pinot noir

In the heart of the Comox Valley, on a slope facing the Salish Sea, 40 Knots Vineyard & Estate Winery crafts wines distinctly shaped by this windswept, sun soaked microclimate.

This savoury and earthy Pinot Noir has a juicy acidity and just a hint of spice. Try it with roasted duck, tender veal, or your favourite wild mushroom creation.

At press time, while editing the final pages of this wonderful issue,

my ears where treated to the returning sounds of springtime. The birds were merrily chirping and I even had a fat quail on my window ledge cooing and admiring the mason jar full of fresh picked daffodils on my desk. After a long winter, this time of year feels like someone flicked the switch from black and white to Technicolor jolting your senses back to life.Collecting the news for this issue also sparked me back to life as I read about all of the amazing spring wine releases coming soon and the incredible array of wine country events in store for us this year. Hooray! I see that the glamourous and easy to pair rosés are being offered by many more wineries in many different styles. If

you have not yet been converted—it’s only a matter of time. Please enjoy every moment of spring as it deepens into the treasured summer. Travel to all of our glorious wine regions stretched across the province – from Kamloops to the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island, there is so much to taste! Shop direct from your farmers, support your local wineries and drinkeries and be reminded the #bcwine life is the best. Cheers!

Wine, Wind,

and Sea

riginally founded and planted by a retired tugboat captain in 2007, the 40 Knots Vineyard & Estate Winery is in now the loving hands of

owners Brenda Hetman-Craig and Layne Robert Craig. The couple heard the siren’s call to the island while living in Calgary and fell in love with the stunning 24-acre vineyard. Located in the Comox Valley, overlooking the Salish Sea, the property has the largest grape vineyard in the Comox Valley and one of the biggest on the island. The microclimate of the Comox Valley allows warmer temperatures providing a unique terroir for the island grapes to thrive. The Craig’s have chosen to celebrate the whole of the BC winemaking world by creating two distinct labels. The Stall Speed labels, a nod to Layne’s former occupation as a pilot and his love of flying, are made with Okanagan grapes whereas the 40 Knots label is created using their own island estate grapes.“We have lots happening,” Brenda explains, “We will be bottling at the end of June and we are most excited to be releasing Ziggy, our 2014 Siegerrebe which is absolutely stellar. Along with this beautiful wine we are releasing our popular Pinot Gris, Gamay Rosé, our Uncloaked Chardonnay, and Whitecaps Blend.  These are all very exciting wines from the 2014 vintage as it was most valuable weather for growing grapes and our wines are all now made by the chief winemaker of Okanagan Crush Pad, Mr. Matt Dumayne,” Brenda explains.40 Knots has tons of fun events planned for the year – and don’t forget you can book this gorgeous venue for yourself! The property can

host a party of 150. May 20th will mark the launch of their new Wine Wednesday events, each one with a unique theme, they will kick off with the Soothing Jazz Night with Sinclair and Bennett providing the entertainment of vocals, blues, folk and jazz that includes a delicious southern meal of jambalaya.” And they are romantics too—how could you not be living on an island winery?

The 40 Knots Promise Box includes: a bottle of Stall Speed Meritage, two wine glasses, and a card to write a love note on all packaged in an antiqued Cumberland Crate. The romantic part is that couples are to write each other a note or a mutual promise, and then close the crate and open it together in the future when the wine has aged to celebrate a momentous occasion. I love this!

SAMANTHA MCLEODSPECIAL TO THE SUN

Craft beer and food lights up Carlos Gomes’s life.

“If I could, I would cook fine dining meals and serve craft beer to my guests every day,” said the youthful father of two who owns and operates the Vancouver Food tour company.

So the next best thing for the food-ie entrepreneur is the Gastown Beer ’n Bites tour.

For the last four years, Gomes has been guiding vacationers and locals on a tour of Vancouver’s historical locale where the legendary Gassy Jack, a sailor turned bar-keep, opened Vancouver’s first saloon 147 years ago.

The tour winds through the cobbled streets of Vancouver’s oldest neighbour-hood and is an unforgettable experience of where “history meets the contempo-rary.”

“History is in the four pure ingredients of the beer; water, malted barley, hops and yeast. While the contemporary influ-ences are found in the ingredients the chefs and brewmasters use to infuse the small batches of craft beer,” said Gomes.

This tour runs from Monday to Sunday

throughout the year — 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. — and is $75 per person. For that, you get an evening or afternoon of three locales, taste three beer flights and nibble on delectable bites of chef creations.

But the best part comes when Gomes opens up on the secrets of what you are drinking and eating — the perfect pair-ings for every craft beer.

“Just imagine, with four simple ingre-dients combined with the creativity of chefs and Brewmasters, magic in a glass happens,” he said.

Another not-to-be-missed epicurean adventure is Gomes’s Vancouver Urban Beer Tour.

“Here we take the adventurous on a tour of the bigger breweries and get behind the scenes of some of the better-known brands. Of course, there is plenty of catered food to go with it.”

Whether it’s corporate events, birth-days, stagettes, stags, reunions or retire-ments, vacation or staycations, conven-tions or interventions, Carlos and his team can create moments that are nev-er to be forgotten in Vancouver. “I hope my guests leave with beautiful memo-ries, gain knowledge, new friends, and have as much pleasure in the experience as I do.”

COOL CLIMATE REDS & WHITES – RECLINE RIDGE SPECIALITES

CELEBRATE SUMMER WITH LARCH HILLS COOL CLIMATE WINES

Recline Ridge Winery in the Shuswap is heralding spring and summer this

year with the release of new vin-tage reds. Like their other cool climate wines, they’re certain to be received well. After all, Recline Ridge won a total of 23 awards in 2014, including several Gold and Platinum medals. The winery will be busy this late spring and summer, pouring their wines at Kelowna’s WestJet Wine Tastings at the Okanagan Spring Wine Festival in Kelowna May 1st and 2nd and participating in Penticton’s Bacchanalia that same weekend. During the summer on long weekends, Recline Ridge will be hosting live entertainment on its licensed outdoor patio.

The ongoing mission at Recline Ridge is to educate guests and customers on the exciting wines of the Shuswap. “Wines produced in the Shuswap are the result of a selection process for the grapes best suited for the region,” says co-owner Graydon Ratzlaff. “Colder winters demand hardier varietals, and a shorter growing season requires early ripening grapes. The resulting white wines are off-dry, cool, crisp, and refreshing, with very fruit-forward characteristics. The reds are often lighter in style, but are packed with fl avour and offer an alternative to mainstream varietals.”Producing fi ne Shuswap wines is what keeps Recline Ridge

moving forward. “We aim for continuous improvement on all our wines,” says Graydon, “to

ensure best quality and value.”

~ Dona Sturmanis

L arch Hills Win-ery is greeting late spring and

summer by releas-ing several new highly anticipated 2014 wines: a fruity, citrusy Riesling; an herbaceous, dis-tinctive Marechal Foch; a lively, food-friendly Lemberger and a lightly-oaked, smooth Grandview Bench Red. The summer will be busy for this popu-lar winery, located just outside Salmon Arm in the Shus-wap. Besides new wine releases, there will be visitors arriving from all over, including Alberta, all driv-ing the lengthy ascent to Larch Hills, which is BC’s highest alti-tude winery. Guests are greeted by owners Jack and Hazel Man-ser with friendly chat, tastes of their unique cool-climate wines and the breathtaking views of the Shuswap.Open since 1997, Larch Hills was the fi rst to grow European varietal wine grapes so far north. Winners over the years of many awards,

they have earned a loyal following for their wines made from their estate vineyard including Orte-ga, Madeleine Angevine, Sieg-errebe and Agria. Foch, Merlot and Gewürztraminer are among the grapes sourced from contract vineyards. All grapes are crushed, processed, and the wine made right on the premises.Larch Hills wines are no longer corked but screw capped – a con-venient way to enjoy their great wines.

The Thompson Valley, once the true Wild West is now home to a working ranch and the soon

to open Monte Creek Ranch Winery. The winery is located 10 minutes east of Kamloops, BC, just off of Highway 1 and will launch their wine tasting room for the first time this June. Frontiersmen and prospectors once roamed these lands and even infamous train robbers, including Billy Miner, ventured here to find their fortunes out west. It’s now a place for friends and family to gather to enjoy some true western hospitality and home to a state of the art winemaking facility.

At Monte Creek Ranch livestock share the property with grapevines and wildlife on its picturesque 1200 acres. Visitors are drawn in by the beauty and can now stay a while for a wine tasting and shop for local products, such as the honey from the ranch’s own local hives. They encourage you to bring a picnic, or purchase a local cheese and meat plate should you not have planned ahead, and enjoy a feast on the patio or outside in the park-like settings. The ranch is family friendly and even hosts events such as weddings, concerts and live theatre.

2014 Monte Creek Ranch Rosé $15.69Newly released, this rosé has a deep pink hue with aromas of strawberry puree, hibiscus, cherry pie and caramel. On the palate there is juicy strawberry and raspberry flavours and good acidity. Great wine for picnicking, pair with some country pâté and a baguette, or serve up with some grilled sausages at your next BBQ.

50th Parallel Estate Winery was created because someone had a unique idea. 50th Parallel’s

genesis resulted from that idea being used as a pickup line on a houseboat trip that birthed a power couple in 2000. Fast forward eight years and the property that is now their estate winery was purchased and that pickup line became reality. Now Sheri-Lee Turner-Krouzel and Curtis Krouzel are the one-two punch behind one of the most exciting new wineries in the Okanagan Valley. The site has pedigree, having been a hybrid vineyard site for Ste-Michelle Winery up until the pull-out program 1988. The land remained unused until 2008 when Curtis and Sheri-Lee purchased it to start their

Pinot Noir-focused winery. To give you an idea of how much thought went into this winery, consider this. Because Pinot Noir burns easily in the sun, the rows are oriented at bearing 205 degrees South West which puts grape clusters in shade as the hottest daytime temperatures are reached between 1:00 and 3:00pm. There are many examples of their attention to detail, but you will need to take the “Grape to Glass Tour”. For $30 this exceptional tour includes a vineyard and winery tour, and tasting. Reservations are required so check their website for details. Sheri-Lee is particularly excited to book special events at 50th. A dedicated space high in the

vineyard is available for weddings and special occasions that has a view that you will be talking about for a lifetime. The facility is accessible by car, boat, or helicopter.

Baco Noir is a hybrid grape variety that used

to be more common in the Okanagan Valley until the late 1980’s. In planting the vineyards for Ancient Hill, Richard and Jitske Kamphuys sought to create wines with intense fruit flavours using only grapes that were appropriate for growing on their property northeast of Kelowna. “I want to make really tasty wines,” says Richard. Baco Noir turns out to be perfectly suited to the unique microclimate of their estate vineyard.Making Baco Noir the flagship wine on this special property has been working out well for Ancient Hill, who have developed a fruity, concentrated style. Most hybrids are made by crossing Vitis Vinifera grapes with Vitis Labrusca grapes. In 1894, French nurseryman Francois Baco opted

instead to use a Vitis Riparia for the crossing that resulted in the grape he called Baco Noir. The result is that this grape does not suffer from the off-putting, foxy flavours normally associated with Labrusca hybrid grapes. Two different tank samples of the forthcoming vintage of Baco Noir show very dark colour, intense fruit flavours, and full palate without being overpowering. The variety is easy on tannins as well so

for those who like their red wines smooth without grippy tannins (like Syrah), Baco Noir could be for you. The 2012 Baco Noir will be released just in time for summer.  Ancient Hill will be hosting a Dutch ‘King’s Day’ get together at the winery on Sunday, May 3rd during regular opening hours.  Contact the winery for more details.

SUMMERHILL PYRAMID WINERY – A TEAM WITH A VISION

anada’s most visited winery needs a great management team to keep the ball rolling. Winery and vineyards,

bistro and gardens—all organic—require the care and attention of people who are committed to the Summerhill vision. Tarrah MacPherson, who was appointed vice president of operations last year, is a perfect fi t, CEO Ezra Cipes says.“Tarrah has a wonderful variety of attributes, with a combination of education and experience that is hard to match, but just as important is her personality. It didn’t take her long to become a truly valuable asset to our team.”The Nova Scotia born and raised Tarrah didn’t really take wine too seriously until she travelled in Italy.“Living in London about 15 years ago, it was travelling in Italy that did it,” she says. “Going to tiny places where you ate donkey and you drank Asti.”At the time she was working for a large fi rm, doing the work she was educated for, accounting. During university she had started working in the hospitality industry and would happily have carried on. Her parents insisted she fi nish her education, so she earned a degree in accounting. She worked at hotels to pay her way. From university, she went to London and took a job that paid well and led to her developing a passion for wine.“About a year after that fi rst trip to Italy I started having conversations with some of my bosses about wine. All of a sudden I had something to contribute to the discussions.” When she saw a wine appreciation course being advertised by the London School of Economics (irony acknowledged) she signed up and every Monday night for 8 weeks she spent 3 hours immersed in the world of wine. And loved it.She decided accounting wasn’t her passion, moved back to Nova

Scotia and began to manage a 56-seat Italian restaurant. It wasn’t long before she signed up for a sommelier course, jumping to the third level because of her London and Italy experiences. “It was super tough,” she admits. “It covered so many disciplines—chemistry, biology, geology, history, economics, politics.”Tarrah’s next job was in Halifax, where she was employed at Nova Scotia’s fi rst private wine

store. She didn’t get a chance to tire of the work. A headhunting fi rm recruited her to become a wine sales rep in Toronto, an endeavor she never really settled into. “Toronto is such a tough market to work in and I didn’t know anyone. I was cold-calling accounts to sell them high-end European wines. I didn’t love the work, and I certainly didn’t love the weather and the traffi c.”She jumped at the chance to get

back into the hotel industry and headed back to the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, for her third tour of duty with the brand. Here is where she truly fell in love with BC wines, and ended up managing the hotels vast list of local and international labels. When Delta Hotels purchased the Grand Hotel in Kelowna, Tarrah was quick to jump at the opportunity to live in the Okanagan. This is where she would fi rst meet Summerhill Pyramid Winery president Steve Cipes. They would continue their friendship by telephone when she moved to Ottawa and then Fredericton. “I knew for a long time that I would eventually work with Steve.”Steve respected her business and fi nancial acumen and offered her a contract to become the winery’s vice president of operations and last March she made the move back across the country to take her fi rst job at a winery.“My top priorities were profi tability and to bring a bit more polish and structure to Summerhill. I had to move carefully though, because Summerhill is a very successful business model. Another priority became people management. As a small to medium family business, Summerhill has people who wear many hats. The absence of a full time human resources director stretched us pretty thin this past year. But we have a great core of people in key positions here.”“We work to encourage and empower employees, and to create a safe productive environment where people don’t fear making mistakes. If you aren’t making mistakes you aren’t taking the risks needed to move ahead.”With new chef Jonas Stadtlander in the kitchen and Sunset Organic Bistro newly renovated, visitors will see some obvious changes, others throughout the winery are less noticeable, but no less important.“If you aren’t moving forward you are moving backward,” Tarrah says.

DO THE FANDANGO!

C hef Rod Butters and Audrey Surrao of RauDZ Creative Concepts have supported

BC farmers, artisans, winemakers and other local suppliers from the beginning. In the current location since 2001, fi rst as Fresco and then RauDZ Regional Table, it was never a trend—rather a way of life. The walls provide testament to this philosophy with photographs of suppliers and their world-class fruits, vegetables, fi sh, bread and wine that you’ll fi nd on your plate and in your glass. Each portrait tributes a local farmer

or producer who contributes to the success of the regionally focused creative menu of Chef Butters, Executive Chef Brock Bowes, and the RauDZ culinary team. It’s estimated that over 50 suppliers who are local and who sustain the region’s economy are supported by RauDZ. Take Curtis Stone of Green City Acres and his SPIN farming, who converted Kelowna lawns to productive organics which he delivers to restaurants on his customized bicycle. There’s Jon and Sher Alcock of Sunshine Farm, who grow amazing organic vegetables

such as heirloom carrots and tomatoes and dedicate their farm as a site for Vocational Development Opportunities to Adults in the Community Living Sector. There’s fi shmonger and Oceanwise advocate Jon Crofts of Codfathers Seafood Market, that ranks a menu tribute with the seafood feature named ‘Codfathers Selection’. How about Fester’s Peppers from Oliver with over 35 organic pepper varieties from

which Doug Haggerty smokes and prepares RauDZ’s spice mixes? Or Okanagan Grocery Artisan Breads, where Monika Walker and her team bake without mixes or preservatives over 15 unique, hand-shaped breads including a sourdough with a 100+ year-old starter. That’s a wee representation without even including the impressive beverage and wine list focusing on local.

At Kalala Organic Estate Winery, organic viticulture is not a trend, it’s a long-term

commitment. They have been certified organic in the vineyards for five years and strive towards self-sustainability in the vineyard. Currently, their vineyard team is busy tending to the budding vines, ensuring that they all get the best possible start to the growing season. This summer, the winery will be releasing its 2013 Pinot Noir ($21). A great summer red, this Pinot has delicious aromas of coconut, cassis, and leather with flavours of succulent red cherries, vanilla, and cocoa. We can also look forward to the release of the 2012 Aspire (blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and

Syrah) ($21). Similar in style to the 2011 vintage, this crowd-pleasing wine pairs nicely with grilled meats, making it perfect for early-summer BBQs. With the arrival of the warmer weather, so too arrives the Spring Okanagan Wine Festival. The team at Kalala is excited to once again bring you a taste of their culture with their Where East Meets West event. On Saturday, May 9, from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm please stop by the winery with a donation for the Westside Community Food Bank to enjoy samples of Kalala’s beautiful organic wines perfectly paired with mouth-watering East Indian tapas. SAGE HILLS WINERY: WHEN THE DREAM BECOMES REALITY

THE COVE SPARKS INDULGENT OFFERINGS

E ven as a small boy, Rick Thrussell of Sage Hills Winery and Vineyard

had an affinity for wine. At the age of 6 his family allowed him one small glass at special holidays, at 12 he could discern aromas and nuances and at 18, when other boys were carting a case of beer, Rick brought a bottle of wine. While working as a homebuilder in the Lower Mainland, his love affair with wine continued as he took wine appreciation and Sommelier classes. After deciding it was time to retire he turned his eyes towards his lifelong dream and searched for the perfect vineyard site. Washington and Oregon were considered, but in 2006 Rick found the perfect site in Summerland. It met his criteria: windy for organic farming practices and an amazing view. Perched on the side of a hill looking over Lake Okanagan, it is truly a spectacular site for Sage Hills winery. “I wanted to create a Grand Cru model: low yields, terroir driven, meticulous standards and

organic to create high quality, small case lot wines that reflect the land where they are grown.”Sage Hills has a new tasting room that is opening this spring, here you’ll be able to see the land and understand the passion that goes into every bottle—and share a little of Rick’s vision. He says, “People told me about starting a vineyard and making wine. What they didn’t tell me was how much work it was! I guess be careful what you wish for..!” But I get the feeling that he wouldn’t be anywhere else.

2013 Syrah $48.00A brand new release. A single variety Syrah with aromas of vanilla and pepper and intriguing notes of cigar box and chocolate.

Wine lovers can also have the chance to taste Sage Hills wines at the Garagiste North-Small Guys Wine Festivals scheduled for June 27th in Vancouver and September 27th in Kelowna! www.garagistenorth.com

D o rich dessert wines tempt your palate? Is

sipping port-style your idea of a perfect after-dinner reward?Summerland’s Sonoran Estate Winery is the place to visit. Known for their well-priced reds, whites, and rosé, the Smits family intro-duced their fi rst forti-fi ed sweet wine last summer: Happy Dragon. Recently, they bottled another: Golden Drag-on. In March, Sonoran focused on blending trials, the tasty but serious work required to produce additional well-balanced, port-style wines set to be released this summer.“Happy Dragon was very popular last season. We wanted to make some-thing different than icewine. Few win-eries make a port-style, and the con-sumer demand was there,” explains proprietor Ada Smits.

Ada reminds visitors that Sonoran is no longer at their Gartrell Road loca-tion, but a few kilome-tres north of Summer-land off Hwy 97 (21606 Bridgeman Road). Open 10-6 daily. Additionally, Ada’s excit-ed for son Pieter Smits who is hoping to open his new winery early this summer.

IT’S PARTY TIME AT DIRTY LAUNDRY VINEYARD

(L-R) Roch Fortin, Bob Campbell (Dirty Laundry president) and Paul & Holly Cecconi (of Brodo Kitchen).

ith one of the most stunning patios in the Okanagan, Dirty Laundry Vineyard is ready to celebrate

warmer weather, and of course, their deliciously fun wines. To kick off the season, Dirty Laundry Vineyard is bringing the Maritimes to Summerland for their third annual Roch & Troll Lobster Party on May 9. Featuring sustainably caught lobster cooked by New Brunswick born Roch Fortin, this event combines seafood, wine and plenty of laughs. Tickets are $89 and available on the Dirty Laundry website. If you’re not able to make the big party, don’t worry! Throughout the spring and summer, the winery will be bringing back Roch Fortin to cook lobster lunches on the patio. Plan to spend the day sipping the new 2014 vintages in the tasting room and then meander over to the patio to enjoy your East Coast meets West Coast lunch with all the fi xings. You might even get a glimpse of the Kettle Valley Steam train as it chugs just below the patio. Book in advance (the lobster arrives fresh!) by calling the wine shop or emailing [email protected]. Tickets are $34.95 and lunches are available on May 17, May 31, June 13 and June 21.

Additional dates throughout the summer are listed online. The patio is also the perfect place to enjoy a build-your-own deli-style picnic basket, available every day the winery is open. At the wine shop create your own lunch by picking up meats, cheeses, crackers and other goodies to satisfy your appetite and try the wines with food pairings.Highlighted while you dine on the patio will be Dirty Laundry’s newly bottled vintages of the Secret Affair white blend, Dangerous Liaison Merlot/Malbec blend and Woo Woo Vines Gewürztraminer. The 2014 Secret Affair will be the perfect match to the lobster lunches while the 2014 Dangerous Liaison and 2014 Woo Woo Vines Gewürztraminer are well matched with spicier foods. Try the Dangerous Liaison with your charcuterie lunch too. The fun continues at Dirty Laundry Vineyard in June as they plan special activities (plus a lobster lunch) for the third annual “Heard It Through the Grapevine” tour of Bottleneck Drive wineries. Expect entertainment and titillating experience. And, starting Father’s Day (June 21), the winery will play host to live entertainment every weekend. Check their website calendar for details.

YARD WINE IS RELEASED AT UPPER BENCH

W hile Upper Bench Winery & Creamery acquired the current location relatively

recently (2011), the team has been building expertise and traditions in wine and cheesemaking on the Naramata Bench for years. When Gavin Miller visited the Okanagan from England in 1995 he met Shana at Poplar Grove Winery. They soon married and returned to the UK. To pursue his passion to grow grapes and make wine in BC, they returned

in 1997. Shana embarked on her calling to the art of cheesemaking in 2002, learning from the original cheesemaker at Poplar Grove, Sandra Chalmers. While Gavin and Shana worked in industry and raised their family, they planted 140 of their own vines in their home garden to create a one-barrel stock of personal wine annually. They lovingly tended the vines as a family, and even as toddlers, their children participated. Gavin’s co-fermented Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon became such a favourite, when they attended family and friends’ gatherings, they were always asked to bring their “yard wine.” Flash forward to their partnership with Wayne and Margareta Nystrom to rebuild a former winery to include a state-of-the-art creamery. Today, Upper Bench offers a line of cheeses along with highly lauded wines, and old acquaintances still request “yard wine.” Inspired by that insiders’ tradition, and facilitated by the availability of high quality grapes of those varietals, Gavin decided to broaden Upper Bench’s portfolio with Yard Wine for us all to enjoy. Watch www.upperbench.ca for release dates and join Upper Bench’s Curds & Corks Club to be fi rst in line.

T he Bench Market exudes joy for great food while exemplifying commitment

to sustainability. In recognition, The Bench was the Penticton & Wine Country Chamber of Com-merce’s 2015 recipient of the Business Excellence Award for Sustainability. Owners Heather and Chef Stewart Glynes explain that sustainability begins with their community focus. “Much of our produce is from local farm-ers who deliver in-season right to our door, with minimal to no packaging,” says Stewart. “Pro-teins are from ethically-treated animals from small farms in BC. Our honey, sourced in Pentic-ton, and our organic coffee from Summerland’s Backyard Beans are both delivered in reusable containers. And we have worked hard to source local, artisan retail items from BC, especially from the Okanagan Valley.” They have an active composting program to trim waste further. “Each week one of our farmers takes our coffee grounds, fruit and vegetable trimmings, egg shells and other com-postables to his Olalla farm to nourish his next crops,” says Heather. “With input from Stewart, he plans what to grow that we’ll buy spring to winter.” Additionally, local charities collect refundable cans for fundraising and

end-of-day baking is donated to Penticton’s Soupateria. The Bench Market encourages cycling with bike racks on-site and through sponsor-ship of Granfondo Axel Merckx and Bike-to-Work Week. Other efforts to improve efficiencies at the building itself include replacing the roof, us-ing low wattage bulbs and post-con-sumer paper products, and installing new double-paned windows. From the building, to local food, cof-fee and grocery goods, Stewart and Heather are working hard to keep things green – and delicious!

A TASTE OF SERENDIPITY

NEW AWARDS SPARK THERAPY’S APPETITE FOR CHANGE

S ometimes you just get lucky. I dropped into Serendipity Winery in March just as owner

Judy Kingston and her daughter and winemaker-in-training Katie O’Kell were about to take a new employee through a complete tasting of the Serendipity wine lineup. From my notes:

2011 White LiePlayfully named because Judy was (shhhh….) a lawyer before she went straight and became a farmer/winery owner. This vintage is still bright and lively, and will pair nicely with white fi sh, oysters, bruschetta, cantaloupe, pears and Gouda cheese.

2013 Sauvignon BlancThe Serendipity terroir is producing Sauvignon Blanc grapes much like

New Zealand’s. The lovely pink grapefruit notes compliment the more expected green grass, dill and asparagus aromas. Perfect with any grilled white fi sh.

2013 Pinot GrigioA food friendly version that will pair with spicy and Italian recipes. A visiting Italian winemaker paid the ultimate compliment—“You are the only winery in North American that is making a true Pinot Grigio.”

2014 RoséJudy never expected to be making a rosé or sparkling wine, thinking she’d never have enough grapes. But she’s found a source, and Katie even has her own batch of bubbly on the go. “This is the most iconic tea party wine of all—welcome to Alice in Wonderland!”

2010 Red Handed For $20.00 this is one of the best BC red wine values to be found. Named as a dig at her ex-husband, Judy says she’ll make a similar wine in the future, but with a different name. “I’ve moved on!”

~ Lorne Eckersley

Spring heralds the season of growth, paralleling the dynamic changes happening

at Therapy Vineyards and Guesthouse on the Naramata Bench.“This is our fi rst season with big changes,” says GM Judi Skinner. “There’s new packaging, new retail shopping, and we’re really happy with our new sales team. We’re especially excited to have some fast, quality food here, and we welcome families. We’re pet and kid-friendly too!”Therapy’s thrilled to have Lil’s Kitchen Wood-fi red Pizzas open on-site mid-June. Enjoy quick and delicious homemade pizzas and grilled cheese on freshly baked bread, daily 10-6. The outdoor tables seat 45, but patrons can also order take-out. Future plans include a parking expansion.Therapy’s also been fi ne-tuning

it’s branding. They’re keeping the popular cartoon-Freuds on their top-selling wines (Pink Freud, Freud’s Ego, and Freudian Sip), but dropping the inkblot labels in favour of sepia coloured photos of Freud. Starting with the 2012 Pinot Noir, 2013 Gewürztraminer, 2013 Sauvignon Blanc, and 2013 Pinot Gris, all single-varietal wines will feature the new look.Recently, Therapy won six medals at the 2015 Great Northwest Wine Competition, including Gold (2013 Fizziotherapy) and two Silvers (2013 Sauvignon Blanc and 2013 Freudian Sip).“With our new sales agents across Canada, we have to step up our game to keep up with demand,” says Judi, proud of this winter’s impressive sales increase. “It’s great to be concerned about running out of wine!”

2012 Pinot Noir - $22.99 Winemaker Steve Latchford barrel-aged his award-winning French-style red to reveal sensuous notes of plum, black cherry and spice. Excellent with smoked cheeses and charcuterie.

A new shop and art gallery is set to welcome visitors to one of Naramata’s

most colourful and aromatic destinations, Forest Green Man Lavender Farm. Owners

Karolina Born-Tschuemperlin and Doug Mathias spent the winter fi nishing the two-storey space that will allow them to show off an ever-increasing selection of lavender products, and the artistic

expressions of Karolina and other creative types.“We only have fi ve acres, so we have to do about a hundred things to make a living here,” Karolina laughs. In season, fresh produce – think heirloom tomatoes – are sold on site, but once the 2500 lavender plants are in bloom, a dazzling array of products are produced. Soaps, essential oils (distilled in the gorgeous copper still), bath salts, lotions, linen water, tea, sugar, honey, jelly, vinegar—all infused with the aromatic fl ower – fi ll the shop’s shelves and satiate the desires of people who prefer natural products. As busy as these artistic farmers are (they manage to sell out their products every year) they still make time to introduce new products.Karolina now collaborates with nearby Legend Distilling to create a line of bitters that invite home bartenders to take their mixing skills to a whole new level. In addition to the ubiquitous lavender, other fl avours include sumac-orange, rose hip and

sarsaparilla. The art gallery upstairs features many of the paintings Karolina produced for the brilliant book, Okanagan Slow Road. Forest Green Man Lavender Farm is now available to host small weddings, replete with lavender bridal bouquets, boutonnieres and corsages. Imagine the wedding photos!

WINE & CHOCOLATE PAIRING AT RED ROOSTER: YOU’LL CROW, TOO

et tactile this season at Red Rooster Winery with the hands-on and lip-smacking experience of the “Melt in your Mouth

– Chocolate & Wine Pairing.” Back by popular demand, this tasting experience at The Coop unlocks the sensual world of pairing wine with chocolate. Complimentary for wine club members and up to five guests, it’s only $5 per person and you’ll need to reserve ahead because space is limited. Chef Darin Paterson of Bogner’s of Penticton, who also creates the delectable farm-to-table cuisine offered at Red Rooster’s Pecking Room Patio and Grill, crafts the chocolate. You’ll see evidence of his international flair and love of diversity in his menu. A great place to linger and savour award-winning wines, food and vineyard vistas, the Pecking Room is open daily, May 24 to October 12, from noon to 5 pm. Ah, but back to the Chocolate & Wine Pairing: along with Chef Darin’s artisan chocolate, they will tease

your palate with three sumptuous wines. Start with the Reserve Gewürztraminer ($21.99) paired with citrus-infused white chocolate. Together it’s a symphony between the dry, slightly rich Gewürztraminer with notes of lychee, citrus and pink grapefruit and the citrus notes of the white chocolate. Dance on to the 2012 Reserve Malbec ($26.99) with dried cherry dark chocolate. Here let the deep brambleberry, rich spice, coffee and cocoa aspects of this wine released Fall 2014, comprised of Malbec grapes entirely from the on-site estate vineyard, mingle with the bitter notes of the dark chocolate. The tannins are tamed and you’ll want to play this melody of flavours on and on. For the crescendo, prepare yourself for the Reserve Riesling Icewine ($69.90) matched with a dark chocolate truffle. The harmony created between the smooth creaminess of the truffle and balanced icewine, which was harvested on New Year’s Eve and is Red Rooster’s first in 10 years, is

divine. Check out www.redroosterwinery.com for all of the details on how to sign up for the Chocolate & Wine Pairings and other events. Opt on to the email list to receive the most up-to-date information and learn all about the new releases as they hatch at Red Rooster. Join in on the fun on

social media and follow on Twitter @RedRoosterWine and www.facebook.com/RedRoosterWine because as Forrest Gump said “Life is like a box of chocolates – you never know what you’re going to get.” **Clip the ad below to use as a coupon for a free tasting!

Moraine Estate Winery has grown exponentially since its inception in

2012. In this short period of time, the wines have received great acclaim and awards including a

recent double win in Vancouver Magazine’s 2015 Wine Awards with their 2013 Riesling winning for Best Light White Wine and Pinot Noir in the Best Medium Red Wine category. Their luscious

Viognier also just won a Silver medal in Finger Lakes competition in New York. What a way to start the year! The high quality of wines being produced at Moraine are a combination of the unique terroir achieved in their sloping vineyards facing Okanagan Lake on the Naramata Bench. The soil conditions work in concert with the sunshine hours and refl ection off the lake, the rest of the glory and accolades are for winemaker Jacq Kemp, whose glowing history of winemaking in New Zealand has been translated into a new legacy of great BC wines.Proprietors Oleg and Svetlana Aristarkhov moved their family to wine country from Alberta and are enjoying their new life immensely. They are a family business, and the vineyards were lovingly named for their two daughters, Anastasia and Sophia and together they produce a beautiful range of varietals as well as the very popular and affordable Cliffhanger White and Cliffhanger Red blends as well as an icewine. Because of their ties

to Alberta, Oleg enjoys being able to promote his new wines at events in Calgary when he can.

Moraine Pink Mountain RoséThis pink beauty makes for the perfect choice to sip outside under the sun. A Malbec and Merlot blend, the nose will captivate you with its summer notes of fresh picked raspberries, strawberry jam with a twist of rhubarb. Very versatile for food pairings, it is an ideal match for barbecues in the backyard or picnics in the vineyard.

Wines. Everyday.

There’s a new kid on the Naramata Bench playground. Lock and Worth partners

Matthew Sherlock and Ross Hackworth (lock and worth—get it?) know a good vineyard when they see it, so when the old Poplar Grove vineyard came on the market four years ago, they jumped. Ross, who owns Nichol Vineyard, the northernmost Naramata Winery, and Matthew who works for Ross and is also a wine importer, make their mission clear—make very good wines (defi nition: wines they like to drink) but know they can’t please everyone. “We produced only 1200 cases in 2014, from a pretty awesome vintage, so we are never going to be a mass market wine,” Matt says. “It’s exciting for Ross to be able to push the boundaries in making our wines. Because we are small producers are vintages might be completely different.

Our customers are people who celebrate differences.”At the wine shop, which they share with Gitta Pedersen’s Poplar Grove Cheese, visitors will fi nd 2013 Cabernet Franc Square I, 2014 Merlot, 2014 Cabernet Franc Rosé, 2014 Sauvignon Blanc + Semillon and a very small quantity of 2014 Semillon. All wines are single vineyard productions. Most of the Lock and Worth wines are unfi ned and unfi ltered. For Ross, natural winemaking is a priority, so natural ferments with no added yeasts are used wherever possible. There is no questioning the commitment the owners have to quality, but if you are looking for middle market wine that is manipulated to be predictable the same despite variations in the growing season from year to year, it’s probably best to move on.

ith crisp features of fresh fruit such as peach, melon and green apple tingling on your tongue, Hillside

Winery’s Un-Oaked 2014 Pinot Gris delivers spring in your glass. Along with other releases, it is testament to the dividends of Hillside’s winemaking philosophy in using only the best grapes available and working with Mother Nature to guide the wine through natural phases rather than over manipulating it. The Gewürztraminer, too, heralds warmer weather with fragrances of honeysuckle, tropical fruits and ginger sure to enhance scallops, Spot Prawns and spicy dishes. Watch for the signature Muscat Ottonel to be released during the Spring Okanagan Wine Festival. Think picnics and Thai food with notes of citrus, apricot, spice and everything nice like a floral bouquet. Another spring release, the rosé is bright with notes of wild flowers, cherries and field berries on the palate – a perfect patio sipper. The Pinot Noir is an ambassador for the Okanagan’s quality in this varietal. It is juicy, with raspberry and strawberry and a lingering complexity of herbs and spice. Since 2006, the signature Mosaic is comprised entirely of Naramata Bench fruit and usually a Bordeaux blend of Merlot,

Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Absent from the Mosaic 2010 is the Cabernet Franc after winemaker Kathy Malone deemed that variety shy of Hillside’s standards that year. Such unwavering dedication to the bounty of the Naramata Bench is evident in the wines and the Bistro’s cuisine and Hillside’s staff. When asked about any changes to the core team, Lisa Baxter-Burke, sales and marketing manager, proudly pointed out that after working there seven years she is still the newbie. She smiles, “We are all excited by our only new addition – Chef Rob Cordonier and wife Melissa’s baby boy, Everett Robson Cordonier.” Spring brings renewal and with the releases in wine, there’s a new menu. As the Bistro opens for lunch and dinner, seven days per week, Chef Cordonier and Brent Pillon, Chef De Cuisine unveiled a refreshed slate of locally-inspired dishes. Each of the thoughtful farm-to-table plates are designed to complement Hillside’s superb wines and to assist you in your choice, the chefs have provided a suggested pairing for each. New Dad, Chef Cordonier has gone big for Father’s Day in offering a Rib-eye Dinner for $39.99. That new Mosaic would be a perfect fit.

THERE’S A HORSE IN THE SPEAKEASY

D espite the phenom-enally successful launch in 2014 of the

SKAHA Vineyards wines with native horse themed labels, customers visiting Kraze Legz Winery will be pleased to know that the Speakeasy theme in the wine shop is staying. “We know people visiting the tasting room love the Roaring Twenties labels and décor, so its hard to mess with it too much, but one should expect a horse or two in the Speakeasy this year,” says co-owner Gerry Thygesen, who runs the operation with his wife/moll (old gangster term), Sue.Things might seem a little more re-laxed at the winery than they were a year ago, though. There will be no new label this year, after the SKA-HA Vineyards label knocked it out of the park for Kraze Legz in 2014. So, what is new? A refreshed wine shop and tasting room, more good – make that very good – wines and it seems one thing new is one thing that is actually just getting older, the vineyard site in Kaleden is turn-

ing out to be outstanding, moreso as vines mature. “With each new vintage we’re seeing even more in-tensity in the fruit from the maturing vines, a refl ection of the unique ‘ter-roir’ here and this is what we believe differentiates our wines.”

2012 SKAHA Vineyards Cabernet FrancThis wine is already in short supply and won’t last long. “Delish Cab Franc,” writes food and wine writer Juliana Hayes (@VineLiving), “black cherry, cocoa, pepper, savoury spice and a hint of pepper.”

W hen Larry Ge-relus and Lin-da Pruegger

purchased their vine-yard in 1992 they never imagined the surprises they’d fi nd hidden among the vines lining the small valley, or hol-low, from which their winery draws its name. Half of their harvest was Vidal, a varietal looked down upon by those considered “knowledgeable” of such things. Perhaps it was curiosity, maybe char-ity, but Stag’s Hollow gave the grape a chance and today, winemaker Dwight Sick creates an off dry wine of com-plex texture named “Tragically Vidal”, challenging those who wrote the grape off.But between Rows 1 – 4 of the vine-yard lies the greatest of Stag Hollow’s surprises, a chance oversight which saw several Cabernet Sauvignon vines planted among Merlot. Dwight insists this Merlot hang on the vine longer al-

lowing both grapes to fully ripen before be-ing processed for the prestigious “Renais-sance Merlot”. For those enticed by the mystery of this smooth, complex, and fruitful Merlot; or those just curious to see these famous rows, you’ll want to partake in “Take a Walk on the Wineside” on Sat-

urday, May 2nd. This is a chance to explore the vineyard and taste with Dwight in the cellar, where whatever new joyful surprises that Stag’s Hollow has to offer are waiting to be tasted!

2014 Sauvignon BlancThe Vidal’s vineyard neighbour also likes to surprise. 20% barrel ferment-ed, this herbaceous wine is smoky to the nose when cold, but unveils tropical notes of guava as it warms, a palatable trick that caught everyone a little off guard.

P entâge Winery is open! After a short trial run last season, Julie Rennie and Paul Gardner

have reopened their wine shop and extraordinary winery experience to the public. Not new to the wine

world, this couple has been creating award-winning wines for a many years, and during those years they have been working on creating the rest of the experience and boy, is it worth the wait.

This highly anticipated opening is set to thrill visitors. Not only do they offer a spectacular viewing property, set high upon the cliffs over Skaha lake and award-winning wines, they also offer a new wine country experience like no other- a 5000 square foot natural wine cave. Carved into the granite on the mountainside by evolution and the glaciers, along with a bit of man-made ingenuity, it was a natural fi t. The enclosed space is naturally climate controlled and home to the barrel cellar and custom designed stainless steel tanks. By working with the rock contours the tanks provide maximum use of the space while reducing the fl oor footprint they occupy. The vineyard and winery buildings were carefully planted and built in concert with the natural environment surrounding them. Paul and Julie have thoughtfully transformed this challenging and unique 23-acre mountainside property with both creativity and a lot hard work since its

purchase in 1996 (vineyard planted in 1997).As for their beautiful wines, Paul and Julie explain, “We limit our annual production to approximately 5000 cases a year – this enables us the ability to create exceptional small lot releases and maintain our hands-on approach for quality control.” This philosophy and winemaking style have been awarded again and again – with multiple Platinum awards, Gold medals and two Lieutenant Governor’s Awards for Excellence in British Columbia Wines to name just a few. Open 1-5PM daily from May-October 15.

25 years ago, Wild Goose Vineyards was just one of three

farm-gate wineries in BC’s Okanagan Valley. Of these originals, Wild Goose is the only one that’s remained family-owned and operated. From vineyard to glass, it’s a testament to the Kruger family’s hard-work ethic, excellent business management and passion for all that they do.“We’re greatly honoured to have been in the business 25 years and very proud to see the growth of the whole BC wine industry. It’s come a long way,” says GM Roland Kruger. “When you look at all the wineries, tourism, and agri-tourism industries now, it’s remarkable what’s happened.”To celebrate their 25th anniversary, Wild Goose will be hosting a variety of events throughout the season, including a free Summer Kick-off Open House Thursday, June 4th, 12-5pm, and a series of celebrations on the 25th of each month starting in June. Visitors and neighbours are invited to stop by the winery to meet the winemakers, enjoy complimentary hors d’oeuvres, wine tasting, and live

entertainment.Wild Goose is wrapping up the year on Saturday, October 10th with their 2nd Annual Beale Street Festival. A tribute to the famous Memphis Blues Festival, their Beale Street Festival will feature a fabulous line-up of blues musicians, including Vancouver blues icon Sherman “Tank” Doucette, and Tennessee-style BBQ cuisine by Chef Sarren Wolfe at the winery’s on-site Smoke & Oak Bistro. Tickets are $37.50 and include a souvenir wine glass. For all info please visit www.wildgoosewinery.com.

T his year will be the third vin-tage of one the Similkameen’s ultimate summer wines – Eau

Vivre’s Cinq Blanc. The Cinq Blanc is always a blend of fi ve different white wines and for this year winemaker

Anthony Buchanan has tweaked the blend to make it even more refresh-ing. This year’s Cinq Blanc is 50% Pinot Gris, 23% Viognier, 21% Sau-vignon Blanc, 4% Riesling, and 3% Gewürztraminer making it more fo-

cused and a little less fl oral overall than last year’s vintage. The result is a wine with beautiful aromas of green apples and fresh herbs, a full fl avour, and a long crisp fi nish that will last un-til the crickets start chirping.16% of the 2014 Viognier was fer-mented with the skins in stainless steel tanks - just like a red wine - to give it a bigger body and deeper, fuller aromatics. An early sample of this wine yielded exquisite aromas of peaches, apricots, and fl owers. Made with 100% Similkameen fruit, only 200 cases of this wine were produced. Two intensely aromatic wines are also in the lineup again this year; the 2014 Gewürztraminer and the 2014 Ries-ling round out the whites at Eau Vivre this summer.

2014 GewürztraminerMade with estate-grown grapes only, this wine received a little skin contact like the Viognier did but only for a few hours. Huge aromas of lychee nuts

and rose petals dominate an early sample of this wine and is off-dry.

2014 Riesling100% Similkameen fruit and is a little sweeter at 21 g/L of residual sugar. This wine will be bold enough to han-dle almost anything spicy.

F orbidden Fruit Winery is cel-ebrating its 10th anniversary making award-winning wines

with 100% certifi ed organic fruit from its orchards and vineyard.Wines of Canada declared Forbid-den Fruit one of the top 15 wineries to watch out for in 2015. Winepress Northwest Platinum Judging award-ed them the sole Double-Platinum for a fruit wine (2013 Caught–Apri-cot Mistelle) and the only Double-Platinum for a BC red (2011 Earth Series Merlot), making it the fi rst Pacifi c Northwest winery to win top prizes in both fruit and grape wine categories at a single competition. Double Gold medals were awarded for 2013 Cherysh and 2012 Impear-fection.Savour Northwest awarded For-bidden Fruit Double Gold (2013 Pearsuasion), Gold (2010 Earth Se-ries Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve), and two Silvers (2013 Earth Series Sauvignon Blanc and 2013 Adam’s Apple).“We’re very pleased and thankful,” says co-proprietor Kim Brind’Amour. “We’ve raised a few eyebrows in the fruit wine world.”These awards are consistent with competition results throughout their winemaking history. To date, they’ve garnered 190+ awards, including

‘Best Fruit Wine in Canada’ (Cana-dian Wine Awards).“We’re paving the path for BC fruit wines. It’s time to highlight their quality!” exclaims Kim.

2013 Caught–Apricot Mistelle $26.95Co-proprietor Steve Venables calls his Double Platinum dessert wine “the nectar of the Goddesses.” Its heaven-kissed aromas and fl avours are well deserving of mortal and im-mortal adulation alike.

2013 Pearsuasion $18.95 This Double Gold winner features huge aromatics and fl avours of spice and Asian pear. Amazing with seared scallops or green salad gar-nished with pear, roasted walnuts and blue cheese.

T here are many reasons to make a trip to Cawston to visit Seven Stones Winery this season,

including special events and a brand new wine shop! The existing wine shop was renovated in the spring and greatly expanded with a larger tasting bar and more retail space. While the previous bar could only accommodate eight people, the new horseshoe shaped bar is able to host 20 people with lots of room left over to browse. The atmosphere is now bright and open without losing the cozy ambiance of the old wine shop. The new vaulted ceiling over the bar perfectly mimics

the shape of the ceiling in the wine caves. Colin Wilson, who designed and built the caves, also designed the new wine shop and made sure to keep that key feature consistent. The new wine shop also has a new door on the west side of the building to access the deck with an unobstructed view of the Similkameen Valley. This will very likely become one of the most photographed winery locations in the Similkameen. This year’s ‘Sip Sip Syrah’ tasting event at Seven Stones will be featuring a vertical of many different vintages of their sought-after Syrah. “There will be at least seven for

sure,” says owner George Hanson with a smile. Included in the tasting will be the new 2013 Syrah, the very fi rst vintage produced entirely in the caves. ‘Sip Sip Syrah’ takes place on May 9th from 2-4pm in the

wine caves. Tickets are $50 and are available by phone from the winery directly. Space is extremely limited so do not hesitate to purchase your tickets right away.

A fter the dust settles, the new state-of-

the-art wine shop will be able to welcome customers to share and experience premium, handcrafted, Bordeaux-style wines. Vineyard tours focusing on quality viticulture with biodynamic and organic practices are the big features. Windows looking into the production area will be a part of the experience, especially this coming fall when all of the production will be handled in this new facility. The grand opening is planned for the May long weekend. Solstices are important for biodynamic viticulture and Clos du Soleil often chooses those dates to release wines. This year’s summer solstice will feature some of the 2013 vintage reds. “The reds are fantastic in quality this vintage,” says Michael Clark, Clos du Soleil’s winemaker and managing director. There is also

a new Grower’s Series Red made from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from a vineyard farther south in the Similkameen Valley. The Grower’s Series normally focuses on single varieties from exceptional vineyard locations so it is indeed a treat to have a

blend included in this series.   Clos du Soleil has been getting a lot of attention for their blends in the off-season. In March, their 2012 Celestiale, a blend of all fi ve Bordeaux grape varieties, won the Top Red Blend at the Northern Lands Wine Festival in Edmonton. As well, in February they personally poured Capella, the blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, in London, England at the grand re-opening of Canada House attended by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

F airview Cellars is expanding, but not in the normal way. Owner Bill Eggert is wants to

make sure his wines show their best in the wine shop and has been tak-ing steps to age the wine prior to releasing them. Of course, fans of Fairview’s wines already know that they have an amazing potential for aging. Bill has been demonstrating this in his wine shop over the past couple of years by featuring tast-ings of special back vintages. Not every winery can do this, but Fair-view can. Extra aging means extra storage space and that is what Bill has been

hard at work doing over the winter. Backfi lling has begun on the new underground wine cellar which is perfect for storing wines until they are ready for release. The Bear 2012 will be the fi rst vintage partially held back about six months. Subsequent vintages of reds will be held back a little longer each year until all of the reds are more matured at release. New this year is a beautiful Char-donnay, another white to the portfo-lio along with the Sauvignon Blanc. Dressed up in a Burgundy bottle like the Crooked Post Pinot Noir, it is a full-bodied, elegant white.

“A TOUCH OF CLASS” AT BLACK HILLS ESTATE WINERYhe Wine Experience Centre at Black Hills Estate Winery is setting new standards in tastings in the Okanagan and TripAdvisor reviews are brimming with praise. Posts

rave with comments such as it’s “A touch of class”, “Magic”, “Outstanding”, “a weekend to remember”, “Wonderful atmosphere, great taste and knowledgeable staff” and the love continues with scores of individual reviewers. What’s attracting such accolades? President Glenn Fawcett explains that “very special sit-down tasting experiences” have been created. “Our ‘Wine Evangelists’ (the tasting room wine educators) guide our guests through an informative and entertaining flight of wines, each served in the appropriate Riedel glass,” he adds. “As our visitors sit comfortably, the wine evangelist shares insight into our terroir, winemaking process and

history.” The $10 Introductory Tasting samples current releases Alibi, Chardonnay and Syrah. The $20 Portfolio Tasting Experience adds Viognier, Carmenere and Nota Bene to feature all six current releases from the highly acclaimed Black Hills labels. To reserve and get details on all tasting options, email [email protected] or see www.blackhillswinery.com Along with that primary desire to provide exceptional tastings to showcase the wines, at Black Hills you’ll find attention to detail everywhere. From its picturesque setting on Black Sage Road, the architectural gem that is the Wine Experience Centre, to its funky water feature, each element is designed to wow with the wines. Circle your calendar and reserve your place for the 8th Annual Nota Bene Release Party, 4:30 to 7:30 pm, June 20th ($159), an amazing event. Also, be sure to check out the ‘Midsummer’s Night Dream’

featuring the Aqualillies, 6 to 10 pm, August 8th ($99.95). It’s truly living the Okanagan dream to sip exquisite wine and nibble appetizers outside as you watch the spectacle.

2013 Nota BeneGrab it while you can, the 2013 Note Bene is the 15th vintage of this flagship wine and as Steve Carberry, winegrower says, “one of the best years seen for flavour profile, balanced ripeness and quality.” Show it respect with proper decanting and fitting glassware to enjoy the symphony of scents, flavours and feel. There’s rich dark berries and cherries at the beginning with hints of vanilla-dipped cigars and earthiness. Throughout the juiciness offers waves of floral tones and light tannins that’ll have you craving more and an epic steak to accompany it.

A nother spring is upon us and it has brought another round of medals for the

wines of Gehringer Brothers Estate Winery. The Great Northwest Wine Competition is held annually at the historic Columbia Gorge Hotel in Hood River, Oregon. This year it drew over 1200 entries from Washington, Oregon, Idaho and British Columbia. The Gehringer Brothers 2014 Dry Rock Sauvignon Blanc brought home the title of Best White Wine. This wine is a delicate, pale gold in the glass, with a nose that is classic Sauvignon Blanc; sharp citrus and gooseberry. In the mouth, this wine has a terrifically firm structure with bright acidity. Fresh lemon juice and pink grapefruit zest with a mineral note are delightful components and the finish that disappears to leave behind a clean mouthfeel; enlivening. If you’re a fan of the Classic Riesling, keep your eyes open. The winery has started bottling it in an Alsatian bottle rather than the standard Bordeaux bottle. Over several decades, Walter and his brother Gordon have been honing

their craft, making wines of excellent quality year after year, winning award after award. Their wines (and their prices) will amaze you.

2014 Classic Riesling Awarded both a Gold medal and the Best of Class distinction by the judges. A delicately coloured golden wine in the glass, the nose is filled with fresh, green apples, honey and beeswax. The palate has definite structural integrity with a bright level of acidity. Granny Smith apple, Meyer lemon and beeswax all adorn a mineral spine. The finish is crisp and clean and leaves one salivating for more. ~ Courtney Fossett

W i n e m a k e r Amber Pratt is thrilled with

the way everything is shaping up at C.C. Jentsch Cellars this season. The new vintages are soon to be bottled and among those is a brand new white wine ideal for the hot Okanagan summer.“The Quest” is one of those perfect summer wines. A blend of stainless steel-fermented Chardonnay, Viognier, and Gewürztraminer, this wine is “lushly fruity,” says Amber. “Lots of golden pineapple, banana, and melon flavours.” This one will be perfect for summer picnics and lounging by the water, both of which can be done in C.C. Jentsch’s new picnic area. Mere steps from the parking lot, this picnic spot is across a new footbridge over Testalinda Creek. Relax in the shade with a picnic and then take a stroll through the vineyards to another old

stone footbridge higher up the creek. Don’t forget to bring your camera with you!The new 2014 rosé named “The Dance” is Merlot-dominant blend. “It’s going to have an even more refreshing quality to it,” says Amber. The 2014 Small Lot Chardonnay will be bottled in the late spring and available when it is ready. This is a small

batch of Chardonnay fermented and aged in barrels that is estimated to produce only about 100 cases of standard bottles and 100 Jeroboams (spectacular 3 litre bottles).  A similarly small lot of 2013 Malbec, which only amounted to around 50 cases, will be available around the same time. These wines won’t last long so be sure to ask for them soon. The wine shop will be open 10am - 6pm daily throughout the summer.

The winery’s chefs work with the farmers at Le Petit Clos to determine what should be planted for the upcoming season, and the resulting harvest includes a bounty of amazing garlic, beans, cucumbers, heirloom tomatoes, baby eggplant, potatoes, squash, peaches, apricots, currants, and a wide variety of fresh herbs.Be one of the first to try wine country’s new spring releases with a getaway to Burrowing Owl Winery’s Guest House. The “Mid-Week Blossom Getaway” is available Monday to Wednesday from May 1st to 28th and is only $158.50

per person based on double occupancy. Included in the deal is one night’s luxury accommodation, a three-course dinner in the winery’s onsite Sonora Room Restaurant, and a wine country breakfast. Still undecided? Allow us to whet your taste buds with winemaker notes on one of the new Burrowing Owl releases:

2014 Burrowing Owl Pinot Gris - $20.00 On the nose there are lovely, ripe expressions of pear, honeydew melon, and nectarines, with white flower, and cardamom. The palate has a mouth-filling richness with layers of orchard fruits, cantaloupe and yellow plum, balanced by hints of mandarin rind and a chalky minerality. This Pinot Gris is approachable and smooth, and ends with a nice, long finish. Try with grilled halibut accompanied by citrus and melon salsa.

O liver Twist Estate Winery, lo-cated, not surprisingly, in Oli-ver, is becoming something of

a destination winery, as owners Gina and Trevor Mitchell host more and more events each year. And they get more and more popular each year. The season kicks off on May 3rd with a Pick Up Party. “Where were you in ’52,” Gina asks. “Come in and have a glass of wine on our licensed patio, enjoy live oldies entertainment, snack on deli delights and pick your wines for summer entertaining.” Also in May, Oliver Twist will be participating in the Half Corked Marathon, Pig Out and Bacchanalia.Last years Show, Shine…and Wine event, Trevor’s favourite, was a huge success. “We had to use our neighbour’s parking lot too—luckily, we get along well!” he says. Mark June 13th on your calendar for this year’s car show and—are you ready for this?—the new label reveal. Live ‘60’s music and MC Okanagan Wolfman will be featured along with a pin-up girl contest! Of course, Oliver Twist is really all about the wine, and new releases, all

featuring the new bright and cheery label, await visitors.

2014 Pinot GrisApple, floral and pear on the nose, with strawberries and cream, Asian pear and lingering caramelized apple flavours.

2012 Merlot “Our juicy little secret,” Gina says. “This select Merlot lures you in with the tantalizing aroma of maraschino cherry and strawberries before revealing luscious bursts of black cherries, dark berries, pineapple and sweet tropical oak.”

G uests to the popular Oliver winery were

thrilled with the gorgeous renovations of their tasting room last year. It’s ample design and U-shaped bar made it easy to welcome the waves of wine lovers that flow into their wine shop annually. This season, the Toor family decided to embark on exterior improvements by increasing and paving the parking area. The new, easy-access driveway and parking lot can accommodate up to 25 vehicles and features a turnaround for buses and larger vehicles. The arid terroir that make for Desert Hills’ optimum grape growing conditions didn’t help the dust from their gravel driveway, so they’ve paved the whole thing. “To save the interior, we had to work on the exterior!” laughs proprietor Randy Toor. These improvements were an essential step to their next big development: the opening of Desert Hills’ first-ever food operation. Throughout the summer and fall, guests will be able to

enjoy fine Indian cuisine from their on-site food truck: The Feisty Cactus Bistro.Every April, the winery sends out the first shipments to their wine club members. “It takes about three weeks to fulfill all those orders,” explains Randy. The popularity of

Desert Hills’ wine club lies in the ease, selection, first dibs on new releases and exclusive access to events and small lot vintages, like the newest addition of Petit Verdot. This June, Desert Hills’ annual release party for wine club members features Syrah 2010, Mirage 2010 and Petit Verdot 2012. Randy is particularly proud of the latter, saying, “It blew me away.”If you aren’t a Desert Hills wine club member yet, no worries. Interested parties can sign-up anytime. T inhorn Creek Vineyards has good news to share. The Gold-en Mile sub-appellation—the

fi rst new sub-appellation in the Okan-agan Valley—has been approved and will now appear on the labels of wines from 11 wineries in The Golden Mile, including Tinhorn Creek. To celebrate this, as well as the Spring Wine Festival, Tinhorn is releasing its new wines: Pinot Gris 2014, Oldfi eld Series Rosé 2014 and Gewürztramin-er 2014.Tinhorn Creek will be heralding late spring and summer with a plethora of events. J ust as they had hoped, the mineral-rich, sloping,

gravelly site of their vineyard is already having a noticeable impact on their wine, River Stone Estate Winery co-owners Ted and Lorraine Kane agree.“Our wines have a sense of place that comes from this dusty, chalky, earthy, mineral soil,” Ted says. On a March Saturday after a two-day bottling marathon (that morphed into a team-building event by their sales rep from Lifford Wine and Spirits) Ted and Lorraine were all smiles—1500 cases of wine safely in the bottle and a new season on the horizon. In the wine shop this month customers will fi nd new vintages of Gewürztraminer and Sauvignon Blanc with only 60 cases each from what Ted describes as a great harvest. “I’m really happy with the wines, and I have been experimenting with different yeasts that help bring out the fl avours produced by our vines.” Expect a

more tropical, off-dry Splash, with notes of passion fruit and lychee, and a deep-coloured Malbec Rosé that has a hint of residual sugar to balance the tannins. After a successful jump into the local farmers market scene last year, River Stone will continue to have a personal presence at markets

throughout the area, which Ted and Lorraine see as a great opportunity to introduce their wines to a new audience. Fans of the Oliver winery will be eagerly anticipating the release later in the year of reds like Cabernet Franc and Stones Throw, a premium Bordeaux blend that includes Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. As the winery’s reputation continues to grow, Ted promises to continue to focus on high quality and great value, a magical combination for wine lovers.

FAMILY STYLE AT ADEGA ESTATE WINERY

I t’s all in the family at Adega Estate Winery and Racyne Farinha, tasting room manager,

is proud to be taking on the responsibility for the customer experience. Appropriately, Father’s Day this June will see the release of two very special wines, one named after the full version of her father’s fi rst name “Alfredo” which is a special reserve selection of Merlot. Her uncle Alex Nunes’ eponymous reserve wine “Alexandrino” is a similarly special selection of Syrah. Both wines will be available for the fi rst time at their Customer Appreciation Day that is held annually on Father’s Day. There were only about 100 cases produced of each of these special wines so they will likely not be around long. Racyne’s grandparents also have their names on some special and unique wines. A beautifully bright and refreshing summer

wine was named to honour her grandmother, Felicidade. A unique red blend is named in honour of her grandfather Manuel, who originally purchased the land in 1966 where her father Fred and his sister Maria grew up. This is the same land where the Adega Estate Winery is now located. The 2012 reds will be released in the early spring. These include the single variety Malbec, Syrah, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc along with the Quarteto Tinto, a Bordeaux-style blend. These wines can be tasted at the bar or purchased by the glass to enjoy on their partially shaded patio with a stunning southwest view over Osoyoos and the valley. And there is more than just wine to enjoy-a deli cooler offers an assortment of meats and cheeses to purchase to make the occasion complete.
