2 Welcome
WelcomeBBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Concerts have been a weekly staple in the events calendar at LSO St Luke’s since doors opened at the Centre nearly ten years ago, and building on from last year’s truly ambitious series, here is yet another compelling season of concerts featuring some of the world’s most exciting artists. The focal point of the year falls on the tenth anniversary of LSO St Luke’s in March 2013, which will feature a BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert residency, broadcasting live from this intimate venue on consecutive weekdays.
BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Concerts are just part of the LSO’s commitment to exploring chamber music, and the 2012/13 season gives unique opportunities to hear non-orchestral ensembles perform at both the Barbican and LSO St Luke’s. The UBS Soundscapes: Eclectica series is often programmed to link in to the LSO’s main season at the Barbican, so in this guide are some of those highlights too, alongside other chamber events.
Described as an ‘outstanding artist’ by the Daily Telegraph, pianist Imogen Cooperkicks off the BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert season with Imogen Cooper and Friends. She will be joined by her musical associates cellist Adrian Brendel and violinist Henning Kraggerud, as well as performing two solo recitals.
Interweaving Imogen’s autumn series is Schumann Song Cycles which includesan impressive roll-call of singers, some of whom are long-standing friends of the LSO. John Mark Ainsley, Roderick Williams, Ailish Tynan and superstar mezzo-soprano Sarah Connolly perform alongside an equally impressive list of pianists.
The new year brings a residency with the Vienna Piano Trio, a group whohave featured as Gramophone Editor’s Choice on several occasions, and are previous winners of the Echo-Klassik award for their recordings. Beethoven and Schubert form the backbone of this series.

Hot on the heels of that is the much-anticipated LSO St Luke’s Tenth Birthday Festival – twelve days of celebrations with guests including Nicholas Angelich, the Wihan Quartet and Nash Ensemble.
Tying in with LSO concerts at the Barbican focusing on Britten, the last BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Concerts centre on Bach, Britten and Shostakovich. Joanna MacGregor, Daniel Müller-Schott, the Brodsky Quartet and viola sensation Lawrence Power round off the season.
Over at the Barbican, don’t miss the chance to hear the LSO String Orchestraled and directed by LSO Leader Roman Simovic and a one-off recital with Leonidas Kavakos who is the focus of this year’s UBS Soundscapes: LSO Artist Portrait.
Join us for this thrilling season either in person at LSO St Luke’s and the Barbican, or listen in on BBC Radio 3.
Lunch at the LSO St Luke’s Café
Why not make an afternoon of it and join us for lunch downstairs in the LSO St Luke’s café? We serve lunch both before and after the Lunchtime Concerts and doors open at 12 noon.
Alongside a full hot food menu, there are sandwiches and cake for those wanting a light bite, not to mention a wide variety of teas, filter coffee and a fully stocked bar.

I’ve chosen a programme which gives me a chance to revisit the Kernerlieder, a cycle I worked intensively on a couple of years ago. It’s less sung than the others, perhaps because of the demands it makes on the performers! I’m very much looking forward to revisiting the work and searching for something new to bring to it.

We fell in love with this wonderful venue from the first moment on. This residency finally gives us the chance to present our new violinist Bogdan Božovic, born in Belgrade in 1985. We are excited to have been given the chance to present four concerts at LSO St Luke’s next March and embark on a return to Vienna’s probably greatest native composer – Franz Schubert.

People have an idea of classical music as pure and untouchable, but if you get closer to it you realise composers have always begged, borrowed and stolen from elsewhere. I’ve always been open to influences, even from rock and pop music, which is a bit of a can of worms for some people. But as an artist, if you can’t open a can of worms, what can you do?
