Nationally – Started in 1904, by a New York City court clerk named Ernest Coulter.
Locally – Incorporated in 1973. Since our inception, we have served over 20,000 youth

Mentor youth from ages 7 to 18 years old, through our Community-Based or
Site-Based program.

National research shows that children who were matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister for a minimum of 18 months were:
• 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs • 27% less likely to begin using alcohol• 52% less likely to skip school • 37% less likely to skip a class • more confident of their performance in schoolwork • one-third less likely to hit someone • getting along better with their families

What does it take to become a Big?
STEP 1: Complete the preliminary application
STEP 2: Participate in an in-depth, in-person interview with BBBSN staff
STEP 3: Submit contact information for reference check and driving history
STEP 4: Successfully pass a background check
STEP 5: Attend Big Orientation
