Camp History . 5

DEVELOPMENT CAMP HISTORY & GOALS

The Boston Bruins Development Camp is currently in its third year of operation, having launched the fi rst installment of the weeklong training session in 2007. The camp provides coaches and players with the opportunity to interact with one another both on and off the ice in advance of the NHL training camp in September.

The camp itself differs from normal training camp, which takes place at the end of the summer. The focus here is on rookies and prospects and their overall development, in addition to giving them a taste of what a NHL-style training regimen is all about.

Players take part in a series of practices, drills, exercises and scrimmages over the course of the week in hopes of getting them acclimated to our coaching philosophies and expectations. On-ice activities will emphasize skill development as well as measuring agility, speed, hand-eye coordination, game sense and shooting. Off the ice, the players work with our trainers not only to assess potential strengths and weaknesses, but most importantly, they will be learning how to streamline their training programs and train more effi ciently.

Additionally, the players are given a chance to interact with potential future teammates and create friendships that go beyond the locker room. In previ-ous development camps, prospects have enjoyed numerous adventures into the city of Boston including a journey on the famous Duck Tours, a tour of TD Banknorth Garden and trips to Fenway Park for a Red Sox game. It is a chance for each player to take in all that the city has to offer while training and enhanc-ing team building skills in a more relaxed environment than at an NHL training camp in the fall.

In addition, each year development camp attendees have been part of efforts that introduced them to the Bruins tradition of giving back to the commu-nity, such as visits to hospitals, work at the Greater Boston Food Bank and other charitable efforts. This year’s prospects will host a Youth Hockey Day on Friday, July 10 at the Cronin Skating Rink in Revere in partnership with FMC Ice Sports. Kids that participate in the Bruins FUNdamentals program will play cross-ice games with the Bruins rookies for an hour followed by a 60-minute Squirt vs. Pee Wee scrimmage featuring Bruins rookie participation as they provide hockey instruction. Children on the Squirt and Pee Wee teams will be selected through a contest on BostonBruins.com.

Previous Boston Bruins development camps have included many young names that may have been relatively unknown at the time but have grown into popular and proven members of the Bruins roster. Milan Lucic, David Krejci, Matt Hunwick, Blake Wheeler, Byron Bitz, Vladimir Sobotka and Tuukka Rask are all players who participated in prior development camps who have gone on to see signifi cant ice time with Boston over the past two seasons. This year’s camp will certainly have many new faces to look out for, including those in the draft class of 2009, as well as returning players like 2007 fi rst-round draft selection Zach Hamill and 2008 fi rst-rounder Joe Colborne.

Once again, former Bruin and current Director of Hockey Operations and Player Development, Don Sweeney will oversee the events of the camp. Boston Bruins Goaltending Coach Bob Essensa, Providence Bruins Head Coach Rob Murray and Providence Bruins Assistant Coach Bruce Cassidy will control the on-ice practices, while Boston Bruins Strength and Conditioning Coach John Whitesides will oversee the off-ice action.

Among other activities, development camp prospects enjoyed a team dinner following a tour of TD Banknorth Garden in 2008:

Jamie Arniel & Maxime Sauve Blake Wheeler & Jeff LoVecchio Joe Colborne & Mark Goggin

DON SWEENEY

Director of Hockey Operations & Player Development, Boston Bruins

Don Sweeney is in his fourth season in the Bruins front offi ce, having been named as the team’s Director of Player Development in June, 2006. He added the position of Director of Hockey Operations to his portfolio on July 14, 2007. In his dual positions, he oversees the devel-opment of the team’s drafted prospects at the AHL, junior hockey, college and European levels in addition to having a supervisory role in the day-to-day operations of the hockey department.

Sweeney conceived and ran the team’s fi rst off-season Development Camp in July, 2007 involving 24 of the team’s top prospects and it has now become an annual event with this year’s Camp the third such event.

Drafted by the Bruins as their eighth pick, 166th overall, in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft, he went on to play four seasons of college hockey at Harvard University. He earned both NCAA East All-American and ECAC First Team All-Star honors with the Crimson and played in the 1986 NCAA Finals before graduating with a degree in Economics.

The defenseman played 16 seasons in the National Hockey League, including 15 with the Bruins. He is one of just two defensemen and four players in team history to play over 1,000 games in a Boston uniform and he still ranks third on the team’s all-time games played list. He also ranks in the top ten of the club’s all-time lists in career goals, assists and points by a defenseman. He played his fi nal NHL season with the Dallas Stars in 2003-04.

Sweeney and his wife Christine have twin sons, Jarrod and Tyler.

ROB MURRAY

Head Coach, Providence Bruins

Rob Murray will enter his second season as the Head Coach of Boston’s American Hockey League affi liate in Providence, as he was named as the ninth coach in Providence history on August 21, 2008. In his fi rst season at the P-Bruins helm, he led the team to a second-overall regular season standing in the AHL’s Atlantic Division with a 43-29-2-6 record, and then to playoff series victories over Portland and Worcester before they bowed in the Conference Finals to eventual Calder Cup champion Hershey.

Murray came to his current position following fi ve seasons as assistant coach for the AHL Bruins and since joining the organization in 2003, he has worked closely with Boston’s coaching staff during training camps. This is his third straight year at the club’s prospect develop-ment camp.

Murray joined the coaching ranks following a 16-year playing career at the NHL, AHL and IHL levels. He was drafted by the Washington Capitals in the third round of the 1985 NHL Entry Draft and turned pro following a three-year career with the OHL’s Peterborough Petes. He played 107 career NHL games with Washington, Winnipeg and Phoenix, but spent the bulk of his pro career at the AHL level. He played 1,018 career AHL games, ranking sixth all-time in American League history and he still ranks second overall in AHL history with 2,940 penalty min-utes. He also served as captain for four different AHL clubs - Moncton, Springfi eld, Hamilton and Philadelphia.

He played the majority of his AHL career in Springfi eld and he remains the Falcons’ career leader in games, assists and penalty minutes and ranks second in that team’s annals in points and fourth all-time in goals. His number 23 was retired by the Falcons in 2007, as he joined Bruins Hallof-Famer Eddie Shore as just the second player in that team’s history to be so honored.

BRUCE CASSIDY

Assistant Coach, Providence Bruins

Bruce Cassidy will enter his second season as an Assistant Coach for the Providence Bruins in 2009-2010, as he was named to the post on September 12, 2009 and helped Boston’s American Hockey League affi liate to a 43-29-2-6 record and a berth in the AHL’s Conference Finals.

Cassidy came to Providence with 11 years of coaching experience at the NHL, AHL, IHL, ECHL and OHL levels. His coaching resume is highlighted by a 107-game stint as the head coach of the NHL’s Washington Capitals, where he accumulated a 47-45-9-6 record from 2002-2004. He also served as an assistant coach in the NHL with Chicago from 2004-2006.

A native of Ottawa, Ontario, Cassidy came to Providence after serving as head coach of the Kingston Frontenacs of the OHL. He has also served as head coach in Grand Rapids (AHL & IHL), Indianapolis (IHL), and in the ECHL with both Jacksonville and Trenton.

Cassidy was drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in the fi rst round (18th overall) of the 1983 NHL Entry Draft. He went on to enjoy a 13-year professional career, including 36 career NHL games with Chicago. He played most of his pro career at the AHL and IHL levels in North America in addition to three seasons in Europe.
