Our vision is to be an exemplary independent school,

combining traditional education with innovative

learning tools to develop tomorrow’s leaders.

Our mission at Boulder Country Day School is to provide a

well-rounded, classical education of academic excellence and

character development in a safe environment, inspiring our

students to reach their full potential as lifelong learners and

responsible, globally aware citizens.

characterdevelopmentBeyond social skills, we focus on the developmental needs of children, including communication, self-advocacy, empathy, integrity, conflict resolution, self-confidence, maintaining friendships, and decision making.

Page 8: BCDS-2012 Philanthropy Report

Beyond being “motivated,” BCD students are infused with intellectual curiosity, have a quest for knowledge, are moved to explore, love a challenge, and are proud of their accomplish-ments. They reach and exceed the high expectations of our excellent faculty with whom they build strong relationships.

head of school

Page 11: BCDS-2012 Philanthropy Report

The spirit of giving is alive and well at Boulder Country Day. That will become apparent as you read through this 2011-2012 Annual Report. Last school year over $400,000 was raised through our two major fundraising initiatives: The Annual Fund and Love of Technology and the Arts (LOTA). Through the generosity of the people named in this report, many enhancements to our overall program were made possible.

Everyday Excellence. Income generated from the Annual Fund touches every aspect of the Boulder Country Day experience because tuition revenue does not cover the entire operating budget. The gap is covered by the generous donors to the BCD Annual Fund. This generosity allows the school to provide the very best academic, fine arts, athletic programs, and character education for our students.

Advanced Equipment for Classrooms. The art of teaching has evolved since the turn of the century. Mastery of the basic skills still dominates in the BCD classroom; however, the methodology to deliver that curriculum is enhanced through tech-nology. The Annual Fund and LOTA provided the funds to purchase computers, Mimios (similar to a Smart Board) and Elmos (a sophisticated overhead projector) for our classrooms. All facilitate learning for our children.

Well Planned Space. The paddle raise at LOTA was significant in funding a renovation for the Administrative Building. New paint and carpet provided a much needed face lift for the building; however, the makeover of the Art Lab and the Elementary School Science Lab were the true gems of the project. Both rooms are now beautiful and are so much more conducive to learning.

Books, Books and More Books. Through the generosity of our community, an overhaul of our elementary school reading program was made possible. Over a thousand leveled reading books were purchased to provide our students a plethora of reading material spanning a wide range of abilities. The children’s reading skills have grown considerably as a result.

As Roie and I depart this wonderful community, I have total confidence that BCD will continue to grow and flourish. This belief is based on the knowledge that Boulder Country Day is comprised of a strong group of families who share a common goal with our faculty, staff and administration: providing the best educational program possible for our children. From the bottom of my heart, I thank each and every one of you for the time, energy, and philanthropic generosity you have shown during my time as Head of School at BCD.

With a thankful heart,

Mike Shields

Page 13: BCDS-2012 Philanthropy Report

Each year, donor support provides exceptional opportunities to BCD students and teachers. BCD’s generous giving has been vital since

the school’s founding in 1998. While tuition sup-plies a strong financial base, gifts from donorssustain the Everyday Excellence to ensure we honor our commitments to give children the most complete education imaginable.

more than

knowledge

Page 15: BCDS-2012 Philanthropy Report

It wasn’t until I reached high school that I truly realized and appreciated

everything I learned from BCD. I started off ahead of my peers in math

and science, and I excelled in English because of my knowledge in Latin.

I was able to use what I had learned at BCD to go beyond what I thought

I would be able to do.

At BCD it was more than just the knowledge and facts that the teachers

were teaching us. It was the closeness we had with them that helped us

succeed in all areas of our lives. Every teacher knew every student not

only by name but by her strengths and weaknesses as well.

The first two years of middle school, I struggled with math. It was when I

was in Mrs. Wilson’s 8th grade class that I realized how valuable the teach-

ers at BCD were and how the relationship I had with them made a differ-

ence in my academics. She worked with me one on one, and within a few

weeks I not only understood the information, but I excelled. Math ended up

becoming my favorite subject throughout high school and now in college.

Another person that stood out to me was Mr. Alexander. I had no idea

where I wanted to go to high school but after talking to him, he led me in

the right direction. He told me Niwot would be the best fit for me. I trusted

him with this choice because of the close relationship I had with him. He

knew not only about my academics but my personality as well and chose

the school where he knew I would succeed best at. Going to Niwot was the

best decision I could’ve made and has led me to where I am at today.”

Katie Balsley, BCD Alumni, 2008

“After just finishing my first semester of college,I constantly look back at the various things Boulder Country Day School has taught me. Not only was the actual education I received beneficial but there are things outside of the classroom that I will carry with me forever.

community

service at BCD

Page 19: BCDS-2012 Philanthropy Report

Community Service at BCD is defined as involving the community in doing

for others. We share our abundance with those who have less not just

because we can, but because we want to do so. This commitment is

evidenced throughout the entire school during the academic year. Food

drives net thousands of pounds of food for those in need; plastic bags are

recycled for the local food bank to use; hundreds of pounds of candy are

collected for the troops; shoes are given to be sent to Africa; stuffed

animals are shared so others have something special to hug; hundreds of

turkeys are collected for families so they can have a filling holiday meal.

Every grade, K – 8th, also participates in service field trips:• K, 1st, 2nd grades go to the local food bank and help sort, pack, and shelve.

• 3rd grade goes to a Head Start program to read to young children.

• 4th grade makes sandwiches and hands them out at a homeless shelter.

• 5th grade works together with senior citizens to assemble snack bags for

families with hospitalized, critically ill children.

• 6th grade assists in cleaning out ditches so the waters can flow freely again.

• 7th grade collects food and takes it to a wild animal sanctuary.

• 8th grade goes to the food bank and takes part in an economics class on

poverty, and the class prepares a budget trying to make ends meet on a

very limited budget.

Our students are learning first-hand about real-life issues facing society.

They are experiencing the joy of sharing and giving back, and they have

great empathy and compassion or others, and they are learning each

individual can make a difference. Our students embrace the school’s

mission by striving to be responsible, globally aware citizens.

There is not a specific “season of giving” at BCD. Giving is woven into the fabric of who we are as a total school community.

technology update

Page 21: BCDS-2012 Philanthropy Report

It is only through generous donations from the Annual Fund and LOTA that BCD is able to afford all the technology enhancements that enrich our campus.

As we move further into the 21st century, the reality is that these technolo-

gies are not so much enhancements as they are a way of life and learning,

making your support that much more important.

This year LOTA contributions funded a brand new computer lab in the ad-

ministration building and provided a new laptop cart for use in the elementa-

ry grades. Both are enjoyed every day by our students as they take virtual

field trips, create multimedia projects using digital images and audio, enjoy

word processing their writing assignments, and benefit from the incredible

wealth of educational resources this technology places at their fingertips.

I see the positive impact access to these resources makes for our students

every single day; thank you for making a difference!

Boulder Country Day School Athletic Report

As the Athletic Director of Boulder Country Day School, I am so proud of all

our student-athletes who wear the Bulldog uniform. While all of our teams

had winning records, it is more than the win-loss record that we hope our

athletes take along with them when they leave BCD! We teach hard work,

teamwork, dedication, accountability, and respect each and every day we

step out on the competition fields and courts!

During the 2011-2012 school year, Boulder Country Day had another success-

ful year of athletics. We competed in boys/girls cross country, girls volleyball,

boys soccer, as well as boys /girls basketball. We had over 100 student-ath-

letes, ranging from grades 5th-8th grade, competing on 9 teams.

Our cross country team competed in 6 meets during the fall season. The

race that our runners anticipated and excelled at the most is our own Boulder

Country Day Invitational. Our boys finished in the top 3 of 10 teams while

the girls finished in the top 5 of 12 teams.

The girls volleyball team and boys soccer team had very similar seasons.

Both teams only experienced a single loss for the regular season. The girls

volleyball team was able to take their success from the regular season to

take 3rd place in the annual Jr. High School Volleyball State Championships

in Fort Morgan, CO.

To wrap up the school year of athletics, the boys and girls basketball teams

(4 in total), kept in stride with the pride and success. Both the junior varsity

(JV) and varsity boys basketball teams had winning seasons. The girls

varsity team suffered only one loss all season in their first game of the year.

Henry Ford once said, “Coming together is a beginning; keeping together

is progress; working together is success.” The BCD student-athletes and

athletic department showed once again how successful it can be!

Boulder Country Day School’s Philanthropy Report allows us the opportunity to acknowledge the families, friends, grandparents, alumni, foundations, and corporations for their support of our Annual Fund Campaign.

The Annual Fund is a vital aspect of the school’s fundraising efforts. In addition

to helping bridge the gap between tuition and total costs, the generosity of our

community contributes to the salaries for our fantastic teachers, competitive

athletics, premier academic programs, the remarkable teacher-to-student ratio,

the maintenance of our beautiful campus, enriching performing and visual arts

programs, and so much more. Every dollar contributed to the Annual Fund

Campaign makes a valuable difference in every child – every day at BCD.

The donors listed in this report made gifts to the School

between August 1, 2011 and July 31, 2012.

Page 37: BCDS-2012 Philanthropy Report

The power of BCD donors coming together through the Annual Fund is

tremendous. The BCD Annual Fund raised $147,000 during 2011-2012.

This represented 3% of BCD’s operating budget – meaning that every gift

helped to sustain the extraordinary people and programs that make BCD

an exceptional place to learn. Participation in the Annual Fund is a critical

measure of the strength of a school. Our goal is 100 percent participation

from our Board of Trustees, Faculty and Staff, and our Parents. High per-

centage rates send a strong message to outside foundation donors that our

constituents value the education being provided at Boulder Country Day.

Every gift – no matter the amount – makes a difference!
