• A total of 82 incidents recorded predominantly resource waste (water leaks along the pipeline from the wellfield as well as around the mine)

• Pollution incidents were mostly due to hydrocarbon spills in workshops

Dept of Waste Management Audit

DWMPC audited the mine September 14-16, 2011

Legal sanction was imposed on the mine relating to three specific infractions:• Improper disposal of hydrocarbons next to a workshop • Improper management of blue area landfill site• Discharge of effluent from the blue area maturation ponds into the veld

and operating without a license – previous license expired in June 2011

The blue area landfill was closed and fines (total of P4000.00) were levied on the mine.

ISO Status and projects

• The mine is certified ISO 14001 after transfer audit from SWISS Certification to TUV

• However, the issuance of certificates have been held up by the external auditor’s internal administrative matters

• Caterpillar has donated some 13,000 trees for carbon offset

• All Debswana operation, namely, Jwaneng, Morupule and Orapa-Letlhakane mines allotted their share

• Jwaneng has launched the tree planting project and is to complete same in 2012
