Ownership, finance and control

• The British Broadcasting Corporation, known as the BBC, is the world's largest broadcasting organisation, founded in 1922 as the British Broadcasting Company. Originally a radio broadcaster, the corporation began television broadcasts in 1932 and now operates ten UK television channels including the oldest and most watched, BBC One. The BBC also operates 58 radio stations, including the most popular station in the UK, BBC Radio 2, and has an online presence through BBC Online.

• Funding comes from the TV licence that all UK TV owners have to purchase. As of 2010, this costs £145.50 for colour and £49.00 for black and white. The licence is required to receive any television transmission, whether it is received via terrestrial, satellite, cable, or the Internet.

• Total levies from the licence fee were £3.45 billion in 2009–collection and enforcement of the licence fee is the responsibility of the BBC in its role as TV Licensing Authority.

• Radio 1 has a service budget to work with at an estimated £30 million a year
