COMMUNITY ANGEL CARD

BIRTHDAYS

Council Fire Native American Wisdom

If you have been churned up about making a decision on what to do next, then the energy of this card is showing you that you need to come to some decision. When the tribe needed to make a decision that would affect the whole tribe or family, they would call a Council Fire. You can call your own council fire, meditate, call in the energy of your guides and sit with your own council. It takes courage to make changes, however there can be no movement forward without a decision made. Everything begins with a decision. If the decision affects others, consider all possibilities then proceed to act with courage.

Do it and don’t look back as life awaits you in all of its beauty.

Can  you  help  Douglina?   Chipembele, yes Chipembele (pronounced chip-em-beh-leh) is a charitable organisation that focuses on conservation education for local school children in the area of South Luangwa, Zambia. Besides educating the children in the township of Mfuwe and surrounding areas about the importance of conservation, Chipembele also takes into their care orphaned or injured animals. They look after them till they can return to their natural habitat. When we think of injured or orphaned animals in care in Australia, they are of a more manageable size such as possums, koalas, lizards etc, but when it comes to the great continent of Africa there are much larger animals that need help, such as 4 month old Douglina, the hippopotamus. She will remain in Chipembele’s care for the next 5 years before she is released to join a local pod.

Chipembele need financial help for Douglina’s very expensive care. If you would like to be part of Douglina’s care, go to Chipembele’s website, www.chipembele.org/appeal One-off donations or 6 levels of recurring monthly donations can be made: Helper $5 per month Guardian $50 per month Supporter $12.50 per month Benefactor $85 per month Partner $25 per month Parent $100 per month

Adopters will receive a special Douglina adoption certificate and exclusive monthly updates on Douglina’s progress and welfare. Chipembele have employed 3 local staff to care for Douglina. They feed her very large meals consisting of 2 litres of milk with two egg yolks and supplements every three hours throughout the day and night and she is growing quickly! If you want to see more of Douglina, have a look at her YouTube clip http://youtu.be/ReX9EQk0HEU The name Chipembele is the local word for ‘rhino’. Until the 1970s, the Luangwa Valley held the highest concentration of black rhinos on the African continent. Then the evil activity of poaching raised its ugly head: the combination of greed for money and an absence of conservation knowledge meant that by the late 1980s all the rhinos had been completely wiped out. And for what? Their horns were used for ‘medicine’ in Asia and for traditional knife handles in the Middle East. So what is the connection between Zambia and Balnarring? I first met Jude and Kaye who are very passionate and productive Chipembele supporters from Adelaide via email while I was doing volunteer admin work for the Thin Green Line Foundation in Balnarring. Since then my family has sponsored Chipembele’s end-of-year Christmas parties, providing funds to employ local Zambian residents to cater for the party lunch and a local DJ to play some great tunes. We have also posted boxes of stationery and clothing that is given as prizes in the day’s festivities for all 53 students. Throughout the year I have sent boxes of stationery to Chipembele and the local preschool, for which Chipembele pay the wages of the 2 teachers. The preschool has very little, so pencils, alphabet posters and flash cards are much needed items for the students aged 3 to 5. Sending these items was also made possible by some Balnarring and Somers families who helped with the cost of the items and postage which is a very expensive $32 per kilo. To learn more about Chipembele you can do so at www.chipembele.org Look out for the photos of the girls with their thumbs up wearing hats. I bought the hats from Balnarring Ritchies and sent them over for World Environment Day 2010. Chipembele ensure that 100% of all donations for a specific project go to that project. Have a good month Catherine Haylock

Crib Point Community House For mind, body and spirit

Does your creativity need a jump-start, inspiration, feedback or encouragement? Does your body need a push, coaxing or coaching?

Does your spirit need soothing, rejuvenating, stimulating?

Did you know that belly dancing can be as good for your body and your mind as yoga? Were you aware that easy walking could lead to jazz or tap dancing or even – oddly enough – patchwork, mosaics or lead lighting? Ever think that someone you meet in an art class might also share your interest in living with angels, playing billiards or restoring furniture? No? In that case you probably hadn’t guessed you could:

• make new friends through cake decorating • see the world through writing classes or digital photography • find yourself through folk art or tai chi • discover that, it’s easy when you know how.

If any of this is news to you, then you obviously haven’t been to the Crib Point Community House, because all of this – and more – goes on there and at other Community Houses all the time. The House, in Park Road, is more than a venue for classes, social activities and special interest groups, because it also offers Playgroups, health service information, support groups and referrals. You can use a computer, access the Internet, and hire a room or a badge machine. And if you’d like to get involved, in your local community, then there’s no better place to meet people. You could join a class or group, become a volunteer, join the committee or share your special skills or interest by tutoring others. If you’d like more information on the comings and goings and the goings-on at the Crib Point Community House, then ring 5983 9888 and our wonderful volunteers will only be too happy to help you.

FRIENDS OF DAANGEAN

The  friends  group  at  Devilbend  is  known  as  the  Friends  of  Daangean    a]er  the  Bunerong  name  for  the  area.

Now  that  Devilbend  Natural  Features  Reserve  is  open  to  the  public  and  the  refurbished    picnic  ground  with  gas  barbeques  and  new  toilet  is  finished,  I  feel  that  it  a  good  Ame  to  discuss  a  couple  of  ways  that  families  can  enjoy  nature  and  at  the  same  Ame  learn  about  some  marvellous  species  that  live  there.    On  the  second  Tuesday  of  every  month  the  Devilbend  and  Woods  Reserves  Bird  Monitoring  team  conducts  a  bird  count  along  set  tracks.  Everyone  is  welcome  from  beginner  to  expert.  We  are  now  in  the  10th  year  of  this  community  science  acAvity  and  in  that  Ame  we  have  recorded  over  150  bird  species,  one-‐third  of  which  are  specifically  wetland  species.      Devilbend  Reservoir  is  now  recognised  as  an  Important  Bird  Area  (IBA)  due  to  the  high  number  of  threatened  Blue-‐billed  Ducks  which  use  it  as  an  important  refuge  especially  during  drought  periods.  Watching  White-‐bellied  Sea  Eagles  and  Caspian  Terns  diving  for  their  prey  is  truly  spectacular.  The  Sea  Eagle  drops  rapidly,  feet  first  onto  a  fish  or  a  Coot  whereas  the  Tern  dives  head  first  for  a  small  to  medium  sized  fish.  Wedge-‐tailed  Eagles  frequently  circle  high  overhead  and  Whistling  Kites  and  Swamp  Harriers  commonly  search  for  small  creatures  around  the  shore  line.      If  you  would  like  to  aTend  this  acAvity  contact  Roger  Richards  on  mobile  0419  384  636  or  email  [email protected]

!"#$ "% & '( % $ )! % *$ "% #)+ % ( , ') In just a month or so, the Westernport Writers Group has grown from two motivated members to many more. If we all turned up on the same night together we would have eight people in the room. Genine has had to buy more chairs! A fantastic result so far. The Balnarring Bridge has played a big part in promoting our group, proving the little mag has a big audience. We have men and women, novel writers and non-fiction writers, and writers who dream to write, writers who want to turn their hand to something new and writers with vision. We aim to support all writers in their goals, provide a place they can share writings, dilemmas and perhaps find answers. We are open and inclusive and extend our welcome to all interested in writing. We meet every Friday evening from 7.30 to 9.30 at Suite 2, 2 Russell St, Balnarring (next to the physio). F@F*:;<*98;GH*!!In the St Lawrence River near Lake Ontario there is a region called 1000 Islands. It straddles the international border between Ontario (Canada) and New York State (USA). There are many small islands that have just a single house on them, and then larger ones that have numbers of luxury houses on them. Two-thirds of the islands are owned by Canadians, the rest by Americans. In total there are 1864 islands – an island there is defined as an outcrop measuring at least 2m x 1.5m with at least one tree on it! Now if that isn’t fascinating enough, there’s more! On one of the American islands a man named George Boldt built a castle. George owned the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York and loved to entertain guests on his yacht at the island. One night his chef forgot the salad dressing but quickly solved the problem. He improvised, mixing together mayonnaise, ketchup and pickled relish. It was so popular that George put it on the menu at his famous hotel. This new concoction was named Thousand Island dressing, a familiar product to many of us! $!O.0&@$?0&&08#($,&09$i1.-$!F3)1*$_41#$KL`a*$F+3-51($J0::'1)=$?@$!&';'5$Z#-3"*$::abGac<!

DID YOU KNOW BALNARRING HAS A NATIONALLY RENOWNED RESPITE CENTRE?

Have you heard of the Presentation Family Centre at Balnarring Beach?

For  the  past  22  years,  the  Presentation  Sisters’  project  at  Balnarring  has  provided  respite  accommodation  for  families  and  individuals  in  difficult  circumstances.    Their  situations  include  poverty,  low  income,  family/domestic  violence,  ill  health,  both  mental  and  physical,  refugee  status,  terminal  illness  and  homelessness.

The  Centre  provides  a  relaxing  space  for  families,  under  pressure  or  at  risk,  to  renew  body  and  soul.    Apart  from  the  school  holiday  periods,  when  we  conduct  children’s  programs  to  support  families  unable  to  afford  a  holiday,  the  houses  are  used  throughout  the  year  by  individuals,  groups  and  families.

As  with  many  not-‐for-‐profit  organisations,  we  are  largely  reliant  on  donors  for  our  annual  running  costs.    The  modest  rentals  our  guests  are  charged  (and  often  not  charged)  meet  less  than  20%  of  our  costs.    All  board  members  are  volunteers  as  are  many  of  the  local  people  who  provide  time  and  resources  to  support  the  Centre.

It  is  the  combination  of  volunteers  and  donors  that  continues  to  improve  our  offering  to  families  in  need;  we  would,  of  course,  be  grateful  to  receive  further  financial  or  physical  assistance  to  help  with  the  ongoing  upkeep  of  the  cottages.

The  Centre  has  an  existing  volunteer  program  but  we  are  always  in  need  of  further  help  and  generous  donations.  Please  note  that  all  donations  are  tax  deductible.

Our  contact  details  are  as  follows:

Presentation  Family  Centre  122  Balnarring  Beach  Road,  Balnarring  Vic  3926

 Email:  [email protected]

Website:  www.presentationfamilycentre.org.au

Telephone:  03  5983  1819

Fax:  03  5931  3449

The  mission  of  the  Presentation  Family  Centre  is  to  welcome  all  guests  and  make  them  feel  at  home  as  they  regenerate  their  spirits.

Peas  Be  With  You                                                                                              Ange  Roach  It  suddenly  struck  me  that  that  tiny  pea,  pretty  and  blue,  was  the  Earth.  I  put  up  my  thumb  and  shut  one  eye,  and  my  thumb  blotted  out  the  planet  Earth.  I  didn’t  feel  like  a  giant.  I  felt  very,  very  small.  Neil  Armstrong    Pea  -‐  Pisum  sativum

Peas  are  a  wonderful  crop  to  grow  for  a  delicious  harvest  in  early  spring.  There  are  several  major  groups  of  cultivars:

• peas  for  shelling,  sold  as  garden  peas  or  green  peas  • sugar  snap  peas  -‐  look  like  peas  used  for  shelling  but  have  a  tender,  crisp,  small,  pale

green  edible  pod  with  sweet  juicy  seeds  • snow  peas  -‐  edible,  flat-‐podded  peas,  pods  contain  tender,  sweet  seeds.

The  earliest  cultivated  peas,  dated  back  to  9750BC,  were  found  in  Spirit  Cave  on  the  Thai-‐Burma  border.  They  have  been  used  throughout  the  world  for  years  and  as  well  as  being  so  deliciously  sweet,  they  have  a  high  vitamin  and  mineral  content  and  also  are  a  vegetable  high  in  protein  and  fibre.  They  are  one  of  those  crops  that  give  back  to  the  soil  and  once  harvested  the  old  plants  are  a  great  ingredient  in  the  compost  bin.

Peas  like  a  sunny  position  and  love  a  freely  draining,  compost  rich,  slightly  alkaline  soil.  Adding  a  little  lime  to  the  soil  before  planting  will  aid  growth.  Pea  seeds  germinate  very  easily  but  can  be  helped  along  by  soaking  the  seeds  prior  to  planting  in  water  with  a  pinch  of  Epsom  salts.  The  magnesium  helps  to  stir  seeds  from  dormancy  into  active  growth.  Water  the  soil  well  the  day  before  planting  and  sow  in  a  moist  bed.  Try  to  avoid  watering  again  after  sowing  until  the  seedlings  have  emerged  because  the  seeds  tend  to  rot  if  too  wet.

Most  peas  need  support  so  supply  something  for  them  to  twine  on  -‐  a  fence,  a  net  or  a  number  of  strings  strung  between  two  poles,  individual  poles  for  each  plant  or,  my  preference-‐  a  tepee  made  from  3-‐4  bamboo  poles  tied  together  at  the  top.  As  soon  as  they  reach  3-‐5  cm  tall,  attach  them  to  their  twining  surface.  If  you  let  them  fall  they  may  rot  on  the  surface,  get  eaten  by  snails  or  twine  with  their  neighbours  and  become  difficult  to  separate.  Check  them  regularly  and  encourage  them  to  grow  upwards  -‐  that’s  the  direction  they  prefer  and  they  grow  very  fast.  Mulching  and  watering  when  dry  will  improve  the  crop,  especially  from  flowering  onwards.    Continual  picking  of  the  peas  results  in  a  greater  harvest.  They  have  a  high  sugar  content  and  start  losing  their  sweetness  soon  after  harvest,  so  eat  quickly.  Peas  are  normally  cooked  but  can  be  enjoyed  raw,  especially  in  salads  or  while  being  shelled!

Remember  the  pea  shoots  are  wonderful  additions  to  salads,  stir  fries  or  mounded  on  a  plate  with  a  squeeze  of  lemon.  They  have  become  a  very  popular  addition  to  garnishes  in  restaurants  and  are  so  easily  added  to  a  home  meal.  Choose  the  shoots  that  include  the  top  pair  of  small  leaves  (at  the  tip),  some  delicate  tendrils  attached  to  the  young  stem  and  maybe  a  few  larger  leaves  or  even  blossoms.

Pea  and  Broad  Bean  Salad  2kg  fresh  broad  beans,  podded  to  give  500g  1  cup  fresh  peas  ¼  cup  extra  virgin  olive  oil  1  lemon,  juiced  Pea  shoots  to  garnish

Bring  a  large  saucepan  of  salted  water  to  the  boil.  Cook  the  broad  beans  for  2  minutes  and  then  add  the  peas  and  cook  for  another  2  minutes,  until  tender.  Plunge  them  into  iced  water.  Drain  well.  Place  broad  beans  and  peas  into  a  bowl.  Add  all  remaining  ingredients  and  toss  together.  Serve  and  garnish  with  pea  shoots.

After  your  harvest,  if  there  is  a  variety  that  you  particularly  like,  let  a  few  pods  mature  completely  and  you  can  use  these  seeds  for  next  year.

A  quick  (albeit  bad)  joke:                    Why  did  the  tomato  blush?                                                                                                          Because  he  saw  Mr  Green  Pea  over  the  fence!!  (sorry!!)

HERE IS YOUR ASSIGNMENT IN LIFE YOU WILL RECEIVE A BODY

• You may like it or not, but it will be yours for the entire period this time around.

YOU WILL LEARN LESSONS

• You are enrolled in a full-time informal school called life. Each day in this school you will have the opportunity to learn lessons. You may like the lessons or think them irrelevant or stupid.

THERE ARE NO MISTAKES, ONLY LESSONS

• Growth is a process or turmoil, error and experimentation. The ‘failed’ experiments are as much a part of the process as the experiment that ultimately ‘works’.

A LESSON IS REPEATED UNTIL IT IS LEARNT

• A lesson will be presented to you until you have learnt it, then you can go onto the next lesson.

LEARNING LESSONS DOES NOT END

• There is no past that does not contain its lesson. If you are alive, then there are lessons to be learned.

‘THERE’ IS NO BETTER THAN ‘HERE’

• When your ‘there’ has become a ‘here’, you will simply contain another ‘there’ that will, again, look better than ‘here’.

OTHERS ARE MERELY MIRRORS OF YOU

• You cannot love or hate something about another person unless it reflects to you something you love or hate about yourself.

WHAT YOU MAKE OF YOUR LIFE IS UP TO YOU

• You have all the tools and resources you need; what you do with them is up to you. The choice is yours.

THE ANSWERS LIE INSIDE YOU

• The answers to life’s questions lie inside you. All you need to do is look, listen and trust.

WHETHER YOU THINK YOU CAN OR CAN’T, IN EITHER CASE YOU’LL BE

RIGHT. THINK ABOUT IT. Reference: Anonymous Courtesy of Chris Newell – 0412 269 995 - Chris (based in Balnarring) is a relationship counsellor and has professional qualifications in: Counselling, Hypnosis, Nutrition & Psychotherapy
