He was always there for you. Now it’s timeyou’re there for him. We can help.

231.941.1919 BoardmanLakeGlens.com

1400 Brigadoon Court Traverse City, MI 49686

Our extraordinary staff and incomparable care choices allow seniors to maintain their independence and age in place with dignity in friendly, familiar surroundings. And for those times when you can’t be there for him, you’ll have peace of mind knowing that we are here for you.

Dad has been kind of lost since Mom passed away and with my job, I haven’t been able to spend as much time with

him as I’d like to. During the week I barely get time to ask him how he’s doing, much less get him out and away from the TV for a couple of hours. He even lost his lifelong love of baseball.

Then last winter he slipped and really hurt himself. As always, he was trying to make my life easier by shoveling the sidewalks himself. That’s when I decided I had to do whatever I could to make his life easier and be there for him. For us, the best

option was assisted living and the best choice was Boardman Lake Glens. Now he’s getting the care he needs, eating better, enjoying new friends and feeling ten years younger. Just last week he asked me if there’s a senior softfall league he could join. I’m not sure he’s ready for that, but one thing I do know —with Boardman, we hit a home run!

At Boardman Lake Glens, you have options for making smart choices that will help you or a loved one enjoy a safe and nurturing lifestyle. Our flexible care plans, great food, reliable transportation and other amenities are designed to help our residents and their families enjoy each day to the fullest. And for couples, care can be customized for each person — allowing spouses to stay together in their own apartment even when their care needs are different.

Our dedicated team’s family spirit and our unique approach to care are just two reasons why you’ll love to call Boardman Lake Glens home. To learn more about the benefits

of living in our beautiful community, stop by or call Rose Selkirk at 231.941.1919 to arrange a visit.

Yay! Summer is almost upon us. We can finally celebrate the “real” reason we all live here. Put away the UGGs and The

North Face. Finally! Break out the shorts, t-shirts and sandals. And ladies, book yourselves a much needed mani–pedi. Can I get an amen?

We are so blessed that we actually get to LIVE where others choose to spend their vacations! Welcome back to the sparkle of the Blue Bay as it glistens in the sun, the beach, boating, sailing, picnicking, wine tours, biking, hiking, outside dining and happy hours (my personal favorite). And let’s not forget downtown celebrations, the farmers market, outdoor music, family time and every sun-filled moment in-between.

I GET BY WITH A LITTLE HELP

FROM MY FRIENDS

A special aloha to my friend, Chris Klau, for the amazing shot on the cover! This is the behind-the-scenes reality that you don’t know. He dragged his poor wife Nicole out of bed at an ungodly early hour to capture this shot on a cold day in March (not one of the 80-degree freak days we were blessed with). I’m sure their kids, Casey, age 6, and Jack, age 18 months, were still catching z’s while mom was hanging ten.

My other fabulous friend, Heather Sills, will be wowing you with her dazzling Art Direction. She has passionately taken over the magazine. You have no idea how many hours she spent just looking at fonts! The new logo rocks: The artistic wave subtly gracing the “A” instills a blue BAY lifestyle feel. A fresher, sleeker and more modern artistic look will greet

you page to beautiful glossy color page. I am thrilled the magazine will be designed by a real local. Heather grew up here and knows half the town. And the behind the scenes you don’t know? She is a devoted mom of two—daughter Reagan, age 6, and son Brewer, age 6 months—and she has a day job! Phew.

On that note, let me also wish all the Super Moms who actually find those five minutes of peace to read our magazine a Happy Mother’s Day! You rock… and thank you!

Onto the content…

So inside you will find the favorite departments you have come to love—all this now with an Up-North Flair ... This new issue extends our distribution as far up the Bay as Harbor Springs, so we included a few tidbits from up that way, too. Our features will inspire you to get out and get involved. Stand up paddle boarding is the hottest new water craze. After reading our story, you’ll jump on one of these newfangled boards for sure. As far as getting involved, the piece on Big Brothers and Big Sisters will definitely move you. You will also get to know “How Jeans Went Green,” and what “Backwards Painting” looks like. Enjoy some “Nifty” style, and try a “Go To” recipe from dads who cook!

The best part about summer? Our magazine can go with you anywhere: Take us on your boat, on a hike, to the beach or on vacation! No computer glare, no need for towers, Wi-Fi or cable TV.

With that said: Cheers to living the BAY LIFE! Are we lucky or what?

27 StitchesThis is Robyn Sadowski’s golden year! She turns 27 and her birthday is 7/27. Hence the inspiration for calling her “handmade functional art with a sustainable focus” the whimsical name 27 STITCHES. Plus, she is also a Sassy Seamstress! Her sewing machine will be revved up and ready, adding to the already eclectic mix of stores at The Villages at the Grand Commons. Her store/studio will carry all locally made art, accessories and gifts. Much of her inventory was personally whipped up on her sewing machine right there! Other artists will consign, too, and you will find her in the North end in the new 630 building. May 25th is her Grand Opening.

One-Stop StyleThere’s a new collaboration in town, and it’s your secret weapon to Fabulous! Dawn Campbell of Boutique a la Vie (The Villages at the Grand Commons) has brought her stylish flair to Union Street, right inside the cutting-edge Allure Salon and Spa owned by Shelly and Bob Derrer. You can indulge in the unique experience of getting your “beauty on” Head to Toe! Think Mani, Pedi, Hair, Makeup, Outfit, Jewelry and even Shoes! Now that is FABULOUS! Dawn, Bob and Shelly are all great friends and have talked about this idea forever. We are thrilled they finally made it happen.

TC SCOOPWhat does a 100-pound Ice cream Sundae look like? You will have to see it to believe it! Mark your calendar to make sure you bring your family and friends out to the first-ever TC SCOOP Festival on June 16th at F&M Park, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This fun event will benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters, and it promises to

be a Festival of pure summer FUN! There is a Kid Zone tent with ice cream contests, fire truck rides, face painting, DJ spinning, beach bum mascot

and a whole lot more! Come one, come all and we’ll see you there.

Honk for HarryHarry and Laura Clark have been bringing ‘50s-inspired smiles to our area since 1997 with local treasure THE CHERRY BOWL DRIVE-IN. Now the area is giving back those smiles tenfold. Sadly, Harry suffered an accident in March, and the community has been rallying around his family ever since. Son and daughter Andrew and Arika Clark are passionately taking on the task of still opening for this, their 59th season! It’s a great summer family outing; they commit to never playing a movie stronger than a PG-13 or any that glorify teen drinking or drug use. Here’s a fun fact: The popcorn is topped with real creamery butter and still made in the original 1953 popper! Now that’s vintage. Don’t forget to Honk for Harry as you pull up or just drive by.

Maria Madness! The sing-along craze of The Sound of Music has toured all around the world and brought enjoyment to millions of people. Think the PG version of cult classic Rocky Horror Picture Show. (You know, without the men in drag sporting ladies’ undergarments! Good for some, bad for others?) This is the Clean Cut Family Version of Fun that will have you howling in laughter. You’ll quite simply enjoy the most fun at the theatre you’ll experience ever. Really! It’s coming to The City Opera House on June 23rd, and I suggest grabbing your tickets TODAY. The movie is subtitled with the la la lyrics AND you’re given your very own bag of props that encourage extra audience participation. Costumes are highly encouraged, so pull down Grandma’s curtains or finally channel your inner nun! As one theatergoer said, “It was one of the funniest and most extraordinary evenings of my life.” People, that doesn’t happen every day!

Their challenge was to pass along this olive branch to a couple who could embody this fantastico! Enter Susan and Executive Chef Paul Carlson: Let’s call them the Italian Dream Team! After taking an inspiring trip to Florence, where they delighted in food and wine tours galore, Susan and Chef Paul are Emozionato (excited). Welcome SORELLINASorellina (Italian for “lil Sister”) is the new authentic Italian restaurant coming to the former site of The Bay Leaf on Park Street. Glen Harrington and John McGee, co-owners of Harrington’s By the Bay, are excited to be adding to their restaurant resume with a downtown location. Something’s BREWING! It’s still in the fermenting stages and will be ready in June! But Beards Brewery (can you guess?) will be worth the wait. Coming to 207a Howard Street in Petoskey from Bearded Best Friends Ben Slocum and Peter Manthel, the brewery will be offering four beers on tap and hoping for seven as they grow into their tap shoes. The idea of a brewery had been floating around for a while, and it took a “Roadtrip” from California to Michigan to set it in stone. Last summer, the bearded friends crafted and perfected recipes. (This must have involved a lot of sampling!) Once they felt their beers were “Dry Hopping,” winners onward they went! “We want to be able to share the process with people,” says Peter, “and the brewing area is completely visible behind glass.” Here’s a twist on the norm: They will have B.Y.O.F. (bring your own food). This is Peter and Ben’s commitment to Petoskey’s already vibrant cuisine community. The brewers want to enhance your dining experience, instead of competing against it. Cheers Guys to a long Shelf Life!

Waterfront Wine FestivalVisit downtown Harbor Springs on Saturday, June 23, for an evening of wine tasting, live local music and more at the Annual Harbor Springs Waterfront Wine Festival. Tickets are $15 in advance and $25 on the day of the event. Tickets include an event tasting glass and three wine tastings. Additional tasting tickets are available at $2 each or bundled at a discount of 15 tickets for $20.

Does a Body GoodLocal Traverse City Native Stephanie Zalucha, loves to windsurf, and is also an avid SUPer (Stand Up Paddle Boarder.) This sport has really taken off in a big way with the ladies (let’s face it, we are far more graceful.) But the key is the amazing total body workout this gives. Steph even competed in the T.C. Waterman challenge (a new SUP race in the area.) She had so much fun she is hoping to also take part in the M22 challenge next year. Taking it down a notch, or maybe 3! The other awesome event that we credit Steph for inspiring, actually

happens every week and started in spring of 2011. Maybe you have seen these strange packs of women walking on water? Armed with only a paddleboard and totally rockin a wetsuit or bikini. It’s a local phenomenon and a super excuse for girlfriends to get together and have fun! It only happens on a Wednesday night, and sometimes there are six and sometimes up to 30! Wow! Talk about Girl Power! She extends an invitation to all the ladies out there, check out the Facebook page called Women’s SUP Nights, and join them out on the water!

Marvelous Mom BY KATHRYN ORWIG

“Hi, my mom’s name is Jennifer Orwig and I think she is pretty amazing. This year has been a rough year and yet mom has taken everything in stride. From having to help my younger brother with his anxiety over starting high school and not being able to leave the neighborhood for a month, to working as a full time assistant teacher at Montessori and trying to sell her artwork out of our house. She is always ready to help and is not a stranger to hugs. Mom always knows the right things to say in any situation that comes up and how to tackle it well with grace and wisdom. She is always working so hard and trying to provide a better life for us and now I believe a well-deserved prize and recognition of her efforts should be in order. My brother and I really love seeing mom happy, and I believe that this will make her face light up.” Well said and we agree! Jenny will get a $50 gift certificate for Green Island and 2 tix to a concert of her choice from Interlochen’s Summer lineup.

“It all started as an idea, offer unique gift and jewelry items to people they don’t see in other stores. Then, we came up with the name...”Nifty Things” Everything we buy has to have a certain WOW factor and be unique in its own way. When we started out (2006 in Alden) we had a very small 450 sq. foot store that we ran ourselves. The business exploded from the first day we opened the doors! Later that same fall, we opened in Elk Rapids, and finally in the spring of 2008 we opened in Traverse City.

The stores are meant to create a Sensory Overload to people who visit. Some folks will stay in the store for hours looking at all the “Nifty Things”. Today, vendors literally knock down our doors trying to get their new items on our shelves first! That is another “Nifty Factor”. We get new items way before the market sees them. We have also taken a Leadership position in the add-a-bead bracelet business. We carry most of the top brands and maintain a large inventory in all of our stores. People seek us out knowing

that they will find the perfect bead to add to their bracelets. We have even have custom made beads like our Marathon and Michigan Destination beads. Last year we brought to life www.NiftyThingsOnline.com and now people all over the world are buying our unique products. Today we have three stores and our web site. While we may expand into other markets with our Nifty Concept, we also have some other great ideas that we could do right here in our own back yard! “

Pure Joy A SUMMER NIGHT IN CHARLEVOIX

Summer is just about here, and dressing up for our special night is way more ooh la la. Think strappy sandals, flirty dresses and the freeing experience of dining outdoors. And if you choose Stafford’s Weathervane Restaurant in Charlevoix, you can dial your date up a notch by adding that European flair.

Dining al fresco at the Charlevoix Weathervane is like sitting at a little bistro in a bustling European city where you’re fully immersed in its energy. It’s no surprise that this town hosts the famed Venetian Festival each year. You’ll also find the age-old and trusted Stafford’s hospitality and a restaurant so established that the Weathervane could be called our very own Stonehenge! Impossible boulders make up the walls of the exterior, giving the building its own special identity. The stone-covered building sits on a high perch and overlooks the spectacularly turquoise and sparkly water below of the Pine River Channel. Your view that includes the

water of the Pine River Canal.

MAY/JUNE 2012 | BAY LIFE NORTH 19

famous drawbridge and the electric atmosphere of Charlevoix’s marvelous main street frames the dining experience perfectly, all making this a Must-Go place to eat!

HISTORY

To boast a little of its past before we boast about the food, the restaurant building was originally constructed as a grist mill. In the mid-1950s, it was converted into a fine dining establishment designed by the then-famed local architect Earl Young, who was known for his curvaceous roof lines and flowing architecture! Yep, it definitely has that!

OPEN SESAME!

A huge wooden entrance door greets you, graced on each side and illuminated at night by the 150-year-old street lights imported from Copenhagen. After stepping inside, to the left you will see the impressive bar constructed of shipwrecked planks that weigh more than two tons. (I’m sure that can hold up a few over-served partygoers!) Next you make your way through the elegant dining room with linen-covered tabletops and wooden chairs inlaid with elegant sailboats (a reminder that Yachting Magazine named Charlevoix the number two water port city in the world to live).

Outside we go to Jeff’s Deck, where many tables anxiously await our arrival. The scene is reminiscent of a large, coveted opera box that overlooks the drama of the live show beneath, except this show has a stunning water view, too. You will feel like you’re on vacation, so order a real drink. Some of the specialties of the house are a Charlevoix-Tini, a Lake Michigan Sunset and a Weathervane Cosmo. If you’re a beer lover, they have the local Short’s Brewery Brown on tap!

The menu proudly tells the story of the building and is a classic of tried-and-true favorites highlighted by the shining glory that brings people from miles around the Mitten: The Lake Superior Oak Planked Whitefish. This dish consists of local John Cross Fishery whitefish baked on a seasoned oak plank. It is simply divine, and something that every diner must experience. Perfectly seasoned, its presentation alone is pure perfection! The Battered Whitefish and Chips are pretty darn good, too, and that’s a compliment coming from a true Brit! Don’t rush dinner—the babysitter’s got you covered and what’s another hour when you’re in date heaven with your sweetie? Order another drink, enjoy the fine service and being pampered a little, laugh, take in the atmosphere and then linger over homemade dessert options to die for! A Bananas Foster Bread Pudding? The Pie du Jour? My personal bowl-me-over WOW was the Molten Chocolate Cake. Sit a while longer,

MEET JEN LETT, a local Mom of two (daughter Kayla 12 and son Nathan 7), and entrepreneur extraordinaire who has created a whole new way for us to wear our classic fashion go to on our feet with Jeans Gone Green. The simplest ideas are always the best, jeans go with everything, dress up or dress down and they’re comfortable, just like Jen’s sassy sandals.

The blue jeans on your tush, are very different from Jen’s, hers have a commitment of Good People – Good Things. Let’s call her our Denim Do-Gooder or Dr. Denim as today, through her company; she creates some serious denim therapy for a lot of people.

It all started with the blues! Three years ago, Jen lost her job and decided it was time to pursue something creative. “I came to the conclusion if I don’t do it now, I’ll never do it!” say’s Jen. She tried making a lot of things, but the shoe helped her put her best foot forward! Like most cottage industries, that make it big, she started in her basement (move over man cave.) The Good People – Good Things isn’t just a tag line, it’s a true blue reality that her company lives. She donates to charities such as The Women’s Resource Center, Goodwill Industries and The Salvation Army and in turn receives their unloved and unwanted denim. These are the jeans that were either unsellable in their stores or turned down by their population of needy people. Hence naming Jen, Dr. Denim, she literally breathes life into these discarded blue jean blues. That’s not the end of her Do-Gooder Denim ways either, the newly adopted jeans then go to Grand Traverse Industries, where they provide a job for special needs people in the area who cut, and prep the jeans down to size.

The lovingly cut pieces now make their way to Jen’s busy warehouse in Traverse City, where Leah and Maggie pair them with the perfect shoe partner. The bands are handcrafted to the actual shoe, which isn’t just any old flip flop! It’s an original comfortable surf shoe, and so high end we will call them sandals. Normal flip flops are a few bucks and of throwaway quality, not to be compared at all. Seamstresses and local artisans work their magic from here, and hand place every dazzling Austrian Swarovski Crystal making every shoe a one of a kind signature piece.

Jeans Gone GOOD“I wish I had invented blue jeans. They have expression, modesty, sex appeal and simplicity…” YVES SAINT LAURENT

We all have a blue jean love affair with our favorite pair, and now they can hug your every curve all the way down to your perfectly pedicured toes!

Finished shoes also line the shelves of the warehouse, a real Shoetopia! They even hang in customized wooden crate displays that are hand made by Jen’s dad, Glen. They are shipped to boutiques that carry her Sparkly Sandals all across the country. Not surprising they sell like hot cakes in the warmer states, especially Texas! Making the shoes ever more unique is how you tote your new toe treasures home. You choose your very own patented “Leg Bag,” the shoes go inside, very green, no need for boxes or shipping materials. Jen supports Breast Cancer with a special shoe for Team TaTas in Detroit, and FORCE (Facing Our Risk Cancer Empowered) where portions of the sales go to the charities. Like the saying goes for Cinderella, “Proof that one shoe can change your whole life,” Jen’s success embodies this, while also changing the lives of many others along the way. Jeans Gone Green is not just Jeans Gone Good, but GREAT! Check out www.jeansgonegreen.com or go to Raven’s Child Boutique on Front Street to snag your own fabulous pair!

IMAGINE YOURSELF only 100 yards away from land, but feeling like you are in another universe! You are in a crystal clear utopia where you are literally one with nature. You are experiencing the Zen of meditation—a peace of mind normally found only in yoga. All this while getting an intense core body workout from cruising and relaxing. You won’t even notice that you’re exercising, let alone working your butt off!

Sound amazing? Welcome to

the hot new trend out there

on the water right now. It’s

taking over the ocean from

Maui to Miami, as well as the

lakes, rivers and bodies of

water in-between. Jennifer

Aniston does it, so does

Matthew McConaughey. Hello,

six pack?? Do they both look

sexy or what? Stand up paddle

boarding itself goes way back

literally hundreds of years, but

it was recently thrown again

into the spotlight by Big Wave

Legend and Super Surfer

Laird Hamilton. The cool thing

is Laird is also a dad, and he is

often seen standing in Maui on

boards along with his very cute

kids! If Laird thinks this is cool,

it’s cool!

This has lately become a

worldwide phenomenon, and

hello, we live on a pristine,

brilliant blue bay! What do

you need to know to try it?

Not much. That’s what so

awesome about it! Balancing

on the board works your core

muscles, and the paddling hits

every muscle from your arms to

abdominals and your back. Any

age and any ability can try this;

you don’t need to know how to

surf the traditional way. Within

an hour of balancing with trial

and error, you’ll be well on

your way!

THE LOWDOWN

It’s an expensive sport to get into at

the beginning, but as Todd Mackey,

event director of the largest Stand

Up Paddle Boarding Expo in the

Midwest reminds us, “Once you have

made the initial purchase, there is

no daily lift ticket, no annual license

fee and every body of water is out

there, yours for the taking!” Todd is

also the proud papa of five children,

ages nine to 17 years, and they all

participate because it’s a wonderful

exercise and outing the whole family

can enjoy together.

“We are blessed with clean, clear,

fresh water and the protection of

the bay,” Todd adds. “We are so

fortunate to be able to reside and

play in Northern Michigan!”

Before you dive in feet first, here

are a few things you should know.

The best suggestion is to rent a

board, but be warned! Stand up

paddle boarding is addictive! After

a few sessions, you will want to

brag that you are an Early Adopter

and Cutting Edge, as the sport is

still on the up and up but rising

quickly. Beryl Skrocki is the owner

of Sleeping Bear Surf and Kayak in

Empire, and she has been renting

SUPs since 2006. “You can rent for

1/2 day or multiple days. If people

choose to purchase a board after

renting, we apply 1/2 the rental rate

toward the purchase of a new board.”

Matt Mulligan of Brick Wheels is

the man to see once you are really

addicted! Brick Wheels started to

carry the boards recently because all

the employees had them. Matt will

be competing in The Great Wakes

SUP Race down the Boardman

“Once you have made the initial purchase, there is no daily lift ticket, no annual license fee and every body of water is out there, YOURS FOR THE TAKING!”

A PERFECT East Bay sunrise.

Page 30: Bay LIFE North May/June 2012

28 MAY/JUNE 2012 | BAY LIFE NORTH

River; also, you can cheer him on in the M22

Challenge this summer. Brick Wheels owner Tim

Brick is a generous sponsor of the events. As Matt told

me, when deciding to carry the boards, “Tim said, ‘Are

we going into this sport with one foot or the whole

hog?’” Well, they certainly jumped all in! They rent

them, sell them, demo and teach you everything you

need to know.

If you are inspired to just go out and buy one (Can

we get a kickback? Just kidding!), make sure you get

the right size for your skill level. The longer boards

(12 to 19 feet) will give beginners great stability

for learning how to stand up all the time, but the

maneuverability of the shorter SUP boards may suit

an expert surfer a little better. (Be honest? Are you

really an expert surfer?) Also, here is a curveball for

you: Jeff of Don Orr Ski ‘n Beach Haus told me they

carry inflatable boards!

The length of the board may not be your only concern.

Boards also range in width from 27 to 34 inches.

Obviously, the wider boards have better stability. But

the narrower boards have better maneuverability.

Don’t over-estimate your surfing skills! (This is why

renting first is a good idea!) You also need a leash, just

in case you fall in … you probably will and it’s okay!!

But quite frankly, so you don’t lose that expensive

surfboard, just like the old ball and chain, you want

to keep attached to this! The last thing you need is

your paddle. They can be made of wood, aluminum

or carbon fiber. The general rule of thumb is to get a

paddle that is 6 inches taller than your overall height.

Okay. So what did we forget? Let’s review. Ladies,

you‘ll look like Jennifer Aniston. Men, you’ll resemble

Matthew McConaughey. That should be enough

said! You will be in constant motion, working out

without even knowing it. It’s a non-impact sport that

is MAJOR COOL. You can take along your kids and

have a blast! You will be a cutting edge early adopter,

walk on water and be one with the outdoors!

Oh yeah, and you will sport a Fabulous Tan! (However,

we have to promote the use of sunscreen and urge you

to wear a hat!) Grab a paddle, board and stand up and

go. See you on the water!

“The Moment They Placed You into My Arms, You Slipped into My Heart”

Little Movers and GrooversHooray, your little one is rolling, crawling and maybe even taking first steps! Watching your munchkin become mobile is a huge thrill. Yet after the initial excitement, alarm rapidly sets in. Don’t ever underestimate how fast they are, or what they can into! Here are six areas ways to baby proof your house so you can put your mind at ease.

Outlet and Cord Coverings: Conveniently, these are at the

perfect height for exploring little fingers! (Go figure!) So check that they are all covered to keep your little one safe from harm.

Baby Gates: Baby gates are your BFF for blocking off

rooms or dangerous stairs. If you are on a budget, check with the many consignment stores in our area.

Cabinet Latches and Locks: Latches aren’t pretty, but

they’re essential for keeping cleaners, detergents, etc. out of kids’ reach.

Anchor Furniture and Pad Sharp Edges: Sharp edges

and falling objects are another worry once little ones are on the move. Look at your furniture with new eyes. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

Move Pet Items Out of Reach: Move these to another room

that you can block off (kitty litter, bowls of food, etc.).

Pack up Heirlooms: Little ones use their baby radar to

find the best stuff, and it will break! And trust me, when you put the heirlooms back, you won’t believe how quickly the time has passed.

Free GiveawayLast issue we introduced you to the SnoozeShade. The SPF 50 baby sun blocker for your stroller celebrity Moms can’t do without! Should you let your three-year-old waltz out the door wearing a purple tutu, a polka-dot sweater and green galoshes? Many moms wonder when to relinquish some control over their kids’ outfit choices, and where to draw boundaries. Here are a few ideas.

OUT OF SIGHT OUT OF MIND

Limit the clothing that is visible to your child, and clear out seasonal clothes and shoes. Keep dressing up clothes away with the toys. Keep swimwear with the towels. And if it’s too small, take it out.

OFFER CHOICES

Give you child a choice from two or three outfits that you pre-approve. This way, the child still feels that the decision is his or hers.

BRING BACKUP

Have a mom-approved backup outfit in the car and on-hand. It never hurts to pack weather-appropriate clothes for when they may realize that mom was right!

WHO CARES

If your plan is stay home all day, let this be the day you let them go wild!

PICK YOUR BATTLES

Clothing isn’t really a huge one, and if they have fun expressing themselves, let them go for it!

You won’t believe how quickly it all passes. You will look back at the pictures of snow boots on an 80- degree day with a smile, and it will seem like only yesterday.

While we try to teach our children all about life – our children teach us WHAT LIFE IS ALL ABOUT!

Appy Kids, Happy Mom!What did moms do before smartphones? I don’t know about you, but my little three-year-old can navigate her way through the iPhone and iPad quicker than I can pour a Mommy Time glass of wine! (That’s fast.) Good Apps are the key for keeping them entertained and even squeezing in some learning along the way (instead of just Angry Birds and Talking Tom). Here are a few we found.

“If You Would Just Do What I Tell You I Wouldn’t Have to Be SO BOSSY!”

ADDISON GRAVES, AGE 4

Summers suck for the working mom, especially when you’re leaving tweens and teens back at the ranch with idle time on their hands. While you slog away at work, your kids are popping pizzas in the oven and forgetting they are there, or welcoming friends through the front door and unleashing the dog to roam the neighborhood. Where is Mrs. Doubtfire when you need her? So what’s a working mom to do? You can try to have a list of rules of course, no people in the house, no parties, the usual stuff, and hope they are followed! Try to come home for lunch if possible, the one thing we can suggest is you know your kid for the most part. Use common sense; if you feel they are mature enough, you just have to bite the bullet. It’s one of those “letting go” moments we all despise. Surprise visits to see what is going on are a great idea. Randomly send neighbors or relatives over for a kid check! As long as the house doesn’t burn down (check your insurance policy’s current!) you’ll live through it.

Raising a SMART SPENDERTeaching children the value of money is an important part of parenting. To help jumpstart your financial lesson planning, we’ve rounded up five smart tips.

NEEDS VS. WANTS: I know we are still learning this ourselves! The

ability to distinguish between needs and wants is a money management skill that will help your children throughout life.

ALLOWANCE: Experts agree that giving a weekly or monthly allowance

to children can teach them the value of money and the importance of saving, first hand.

SAVE, GIVE, SPEND: To teach children the different uses of money,

have children divide their allowance into three envelopes: one portion to be saved, a second portion to be donated to charity, and third to be spent that week. (Can the Donate one go back to mom? Just kidding)

MONETARY GIFTS: Parents should be firm in limiting gifts of money to

special occasions such as birthday or holidays.

CHILDREN’S SAVINGS ACCOUNTS: Opening a savings account for your

child can help them understand the rewards of saving and investing. It makes it fun to watch their money grow. (Then you can borrow from them.)

Check with the local banks and see what programs they have in place to inspire them.

“It is amazing how quickly the kids learn to drive a car, yet are unable to understand the lawnmower, snow-blower, or vacuum cleaner.”

Grad Budget BashesCongratulations to the High School Senior classes of 2012! The day has finally arrived, and for parents it is one more thing we have to try to budget (ring, cap & gown, gift). And then there’s the graduation party. Here are a few ideas to enable you to still party while making that mortgage payment!

DATEDon’t hold your party on Graduation day. There’s too much competition and fewer guests will show.

CO-HOSTIf your grad has a super close friend, consider combining the event. This will add up to half the cost with just as much fun.

HOST IT AT HOME It’s not as cool, I know, but explain to your grad the importance of knowing and sticking to a budget! They need to learn this going into the BIG world out there.

DIY Make the food yourself, order platters from Sam’s Club, etc. or have a few family members bring a few dishes. Just ask, and they will be happy to do it.

CREATIVITYAsk every guest to bring something unique or a personal and fun memory of your grad. It makes the event more personal and meaningful.

HEALTHY IS INSummer is here, and so begins

Bikini season for our teens. As

parents, we need to know the

warning signs or red flags. Katie

Halchishick, a former Ford Model,

sadly points out that the number

one wish for all teenage girls is to

be thinner! The misconception,

she says, is “they think what makes

a girl beautiful is skinny with big

boobs, perfect hair, perfect make-

up.” You may have seen her photo

shoot recently in O, The Oprah

Magazine where she had a Barbie

Doll’s impossible measurements

surgically outlined on her body.

She is promoting the positive

message to young girls that

“Healthy is the New Skinny.” She

is a mentor to high school students

about body image issues. Sit down

with your teenage daughter and

check out her website:

BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS, have you heard the BIG Buzz lately? FUNdraising BUZZZZZ. You have the Bowl for Kids’ Sake, with John Cueter of Fox Motors and Bill Marsh Jr. of Bill Marsh Motors competing for bragging rights on May 15th through 17th in Traverse City and on May 18th in Harbor Springs. BIG and new is The TC Scoop on June 16th and let’s not forget the 7th Annual BIG Art Show on Aug 18th in Petoskey. All this to benefit the charity Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Cecilia Chesney, BIGGS director, has a great BIG Heart and is thrilled that the community is so behind her in a BIG Way. She tirelessly spreads the word about how many local children are in need of our help. Right now in Grand Traverse County alone, 13 boys are currently on the waiting list for Male Mentors. Ask yourself the question: Can you help?

Think of it like this. We all have some-one in our life who was instrumental in the formation of our beliefs and our core values, someone we looked up to when the world seemed a lonely place. Did that person allow us to see the tomorrow? A brighter future? And how much of that person’s love and guidance impacts your life today? One-on-one mentoring relationships are so impor-tant to kids who are at risk; they are at the fork in the road. Choose the one road that is familiar, and they will travel further into darkness and despair. They

often need help to choose the more healthy road, and we know it can lift them to places unimaginable. Eighty-three percent of Former “LITTLES” agreed that their “BIG” instilled values and principles that have guided them throughout their lives.

Your undivided time is the most precious gift you can give a child. When it is so unselfishly given to at-risk children who are desperate for a positive influence, it becomes a gift Greater Than Gold! The BIGGS of Northern Michigan are the “Real Life” Heroes that we should applaud. They give from the heart while making cherished memories that are life-changing for the children of our next generation.

The Northwestern Michigan Chapter (BIG-NW) has been around for nearly 50 years in eight local counties. They help approximately 300 children annually, and to date they have successfully helped more than 2,500. “What if we could serve ALL the children who needed our help?” asks Cecilia.

These fundraisers go toward helping make that happen! It costs $1000 to develop

More “BIGS” enjoying quality time with their “LITTLE’S.”

and maintain a mentor-child relationship for one year. The critical years in a child’s development are between ages six and 12. This is when a child learns to avoid risky behaviors and make good choices. The money helps the highly skilled professional staff recruit, train and support volunteer mentors. When compared to the fact that it costs $30,000 annually to incarcerate a prisoner, where unfortunately at-risk kids usually end up, there’s no comparison. Don’t you agree?

Bring your family to all the events, have fun, give and know you are helping a much bigger cause. Of course, the BIGGEST help is to become one of the wonderful volunteers that mentor. How many times in your life can you say that you held a magic wand with the power to make a BIG Difference? Call 231-946-2447 or visit www.bigsupnorth.com and tell our wonderful friend Cecilia that we sent you!

Amy Perrier is an amazingly talented painter. But not just any old painter, Amy’s stunning acrylic work is all meticulously hand painted BACKWARDS. No she doesn’t have dyslexia, which is the first thing that springs to mind, although she did joke she is really good at puzzles. Her art quite simply just begins where traditional art usually ends. Front to back, or Vice Versa.

Her creations are all painted in reverse on glass, mostly on old windows which she res-

cues from barns, and her more modern work in frames. She can literally see the image in her head that she is about to paint, and her visions come from a collection of thirty years’ worth of photographs. Originally from Bellaire, Amy had watched her mom paint as a child and was naturally inspired to follow in her footsteps. She moved down to Florida, frequenting boat docks to paint scenery which covered the rent. After rais-ing two sons she moved back up north to help with her aging parents.

Window of OpportunityWhat After reading our last issue in a doctor’s office Ralph Perrier sent us a wonderful email, complimented the magazine and then made the bold statement: YOU NEED TO MEET MY WIFE! After reading his glowing email, and researching her outstanding work, we agreed, WE DO NEED TO MEET YOUR WIFE! Now you get to meet her too.

ABOVE: Amy Perrier in her paint splattered studio world.

Page 47: Bay LIFE North May/June 2012

TOP LEFT: A close up of Amy’s layering acrylic painting technique.

TOP RIGHT: A reclaimed window with a painted perfect view.

ABOVE: Two more beautiful original framed paintings hanging in Amy’s studio.

ABOVE: Amy hard at work in her studio on another masterpiece.

Amy credits husband Ralph, “If it wasn’t for his wonderful support this wouldn’t be.” When she expressed she’d like a real studio Ralph stated “What do we need to do, to make that happen?” Stepping into her studio, you become a visitor in an “artists multi colored dream world,” right off the living room. Jimmy Buffet songs ring out and put you in a Key West state of mind. (Margarita? Anyone) there are tins full of brushes, rollers, scalpels and a plethora of paint. The wooden floor is splattered with paint, (think Josephs Technicolor dream coat) as is the table, the blow dryer, and even the bottle of Windex! Most eye catch-ing are Amy’s jeans, whimsically covered in a painted palette of every color known to man! (Plan B: if the pictures stop selling, she could retail these and make a bundle.)

All around the studio hangs her work, be-cause the layers of paint actually sit facing the back of the painting, the front some-times is hard to believe it’s real. The imag-es, flat against the shiny reflective surface of the glass, look so “Picture Perfect” they leave you breathless. Layer upon layer quietly sits behind, telling a much bigger

story of color, texture, blending and experi-menting. Some paintings can have up to 27 layers of paint, she loves the way it looks, and is so inspired by texture it has led Amy to branch out to pursue Abstract Painting on canvas. Of her original work, last year alone Amy sold 110 paintings, her creations are very affordable and she finds huge joy that sometimes hers is the first original piece of art chosen to hang in a home. She’s spent many years working the art show circuit and will travel to Lansing soon for her first National Show. Her work is locally acclaimed and has even graced the walls of the Dennos Museum.

Also sitting in her studio is a reject pile! Pictures that didn’t come out as she wanted, no one would be ever the wiser, but she says it’s her Artist Integrity. Amy, you are a true artist with real integrity we look forward to following your success and it was a pleasure meeting you! Ralph, you were right.

Peek your ?Have you Pinned? If you have no idea what I speak of, you need to read on. If you do pin! I’m sure you don’t know how you ever lived without it! It is sparking a worldwide movement of women to be inspired by beautiful things and pin them to their cyber wish board. I say women, but men are allowed of course. You open your own little world of dreams, emotions, places to go, books to read, people to be and create the home you’ve always dreamed of. They visually tell a story of one’s life, your friends can follow you, learning a newer and deeper insight. And I don’t mean that you just got a cup of coffee at Starbucks, or are in a bad mood today! Like “what’s on your mind?” Frankly we don’t care! Use this as a terrific guiding tool to learn what your real Home Style is. Once you try it you’ll be hooked, in a good way. Decorating tips that grow

with your childIs your teenager still sporting a Spiderman room? He long ago outgrew those spidey P.j’s but the walls still remain. (He probably still scales the walls though) For some decorating tips that can be turned on a dime read on:

Paint: Keep it simple: neutral walls will always be in style, and those bright colors you fall for take layer upon layer to get rid of.

Say No to Wallpaper! Wall paper was invented for old homes to hide uneven walls and the ugliness beneath. If you do it, you will regret it!

Fun it up: Get chalkboard paint or dry erase paint, and make a canvas for your kids. (Extra tip, frame around the area so they know that’s the only place OKAY to draw on!)

Removable Wall Décor: Best thing ever! That way when My Little Pony is the new thing and there wall is still Dora, it’s a quick change. Or the girls room has to change to the boy’s room you won’t have a son in therapy till he’s 35! That swears all his problem’s stemmed from a Cinderella room!

“A Home is a Place you Grow Up Wanting to Leave and Grow Old Waiting to get Back to”

Deck EnvyIt’s that time where the outside becomes the extension of our wonderful home. Stoke up the grill, bring out the summer furniture, hang a few white lights and your good to go. Here is a great idea we found for a double duty deck! Parents can play upstairs while the kids make great use of the dead space underneath. Photo credit Judy/White gardenphotos.com

We have been fortunate enough to travel to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico for many years during spring break. Every year when we return I have tried to recreate some of the delicious carne asada steak that is found in almost every restaurant in Cabo. My kids love carne asada and this recipe is one of several attempts at making it.

BRIAN’S GO-TO RECIPE

MEXICAN SPRING BREAK STEAK Flank, skirt or flat iron steak

(My favorite is flat iron)1/4 cup olive oil (I like Fustini’s

Chipotle for this recipe)1/4 cup soy sauce1/4 cup tequila 2 limes, juiced

1 orange juiced4 cloves minced garlic1 Tbsp cumin1 Tbsp oregano1 Tbsp onion powder1 Tbsp chili powder1 Tbsp cilantro chopped

Variation: use dark Mexican beer in place of tequila and Worcestershire Sauce instead of soy and add a little white vinegar.

When using flank or flat iron I like give it several hits with a meat mallet to help tenderize and break apart the muscle fibers. Mix all ingredients. Marinate steak for at least 2 hours. Grill until desired temperature. These are thin cuts of beef and cook quickly. The steak can be served by itself or cut into strips for tacos, burritos, etc.

MEET BRIAN MOHR, awesome dad to Dillyn and Brady and fabulous husband to Erica. On any given day there are culinary delights coming out of this kitchen worthy of Emeril and Wolfgang Puck himself! How did this come to be we asked? Well Grandma Mohr, was the queen of comfort food, his mom, not so much, she had one special dish “Merlin’s Magic Chicken.” Luckily Brian still grew up strong and handsome. (Good genes no doubt) His travels took him to Park City Utah where his roommate’s girlfriend was a Culinary School Trained Chef, and it helped shape his passion, “Eating is an Experience” says Brian. He is raising his kids that way too, no microwave chicken nuggets or “from the box” mac and cheese in this kitchen! The kid’s favorite dishes include hanger steak, blackened salmon, and they even eat anchovies! Brian loves to shop fresh at the farmers market, cooks low fat and low sodium; he has his own recipe book of tried and true delights, he even makes his own spices and dressings! Here are a few Brian Tips: Don’t skimp on the cheese, Clean up as you go and the Food Processor is a must! He owns 3 in different sizes! In the kitchen he is a total perfectionist, but he admits he is a horrible baker! What a relief, we were beginning to believe he was perfect!

BY JAKE ANDERSON

Hmmm. Why do I like to cook?… Cuz I like to eat, Good Food. The better I cook it, the better I like it. I like to please others. When they dig into my meal I watch their faces and hope they like it. I take it very personal. I aim to please. I didn’t start cooking till I met Cindy’s family. (Wife is Realtor Cindy Anderson) Leave it to those Italians. I never knew that kind of food existed. The holidays would start out with breakfast and flow into brunch then lunch. A few snacks after that, then the hors d’oeuvres come out. Massive diner then desert, Constant Food. It’s painful but great. My grandma taught me how to bake pies and cakes. But as far as meals go she was a bit utilitarian. They were good for you… not mm Good! I like to play with recipes not make them. I have not mastered that skill… yet. My favorite tool… The food processor.

I bought the good one and I’m glad I did. That thing works. Some tomatoes, spice, olive oil and Bam… pizza sauce. I have been getting into baking breads

and pizzas. Bread is one of those things you have to be consistent with. No a little this a little that, that’s how you make door stops! (Found that out the hard way!) Sour dough is my passion. My wife wishes I had gotten in to a little cleaner hobby, but likes the results.

Pizzas are fun. My daughter Alex loves pizza night. She invites all her friends over and we have a Pizzathon. Everyone takes a place on the island. I plop down a ball of homemade dough in front of them. They start rolling and flinging doughs into the air. Some make it down in one piece, some don’t. Each girl makes her own style pizza and in the oven it goes. They watch through to glass as it bubbles and drips. When they are done back to the island they go for a PIZZA feast. We all taste each other’s, it’s a great time and memories are made.

JAKE’S PASTA DEL GIORNO (Pasta of the day)

Northern Italian pasta dish we have been cooking for years. It’s our mac and cheese. Easy to fix, healthy and great for leftovers.

1 lb. lean pork Italian sausage or Italian Turkey Sausage, which Jake prefers)

1 1/2 lb. Rigatoni3 Tbsp. chopped garlic

(the more the better!)2 cups grated Parmesan cheese3/4 cup olive oil1 large bunch of green kale, stalks

chopped off and torn (like spinach) Red Pepper flakes to taste Salt and Pepper to taste

Sautee garlic in olive oil add sausage and cook completely. Set aside. Boil water for pasta, first steam Kale and remove, cook pasta In Kale water, drain and add to Sausage and oil/garlic, toss with Parmesan cheese. Add in kale, toss more and add red pepper flakes with salt and pepper to taste. For extra burn have Sriracha sauce on the table and dab a few drops on top. Serves 4-6.

What if the Hokey Pokey is what it’s all about? My personal interpretation of this saying is that “We should take life lightly, enjoy the fun and care about the little things in the world!” This saying lovingly hangs on the wall in Dawn and Rob Shields’ home in their

“Fun Room,” and it is their core family belief.

Dawn and Rob along with their two sons, Jack (15) and Robbie (13 in June), moved up here from Chicago in July of 2010. They moved here as many do dreaming of raising their kids with a better lifestyle. As Dawn so eloquently puts it, “Traverse City was just urban enough, that the kids wouldn’t feel we had plopped them in a little Podunk town in the middle of nowhere!” Both Dawn and Rob are Footwear Importers (and my new BFFs; all their samples are my size! Yaay!!) they work the wholesale end of the shoe world. They are fortunate that their office can be at home. Their only requirement was that home had to be near an airport. Traverse City fit the bill perfectly.

When house hunting, Dawn fondly recalls, “We knew we always wanted to retire to water, but we wanted to find a house that would work for our family now and still work in a few more years when we are old and stairs would be a challenge! So we deliberately picked a rancher!” The house they chose is an older one on Deepwater Point. It has a killer view and comes with its very own private beach!

The first time they actually came to see it, they spent a lot of time just on the beach, as the poor realtor forgot the key. So they quickly became acquainted and fell in love with the view of East Bay, and they were only able to admire the house from afar. (Maybe that was Cindy Anderson’s master plan?) It worked! They knew right away that they wanted to make major modifications. They came from a McMansion in Chicago. This was to be an adjustment, but all the more a great challenge to dive into. The kitchen would need to be

The totally renovated kitchen with a granite counter that is reminiscent of the array of dazzling rocks beneath the shallow bay. Right outside their back door!

TOP RIGHT: The formal dining room toward the front of the house.

BOTTOM RIGHT: The Shields Family on the deck that overlooks their beach and the East Bay. Robbie, Jack, Dawn and Rob.

much bigger, and they wanted a nice big open island. They also knew right away they would totally renovate the existing garage to create more space and make room for their home office. Where the garage sat before, now you find two large bedrooms and a bathroom. A new garage now sits in front of the old one. Their new kitchen is worthy of any large event and has a beautiful view of the crystal bay. The granite they chose reminds them of looking down into the crystal clear water and seeing the colors shining back from the rocks below.

Part of being a family, of course, is immersing yourself in the community around you, and the Shields are no exception. Mom’s taxi service is always at the ready! Robbie is in the Old Town Playhouse Young Company, a budding actor and a gifted singer. Theater has been a love he has

followed since the age of 7, although he was a little hesitant to share this as “the new kid,” worried that he might be labeled as Robbie the Theater geek. The irony is that at the young age of 11, he didn’t realize that we embrace the fine arts here in Traverse City. He kept his talents on the Lowdown, quietly tried out last year for a production and scored a major role! They now applaud him! He also has an endearing love for animals and even donates to the animal shelter. He also is an aquatic kid and sports gills just like a fish! Just kidding, but his mom tells me, “He loves Water anything.”

Jack, on the other hand, has two completely different passions, one in the winter and one in the summer! You will mostly find him at Mt. Holiday, snowboarding the slopes, being a typical teenager and eating Michelle’s famous nachos. So much so that Dawn and Rob supported the nonprofit club by purchasing a Parking Space next

year! His other pastime is sailing, and you will find him trimming the sails and working the winches as part of the High School Sailing Program with TACS.

Rob has been in the shoe industry long enough to drop names that made me drool! He worked as a buyer for Nordstrom for years. On his days off, he catches some rounds of golf; we even booked our photo shoot around it! Good for him. Dawn also wanted to make sure that we gave some awareness to a little known local charity that she does work with. Dawn tells me about “Food Rescue, it’s a part of Goodwill, and they go to local grocery stores and restaurants and collect the perishable foods that would be thrown away. They literally deliver them the same day to food pantries in Traverse City.”

Dawn feels so blessed they are living such the true “Up North” life. “I know it sounds so cliché, but we pinch ourselves all the time. That view right out of your window brings you back to what is important in your life. We truly count our blessings every day.” The other sign that hangs in their home is right in the kitchen, boldly reminding you, “Because Nice Matters!” You certainly are some NICE people.

All Grandchildren are Brilliant, Beautiful and TAKE AFTER THEIR GRANDMOTHER!

Thank You, Barb! By John Gessner

At the Grand Traverse Conservation District, we love our volunteers! Barb Levi is one of those wonderful people.

“Peepers” is a pre-kindergarten program that is designed to foster the exploration of nature in preschoolers. Every Tuesday, preschoolers explore a different seasonal nature theme. Barb, a locally retired schoolteacher, volunteers as the lead educator in our Peepers program in the fall and spring.

Barb has more than 25 years of experience in early education, many of those spent working in the Grand Traverse Area Catholic Schools system. She has a passion for nature as well as a talent for inspiring exploration and curiosity of our natural world in children.

Barb helped start and shape the Peepers program, and has been volunteering with the Grand Traverse Conservation District as an educator since spring 2009. She now has the pleasure of sharing her passion with her own grandson, Hayden, who regularly attends the Peepers sessions.

Her commitment to education, nature and inspiring the next generation of conservation stewards has made her an invaluable resource to the Grand Traverse Conservation District and the greater Grand Traverse community. To find out about all the other great programs, call 231-941-0960 or visit www.natureiscalling.org

Expanding Senior Fun!If you aren’t a member of the Senior Center, you are seriously missing out! It is not just for OLD people! Membership is open to any adult interested in pursuing social, recreational, educational and wellness opportunities. The locations are expanding, too! The original center on Front Street is the mainstay. Recently added locations were Kingsley and Interlochen, and this summer will launch new sites in Fife Lake and Acme. These buzzing places are alive with activities galore, proving there’s no reason ever to be bored in retirement! 231-922-4911

ANSWER: Crooked and crowded teeth are not only difficult to keep clean and properly maintain, they can also contribute to decay, gum disease, and tooth loss. Other consequences could be abnormal wear of tooth surfaces, inefficient chewing, excessive stress on gum tissue and the bone that supports the teeth, and problems with headaches and jaw joints. When left untreated, many orthodontic problems become worse. Early intervention can be less costly than the additional dental care required to treat more serious problems that might otherwise develop. A nice smile is priceless; it can enhance physical appearance, and it can also boost self confidence as it brings the face into better proportion.
