From The Head Teacher

Welcome back to the second half of Term 1. Just before we broke up, we celebrated Interna onal

Day. This day is a key event in the life of BIS and has become an essen al part of our heartbeat. With the

memories of that day s ll clear, I can say confidently that the school's heart is bea ng very strongly in‐

deed. Very many parents were involved in the day and we all owe thanks to everyone who planned,

shopped, cooked, decorated, dressed up, turned up and cleared up. The marvellous PTG Execu ve coor‐

dinated the efforts with Mr. Peter Gillmore and did a fabulous job. One Year 13 student at the end of the

day confessed that she was already star ng to miss BIS, with 7 months to s ll to go!

Those of you who followed the day on Twi er enjoyed the roaming interna onal selfies that were tweet‐

ed with the hashtags #bisinterna onalday or #bishcmcinterna onalday2014. Do follow @RichardMDyer

Interna onal day saw the start of a new, student‐led social enterprise called “RemindMe”. The group, set

up in Higher Level Business Management, consists of CEO David Bern, Holly Ledger, Joshua Nguyen, and

Se Hyun Cho. The group nego ated and organised for a photo booth to be set up on the third floor with

all profit being donated to charity.

Please note that we will use both our Primary & Secondary pools for this event. The U9, U10 & U11 Compe on will take place at our Primary Campus AP1 ‐ 225 Nguyen Van Huong, District 2, HCMC. U14 Boys 2014 Basketball Tournament On the 28th October 2014, the under 14 team of boys went to the Basketball City Championships, which was hosted at SSIS. The tournament was a great opportunity for us to com‐pete with other teams and make new friends. Although we finished in 4th place, the most important thing was that we all gave our best, pu ng in 100% effort into every game, ensuring everyone was sa sfied because they knew they had tried their hardest. U14 Girls 2014 Basketball Tournament This year’s basketball tournament was an amazing experi‐ence for everyone in the team, not only did we have fun, but we won! We played against SSIS and ISHCMC. We won both games, leading us to victory. Both teams were tough compe‐

on for us but good communica on, team work and sportsmanship helped us win both games. Our first game was against ISHCMC, we started off well and finished fantas‐cally with a score of 29‐10. Our second match was the one

which decided whether or not we would win. It was a close start but by the end of the first half we managed to edge into the lead. During the second half, there were spectacular shots from both teams. In the end we beat SSIS by 16‐09.

U19 Badminton Tournament The U19 badminton team travelled to SSIS to par cipate in the annual badminton city championships. Fadhli Zahirudin and Alexis Rigodin played together in the boy’s doubles com‐pe on winning 7 out of their 11 matches. Holly Ledger competed in the girl’s singles compe on and improved with each game she played. Rijul Sharma and Egor Immo‐reev par cipated in very compe ve boys singles tourna‐ment. Rijul worked very hard throughout the a ernoon win‐ning several of his matches. Egor proved to be a strong com‐pe tor losing only one match all tournament, narrowly los‐ing out on the tle losing 13‐11 to the overall champion. Egor finished runner‐up receiving a well‐deserved trophy.

MOVEMBERisreturningtoBIS! We, at the Cancer Ward Visits Club, are honoured and excited to announce the return of Movember to BIS this year! Movember is a campaign tradi onally linked to men’s health issues such as prostate cancer. It’s an annual event where men don’t shave for the month of November or they grow moustaches for this period in a empt to raise money and awareness for cancer research. In Vietnam, however, prostate cancer is one of the more minimal diagnoses of cancer and as our school works with children who are diagnosed with cancer, we do things slightly differently. For the last two years, the male teachers at BIS have grown moustaches for charity, similar to the tradi‐onal version of Movember, but instead of going to prostate cancer this money is given directly to Thuy’s

Dream, an organisa on that helps aid children with cancer and their families. Last year you may remember we had the huge shave‐off at the end of November, where teachers’ mous‐taches were auc oned off and students could shave their moustaches off. All in all, your dona ons raised 21 million VND for the children with cancer we visit. This year, we are asking the BIS students to vote for their favourite teacher by buying a s cker. At the end of the November, the teachers with the most votes will be entered in the shave off finale. Thank you in advance for suppor ng this worthwhile event. Gabby Cullen, Year 12V


What do you do with old batteries? Good ques on! With every portable electronic device using ba eries of some sort, we know they don’t last forever. They power your calculators, remote controls for your AC, TV, music player, children's toys, mobile phones, laptops and much more, but what do you do when they finally stop working?

Answer: Bring them into school As part of our commitment to protec ng the environment, each campus in BIS strives to reuse, recycle and reduce our waste wherever possible. Whether it is paper, card, plas c drinks bo les or even ba er‐ies, we would like you at home to think before disposing of it with your regular waste. We understand that it isn’t that easy finding recycling points around the city so we have taken the ini a ve. Each campus has a specific ba ery recycling point—their loca ons are: AP1 Recep on AP2 Under Cro TX Recep on We accept all household ba eries—AA, AAA cells, rechargeable, bu on type and mobile phone ba eries The reason (the small print): Ba eries that are thrown out with regular waste usually end up in land fill sites or some mes even burned. Over a period of me they can leak heavy metals (such as lead or mercu‐ry) and corrosive acids which pollute our rivers, lakes and groundwater, contamina ng the environments of many living things. The good news is that recycled materials contained in old ba eries can actually be re‐used by various industries.

2014 Interna onal Day had 27 countries represented in 24 Na onal Rooms. Thanks so much to all our Country Representa ves and your teams for your hard work, your enthusiasm, your crea vity and your willingness to par cipate in this great school community event. The rooms were sensa onal, the food was delicious and the ac vi es were inven ve and fun. This day is truly a team effort and we thank all of our Parent Helpers, Mr Peter Gilmore, Mrs Susan Wil‐son, Ms Phuong and her team of guards, maintenance men and cleaners, and all the BIS Teachers in mak‐ing it such a successful and memorable event.
