Bavarian Crochet Tutorial

Please note: I have assumed in this tutorial that the reader already has a

good knowledge of crochet stitches and terms.

YouTube that may also help. Just search the web for “Bavarian Crochet”.

In this tutorial I am using 8ply 100% wool from Bendigo Woollen Mills in

Classic Rose Pink and Classic Maize.

Warning: There are 101 photos! Yikes!



Let’s begin:

Crochet 6 chain and join with a slip stitch to form a ring.

Row 1: **Crochet 4 chain then do 1 double treble crochet into the ring.

At the end of this step you should have 1 stitch remaining on the crochet

hook.

Then do 3 more double treble crochet into the ring leaving the last stitch

of each double treble on the needle.

Put the wool over the needle and pull through all stitches on needle.

At this point you should have 1 stitch on the needle.

Then do 1 chain to lock the cluster. (This one locking chain is very

important for the next increasing level of Bavarian crochet – it will all

make sense soon!)

Now do 4 chain and 1 double crochet into the ring.

Repeat from ** 3 times.

Row 2: ^^Do 2 chain then crochet 12 double treble crochet into the

locking chain of the cluster. (This is why the locking chain is so important

to remember - pictures 10, 11 and repeating.)

Do 2 chain, then 1 double crochet into double crochet of previous row.

Repeat from ^^ 3 times (4 times altogether).

Take out your favourite scissors, cut the wool two inches long and tie off.

Row 3: Use a contrasting colour.

Join wool between the 8th and 9th double treble of a 12 double treble

group.

&& Do 4 chain and then 1 double treble around the bar of double treble

from the back of the work.

At this point you should have one stitch on your needle, four chain and a

double treble side-by-side, and contrasting wool showing on your side of

the work.

Although I have tried hard to capture in still pictures what doing “double

treble around the bar of double treble from the back of the work”

means, you may still be unsure. This is where YouTube video

demonstrations of Bavarian crochet (particularly this step) can be very

helpful.



Do 1 double treble around bar of double treble from the back of the work

on the next 3 double trebles, then on four double trebles of the next

group, leaving the last loop on the hook of each stitch.

Put wool over the hook and pull through all 8 stitches (to form an 8

double treble cluster), then do 1 chain to lock the cluster. (Locking chain –

remember very important for increasing in the next row.)

Then do 4 chain and 1 double crochet between the last double treble

worked and the next double treble.

Then do 4 chain and one double treble around the bar of double treble

from back of work. At this point you should have one stitch on yourneedle, four chain and a double treble side-by-side, and contrasting wool

showing on your side of the work.

Do 1 double treble around bar of double treble from the back of the work

on the next 3 double trebles, leaving the last loop on the hook of each

stitch.

Put wool over the hook and pull through all 4 stitches (to form a 4 double

treble cluster), then do 1 chain to lock the cluster. (Locking chain –

remember very important for increasing in the next row.)

Then do 4 chain, then 1 double crochet after the last double treble.

Note: All double trebles in this && section are worked around the bar of

the previous double treble from the back of the work.

The 8 treble clusters are on the sides of the work (these increase in

number as the work gets bigger) and the 4 treble clusters are on the

corners of the work (these don’t increase in number as the work gets

bigger.)



Row 4: ## Do 8 double treble in the very next locking chain.

Do 1 double crochet in double crochet of previous row.

Then do 12 double trebles in the locking chain of the next 4 double treble

cluster (the corner of the work).

Then do 1 double crochet in the double crochet of the previous row.

Take out your favourite scissors, cut the wool two inches long and tie off.

Repeat the last 2 rounds (rows 3 and 4) until you have the work at your

required size.
