Congratulations to all of our Brilliant Bobcat Brainiacs who had an impressive showing in their fi rst Scholastic Challenge competition. The BOCES-sponsored event was held on Saturday, February 2, at Portville Central School with a record 42 teams squaring off in separate junior and senior divisions. Scholastic Challenge is a fast-paced, double elimination tournament in which schools compete against one another by demonstrating their knowledge of academic trivia. We had 19 Brilliant Bobcats from grades 6-12 compete in this year’s competition. The advisors of the team, Mrs. Cashimere and Mrs. Jedrosko, would like to thank our awesome bus driver, Mr. Fenner, as well as all of the parents that allowed their children to be a part of this amazing academic opportunity. Our Bobcats did an outstanding job and they should be VERY proud of themselves. We are looking forward to participating in another fun-fi lled Scholastic Challenge next year!

Hello everyone. As I write this I will have completed my fourth week as Superintendent of Hinsdale CSD. My main

goal for the 2012-2013 school-year is to continue to learn the culture at Hinsdale CSD. This will be accomplished

by visiting everyone’s classroom/work spaces, meeting with all constituents

of Hinsdale, attending extra-curricular events and being visible/accessible

on a regular basis. Key to this will be routinely “sharing out” of the infor-

mation gathered through conversations/meetings/observations.

To date, I have met with and observed in their work environment the teach-

ers, support staff, students and administration. I have also met and talked

with the community as much as possible, at the school, or extra-curricular

activities. During these meetings, I asked the following questions:

What is going well?

Areas for improvement or focus?

Possible directions for the future?

Overall, I am very impressed with the quality, dedication and passion of everyone I have encountered at Hinsdale

CSD. In addition, I feel very welcome here, as part of the family.

By listening and writing down what I hear, I am learning very quickly the history, culture and needs of Hinsdale

CSD. In order to complete this process, however, I need to meet with more community members. Therefore, I

am extending an invitation to “Have coffee with the Superintendent” on Wednesday, March 27, 2013 from

5:30-6:30 p.m. in the High School Library. Please refer to the above questions. I will facilitate a meeting, listen,

compile a list of responses, and report back to all community members in the next district newsletter. If successful,

I will build this event into my schedule and we will meet on a regular basis.

Budget Vote, Board Election & Absentee Ballots

Kellogg Wins Local Spelling BeeCongratulations to the top fi nishers in

the local annual spelling bee at Hinsdale Central School on Friday, January 4, 2013. The fi nalists in the local qualifi er for the 2013 Scripps National Spelling Bee were: fi rst place - Gabe Kellogg, second place - To-bias Nelson, and third place -Jordan Sands. The Buffalo News has sponsored the event across Western New York since 1927. Gabe Kellogg and other school champions across Western New York went on to take a county level written spelling test on Wednesday, February 6. All champions from schools registered in the 2013 Buffalo News Spell-ing Bee will receive a gift from The News, with a certifi cate of merit for each school runner-up. The top 20 fi nishers in WNY will compete in the oral fi nals on March 10, 1:30 pm, in the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society Auditorium. The winner of that bee will travel to Washington D.C. on an all expense paid trip for the National Finals in May.

Congratulations also to our class-room spelling bee winners listed BELOW. Those in grades 6-8 went on to compete in the school spelling bee on January 4. The Grade 4 classroom spelling was actually held in January after they were able to see how a spelling bee works.

Vote & Election-May 21, 2013

The budget vote and election will be held Tuesday, May 21, 2013 from noon until 8 p.m. at the school. There is one seat open for election to the Board of Education. The seat is presently held by Jennifer Howell and carries a five-year term. Petitions require 25 signatures, and must be turned in to the district office by 4 p.m. on Monday, April 22, 2013. Petitions may be obtained from the district office during school hours.

To be qualified, board candidates: Must be able to read and write Must be a qualified district voter Must not be judged to be incompetent Must be and have been a resident of the district for a continuous and uninterrupted period of at least one year immediately before the election May not have been removed from any school district office within the preceding yearMay not reside with another member of the same school board as a member of the family May not be a current employee of the school district May not simultaneously hold another incompatible office

Pre-Kindergarten registration/screening for Hinsdale Central School is set for Wednesday, April 10 and Thursday, April 11. Your child must be four years old on or before December 1, 2013 in order to be eligible to attend Pre-Kindergarten this coming school year. Parents of eligible children are asked to call Judy Shaw at 716-557-2227, ext. 412 in order to request a registration packet and to set up a date and time for the screening. On the day of your appointment, please come with the following:

Read Across America Begins March 4Hinsdale Elementary will celebrate

Read Across America honoring Dr. Seuss, the beloved author, the week

of March 4. The week be-gins with a daily theme around one of Dr. Seuss’

books. Mon-day is Silly Sock Day in honor of The

F o o t B o o k , and students are invited to wear

their silliest

socks. Tuesday is Thing 1 and Thing 2 Day, from The Cat in the Hat, and students are invited to dress as a twin with a friend. Wednesday is Wacky Wednesday where students will dress their wackiest! Thursday will be career day in honor of Oh, The Places You’ll Go, with students dressing like the career they want to pursue. Friday is Red, White, and Black Day and classes will visit “Seussville” in the upper gym where Seuss activities will be set-up. The end of the day brings classes together to buddy- read in the upper gym. Mark your calendar and look for your silliest socks!

Kinship Caregiver ProgramAre you a relative – for example, a grandparent – who is raising a child who has been separated from his or her biological parents?

The Catholic Charities Kinship Care-giver program may be able to help. This program provides case management assistance for caregivers, including help with the following:

How to meet the needs of the child (emotional and behavioral concerns)

Parenting strategies Financial demands Legal concerns and questions Finding affordable, accessible

health care and health care coverage Housing needs Affordable/reliable child care Negotiating your new relation-

ship with the child and with the child’s parent(s)

Questions and concerns regard-ing the child’s education

In order to be eligible, children must be TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) eligible or eligible for public cash assistance. Children living with a non-parent caregiver who is a blood relative are eligible to receive a “child-only” TANF grant, regardless of the caregiver’s income.

The children don’t have to be in court-ordered legal arrangements such as guardianship or kinship foster care. Arrangements made with the child’s parents are acceptable for this program.

New York State ELA testing begins for students in grades 3-8 on Tuesday, April 16. To assist the readiness of our students we will be providing breakfast to students in grades 3-8 in their classroom beginning on March 20 and extending through April 27. Notices will be coming home to parents with more breakfast information. Testing continues the following week, Wednesday, April 24 with New York State Math testing for grades 3-8.

Please make sure your children have a good night’s sleep before each testing date. Please do not schedule medical/ dental or other appointments on the testing dates.

Testing statistics note that children score higher when they take their exams on the same day as their classmates.

Transportation Requests Due April 1Request for transportation of non-public school children should be submitted to the

Hinsdale Central School District offi ce prior to April 1, 2013. Regulations require the district to transport children to non-public schools when a student resides within 15 miles of the non-public school. The 15 miles is measured from the home of the stu-dent to the non-public school. The district has the option of setting up pick-up points and the parents would be required to bring their child to the pick-up point. Normally the pick-up point is the school district.

Parker Bohn III, two-time PBA Bowler of the Year, visited with HCS bowlers at Central Lanes in Salamanca on Saturday, December 15, 2012. Bohn has 32 career PBA titles and 89 career 300 games to his credit.

HCS Bowling Coach Sandy Peterson said, “What an experience this was for the bowlers and myself! The kids were able to bowl two games, as Parker walked lane

to lane giving out pointers and autographs. Then, some bowlers were chosen to bowl a roll-off against Parker and Paul Geiger. Four of my bowlers were included for this -- Blake Geiger, Danielle Johnson, Chris Og-den, and Elijah Kitchen (from Franklinville).

Parker also did a Q & A session. Afterwards, he even performed some of his trick shots, some of which have been shown on ESPN. Pretty amazing! I know this is something we will remember forever!”
