Whats onWe are thrilled to announce our photographer of the month John Laham will be appearing as our guest of honour at our Annual Photography Dinner in support of young and upcoming photographers. John’s eagle eye and innate ability for capturing a moment in time accounts for his uncanny ability to capture the authentic expression of his subject. Indeed, his is an es-tablished reputation for painstaking attention to detail reminiscent of a classic renaissance master.

His extensive portfolio illustrates an individual por-traiture style where the eyes are the focal point. With the use of light, mirrors and colour John Laham has created a trademark look that justly gave rise to nam-ing his studio ‘Expressions’.

With an industry record of 70 plus awards, his consid-erable collection includes a ‘National AIPP Australian Portrait Photographer of the Year’ and a ‘Don Taylor Award’, achieved in the same year no less. Yet, it is his client’s comments he values more than any award. With an enviable client list as far reaching as the US, Canada, Malaysia, the UK, Indonesia and Australia wide, John is regarded as a genius, visual artist, master and an innovative and creative photographer within and without the photographic profession.

John Laham is an inspiration to upcoming photographers. To our delight Laham agreed to a gallery day meet and greet at Catch a Moments exhibition gallery.

Book your school excursions now and treat your stu-dents to the experience of a lifetime. Mr Laham will demonstrate a range of techniques such as capturing the perfect shot, exposure timing and the best time of day to shoot. Don’t miss out on this extraordinary opportunity.

Photography tipsAlthough the subject you choose to photograph is always important, whether for colour photography or black and white photography, however, there are special factors to take in to consideration in black and white photography. For example, while some subjects may seem very interesting as photography material in colour, if you take a black and white picture of them, they often turn out looking dull. But then, often a simple scene or a portrait can come out looking quite dramatic in black and white. Many people in fact are opting to have their wedding pictures shot in black and white because of the romantic and timeless quality it gives them. When photographing people in black and white, the pictures come out better if they dressed in simple clothes, which have solid colours, instead of prints.

CHOOSING YOUR SUBJECT TAKE SHAPES INTO CONSIDERATION

ADD TEXTURE & COLOUR

CHOOSE YOUR BACKGROUND

CONSIDER YOUR PERSPECTIVE

USE OF LINES

VERTICAL OR HORIZONTAL

THE EFFECTS OF LIGHT & SHADOW

As a matter of fact, black and white photographs are basically about light and shadow. This is the reason they must be used as effectively as possible. For instance, try taking pictures of a scene at various times of the day and you will notice how light and shadow can affect the mood of a black and white photo. Another idea is to experiment with the quality or intensity of light. For instance, you could take a picture of a tree on a foggy day, and then photograph the same tree on a bright day.

Since black and white pictures lack color, they are dependent largely on lines and shapes to create interest. Try an incorporate a variety of shapes that create different types of lines such as curving lines, crooked lines, or slanting lines. Stark straight lines can also have dramatic effects in black and white photos.

While taking black and white photos you need to make sure that the subject does not get lost in the background. Often, just by shifting your subject a little to the left or right can help in eliminating unwanted elements in your photograph. Or you could try and take the picture from another angle.

Perspective can create some very interesting effects, especially in black and white photography. Perspective can bring alive a standard subject, it can suggest depth and mystery in every day objects, and, in fact, you can make a picture tell a story just by using an unusual angle while photo-graphing a scene in black and white. For instance tall buildings.

Texture can add interest and definition to black and white photos. For example, a black and white picture of a roughly textured wall will certainly look more interesting than a smooth wall, or a road made of cobblestones will look more dramatic than a smooth one. And yes, colours do matter. Different colours have different effects on black and white photos. For example, while green and red may look striking juxtaposed against each other in a coloured photo, however, the two colours become almost indistinguishable in a black and white photograph. The more contrast that colours have in their grayscale values, the more interest will they create in black and white pictures.

Horizontally framed images are as-sociated with serenity and peaceful-ness. Vertical images are usually as-sociated with forcefulness or power. Experiment with both formats when deciding on a composition.

Lines that lead the viewer’s eye to the centre of interest are referred to as “leading lines” and are an impor-tant element of composition. A good example would be a trail or path that invites the viewer to step into your photo. A leading line will draw the eye around the picture and this line can often be curving in a lazy S shape. Or it can be a straight line such a a railing or a railway track when the line leads to a vanishing point to create 3D perspective or to a subject. Pay attention to the interplay of lines, forms and shapes. One technique for leading lines is to blur out the immediate foreground or both the foreground and back-ground Once all the detail is blurred out it is easier to view the scene in terms of lines and shapes.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2The Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2 is an interesting little number that has a 10 megapixel resolution. It also has an optical zoom of 4x, which means it beats out many of the other cameras in the point and shoot category in terms of optical prowess. Some may think the controls on the camera should be easier to use, given its simplicity, but overall, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2 is a good choice for an enthusiast looking for a powerful camera that can be taken anywhere.

Basic point and shoot camera

Canon G12The Canon G12 is the latest of the powershot range, and is suitable for pros who want a lighter and less bulky camera, and amateur photographers who want quality photos without the price tag. With a 10 megapixel sensor and 5x optical zoom, this camera serves as a perfect middle ground between point and shoot and feature-packed SLRs. In addition to this, the G12 has a manual mode, allowing shutter speed and the aperture to be adjusted to your own personal preference, giving great control over photos, as well as above average performance in low-light situations. The main issue with this camera is its cost (far more than simple point and shoot cameras), and size (despite the fact that the lens retracts into the body when switched off, it won’t fit in your pocket)

Amateur photographers

Nikkon D300sPerfect for enthusiasts who want to upgrade from a simple point and shoot camera. This camera feels at ease when working in a studio, grabbing portraits, or capturing fast action in challenging conditions. The handling is quick with swift and accurate autofocus, no shutter lag to speak of, and quick continuous shooting. At 12.3 megapixels, this camera takes excellent photos for serious amateur and semi-professional photographers alike. Also, unlike earlier models of the D300, this version allows users to take HD video, a welcome addition.

The competitive market of photographySTARTING A NAME FOR YOUSELFAlready know that being a photographer is your dream? Then buy your professional photography domain name right now. Most of the time it’s your name, but if that’s not available you’re going to have to get crea-tive. The younger you are the better, because it takes long time to get a foothold in this industry. Start your image portfolio now, and keep adding to it, even if you’re still studying. There are many who believe that a diverse portfolio is the right way to go to get noticed. Instead focus your energy on finding out which types of photography you excel at. Then arrange them from best, to worst. In that order, concentrate on building a smart portfolio that highlights your strong points, and doesn’t give away any of your weaker ones. You’ll do this by including far more of your great photos than your average ones. TO MAKE IT BIG YOU HAVE TO MOVEMany photographers will reject this idea, but its one that can’t be ignored if you’re young, ambitious and looking to get ahead. You should, at some point after you have graduated with your degree, move to the media capital of your country. In America this could mean New York or LA. This is not to say you can’t become a photographer in your State, its just not going to be as rewarding. BE CREATIVE WHEN SPREADING THE WORDAfter you have published your portfolio online, find ways to alert the market that you specialize in about your services. Telephone calls don’t work, but these days we live in the social media age and that opens up a lot of opportunity for you. Think about ways of getting ads about your services out there.

Maintaining our credibilityAn excellent photographer excels at impressing and moving the audience with their meaningful works. To achieve this purpose, photographers tend to travel to as many places as possible to search for their own inspiration. Mark has inherited this good tradition from his predecessors. In some of his photos, we can see the magnificent and joyous scenes from a distinctive ‘beach wedding’, and have the same feeling of happi-ness as the newly-wed couple had. As for another set of photos, Mark travelled to the tropical rain forest to bring us the direct sensation about the diversity of the nature and how the animals live together harmoni-ously. While in contrast, the set of photos taken in a rural African village touches our hearts in a very differ-ent way: the nearly-depleted rivers, the rimous land, the weeping mother and her lean children reveal how people’s lives there were destroyed by poverty and natural disasters, bringing about the deepest sympathy from the audience. The different backdrops are the source of the different sensational feelings that come along with the photos. Mark has done a great job at making the most of the elements of the environ-ments to express his own ideas. The viewers are thus moved by these artworks.
