Area 81 Bulletin. Also add some Al-Anon trivia to the Bulletin.

Introduction: Host Committee Chair, Bill D., Ally G., Area 81 Chairperson Shirley T., Delegate, Henny K., Alternate

Delegate-regrets, Owen H., Treasurer-regrets, Dennis G, acting Treasurer, Jean H., Area 81 Secretary, Delta L. Area 81

Literature Coordinator, Betty M., Area 81 Alternate Literature Coordinator, Michelle W., Alateen Coordinator, Shannon P.,

AAPP, Nancy S., Archives, Sharon C., Area 81 Bulletin, Janet H., Area 81 Public Outreach Coordinator, Gail G., Central

Office Chair, Marja J., Victoria AIS, Nancy M., Kelowna AIS - regrets, Cynthia Y., Group Records Coordinator, Janis A.

Alternate Website Coordinator, and Nancy B. Chair of Host Committee for 2013 International Convention.

District Representative Reports: When giving reports include: who, what, where, why, and how; include district

challenges, successes, and events. We grow by sharing our experiences, strength & hope and we take this back to our Group

Representatives in our district. There are 7 - 1st Year District Representatives, who are wearing yellow name tags. There are 3

– 2nd

Year District Representatives, who are wearing pink name tags. There are lots of 3rd

Year District Representatives, who

are wearing green name tags. Does everyone have their DR package?

New Website: Janis A., Dist. 10, Area Alternate Website Coordinator: More work than anticipated in creating the new

website. There were 4 people, Dennis G., Janis A., Helen, Dist. 10, Carol M., Website Coordinator, who were involved in

setting up the website. They are in the process of switching all the Officers and Coordinators email addresses to the website,

and therefore when the new person takes over the position the email address remains the same. The Events page is not

password protected and they have not received any submissions. A thought was to create a submission page for events and if

so would people be comfortable about giving their names and phone numbers regarding the various events. Also, at the

present time a member will have to go to two sections of the website to post their event: one to the Area 81 Bulletin Editor

(which is protected) and the other to the Al-Anon Area Website (which is public). Discussion:

a) Create a box on the bottom of the event page on the website, whether the sender wants their name to remain

anonymous or in agreement to give their contact information.

b) Display Central Services as the contact number for more information.

c) Keep it simple by just giving the information of who, what and where the event is taking place.

d) Discussion regarding personal anonymity within the program does not mean our program is a secret. We need to

make information available to the public.

When the website was launched a submission link for the events page was not available. Sharon C. gives Janis A. the events

information once a month. Janis, with the help of the other Website Team, will create an events page, which goes to Area 81

Bulletin as well as the website events page.

Shirley T., Delegate- Tent cards, Nancy M., AIS Kelowna District created it. DR’s give them to your GR’s in your district.

Gave DR’s in every district the list of each group’s donation funds paid to WSO for quarterly appeal. Thanked everyone for

the support via mail and email, when she was at WSC and shared her experience with us. Vicky from Campbell River

thanked Shirley for her daily emails on what was happening in at Assembly.

Shirley organized an ice breaker game. Each person is required to find the other 3 pieces of the picture and then Shirley will

give you a sheet of questions to ask one another. Each person told something about one person from their group.

Ally reminded the members of the Saturday events.

The meeting adjourned with the Al-Anon Declaration.

We ended with an ice cream cake social.

Saturday, May 26, 2012

Ally opened the meeting at 9:11 am with a moment of silence and the Serenity Prayer.

Lois K. from Dist #25 read the 12 Concepts.

Members were shown the boxes for “Ask it Basket” and the (orange) “Evaluation Form.” The Host Committee, Officers and

Coordinators, and Nancy B., our 2013 International Convention Chair, were introduced. Ally discussed some housekeeping

issues.

Consent Agenda: Jean H. discussed the different color name tags. Jean read the Consent Agenda, which included all the

Officer and Coordinator Reports except the Financial Report. Susan C. Dist. #11 moved to approve the Consent Agenda and

Dianne M. from Dist. #31 seconded. Carried.

Treasurer’s Report: Owen H. is away. Dennis G. is acting as treasurer for this meeting. Dennis reviewed the financial

expenses of Assembly & AWSCM, which are printed on green paper. Dennis asked members to fill out expense forms to get

an idea of the cost of AWSCM, and to reimburse those members needing a reimbursement. Dennis reminded members to

send their BC/Yukon contributions to Owen H., our Treasurer. Our current bank balance is $13,579.72. We have a $10,000

GIC, our prudent reserve.

3rd

Year District Representative (DR) Reports: Ramona T. Dist. #5 (Richmond, Ladner, Tsawwassen), Raffaela M. Dist.

Shirley T., Area 81 Delegate: Explained the origin and reason of the Tent Cards for those that missed it last night. For our

dinner and dialogue, Shirley advised the DR’s not to sit with people they know.

Break

Ally called all the DR’s to come to the front of the room. 28 DR’s present. 4 DR’s are absent. Ally instructed the DR’s to fill

out form with name and email address and exchange them with a DR they don’t know.

Roll Call: Cynthia Y, Area 81 Group Records Coordinator talked about the group changes to be sent to her and not WSO.

The DR’s are able to check the WSO database of group meetings to make sure they are correct. WSO does not send group

changes to Cynthia. When Cynthia gets meeting changes, she notifies WSO. She does not deal with Alateen changes; that is

Shannon and Michelle’s job. There were 28 DR’s, 37 Voting Members, 13 Officers and Coordinators, and 15 guests. Dist. #8

no DR., Dist. #18 not here, Dist. #22 not represented, Dist. #23 no DR, Dist. #28, Dist. #29, Dist. 30 no DR.

Prepare draft for Assembly Sept 28, 29, 30, 2012 Langley

Same theme as AWSCM.

1. Location: Trial period in Langley over this year- Discussion on are we going to stay or move to another location.

- Could we have Assembly in Richmond or Tsawwassen?

- Financial graphs on the cost of having it at Langley cannot be judged as a final figure

- Having everything at the same place saves cost and trial & error of booking venues

- Host committee to set up. There is a bid sheet to show what they have to do.

2. Alateen has to be more of a focus at Assembly.

Real life Alateens via Skype. Questions for Alateens. Empower Alateens by asking them questions. Alateen Chat

room demo.

3. Discussion regarding “Al-Anon Spoken Here” and how to address members who are disruptive, share about

membership in other 12 step programs and/or use literature other than conference approved publications. Majority of

group felt the best solution is decided by group conscience and group autonomy was the principle over personalities.

4. Diversity issue - e-Literature is a way of bringing younger people into the program and build diversity. Should have

different languages of literature for people to purchase.

AWSCM 2013 - No bids

Lunch

Started with a moment of silence followed by the Serenity Prayer. Ally reminded members to fill out their Evaluation Form,

their Expense Sheet and hand in their name tag.

Delegate’s Report: Shirley T. presented her final report following her attendance at the World Service Conference.

New Business:

Geographical Areas: Discussion on how the BC/Yukon Area was divided, how the districts were originally

formed, when they were divided, what was the process to change the divisions, and the reason for the change.

Boundary changes have to be approved at AWSCM and then this motion goes to Assembly to vote on.

Alateen Chat Room- Denise said that kids don’t need a ride to get to a chat room. Two sponsors are in chat room at

all times when an Alateen comes on line. There is no age gap on an online meeting. Denise, as a public outreach

project, hands out Alateen pamphlets with tear off slips that have the Alateen chat room website. Denise will email a

copy of this to Ally, Shannon and Michelle to work on this as an area Alateen public outreach project.

e-Communities: Bill demonstrated how to assess the World Service Office website to look for new things and read

the info and share it with your GR’s. Each DR is given a user name and password to assess the WSO e-communities

site. If the DR doesn’t have an email address WSO won’t send them any material. The Area Highlights booklet is no

longer mailed out. It is online. World Service Office will help out with some technology issues.

Technology Thought Force: Table to Assembly

Remote Communities thought forces: Table to Assembly

Adjourned for dinner and dialogue with the Al-Anon Declaration.

2013 International Convention Update (IC) – After supper, Nancy B., International Convention host chair, gave an update

on what is needed for the 2013 International Convention, prices of the tickets, registration, and the number of volunteers

needed.

Planning GR Orientation for Assembly: The DRs discussed topics for the GR orientation at Assemby.

The GR Orientation should include: make sure the GR’s have the handout on the GR guidelines, the service manual, service

sponsor, how to find out who their DR is for their district, how to go to the website, going to District meetings, support for

GR’s that come to Assembly alone for the first time, acronynoms, information overload, and an copy of the last Assembly

minutes.

Schedule of Elections & Appointments: Ally reviewed the positions that need to be filled for next year. All past and current

District Representatives were asked to stand. Members were asked to remain standing if they were interested in the position.

Lois K. stood for Delegate, Alternate Delegate was Betty A. and Janis A., Archivist – nobody, Group Records Coordinator

was Alexandria S., Lynn B and Nancy S., Area Public Outreach Coordinator was Deborah B. and Nancy S. All appointed

positions are required to send your resume to the Assembly Chair.

Shirley T., Area Delegate concluded the weekend with a short summary/recap of the weekend. The members thanked Shirley

for giving 12 years of service to the area.

The meeting closed with the Al-Anon Declaration.

Outgoing Coordinators/Officers share service experience.
