Bayafunda is one of two mother tongue magazines published by the Ithuteng Dipuo Foundation. Bayafunda delivers a signi cant service to the youth of the Eastern Cape Province, along with teachers and parents.

Let’s go for it in 2012!

A New Year, new goals, new resolutions, new expectations! What a privilege to be alive in 2012. Many people I know, and maybe even a few that you know, never thought that this year would ever come.

A new year gives us a chance at a new beginning: A new Grade at school, a new job maybe, even a new family for some. We only have one life... Let’s live it to the full.

Put whatever extra time you have into your studies and make a success of this year! I am sure that with perseverance and hard work we can all make a success of whatever 2012 can throw at us.In English we have an idiom that says: Procrastination is the thief of time! To procrastinate means to put something off until a later stage. Isn’t this so true? If we keep extending deadlines, keep saying we will nish a job tomorrow, keep promising ourselves that we will complete an assignment later, we end up with too little time to complete it or just not doing it at all!

Let’s make 2012 a doing year. One where we put our minds to a task and complete it. One where we can account for what we have done. If we diligently do this, I am sure that when we look back at the year we will see many accomplishments and a lot of success.

Hoe so?

Hoping that a fresh start and a new life will restore their family spirit, Mee quits his job and buys an old rural house on 18 acres outside the city. This comes with a unique bonus feature: a zoo named the Rosemoor Animal Park, where dozens of animals reside under the care of head zookeeper Kelly Foster and her dedicated team. He and his two children will attempt to bring back to it’s once glorious state. With no experience, limited time and a shoestring budget, Mee sets out with the support of his family and the local community to reopen the zoo. Now, Benjamin is no longer reporting an adventure story; he’s living his own...and it is right in his own backyard. The lm weaves together warmth, laughter and a spirit of optimism.

The Binding Cord is set in the Eastern Cape’s former Transkei, pastoral land of the ama-Xhosa, during the years 1924 to 1948, and recounts historical events that affected the people at the time.

Woven into the tale are the tribal customs of the rural Xhosas - such as intonjane (when a young girl reaches puberty) uku-twala (when a young girl is abducted and carried off by a suitor), courtship, lobola, traditional marriage, childbearing and hlonipa (when younger people show respect towards their elders).

It is a romantic, historical novel about young people from different cultures, growing up together and forming close and lasting friendships, while at the same time exposing the harsh, racial prejudices and narrow-minded religious bigotry which affected the lives of the characters.

As you proceed up the evolutionary ladder from

sh toward humans, check out the changes in the brain. For example,

the cerebrum gets bigger, takes up a larger part of the total brain and

becomes folded

VENUS has dense clouds of brownish, yellow sulphuric acid, a few high mountains and a few volcanos. It is the hottest of all the planets.

EARTH has blue oceans, brown and green continents, and swirling white clouds when seen from space. At the north and south poles are white icecaps. Earth has one moon.

MARS has pink sand dunes and pink dust storms. It has the deepest valleys and highest mountains in the solar system. It has icecaps at its two poles, just like Earth. Mars has two tiny moons called Phobos and Deimos. We have learned a lot about Mars from the spaceship, called Mars Path nder, that landed on the planet to collect images and data.

JUPITER is the largest planet in our solar system. It is made of gas and liquid and is not quite round, but a little atter at its poles. It has bright, white clouds and orange and browns belts all around the planet. There is one very clear ring around the planet. Jupiter has 16 moons, one bigger that the planet Mercury.

SATURN has multicoloured rings all around it. These rings are made up of billions of grains of all kinds of material, and rocks. Saturn has 18 moons that we know of.

URANUS orbits the Sun on its side! It has nine faint, multicoloured rings as well as 15 moons.

NEPTUNE has blue skies like Earth and is very cold. It takes about 165 years to travel around the Sun. It has one large and two small moons.

PLUTO, the coldest, smallest planet, was the last to be discovered. It takes 243 years to travel around the Sun. It has one moon, Charon, which is almost as big as Pluto itself. It has a strange orbit that at times brings it closer to the Sun than Neptune

Beginning with Mercury, the closest to the Sun, and ending with Pluto, the farthest from the Sun, the sentence gives you clues to

the order of the planets.

The planets are named after ancient Greek and Roman gods. An easy way to remember these names is to remember the sentence:(The rst letter, of each word stands for one of the planets)

Become familiar with the test that you are about to take and have a mental plan for how you will spend your time most productively during the examination. If you follow a positive plan of action as you take the test, you will be less likely to feel helpless or to be preoccupied with anxious thoughts. Here are some useful test-taking strategies:

Make a point to listen closely to any test directions that are read aloud. Read through written directions at least twice before starting on a test section to ensure that you do not misinterpret them.

If you are confused or unsure of the test directions, ask the teacher or test proctor to explain or clarify them. It is better to seek help to clear up any confusion that you may have than to run the risk of misunderstanding the directions and completing test items incorrectly.

At the start of the test, write down on a sheet of scrap paper any facts or key information that you are afraid that you might forget. This ‘brain dump’ will help you to feel less anxious about forgetting important content. Plus, you can consult this sheet of information as a convenient reference during the test.

Look over the sections of the test. Think about the total amount of time that you have to complete the test. Look at the point values that you can earn on each section of the examination. Budget your total time wisely so that you don’t spend too much time on test sections that contribute few points to your score.

Underline key terms. Before writing your essay, it is a good idea to underline important terms that appear in the test question as a check on your understanding. Words such as compare, contrast, discuss, and summarise will give you clear direction on the form that your essay should take and the content that it should include.Outline your answer before you write it. No teacher wants to read a rambling essay that fails to answer the test question. You can improve the quality of your essay by rst organizing your thoughts into a brief outline on scrap paper before you write it. Even a few short minutes of planning time can signi cantly improve the readability and organisation of your essays. And don’t forget to write neatly!

Don’t get sidetracked looking for patterns of answers. Some people claim that students can do better on multiple-choice tests if they look for patterns in the answers. For example, the advice is often given that, on questions with four possible answers, teachers most frequently choose “C” as the correct response. In rare cases, such patterns may actually exist - but it is never a reliable strategy to count on tricks and short cuts to do well on a test. Instead, your best bet is to study hard and rely on your own knowledge of the subject to do well.Don’t rush. On multiple-choice items, force yourself to read each possible choice carefully before selecting an answer. Remember, some choices appear correct at rst glance but turn out to be wrong when you take a closer look.
