    Introduction

    o Holding students to high musical standards to reflect the new courses: Guitar (Standard), Guitar Honors, and Guitar GT o Developing a viable and prosperous Guitar Program

    Curriculum Concerts Fund Raising

    Guitar (Standard)

    o Begin with setting high standards for your beginning guitarists to establish a vision for students wanting to continue to take guitar beyond Guitar I (Standard).

    Technique break bad habits! Dont let students get away with an I already can play..you dont have to teach me attitude.

    Teach Note Reading!!! Use Tab sparingly and only for rhythms that are too difficult for

    them to read at this level or for playing out of the 1st position. Always show the standard notation for the tab!!!

    Give sight-reading tests at least one per quarter

    Guitar Honors

    o Establish this level as a performance based class and held in as high regard as other performing organizations: chorus, band, and orchestra

    o Require the students to perform in a Spring Concert and let them know that

    your goal is for them to become confident performers and to strive to become good musicians!

    o Continue to develop sight reading skills Use rhythm drills frequently to improve skills Use rhythm books

    like Basics in Rhythm by Garwood Whaley Again, be sure to show standard notation along side Tab when Tab is

    used. Dont give them TAB for music they should be able to read!!! This may mean that you have to rewrite the music using Finale or Guitar Pro

    Continue to give sight-reading tests

  • o Have students learn songs on their own from song books with a partner to perform in front of the class one student learn the melody and the other student learn the accompaniment.

    o Work on ensemble pieces with the whole class and teach practices for

    working in an ensemble - proper behavior when working on in sectionals, etc.

    o Teach some electric guitar technique and finger-style/classical technique

    Guitar GT o Continue to improve music reading skills and increase in difficulty more

    quickly.

    o Require solo and group performances in class. o Teach the five positions for Major, Pentatonic, Blues, and Minor scales. o Teach material that requires the students to play out of the 1st position and

    give sight reading tests that require this as well. o Teach Barre chords and altered chords. o Spend time to teach longer units on Classical technique and literature.

    Solos, duets, trios, etc Ensemble pieces

    o Teach other finger picking styles like Travis picking.

    o Teach some Jazz technique and literature.

    o Spend time on teaching improvisation and choose or compose material that allows for many opportunities to perform improvised solos

  • o Teach the modes and comprehensive scales and techniques (licks) for getting up and down the fret board.

    o Teach other electric guitar styles like country and blues as well as rock.

    o Have students compose their original pieces in different styles given

    predetermined guidelines.

    o Have students perform in more than one concert during the year; Fall concert, winter (holiday) concert, Spring Concert, End of the Year Casual Concert and look for opportunities for them to perform outside of school.
