Wednesday, January 23, 2013VANCOUVER News worth sharing.
Some of Bollywood’s best and brightest stars will be coming to Vancouver when it hosts the first-ever Times of India Film Awards in April.
The three-day celebration will kick off with a “music extravaganza” at Pacific Coli-seum and popular Bollywood films will be screened in multiplexes across the prov-ince.
Stars such as Shah Rukh Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Chi-trangada Singh will walk the red carpet for the grand event on April 6 at BC Place.
“The Times of India com-municates with 90 million people every single day and they’ll be communicating about British Columbia to the people that they speak
to,” Premier Christy Clark said at Tuesday’s extravagant press conference at the Van-couver Convention Centre. “This is an incredible oppor-tunity for us to sell our prov-ince.”
The province will spend $9.5 million to host the awards and an additional $1.5 million to host a B.C.-India business forum and other trade events during the awards.
Clark estimates that the events will bring $13 mil-lion to $18 million into B.C.’s economy.
Blockbuster filmmaker Karan Johar, who was de-scribed at the event as the “Steven Spielberg of India,” attributed the success of the country’s film industry in Canada to its loyal audience.
“They’re much more In-dian at heart than any of us are,” he said. “The diaspora love has made Indian cinema even more impactful, even more global.”
Clark said part of the deal is that one Bollywood pro-duction will be filmed in the province, using B.C. suppli-ers.
