participate in a special German lunch at a restaurant. This year we

have decided to celebrate at the German Tivoli Club. It was great

to see our students dressed for the occasion.

Principal’s Message– Time to Look Ahead

Dear Parents, Staff & Students,

It is that time of the year again that we all begin to look ahead and plan for the coming weeks and the new year. I would like to draw your attention this week to a number of things that may warrant your considera-tion.

2019 School Placements

As we confirm in particular our prep numbers and other class numbers for next year, we ask that if there are any families intending to leave Bayswater South, and not joining us for 2019, that you please send me an email of your intention as soon as possible.

This is important, in not only allowing us to fully support your family and child during the transition process, but it provides valuable information in terms of our 2019 class planning.

Classes

It is expected that our numbers will grow to over 350 next year, up from 337 in 2018. The increase will re-sult in an extra class being introduced; therefore we will have 15 classes next year. Currently we are work-ing with our staff and conducting interviews to ensure we continue to build our staff capacity for 2019.

Class lists

Importantly, a major part of the planning process is the selection of class lists. Beginning from next week, teachers will begin to hold sessions culminating in our students passing on their friend/ working buddy lists to the teacher. Our students will discuss the importance of selecting friends and the importance of consid-ering those they best work with. They will select 6 friends they would like to be in their class next year and we will ensure they will have at least one selected friend in their 2019 class. It might be a nice idea to dis-cuss your child's choices at home.

Parent requests

If parents have particular requests/considerations regarding your child for next year, please contact your child's teacher. Your requests will be considered during the class formation process. Please note it is school policy not to accept requests for specific teachers.

Celebrations

Our year 6 children have started to celebrate their primary journey over the years by attending our annual German lunch on Friday. Yum! I was told a fun time was enjoyed by all.

BSPS Reminder & News Snippets Emergency details– It is every parents' responsibility to ensure your emergency details are updated regularly.

Bike safety - Students are reminded to walk their bikes and scooters on school grounds. While on pathways all students must look out for pedestrians and keep a good distance between themselves and other children.

Dogs on the school grounds—Could parents please refrain from bringing their dogs onto the school grounds, as per School Council regulations. Any dog on school grounds must have obtained special permission from the Council.

Prep excursion to Healesville Sanctuary Permission forms should be returned to your child’s classroom teacher. Payment for this excursion is due no later than Tuesday, 13th November. Grade 5/6 Melbourne Museum excursion The permission form and payment is due no later than Thursday, 15th November. 2019 School Fees The 2019 School Fees letter explaining the essential learning items, optional extras and voluntary financial contributions was sent home last week. Payment is due 10th December 2018. If paying by instalments the first instalment is due 10th December 2018. Payments can be made to the school via Qkr, BPay, Direct Debit, Credit Card, Eftpos, Cash or Cheque. Inside the Classroom— Year 2

In Year 2 we have been working on procedural writing. We have been learning that different

word choices can make procedures easier to read and follow. To help the students under-

stand this concept, we went out into the sandpit to construct our own sandcastles. It was

quickly discovered that there were a whole range of words we could use to help form our

sandcastle procedure (e.g. dig, sprinkle, scoop, pat, mold, carefully, softly, slowly etc.).

From Our PYP Coordinator—Family Voice

My article this week is about hearing from you as a parent community. At a school-wide curriculum level

it is relatively uncommon for schools to find out what the wider school community thinks is important.

Therefore, I ask you to fill out two simple surveys that will gather your opinion on two distinct areas.

What makes good writing?

The first survey is interested in finding out what you think the elements of good writing are. When you

read a novel or an article, what are the things that make it ‘good’? What do you do in your writing that

you think makes it ‘good’? What would you like your child to be doing in their writing? Therefore, I ask

you the same question 5 times: “What do you think is an element of good writing?” Where possible,

keep your answer to one word, or two words hyphenated (this makes data manipulation easier on my

end). The last question asks you to think about and write about what you think the purpose of writing

in school is.

This survey is structured in a similar way, and asks you to think deeply about what it is that you think is

important to know about the world that we live in. I want you to think outside of the facts (i.e. It is

important to know where you might place a comma) and turn your attention to big ideas and key

understandings (i.e. Sustainability). I ask you to answer these questions now because as a staff we are

currently developing our programme of inquiry (6 new units of inquiry at each year level that will

underpin most teaching and learning at BSPS) for 2019. Your voice on what is important to know and

understand is incredibly important to us and will possibly inform our direction.

Junior School House Cross Country 2018 - Prep-Year 2

November 14th 9:15-11:00

The Junior Cross Country run will be held at school on Wednesday 14th November. The races will commence at 9:20am with all students encouraged to participate in this fun event. All classes will practise running the track in the coming weeks. Students can come dressed in their house colours and appropriate running shoes. Parents are more than welcome to come along and support their child.

If there is rain on the day, the event will be postponed until the following Wednesday 21st November.

Hello, my name is Bronwyn Upton and I am the Bayswater South Primary School Chaplain. I would like to outline for you the role a Chaplain plays within the school community. A Chaplain will-

Provide care and be a friend

Be a 'listening ear' for those who need someone to talk to

Provide pastoral care (encouragement and support)

Help a child sort through a problem or an issue

Run support groups (eg. Friendship programs)

Connect with parents as the need arises

Refer a child to other professionals

Support teachers in class, helping out as needed Matters of faith are only pursued when a person wishes to talk about them Life is not always easy. But knowing that someone is there for you to talk to, to listen, to encourage and to walk alongside you can be very comforting and can help you through difficult situations. My chaplaincy role is about offering care and support to the whole school community. It's about working with students, parents and teachers to assist in meeting the need s that arise in our daily lives. Children today have to deal with some very 'grown up' issues such as family break-up, grief and addictions. Or they may be struggling to make friends or to fit in with their peers. These can be very traumatic for children and could affect their ability to cope with the stresses of daily life. As such it may be beneficial for your child to have someone who they can talk to. This would occur on a purely voluntary basis. If you would prefer that this interaction not happen for your child/ren, please contact the school. Please feel free to call me regarding anything I can help you with. I am available on Mondays and Tuesdays at the school betw een 9am – 2.30pm. Or leave a message anytime and I will call you back.
