David Stewart is a Creative Genius. This trait makes him excellent at his, job as his passion for technology drives his everyday life and role as System Adminis-trator at BCIC. His job spans maintaining and upholding network infrastructure, keeping the servers up to date, provid-ing technical support to staff members while keeping abreast of new technology to satisfy the company’s need. Technology-wise, David is interested in graphics, video collaboration and computer games; the former of which he utilizes at work as “the in-house graphic designer.”When David is not at work he spends time at home in Port-more, St. Catherine; where he was born, playing games on his customized computer and on the internet. Interestingly, if he’s not at home or work he is probably on vacation where he indulges in shopping for the latest technology that may be too expensive to purchase locally.David is a past student of Wolmer’s Boys School; The Portmore Community College and is currently pursu-ing a degree in Computing at the University of Tech-nology. Additionally, he is certified by the World’s best known networking company, CISCO as well as a holding a certificate from Microsoft in Virtualization. When asked why he chose a career in technology, he concedes “It is a hobby, so originally I was drawn into computing when I was younger, gaming on a 40mega-hertz PC, and the more problems you encounter, the more you want to learn: learn by your mistakes and Google.”The thing that strikes you first after meeting David is how very helpful he is. The next that you will find

out about him is that he is also a “game-head”. Hav-ing joined BCIC through the Heart Trust NTA programme as a temporary filing clerk in 2001, being promoted in 2003 to the IT department and was the Employee of the Year for that year. He admits that the most challenging but interesting part of his job are

the users as “they always have something new, they keep you abreast of what is happening technologi-cally.”By now you may realize that Davis is a unsophisticat-ed man. For him, Computer Technology= Life, in his own words “ it’s just a hobby, something that I Love, there is no end to computing technology and the quest for knowledge.”

As at August 2012, our ACTUAL YTD gross premiums have exceed-ed that which was BUGDETED.

We are meeting and surpassing our Financial targets with, our profits ahead of budget, we are currently in excess of 105% of our targeted Pre-Tax profits.

Let’s “ keep our fingers crossed” that we will not have any cata-strophic event before the end of the year because the combination of these results + the changes to the Profit Share Scheme = Happy Holidays!!

Synergy Part IThe team from our Montego Bay Branch pulled out all the stops to strengthen the business relationship with our partners at VMBS Montego Bay. On 13 July 2012 they collaborated with VMBS and pro-moted a “wide array” of products and services offered by both institutions. Patrons were able to open savings accounts with VMBS and get advice on the various products and services that they offer. For our part, a 10% discount was offered to VMBS customers on their motor vehicle insurance premium. This synergy provided BCIC and VMBS with referrals making it a successful partnership.

Synergy Part IIThe synergy continued on August 22, when BCIC joined VMBS at their Montego Bay Branch for “Welcome Wednesdays”. We (BCIC) were represented by Michelle Anderson and Raquel Grant, Sharon Palmer and Anthony Thompson who promoted our product and service offerings to customers.

Look out the Synergy Continues!!!

“I remember the days when our telephone operator whose name was Marcia Barnes had

to put a call on hold while she ran to shake the box in the

wall to get it to work. That kept her busy and fit

because she had to repeat the task after every few calls. She

nevertheless was very professional and efficient in the handling of the old telephone system. There was a chute (bucket) that was on the outside of the building

between us and 40 Duke Street that they used to let down files to the lower floors. Persons would collect

the files through the windows. If you look at the cor-ner to your left in Miss Saddler’s office you will see

one of the windows still in place. It is now covered by window blinds. There were also internal stairs from first to second floor and from second floor to third

floor. I also remember the old type writers and when com-puters came the old system was named Genie. Genie was upgraded to ISIS which is now replaced by “The

Underwriter”.Our offices were closed to the public at 4:00 p.m. and other half an hour was used to catch up on the work on our desks. We would get half the day off on Holy

Thursdays, Christmas Eves and New Year’s Eve. During the Christmas season we used to get time off for shopping. If you live far you would get one day in

comparison to “ those who live closer” who would get half day.”

What is Employers Liability Insurance?

The Factories Act of 1961 enforces upon employers strict responsibil-ity to ensure that they provide a safe working environment for their employees while they are on the job. Employer’s Liability insurance seeks to relieve the employer of finding that large sum of money

for compensation if any employee in his immediate service suffers bodily injury by accident or disease oc-curring during the period of insurance and arising out of and in the course of his employment.

Why is it needed? Staff welfare Peace of mind Protection against financial loss Legal Representation Increased Awareness of the workforce

How can a company secure this type of InsuranceThis insurance can be secured by calling the insur-ance company directly or an insurance intermediary to obtain a quotation. It is important to note that some insurance companies will not provide this insurance if other classes of insurance are not being placed with the company. To obtain a quotation, the proposer will need to provide the following information:

1. Name, address, TRN of the business/policyholder2. Period insurance is required as well as a brief descrip-tion of the business operation4. Safety procedures/programme of the business5. Number, category and wage roll of employees 6. Limit of indemnity7. Names and wages of any sub-contractors to the busi-ness 8. Any accidents since operation and if so what has been the pay out8. State if you are aware of any external factors that may compromise the safety of the workers

The underwriter will assess the risk presented, and then provide a quotation indicating the terms and condition of the policy including the premium. If the quotation is accepted by the proposer, he will then be required to complete a proposal form and pay the premium. The insurance policy is in force from the moment the premium has been paid.

What is te typical cost of the coverage?

The cost for this type insurance coverage varies de-pending on the nature of the operation of the compa-ny seeking the cover because some business operations provide a higher risk exposure than others.

Diabetes is a lifelong (chronic) disease in which there are high levels of sugar in the blood . Diabetics “have high blood sugar because their body cannot convert sugar into fat, liver and muscle cells to be stored for energy.” With this, there are varying causes and therefore types of diabetes. These include: “1.Type 1 diabetes can occur at any age, but it is most often diagnosed in children, teens, or young adults. The body makes little or no insulin. Insulin helps the body use glucose from food for energy. Daily injections of insulin are needed. 2.Type 2 diabetes makes up most of the diabetes cases. It often occurs in adulthood, but teens and young adults are now being diagnosed with it because of high obesity rates. Many people with type 2 diabetes do not know they have it.SymptomsYou should contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of these symptoms: Blurry vision Excess thirst Fatigue Frequent Urination Frequent Hunger Rapid Weight loss

Taking Control of your Blood Glucose LevelPracticing the following will assist in managing your blood glucose level: Check your blood glucose level periodically and discuss the results with your doctor Follow your diabetes meal plan. Get regular physical activity as advised by your doctor Check your blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

Everyone with diabetes must make healthy lifestyle choices: stay at a healthy weight, and excercise.Remember, Diabetes is not a death sentence, you can live a healthy life if you manage this condition.
