Span of control used in an organization
determines whether the structure is tall or flat.
Tall structure has a narrow span and more
hierarchical levels.
Flat structure has a wide span, is
horizontally dispersed and fewer hierarchicallevels.
The trend has been toward wider spans of
control.

This is the oldest as well as the most common type of
organization
Used by many concerns especially small ones The characteristic feature of this kind of organisation
is that the line of authority flows vertically from the top
most executive to the lowest sub ordinate
Strict discipline exists in the enterprise Clear lines of accountability
Who reports to whom is clear
