Welcome to this years edition of the BC Holstein News Annual Directory! This year marks the 125th anniversary of Holstein Canada as British Columbia hosts the 2009 National Holstein Convention in April.After hundreds of calls, thousands of faxes and what feels like a million emails this Special Convention Issue is complete! We would like to take this opportunity to welcome the many Holstein convention attendees to our beautiful province and with so many new Holstein enthusiasts using the directory this year, it is our hope that this publication will provide you with all the important contact information that you will need to navigate your visit and serve as a resource once you leave.

To all our regular readers, the BC dairy producers and the agri businesses that support our dairy industry, we are sure that you will find this issue will become a valuable reference guide for the year ahead. After a staggering amount of work it is ready for your use!

We are now entering the second year in cyberspace with our website at www.holsteinnews.com. Since its debut in February 2008, we have seen our traffic rapidly increasing with each month surpassing the last with traffic. On behalf of the board and the Holstein breeders of British Columbia, I warmly welcome you to our beautiful province. From the Okanagan Valley to the Fraser Valley and on to Vancouver Island, the beauty and history is incredible.

Take advantage of the scenic tours as well as the farm tours for they will be second to none.

Congratulations to Ridley Wikkerink and family (Wedgwood Holsteins) and to Gerald Poelman and family (Sunny Vale Farm Ltd.) both from Vancouver Island, for being our new Master Breeder herds for B.C. this year.

Come and join us in the fun and celebration of the 125th anniversary of Holstein Canada and to help us make this National Convention the best ever.

Promotional campaigns have described our province as Super, Natural BC where tourist activities include hiking, year-round golf, wine tasting, whale watching, afternoon tea and everything in between. The excitement is building as BC prepares to host the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Welcome to Super, Natural BC! We are excited to host the 125th anniversary Holstein Convention! It is our great pleasure to showcase the Rich History and Beauty of British Columbia.

In 1983, we hosted the first Convention ever held in the west, and the first using the three day convention format. It was a huge success. Prior to this, the annual meetings were one day and were only held in Ontario or Quebec.

We are thrilled to be hosting our third National Convention, and invite you to explore BC, if you are from far or near. This is a unique opportunity to come out and meet breeders and dairymen from all across our country, and from other countries as well. Take part in one of our tours to show different parts of BC, and the

Fraser Valley. Go exploring! Take a holiday, make a weekend of it. Come to the big city for a grand party.

Our committees have been working very hard to make everything happen. These are volunteers who are committed to hosting you; come on out and enjoy the fruits of their labour. After taking the 2008 BC Outstanding Young Farmers Award, Dave and Lisa Taylor traveled on to compete at the national event in Calgary. Bringing home the national award to Vancouver Island, the couple exemplifies excellence in agriculture and their contribution to their community. Dave and Lisa of Viewfield Farms Ltd. operate a 330 acre farm, milking 300 cows. In addition to running the dairy farm, the Taylors found another way to share their property; operating a 20-acre private campground where they host picnics, reunions and weddings.

Gerald Poelman, Jannes and Nell Poelman of Sunny Vale have dedicated their Master Breeder award in memory of John Poelman who passed away in 1996. Son John was an integral part of the breeding program at Sunny Vale and is largely responsible for the foundation cows that contribute the points for this shield. After the loss of John, the family rallied together to continue to build on the foundation that had been laid. Hiring Mark Whatman of Australia, who was with Sunny Vale for eight years, helped to

achieve that. His love of dairy cattle and breeding knowledge continued to strengthen our herd and our pursuit of Master Breeder. In addition, Johns daughter Amanda, as well as many other employees have also played a role in contributing to the Master Breeder Shield.

Without a doubt the most influential cow family in the herd stems from their first homebred Excellent, POELMAN BRENDA MAxIMUS Ex 11*. Brenda lived to be 18 years old and was a tremendously hard topped cow, with strong udder attachments and good feet and legs. She truly transmitted these qualities to her daughters, including her granddaughter POELMAN BRENDA RLB ROLAND Ex-5E 15*, Sunny Vales most famous cow. This cow was #1 in Canada for Type at various times during the 90s, and today, although there are cows with more brood stars and cows that are scored higher, for the combination of both Classification and Brood Stars Brenda is still #1 in the country.

Living to be 15 years old, Brenda RLB Roland completed six Superior Lactations and continued the Brenda family breeding tradition through her six Excellent daughters, all of which have exceptional dairy character, tremendous loin strength and strong udder attachments.

We are very proud to have achieved the Master Breeder designation among Canadian Holstein Breeders. We sincerely appreciate those who have purchased cattle and embryos from us over the years and we value the life-long friends we have made along the way. Without the support of our family, friends and industry colleagues this achievement wouldnt have been possible.

The Wedgwood Endeavour Emily VG family has been at

Wedgwood since the mid 60s and has to be considered one of the most influential cows that has contributed to the Master Breeder shield. Emily really got the family going as she lived to be 18 years old and produced 156,000 kg lifetime and has thrown a family that consistently has good udders and makes a high percentage of VG or Ex cows.

The FRUEH STARBUCK JASPER Ex family is another family that has many descendants in the herd today. Jasper produced many big open framed cows including two Ex Lindy daughters, one Ex 4E, the other Ex 5E. Jaspers grand dam is a former Canadian lifetime Champion producer and as pointed out by Holstein expert Doug Blair, interestingly traces about 8 10 generations back to the same cow as the Emily cow did.

Wedgwood has consigned cattle to sales across North America and held several reduction sales in 1991, 1999, 2001, and 2006 that have seen their cattle dispersed from coast to coast. In addition, cattle have been exported since the 70s, and along with Stanhope exported larger numbers in the 1990s to the United Kingdom, Ireland as well as Mexico, Japan and Korea.

Ridley would advise young breeders to aim to breed the balanced Canadian cow with special attention to conformation, producing a cow that if managed well can produce for many lactations and be very profitablethe kind of cow that can attain a Master Breeder shield.
