REPHOTOGRAPIC SURVEY OF BERKELEY &SAN FRANCISCO1906 & 2008

Rephotography is a photography process that can require extensivelevels of research and reconnaissance that places the photographer inthe footsteps of those in the past. The act of scouting the locations oforiginal photographs and photographing in a modern context allows fora connection with a specific spot, at a specific place and time. The abilityfor the photographer to be in that historic spot is embodied in an act ofrecreating history. The photographer reenacts history in order tounderstand the present and compare it with the past.

The following project is a visual study that documents original glass platephotographs from a private collection from 1906 and compares themthough survey and photography techniques with existing site andbuilding conditions of present day San Francisco and Berkeley, California.
