Dave Marnane and Settle For Bay after winning
the Royal Hunt Cup | Racing Post
BAY SUCCESS A LONGTIME IN THE MAKING
By Kevin Blake
Royal Ascot is where everyone that is involved in Flat racing
wants to be represented. With this in mind, a trainer with just
25 horses in his care couldn't reasonably expect to have a
runner at the meeting, never mind a winner, but Dave Marnane
is no ordinary 25-horse trainer. Indeed, for those that have paid
attention to the career of the Tipperary-based handler, it will
have been no surprise to see him in the winner's enclosure at
Royal Ascot last week.
In the last decade Marnane has built up a remarkable record in
some of the most competitive handicaps on the British racing
calendar. He has saddled two different horses to win the
Portland H. at Doncaster, as well as a winner of the Victoria Cup
at Ascot and the Wokingham at Royal Ascot. To emphasise just
how difficult those races are to win, no other Irish-based trainer
has won the Portland or the Victoria Cup in the last 50 years and
his win in the Wokingham was the first Irish-trained winner of
that race for 27 years.
Marnane has also proven adept at sending horses to the Dubai
Carnival with great success, having saddled a winner there each
year from 2011 to 2014 and having had multiple placed horses
either side of those victories. Last Wednesday, Marnane added
to his CV by becoming just the second Irish-based trainer in the
last 50 years to saddle the winner of the Royal Hunt Cup at
Royal Ascot thanks to the extraordinarily easy victory of Settle
For Bay (Fr) (Rio de la Plata).
In common with Marnane's other winners of valuable British
handicaps, planning was key to this success. It represented the
realisation of a plot that had its origins over a year earlier, but
had met with a very serious setback along the way.
"Settle For Bay always worked like a smart horse and when he
won his first handicap off 69 in April last year, we actually
started planning a path for him to the Britannia H. at Royal Ascot
that year,@ Marnane said. AUnfortunately, we didn't get very far
with it, as he fractured his pelvis in his very next start at
Dundalk." Cont. p2

WE DON’T HAVE MANY HORSES HERE,
BUT WHEN WE GET A GOOD ONE,
WE KNOW WHAT TO DO.Dave Marnane
Bay Success A Long Time In The Making cont. from p1
"To be honest, it didn't look good for him that evening. We
thought he was a goner. Thankfully, he was sensible enough to
know he was in trouble, pull himself up and stand still. We soon
discovered that he had what was quite a significant fracture. The
racecourse vets did a great job with him up there and we
decided to bring him home that night. Our head travelling lad
Danny O'Connell had the longest trip home from Dundalk that
he ever had that night, as he had to drive very slowly so as not
to risk Settle For Bay getting unsettled and moving in a way that
disrupted the fracture."
"When we got him home, he had to be tied up in his box so
that he couldn't lie down or roll for four weeks. That is a big ask
of any horse, but he was the perfect patient the whole way
through. As a result, he was able to come back into training
much faster than would have been expected. It's quite
remarkable to think that he was back racing 19 weeks to the day
after breaking his pelvis as significantly as he did."
Having bounced back from his serious pelvis injury, Settle For
Bay improved from race to race and soon embarked on what
would prove to be a four-race winning streak at Dundalk during
the winter months. Each win was more impressive than the one
that preceded it, with his fourth win being the one that led
Marnane to hatch a plan.
"It was only after his fourth win at Dundalk that he looked the
real deal,@ the trainer said. APrior to that, he had always looked a
bit green when he hit the front, but that day he was as straight
as a gun barrel and really looked as though the penny had fully
dropped with him. We had our suspicions and hopes prior to
that, but that was the day that he really jumped out at us as a
horse that could win a Royal Hunt Cup."
"We don't have many horses here, but when we get a good
one we know what to do. He was raised to a mark of 99 after
that win, which historically made him highly likely to get into the
Royal Hunt Cup, so we made that his target. We gave him a nice
break after that and he ran a lovely race on his comeback at
Leopardstown in May.
TDN EUROPE/INTERNATIONAL • PAGE 3 OF 10 • THETDN.COM FRIDAY • 29 JUNE 2018
What really pleased us about that run is that he was in tight
quarters all the way, something which he didn't have a lot of
experience of prior to that, and he seemed to relish it. That gave
us great hope that the hustle and bustle of a Royal Hunt Cup
wouldn't hold any fears for him."
Everything had gone smoothly for Settle For Bay in his
preparation for the Royal Hunt Cup up to the week before the
race, but there was one very significant scare left for him to
overcome.
"He just didn't blow me away in his last breeze the Thursday
before the race and when we scoped him, he wasn't spotless,@
Marnane said. AHe wasn't dirty as such, but he wasn't spotless.
As you can imagine, this frightened the life out of us. We did
what we could with him for the next couple of days and scoped
him again on Sunday. Mercifully, he was 100% and we sent him
on his way to Royal Ascot. He doesn't travel all that well when
he's by himself, so we sent over his next-door neighbour
Kodiac's Back with him for the journey. I have to thank Ascot for
accommodating us with that, as it was a big help."
When encountering the likes of Royal Ascot for the first time,
young horses tend to shrink, boil over or grow. In Settle For
Bay's case it was very much the latter.
"At home, he is an absolute Christian of a horse. My youngest
daughter Emily is his biggest fan and she goes into his stable all
the time and we don't have to worry about her. He puts his
head in her lap and is content to stay there all day! However, in
the build-up to the Royal Hunt Cup, I saw a side of him I hadn't
seen before. Whether it was the atmosphere or what, he just
came alive. From when he left his stable to go up to the
racecourse, he was angry! The racecourse farrier had to make a
small adjustment to one of his shoes as we were saddling him
and Settle For Bay gave him a horrible time of it. That said, once
Billy got up on him, he focused his mind and was all business
from there."
One can imagine that watching the vessel of one's hopes and
dreams in a cavalry charge such as the Royal Hunt Cup would be
likely to make for torrid viewing, but such was the ease with
which Settle For Bay travelled, Marnane hardly had a moment of
doubt.
"The race itself was remarkably easy to watch. My only
instructions to Billy were to make sure he got cover and to get
him relaxed, regardless of how far back he was. Once he had
gone two furlongs and had settled, I was very happy. It's not
often watching a race like the Royal Hunt Cup that you can really
believe that you are on a winner fully two furlongs from home,
but it was very straightforward for him."
Emotions ran high after the race with Marnane and numerous
members of his team shedding tears. While winning on that
stage is also likely to be emotional, there was more to that

emotion than meets the eye.
"It was emotional afterwards for a few reasons. We've thought
he was a good horse for a long time. All through the autumn,
winter and spring we've been looking at him and dreaming what
he might be capable of doing. It might be different for a bigger
yard with plenty of horses that they can dream with, but for us it
was all about him. To then see him to go and show what we
have always believed he could do on a stage like Royal Ascot, it's
a real release. You'd need to be a tougher man than me to be
able to hold all that emotion in."
"It wasn't just about the horse, either,@ he added. AOne of his
owners Dennis McGettigan's wife Nicola had a serious health
scare during the winter. Around Christmas time she told us that
her chemotherapy was due to finish in June and I said to her
that during her treatment she could look forward to leading in
Settle For Bay after he won at Royal Ascot. It was only talk at the
time, so for it to happen and for Nicola to be there with Dennis
and his other owner Mossie Casey to greet him in the winner's
enclosure made it extra special."
"You need the right horses to get you to meetings like Royal
Ascot, but you also need the right team. My wife Mel is a huge
help, as is my brother Ed who is a big part of the race planning.
James Casey rides him every day and was with him at Ascot. We
have a small team, most of which have been with us a long time,
and it's great for all of them to be part of such a big win."
"Looking forward, we obviously can't wait to get Settle For Bay
out again. We will look at a listed race for him next and all being
well, we'll look at the Dubai Carnival for him. We won't be afraid
to travel him for suitable races and he'd have you dreaming of
running in races like the Arlington Million."

While the Settle For Bay story promises to run for quite some
time yet, Marnane's attentions will soon turn to finding his next
star at the yearling sales. With Marnane having bought the likes
of Settle For Bay (i35,000 in conjunction with Peter Doyle),
Dandy Boy (20,000gns), Jamesie (,11,000) and Elleval (,45,000),
his eye for a bargain speaks for itself.
"We have a few empty stables here and will be hoping to fill
them at the upcoming yearling sales. We have had success
putting together 10-member syndicates made up of two or
three yearlings each. We charge an all-in price that pays for the
horses and for their training up to the end of their 2-year-old
year. At that stage, we balance the books and make a decision
with the syndicate whether to sell the horses or to race on. The
people that have got involved seem to enjoy that structure and
we have had plenty of winners in them already, most notably
Freescape who was an intended runner in the Britannia S. at
Royal Ascot last week until a stone bruise ruled him out. We
have already had plenty of interest from people looking to get
involved in new syndicates this autumn, but if anyone wants to
get involved they are more than welcome to get in touch."
With the racing world having been given a timely reminder of
Marnane's talents on the grandest of stages, it seems likely that
those empty stables will not remain unoccupied for long.
SAXON HEADS DERBY DOZEN >TDN Rising Star= Saxon Warrior (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) will
be joined by three talented stablemates as he bids to add to his
Classic tally in Saturday=s G1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby at The
Curragh. This will be no cakewalk for the odds-on favourite, with
this being the first time since 2010 that the race has attracted a
double-figure field, but he has an ideal draw in two and has
been giving out all the right signals at Ballydoyle since his fall to
earth when fourth in the G1 Epsom Derby. This is also the
fastest ground he has encountered in his brief career and on all
known evidence from his pedigree he is destined to shine on it.
Fellow >TDN Rising Star= Delano Roosevelt (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) is
one making a quick return from Royal Ascot duty, having
finished worst of his stable=s trio that took part in the G2 King
Edward VII S. won by one of this renewal=s supplementary
entries Old Persian (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}). Fourth behind that rival
and the runner-up Rostropovich (GB) (Frankel {GB}), he has the
yard=s supersub jockey Seamie Heffernan in the saddle and bids
to provide that rider with a third edition and back-to-back ones
after the exploits of Capri (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) 12 months ago.
>TDN Rising Star= The Pentagon (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) could be the
one to make the running under Wayne Lordan, while the British
raiders Knight To Behold (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) and Dee Ex
Bee (GB) (Farhh {GB}) are other pace factors, with the latter
needing a strong end-to-end gallop and so primed to make up
for any hesitancy from the Ballydoyle crew under the front-
running wizard Silvestre De Sousa.
Temperatures are set to soar in Kildare, as they are
everywhere, at the weekend and Dermot Weld admits to some
concern regarding Calumet Farm=s unbeaten Bandua (The
Factor), whose two outings have come on testing ground. Cont. p6

AI=m well aware that he has won on soft ground so far and I
identified early in the year that he bends his knee and will be
better with a bit more ease in the ground,@ he said. AThis is
pretty ambitious, but he=s a lovely colt who is very sound and
progressive and we=re happy with the way he=s working. The
owner is keen to take his chance and it=s the Derby, so as long as
he gives a good account of himself we=ll be happy.@
One for whom fast ground is no worry is Yuesheng Zhang=s
Platinum Warrior (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who won in similar
conditions when beating Latrobe (Ire) (Camelot {GB})
convincingly in the G3 Gallinule S. over 10 furlongs here on May
27. Trainer Mick Halford commented, AIt is only the second time
we=ve had a runner in the Irish Derby and his preparation has
gone very well. He=s a very straightforward horse and we are
hoping that the extra two furlongs will make a difference to him.
He has a beautiful pedigree and loves fast ground.@
BHA UPGRADES BODY PROTECTORS Jockeys in Britain will be required to wear Level 2 body
protectors, rather than Level 1, from Oct. 1. The upgrade, which
is the first since 2015, is due to the fact that Level 2 vests offer
superior protection up to 50% against direct blows. Irish racing
adopted the vests last year, and France is expected to follow
next year. Due to the increased weight of the Level 2 vests,
jockeys will be given one pound extra weight allowance at the
scales.
Leading jumps rider Ruby Walsh said, AI think there is a huge
improvement between the Level 1 and Level 2 back protectors.
From taking heavy enough falls riding in Steeple Chase races to
horses landing on you, standing on you, kicking you, I find the
Level 2 provides way more protection.@
AFTERCARE SURVEY TO OWNERS The British Horseracing Authority will on Friday send owners a
voluntary online survey to help investigate and better
understand the aftercare of Thoroughbreds. This follows on
from a survey sent to trainers earlier in the year and is an
important part of developing the BHA=s equine health and
welfare strategy, part of which is to improve traceability of
Thoroughbred racehorses from foals to beyond retirement.
David Sykes, director of Equine Health and Welfare at the BHA,
said, AThe survey we sent to trainers earlier in the year proved
to be an extremely useful source of information regarding what
happens to horses when they leave training yards, and I=m sure
we will get plenty of information from owners too which will
inform future work on improving racehorse traceability.@
If you are an owner and do not receive a survey or would like
a hard copy, email [email protected].

RECORD TOP PRICE AT DERBY SALE Aiden Murphy had his name on the tickets for the top three
lots during the second and final session of the Tattersalls Ireland
Derby Sale on Thursday, all in conjunction with different buyers.
The top-priced lot was a i365,000 Milan (GB) 3-year-old gelding
(lot 462), signed for by Murphy on behalf of MV Magnier. That
marked a record high price for the sale.
"MV has been supporting the market all week,@ Murphy said.
AHe is a seriously lovely horse and from a hugely successful
producer."
The gelding was sold by John Dwan=s Ballyreddin Stud, which
had bought him for i40,000 as a foal.
"He was a lovely, scopey foal and I loved him--he has a great
walk too,@ said Dwan. "[Half-brother] Altior had just won his first
hurdle, but has obviously done so much since then. This horse
has also blossomed since. This has exceeded my expectations."
Murphy signed for a 3-year-old Martaline (GB) gelding (lot
448) at i240,000, and that one is set to go into training with his
son Olly. Murphy also signed for lot 444, a 3-year-old gelding
named No Risk des Flos (Fr) (No Risk At All {Fr}), for i200,000;
those three were the only offerings to top the i200,000 mark
during the session.
The sale as a whole ultimately returned a clearance rate of
85%, which was on par with last year, while the average and
median both held steady as well: the median was down 2% at
i42,000, while the average remained the same at i51,558.

THE AMERICANIZATION OF THE PLATE
by Perry Lefko
The increasing Americanization of the Queen's Plate--Canada's
most-prestigious race--is reflected in this year's edition, in which
six of the scheduled 16 starters at Woodbine have U.S. owners.
Ken Ramsey, who won the Plate in 2016 with 15-1 long shot Sir
Dudley Digges (Gio Ponti) and placed fourth in 2014 with 9-5
favorite We Miss Artie (Artie Schiller), has three horses
scheduled to run in Saturday's race. The trio includes Boyhood
Dream (Dialed In), Marriage Counselor (Overanalyze) and
Pawnbroker (Gio Ponti). All are trained by Mike Maker.
Gary Barber, who won the 2014 Plate with Lexie Lou (Sligo
Bay), will be trying for his second win with another filly, Wonder
Gadot (Medaglio d'Oro); Barbara Banke's Stonestreet Stables
has Telekinesis (Ghostzapper), the Queen's Plate winterbook
favorite; and the partnership of B. Wayne Hughes's Spendthrift
Farm and Town and Country Racing (Kiki Courtelis) will send out
Alternative Route (Tiznow).
According to Canadian horse racing historian Lou Cauz, who
has written two books about the Queen's Plate, there have
never been this many horses owned by Americans running in
the race, which has its 159th renewal this year.

WESLEY=S WORLD: AN OWNER, BREEDER
AND TRAINER by Sid Fernando
I had no idea, back in March, that some folks in casual attire at
Craig Bernick's annual crawfish boil at Glen Hill Farm in Ocala
would be on television or social media three months later in
morning suits and top hats at Royal Ascot--except for Wesley
Ward, of course. Ward's name has become synonymous with
Royal Ascot, just as it once was with the Fairplex fair and now is
with early 2-year-olds at Keeneland.
I met Ward for the first time that evening outside the pristine
mid-century modern home where Leonard Lavin lived at Glen
Hill. He was nursing a glass of red wine and was surrounded by a
group of young college women who'd started a racing
partnership with Bernick's help, and they were asking him
questions and treating him like a rock star.

After 28 years of service at Lane’s End Farm, the popular Lexi Calabrese called it a day
on Thursday, and was presented with a framed A.P. Indy halter from her co-workers at

$2.9 million as a Keeneland July yearling. Best of luck in your retirement, Lexi!

The Americanization of the Plate cont.
"More Canadian horses are being sold at Keeneland or
Saratoga and so on," Cauz said. "Our program up here is very
healthy to run Ontario-breds, and of course we have the Ontario
Sires program up here and [Woodbine is] a great racetrack to
run at. It's one of the top three or four racetracks in North
America. We are more global now. Northern Dancer (Nearctic)
made us global. It's all the evolution of the Queen's Plate and
how things have changed. Americans have gotten [more]
involved in Canadian racing."
Banke, who has never run a horse in the Plate and will be
making her first trip to Woodbine, had high praise for the race.
"The Plate is the pinnacle of Canadian racing and it's a good
race to target," she said. "I hope that it's a very good time for all
the connections and I'm looking forward to it. I think racing is
becoming increasingly a global industry, and you'll see maybe
more horses coming in from Europe and the U.S. to compete in
the big races.
"The Plate was always a potential target for this horse," Banke
added. "I'm looking forward to seeing how he does. We thought
about running in the Preakness, but I had Good Magic (Curlin) in
the race and we felt he needed a little more seasoning. Given
the weather conditions in the Preakness, I'm glad we didn't. I
think he's a very good horse and he can run on the (synthetic)
track up there and on dirt and possibly on grass."
Offspring of Ghostzapper have won two of the last three
Plates--Holy Helena (2017) and Shaman Ghost (2015).
Over the years, there have been several American owners that
have won the Plate, including New York's Earle Mack in 1993
with Peteski (Affirmed), who subsequently went on to sweep
the Canadian Triple Crown with victories in the Prince Of Wales
S. and the Breeders' S.
Ramsey had four horses nominated to the Plate and, in
conjunction with trainer Mike Maker, decided to run a string
full-time this season at Woodbine, rather than shipping in and
out.
"We hope to have three or four next year (in the Plate) and
maybe a better quality of horse next year than what we're
running this year," Ramsey said, adding that Americans are
becoming more attracted to the Plate because of Woodbine=s
relative proximity to many American racetracks.
"I think owners down here enjoy going back up there," he
continued. "I like the pomp and ceremony. It's sort of like Royal
Ascot. The people up there are in their morning coats and top
hats. I plan on wearing the same outfit that I wore to Royal
Ascot. The Queen [Elizabeth II] sent me a letter on Buckingham
Palace stationary congratulating me on winning the Queen's
Plate, along with a check for 100 guineas. It's an old tradition
that started back in Queen Victoria's reign. I=m not going to cash
the check, because the whole thing is to remember. Most races
don't send you something like that."
This will be the first horse Spendthrift will run in the Plate.
"We're not as familiar with it as we would be with the Kentucky
Derby, but we're certainly aware it's a very prestigious race,"
Spendthrift General Manager Ned Toffey said. "For the most
part, we felt like it was a good fit for this horse that we bought
out of the Fasig-Tipton 2-year-old sale at Gulfstream. For us, the
Canadian-bred aspect was really incidental. Obviously that
builds a little bit of value. It's a nice position to have, but first
and foremost what we're looking for is stallion prospects. We
really weren't thinking about the Queen's Plate or other things,
but obviously we saw there's some history there with his
full-sister Enstone, who ran very well in Canada. We always
knew that was a route we could take.@
As for the other half of the partnership on Alternative Route,
Shannon Potter, Chief Executive Officer of Town And Country
Racing, said the Plate is another outlet for a horse that may not
like the dirt. Moreover, it has a significant purse of $1 million
Canadian (or the equivalent of about $750,000 U.S.)
"It's the ultimate get-out for us," Potter said.

Wesley Ward | Coady photography
Lady Aurelia | Breeders= Cup/Eclipse Sportswire
Sid Fernando: Taking Stock cont. from p1
Ward was modest, perhaps mildly embarrassed by the
attention, but pleasantly acquiesced. He seemed to have a
permanent smile on his face. Later, he welcomed my
introduction, and when I mentioned a mutual friend, he quickly
snapped a selfie of us together and shot it off to her.
It was easy to like the guy right away. He was smart,
straightforward, had no airs and seemed genuine. I'd paid close
attention to him in New York in 1984 when he won an Eclipse as
the leading apprentice rider and later I'd casually followed his
training career as it developed in the 1990s in California. What
had particularly struck me through the years was that Ward was
starting to train homebreds, too. It's not often that an ex-jockey
becomes a trainer, owner, and breeder.
One of Ward's notable homebreds was the filly Bear Fan (Pine
Bluff), co-owned with Peter Fan, and the arc of her racing career
foreshadowed some elements of Ward's Royal Ascot forays:
breed a horse, take a partner, and ship to a place far from home
where you can win a prestigious race and add to the horse's
value.
A California-bred foal of 1999, Bear Fan won her debut in
typical Ward fashion at Hollywood Park, albeit at three instead
of two; raced against state-breds early on; and was tried against
graded California fillies later, finishing second in the GIII Desert
Stormer H. at Hollywood. She was then shipped across the
country from California to Maryland to target Laurel's
GII Barbara Fritchie H., which she won, in 2004. The mare would
add the Grade 2 Genuine Risk and Vagrancy Handicaps at
Belmont (by a combined 14 lengths) to her resume that year
and retired with a record of eight wins from 16 starts and
$808,150 in earnings.
These days, Ward said, he owns about 25 broodmares and is
still passionate about breeding. He foals his mares in Kentucky
now and is hands-on through every stage of their development,
and slowly he's been upgrading the quality of stallions he uses.
Early on, he stood a few sires himself, horses like Bring the Heat
(In Excess {Ire})--sire of two graded stakes winners Lost Bus and
Madman Diaries, bred or co-bred by Ward--and Iqbaal
(Medaglia d'Oro). But now his homebreds are by horses like Scat
Daddy and Distorted Humor, the sire of Ward's Grade III winner
Happy Like a Fool, who now races for Merriebelle Stable and
Coolmore. He noted that he uses several sires at Ashford,
including American Pharoah, for whom he has high hopes.
Homebreds alone can't wholly sustain Ward's operation, so
he's fortunate to have a steady stream of owners and investors.
Some of them from Ward's orbit at the Glen Hill crawfish boil
who later reappeared at Royal Ascot included Gatewood Bell of
Cromwell Bloodstock and Hat Creek Racing; Bradley Weisbord,
agent for the ubiquitous Sol Kumin; Walker Hancock of
Claiborne; and Charlie O'Connor of Coolmore's Ashford.
About 20-odd years ago, Ward told me recently, he'd forged a
relationship with Coolmore's Paul Shanahan under adverse
conditions. Ward had "overbred a mare" to an Ashford stallion
and couldn't pay the fee when it came due and asked Shanahan
for some extra time to pay off the debt. Shanahan granted it.
Ward eventually paid it off, but was impressed and appreciative
that Shanahan, without knowing him--a small-time trainer at the
time--had agreed to the arrangement. "He's a great friend of
mine, a guy that's really, really helped me to be successful. He's
been wonderful," Ward said.

Sid Fernando: Taking Stock cont.
That Coolmore connection has paid mutual dividends through
the years, notably with Acapulco (Scat Daddy), winner of the
G2 Queen Mary S. for Coolmore, No Nay Never (Scat Daddy),
winner of the G1 Prix Morny for
Coolmore and Ice Wine Stable, and
Hootenany (Quality Road), winner
of the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile
Turf for Coolmore. Ward also raced
his homebred Pablo Del Monte
(Giant's Causeway) in partnership
with Coolmore and was third with
the colt in the 2014 GI Blue Grass S.
Both No Nay Never and
Hootenanny were also Royal Ascot
winners for Ward along with
Acapulco. No Nay Never is now off
to a hot start at stud with 10
winners--including one trained by
Ward--from his first crop this year
and is a potential big-time stallion for Coolmore as a son of Scat
Daddy--also the sire of Ward's marquee filly, Stonestreet Farm's
European champion and Royal Ascot Group 1 winner Lady
Aurelia, who captured the King's Stand in 2017.
Gatewood Bell, son of Darley's Jimmy Bell, purchased both No
Nay Never for $95,000 at Keeneland September 2012 and
Hootenany for $75,000 at Keeneland September 2013 under his
Cromwell Bloodstock banner. Cromwell also purchased Ward's
Grade II winner Bound for Nowhere
(The Factor), who was a narrowly
beaten third in the G1 Diamond
Jubilee at Royal Ascot this year, for
$310,000 at Keeneland September
2015, and at the same sale,
Cromwell also signed the $130,000
ticket for the graded-placed stakes
winner Con Te Partiro (Scat Daddy),
a winner at Royal Ascot last year for
Hat Creek Racing, a partnership
that's growing in popularity each
year with Bell's prowess for
selecting stock at reasonable prices
and Ward's development of them.

Bradley Weisbord was at Royal Ascot with Kumin, whose wife
Elizabeth is now a co-owner of Undrafted (Purim) with Wes
Welker after Weisbord agented the deal. Undrafted was initially
purchased for $50,000 at Keeneland September 2011 by Bell's
Hat Creek Racing and won the Diamond Jubilee for Ward and
Welker at Royal Ascot in 2015.
Ocala to Keeneland
Ward didn't have time for a formal education coming up, but
his intelligence is apparent when speaking to him. He's
articulate, has a thirst for knowledge, and keeps calibrating his
operation to yield maximum
results. Because he's a practical
horseman with experience in all
facets of the game, he decided
recently to centralize his
operations in Kentucky, at
Keeneland's Barn 68 and at the
100-acre farm across the road
from Keeneland that he leases
from Brad Kelley, whose Calumet
Farm is nearby.
Ward still sends his
Kentucky-bred weanlings to his
Ward Ranch in Ocala to develop,
but in a departure from the past
and a move that's distinctly against the grain, he brings his
yearlings back to the Kentucky farm in the fall to break and train.
He started this regimen last year, he said, so he could gallop
them over the forgiving grass fields of his farm to get a better
idea of how they travelled over turf, and also because he could
have access to Turfway Park to breeze them on the all-weather
over the winter--a better preparation altogether for his
2-year-olds for Royal Ascot, he said. He should know, because
he's the master of preparing juveniles in North America to strike
on debut.
Ward noted that training 2-year-olds is an art form and that in
Florida there's an inclination sometimes to "overtrain" a horse.
He said his fastest 2-year-old this year, the filly Jo Jo Air (Scat
Daddy)--a $325,000 Keeneland September purchase by Andrew
Farm and Mrs. Charlie O'Connor that Ward kept in Florida--came
up with a shin after Joel Rosario worked her an eighth of a mile
faster than Ward had wanted on the dirt at Palm Meadows. "It
only takes one mistake," Ward noted. Because of the shin, she
missed Royal Ascot, but Ward is excited that she's back on track
and still maintains that she's the fastest juvenile in the barn--and
that includes the Royal Ascot winner Shang Shang Shang
(Shanghai Bobby). The latter was purchased for $200,000 at the
OBS March sale by newcomer Breeze Easy LLC and is one of two
Royal Ascot winners Ward has had that have exited juvenile
sales--the other was Acapulco, purchased at the same sale in
2015 for $750,000 by M.V. Magnier--but in general he said the
2-year-old sales are too taxing on young horses for Royal Ascot.
"Shang Shang Shang and Acapulco were extremely sound and
trained on," Ward noted, but he said they were exceptions and
that most graduates of 2-year-old sales need some time off after
purchase and are generally not good prospects for Royal Ascot.
With 10 winners and counting at Royal Ascot, Ward has
established himself as a serious horseman on both sides of the
Atlantic. And, yes, Ward is the master trainer of 2-year-olds in
North America, but don't pigeonhole
him there, either. He's had plenty of
horses that have trained on, and that
list includes Lady Aurelia and
Undrafted, along with others such as
Grade I winner Judy the Beauty
(Ghostzapper), a filly Ward purchased
for $20,000 at Keeneland September
2010 who won more than $1.8 million
with over five seasons. Champion
female sprinter of 2014, Judy the
Beauty gave Ward another distinction-
-the first Eclipse Award-winning
apprentice jockey to own and train an
Eclipse Award winner.
Ward's world is in good order right now.
APB: SELCOURT TARGETING DEL MAR
RETURN by Steve Sherack
>TDN Rising Star= Selcourt (Tiz Wonderful), freshened since
airing in the seven-furlong GII Santa Monica S. at Santa Anita
Mar. 24 with a career-best 104 Beyer Speed Figure, is aiming for
a return at the upcoming Del Mar meeting.
Campaigned in partnership by Taylor Made=s Medallion
Racing, breeder Keith Abrahams and Sandra Lazaruk and trained
by John Sadler, it was decided to bypass the GI Beholder Mile S.
in early June in favor of a summer/fall campaign with a long-
term eye on the GI Breeders= Cup Filly & Mare Sprint at Churchill
Downs. Cont. p7

AShe=s doing really well,@ Medallion Racing=s Phillip Shelton
said. AShe never left John=s barn at Santa Anita. She basically just
got a couple of weeks off. Really nothing wrong--John just felt
like she wasn=t 100%, and if you=re going to try to face Unique
Bella and Paradise Woods in a Grade I, we wanted to make sure
that she was 100%. Once we knew that race was out of the
picture we said, >You know what? Let=s just give her a little
break, get ready for Del Mar and hopefully point to the
Breeders= Cup.=@
A jaw-dropping debut winner last February, the chestnut is a
perfect three-for-three during her 4-year-old season, which also
includes tallies in the Kalookan Queen S. Jan. 14 and GIII Las
Flores S. Feb. 18. All six of her career starts have been made
sprinting at Santa Anita.
AShe should have her first work back this weekend,@ Shelton
said. AShe=s been back galloping for the last couple of weeks and
has been doing great. We always toyed around with the idea of
stretching her out, but I=d say at this point that we=ll keep her at
one turn through the Breeders= Cup. That would probably be the
plan. We=ll point for something at Del Mar, then keep our
options open for the final prep before the Breeders= Cup.@
APB: WEST COAST READY TO RESUME
SERIOUS TRAINING by Steve Sherack
West Coast (Flatter)=s Kentucky vacation is nearing a
conclusion.
Last year=s champion 3-year-old colt, second in both the 2018
GI Pegasus World Cup Invitational S. Jan. 27 and G1 Dubai World
Cup last out Mar. 31, will resume Aserious training@ July 1,
reports Gary and Mary West=s Racing Manager Ben Glass.
West Coast joined the Bob Baffert Churchill Downs string prior
to this year=s GI Kentucky Derby, but never recorded a timed
workout during his stay beneath the Twin Spires. The 2017
GI Travers S. winner is currently in light training at Dell Ridge
Farm in Lexington.
AWe left him in Kentucky because he=d been in a box stall since
he was a yearling,@ Glass said with a laugh. AWe wanted him to
have a little R&R before we went back for a serious campaign.
Naturally, we=re hoping we can make the Breeders= Cup, but if
we don=t, we=ll make the Clark and then the Pegasus.@
Any targets in mind for a return spot?
AOnce Bob has him for a while, he=ll tell you where he=s at,@
Glass replied. ABut he=s doing great and we=re anxious to get him
back into serious training.@
West Coast, a $425,000 KEESEP yearling, was also a runaway
winner of last year=s GI Pennsylvania Derby and third-place
finisher in the GI Breeders= Cup Classic at Del Mar.
ROAD TO FASIG JULY SALE GOES THROUGH
CHURCHILL DOWNS by Jessica Martini
After going postward in Saturday=s GIII Bashford Manor S. at
Churchill Downs, a pair of juveniles trained by transplanted
Irishmen will head across the state for an expected engagement
in the following week=s Fasig-Tipton July Selected Horses of
Racing Age Sale in Lexington. John Ennis will saddle Weiland
(Yes It=s True), a 6-1 shot in the six-furlong race, while Paul
McEntee will saddle 30-1 outsider Baytown Glory (Morning
Line).

Road to Fasig Goes Through Churchill cont.
Weiland, who will be offered as hip 547 through the
Paramount Sales consignment at the July sale, is already a stakes
winner under the Twin Spires, having broken his maiden in the
May 3 Kentucky Juvenile S. (video).
AHe=s doing fantastic,@ Ennis said of Weiland, who gave him his
first stakes win in the Juvenile. AI couldn=t be happier with him.
He=s a super nice horse.@
Ennis purchased Weiland for $7,000 at last year=s Fasig-Tipton
October sale and the colt races in his colors.
AI didn=t look at him at the barn,@ the former jockey said of
Weiland. AHe just caught my eye in the back ring. He had a great
walk, was very athletic, he was correct, and he had a great eye.
With yearlings, I think a big thing is their minds, and he had a
great mind. To this day he has a fantastic, fantastic mind. I think
that is a big part of his success.@
Weiland opened his career with a fifth-place effort at
Keeneland Apr. 18. He was 19-1 longshot when he gutted out a
narrow victory in the Juvenile S.
AI=d be lying if I said it wasn=t a little bit of a shock,@ Ennis said
of the stakes win. AHe improved massively from his first start.
He=s a pretty big horse. Once he figured it out after his first run,
he went on and won. It was fantastic.@
When he purchased Weiland as a yearling, Ennis fully expected
to resell the youngster as a juvenile.
AI was buying yearlings myself to get them started at
Keeneland,@ he explained. AAnd if they were precocious enough,
win at Keeneland and maybe sell them then. Or get a good form
on them and then go back to the July sale.@
Regardless of where Weiland finishes Saturday, he will keep
his engagement in the July sale, according to Ennis.
AI own him all myself and whether he finishes first or last, he=s
going to Fasig-Tipton,@ Ennis said. AHe=s a stakes winner already
and it would be great if he went there as a graded stakes winner
as well. But he is going there regardless. This is what I bought
him to do. He=s perfectly sound. He runs Lasix free. He is a clean,
sound, good-looking horse. And there are more yearlings to be
bought in September and this fall.@
Ennis has been training for only the last five years or so and
maintains a small stable based at Keeneland.
AI never have more than eight or 10 horses,@ he said. ASo it=s
hard to get a stakes horse when you only have a small number. I
used to be a jockey back in Europe and I came here maybe
seven years ago and I was galloping here first. And it developed
into training myself.@
Ennis said the July sale is a perfect venue for both buyers and
sellers.
AThe horses of racing age is a super sale for buyers and sellers
because you are getting horses who are safe, sound, and like
Weiland, has the form to go to Saratoga if they want him to,@ he
said.
Weiland=s stablemate Payntermaniac (Paynter) will go
postward in Saturday=s Debutante S. at Churchill Downs. The
filly, owned by Coco Jean Stable, is catalogued as hip 498 at the
July sale.
AShe is 30-1 in the Debutante, but she doesn=t deserve any
part of that,@ Ennis said. AShe ran first-time out at Churchill and
she got beat three or four lengths by a filly [Eyeinthesky] who
just got beat [when third] in the Astoria at Belmont. She is a
correct filly, very, very fast and she will definitely outrun her
odds on Saturday.@
Another European import, trainer Paul McEntee will look for
his first graded stakes winner when he saddles Baytown Glory in
the Bashford Manor. The colt (hip 407), along with stablemate
Baytown Macca (Creative Cause) (hip 408), is catalogued to sell
at the July sale through the Ballysax Bloodstock of McEntee=s
brother, Carl.
Baytown Macca, entered in Thursday=s fifth race at Churchill
Downs, was third in the Kentucky Juvenile S. and McEntee
admitted it was a toss up which colt would be pointed towards
the Bashford Manor.
AI worked them both two weeks ago last Saturday and
Baytown Glory worked a lot better,@ McEntee said. AThen last
Saturday, I had a horse running at Churchill and I brought Glory
over there for a breeze over the track. My brother organized for
him to breeze with three of Dale Romans=s 2-year-olds and he
breezed very well over the track. So I decided to put him in it.@
McEntee acquired Baytown Glory, who RNA=d for $1,000 at
last year=s Fasig-Tipton October sale, privately over the winter.
The colt was seventh in his debut at Keeneland Apr. 25 before
graduating by 2 1/4 lengths at Indiana Grand May 1 (video).

AI had met [Darby Dan general manager] Robert Hammond
who obviously worked with Carl and I met up with him over the
last three or four years that Carl was working at Darby Dan,@
McEntee said. AHe told me there was a 2-year-old that I might
be interested in who was down with Eddie Woods in Florida. He
asked me if I was interested and I said I would go and have a
look at him. I went down to see him on the farm and acquired
him privately.@
McEntee continued, AHe is a really nice horse and when he ran
first-time out at Keeneland, I=d only literally had him a month
and I was just giving him a race to get experience. He got bashed
coming out of the gate and he had a really rough race. Then I
ran him back only six days later in Indiana and I told the jockey
to be very easy on him. So even though the time was slow, he
won it very impressively. He won by four lengths and the jockey
never even smacked him or pushed him. It was only a couple of
weeks after that he was truly 100% fit.@
McEntee said he acquired Baytown Glory with an eye towards
a possible resale.
AIn an ideal world, I=ll normally try to make the sale,@ McEntee
said. AThat=s what I=ve done the last two or three years. I=ve
bought them at Fasig or Keeneland, gotten them going and then
moving them on elsewhere. This year, with my brother going
out on his own [with Ballysax Bloodstock], he and I spoke about
getting a 2-year-old stakes placed and selling him at the July
sale. Normally 2-year-olds do fairly well there.@
Now in its fifth year, the July Horses of Racing Age Sale is a
convenient place for trainers like McEntee to market their
horses.
AFasig is just down the road,@ McEntee said. AI don=t have to
change any of their training plans and they can train up to the
sale. If they sell for what I want them to sell for, then they will
move on to a different owner and if they don=t, they=ll carry on
in their training and future career.@
McEntee, who recently purchased a farm in Scott County, has
been training in the U.S. for the last seven years. He had his first
stakes winner when Lay Line Force won the 2011 Sophomore
Sprint S. at Mountaineer.
AI was over here in the early >90s and I worked for Christophe
Clement for 2 1/2 years,@ McEntee said. AThen I moved back to
England and worked with my dad who trained in England until
he passed away.@
McEntee is a fifth generation horseman and said there was
never any doubt his future was in the racing industry.
AAll four brothers work in the Thoroughbred industry,@
McEntee said. AThe only one of our family who isn=t in racing is
my sister and she works in banking.@ Cont. p10

He added with a laugh, AI suppose she was the only one with a
bit of common sense.@
Should Baytown Glory provide him with his first graded stakes
victory, would it be more difficult to offer the colt at auction?
AThere is definitely an emotional attachment,@ McEntee said.
ABut I=ve just purchased my own farm and obviously it=s all about
doing business. So I would love to see him go on and be
successful for somebody else, to be perfectly honest. And then
reinvest the money myself this fall in September and October in
more yearlings.@

$1.2 million after breezing in :10 flat. The Jerry Hollendorfer
pupil is out of a daughter of GSW Added Asset (Lord At War

NISHA (f, 4, First Samurai--Lily's Joy, by Malibu Moon) has
changed hands a few times via the claim box and was picked up
by these connections for $25,000 out of a winning effort on the
turf here in October for previous owner Bruce Golden Racing
and trainer David Jacobson. Losing the rider at the start of her
debut for this barn on the grass at Aqueduct in December, she
won a muddy main track allowance in Ozone Park next out
Jan. 13 and captured another dirt test there Feb. 8. Returned to
the sod for Belmont=s License Fee S. Apr. 29, she finished
seventh in a strong field and was given a 9-5 chance to return to
her winning ways while getting back on dirt here. Running in the
two path, the dark bay tracked from fourth through a :22.34
opening quarter. Ranging up three wide turning for home, Nisha
forged clear late to win by a length over favored Your Love
(Flatter). The winner=s dam produced a Flashback filly in 2016
and a Jack Milton colt in 2017 and was bred back to that sire.

POSSE NEEDED (f, 4, Caleb=s Posse--Scenic Point, by Unbridled)
missed by a neck in her seasonal bow at Gulfstream Mar. 30 and
was third next out at Belmont May 4. Entered for main track
only and adding blinkers for this one, the 9-5 shot was unhurried
early, caboosing the field through a :22.40 first quarter.
Progressing up the outside to sit third entering the far turn, the
bay closed determinedly down the four path in the final
sixteenth to win by a neck. Shimmering Moon (Malibu Moon)
was second. The winner is a half-sister to Better Now (Thunder
Gulch), GSW, $191,189; and the dam of MGSW Dark Cove
(Medaglia d=Oro). Lifetime Record: 8-2-2-2, $144,590. Click for

WILL CALL (c, 4, Country Day--Vote Early {SW, $230,512}, by
More Than Ready), only off the board twice in nine starts, won a
pair of turf sprints at the Fair Grounds this winter, Dec. 26 and
Jan. 26, respectively. Second in the Colonel Power S. in NOLA
Feb. 17, he was a disappointing ninth after being bumped at the
start of Keeneland=s GII Shakertown S. Apr. 7 and returned to
winning ways last time in the GIII Twin Spires Turf Sprint S. May
4 at Churchill Downs. Favored at 6-5 to repeat here, the bay ran
at the back of the pack through a :22.79 first quarter. Still last at
the top of the lane, Will Call came charging three wide to nail
Angaston (Denman {Aus}) on the wire for a nose success. The
winner has a 2-year-old full-sister named Play On and a 2018
half-brother by Stay Thirsty. Lifetime Record: GSW, 10-6-1-1,

dueled fellow firster Mr. Ankey (Into Mischief) through a swift
opening quarter in :21.67. Still neck-and-neck with that rival as
they hit the half in :45.66, the 2-1 chalk shook free in the lane
and scored a facile 4 1/4-length victory, despite showing some
greenness when drifting into the rail. Ready and Rich (Super

leader Hasta La Byebye (Tale of the Cat) from second through
moderate early fractions. Drawing even on the far turn, the
$450,000 EASOCT buy skipped away in the stretch to win by 3
3/4 lengths. The winner is a half to Awesome Flower (Flower

after being bumped and steadied in his unveiling over this
course Oct. 1 and was dispatched at 2-1 in this second go.
Seizing the early advantage, the bay was pressed through
opening splits of :22.66 and :45.70, but easily shut the door on
his rivals in the lane, rolling clear under a hand ride to register a
nine-length victory. Mikado (Pleasantly Perfect) completed the

Graeme Hall) checked in third as the heavy favorite in her
career bow for Todd Pletcher at Aqueduct Apr. 18 and was
fourth next out in the slop at Belmont May 19. Transferred to
Jeremiah Englehart, she was hammered down to 2-5 favoritism
to get off the mark in this softer spot. The dark bay went straight
to the lead, ticking off an opening quarter in :22.87, and drew
clear in the lane to win by 3 1/4 lengths. Jaded Lady (Shanghai
Bobby) was the runner-up, finishing 9 1/2 lengths clear of the
third-place finisher. Stakes winner Poovey produced a Giant
