Excitement is building at Ebbett Tauranga, the local dealership for Land Rover and Range Rover vehicles, with the imminent arrival of the outstanding new Range Rover Evoque.
When it was showcased in Melbourne at the Australian International Motor Show in August, the Evoque was one of the most impressive of the 50-plus new models on dis-play there. Luckily for New Zealand motorists, it is due for release here at the end of October.
Available in a standard fi ve-door model as well as a very sharp-looking three-door coupe, the Evoque has already gathered huge interest on both sides of the Tasman.
“In fact, it is enjoying unprecedented enquiry and pre-launch sales for the brand,” says European Vehicle Sales Specialist, Peter Findlay.
Peter is sure this early success is a result of the Evoque’s bold, sophisticated design and clever technology.
“Nothing else looks like it or drives like it. “It is a true Range Rover, but in compact
form.”Range Rover designers have given this
unique new model a more assertive and athletic look, combining the bold exterior appearance with a premium quality interior fi nish. Built from lightweight, sustainable materials, it is also smaller, lighter and more eco-effi cient than other Range Rover models. It comes packed with intuitive technology, including the latest touch-screen, voice control
and state-of-the-art connectivity.There are three models being released here;
the Pure, the Dynamic and top-of-the-range Prestige – all available in either the three-door or fi ve-door variants.
As one would expect, there is a stunning range of colour combinations to tempt buyers and with more personalisation options than ever before, including contrast colours for the roof.
Engines also vary between models. There are two 2.2 litre diesel options, the TD4 and the SD4, outputting 110kW/420Nm and 140kW/420Nm respectively. The Evoque Si4 is equipped with a 2.0 litre petrol engine with 177kW of power and 340Nm of torque. All NZ models are four-wheel-drive and have six speed automatic transmissions with paddle shift.
Fuel economy is also improved in the Evoque, starting at just 5.7L/100km (claimed) for the TD4 Coupe. Range Rover claims the reduced fuel consumption is enhanced by the introduction of electric power-assisted steer-ing, which helps to eliminate wasted energy.
There’s little doubt the all-new Evoque will present plenty of temptation among Bay of Plenty buyers. Peter is happy to provide more detailed information and specifi cations on request. Please contact him at Ebbett Tauranga on the corner of Wharf Street and Cameron Road or see the ad on this page for contact details.

Keeping promises
Great Wall V200 4WD Ute
The Great Wall company is really hitting its stride now with the recent arrival of the new V200 4WD ute at
Ingham-Sears in Totara Street, Mount Maunganui.
So far the Great Wall company has kept its promises about bringing its range of utes and SUV’s to the New Zealand market. They kicked off with the V240 double cab petrol ute in 2010 and then announced they would be introducing an SUV. Sure enough it rolled out a few months later, offering excellent value for money in this competitive segment.
Then Great Wall said they would be upgrading their utes with safer, higher quality machines and diesel engines and within a year that’s exactly what they did. The upgraded V200 2WD ute impressed with the level of features it offered, once again, for compara-tively little money.
Now it is the turn of the four-wheel drives. Great Wall made a commitment to deliver a 4WD version of the brisk selling 2WD ute and ‘hey presto’ – now it’s here and looking good enough to tempt the hard core of ute buyers who want the latest technology and capability to hit the rough, either for work or for recreation.
Business-like machineThe new V200 4WD certainly adds more
depth to the Great Wall New Zealand
line-up. It naturally sports the same smarter looking front end as the 2WD, but under-neath this “no-nonsense” styling is a very business-like machine. It gives the impression that it is well up for handling the workday demands thrown at it by the construc-tion, farming and industrial sectors, among buyers that will fi nd its price and practicality extremely appealing.
It shares all the same interior and exterior features as Great Wall’s 2WD variant, includ-ing an easy clean interior that will take all the muck and dirt that comes with building sites and farms. There is a simple dash layout with a comfortable driving position and supportive seats offering good rear leg room for a work crew or sprawling family. The rear tray area is just the business for carting loads, with a hefty tail gate and easy access and a tray liner is ideal for keeping it looking the part.
Exterior cred is helped by the 16 inch smart fi ve spoke alloy wheels, the new look front end and an appealing, workmanlike profi le that sits comfortably in any setting, while still
polishing up nicely for taking the gang into town. The only interior difference is the easily operated High-Low 4WD buttons, easily punched for dialling up the extra axle when things get sticky.
Appealing featuresOnce underway, the V200 is well capable
of doing what it is intended to do. The test model we drove was only just off the boat, so the engine was understandably tighter, but still had plenty of pull for its size – a 2.0 litre common rail diesel turbo.
Like the 2WD model, transmission is a six-speed manual. That sixth gear is ideal for giving some extra legs to the 2.0 litre power-plant. It also proves invaluable if you punch in the Low range, providing just another ratio to push you through the tough spots without binding up under too low a ratio.
At this price and with these features, includ-ing the simple push button High-Low 4WD (no awkward clunky old levers), means a new Great Wall ute purchase holds a lot of appeal against second-hand options. Most used trucks will also be at least fi ve years old, lack latest common rail diesel technology, may
not have airbags and are going to need some tender care to keep them going.
Like all Great Wall vehicles, it also comes with a 100,000km or three year warranty and a top rate after-sales service and maintenance programme from one of Tauranga’s most well-established dealerships, Ingham-Sears.
Compare the valueIf you are in the market for a second-hand
ute, the V200 may convince you to make the jump up to new – it’s only a few thousand dollars more than a machine that will have many, many more thousands of kms on it – but it delivers you a new ute with honesty and value at a great price. It also fi lls the gap nicely for anyone seeking a ute that simply gets about its business, has enough ground clearance to avoid ripping the diff ’ out and is handsome enough to want to be seen in on the road.
Hitting the pavement at only $29,990, with most new Japanese models now priced well over $40,000, it also means you will have to give some thought to what else you can do with the spare change…maybe use it as a deposit on a Great Wall SUV?
The V200 will not look out of place in the toughest of locations and has the ability to
take the “rough” with the smooth.
The spacious and sturdy tray can take any amount of farm or industrial gear.
No surprises here; the cabin is well laid-out and easily cleaned while controls are simple to use.
The V200 is equipped with a 2.0 litre common-rail diesel engine.

Mike Anderson, of Sonic Race and Machine, in Newton Street, Mount
Maunganui, loves his work. It can be seen in the perfect body lines and
heard in the smooth engine ‘thrum’ of the cars he fastidiously creates.
With more than 30 years experience as an engineer and builder of race and road cars, both in New Zealand and America, Mike has devel-oped an intuitive approach to the design and build process that has earned him a reputation as a bit of a ‘whizz’ among his many appreciative customers.
Mike’s skills have been honed over the years and were enhanced during his six year stint working in the United States. While there, he worked as lead mechanic on Indy Racing League Team Scandia, was crew chief for Riley & Scott Racing and a key member of Beck Motorsports Indy 500car preparation team – among other roles.
He has gained invaluable knowledge in all facets of chassis build and assembly, whether it be
a race car, muscle car, hot rod or straight classic.Mike opened Sonic Race and Machine in 2006
and draws on his extensive knowledge to hand craft unique road and race machines for clients from all over the North Island.
“It’s a very personalised service,” says Mike. “I offer clients a carefully managed design and
build package that culminates in their dream car. And no two builds are the same.
“Each car has a unique look. It can be a modifi-cation of an authentic ‘classic’ or a race car that is specifically designed to match its driver.”
One thing that does stay the same though is Mike’s unerring attention to detail and top rate management of each project. From the first meeting, where Mike sets to work with a client planning the build or restoration process, to the final stages of the project, clients are kept up to speed the whole way with weekly reports and photos.
A current project Mike has on the floor is a ’65 Corvette, which his client wants to look as close to a late 1960s road racer as possible. The origi-nal chassis and suspension have been re-worked, even the paintwork has been left in near original
state, but under the bonnet the engine uses more current sprint car technology.
Another car having the drive train reconfig-ured for its Matamata owners, is a black ’69 Mustang. This car is a good example of how Mike taps into his vast network of parts sup-pliers and other car builders to source the best authentic and aftermarket parts – in this case the custom air intake and suspension design.
Two other memorable restoration projects for Mike have been a tube-frame Maserarri racing car, originally built by New Zealand driver Graham McRae when he was just a teenager and an ’84 Holden Commodore SS – one of only 30 ever built to Peter Brock’s
specifications. Many race car drivers have also come to rely on Mike during
the years, using his skills to not only engineer, repair
and maintain their ‘pride and joys’, but also to upgrade them when needed.
“They might be looking to add more speed, install new brakes and so on,” says Mike.
“So I do everything
I can to make sure that they get the biggest gain for the least dollar spend, no matter whether it’s a large or small job.”
Sonic Race and Machine will also soon have a more noticeable presence on the streets of Tauranga. Mike’s next project is to build a ute based on the classic HQ Holden and use it as his company car.
“What I’m trying to achieve is to build a ute that might look like one Holden would have built as a concept car back in the early 70s, using their huge stock of Chevrolet and Holden parts,” says Mike.
This special ute will be a bench seat, column-change cruiser with long, low straight lines and Chev running gear.
“It’ll have a practical ‘summer- style’ about it, so that you can cruise over to the Beach Hop or just head down to the Mount.”
Look out for the Holden around town this summer and for all the car enthusiasts out there who have been wondering where to find the ideal man to bring their motoring vision to life, look no further – he’s right on your doorstep.
Made to order Left: Mike Anderson ... builder of dream road and
race cars.
Below: This ‘84 Commodore SS
was one of only 30 ever built in New Zealand.
Mike was thrilled to help restore this original Graham McRae built
‘Maserarri’ race car.
