Youth Week – a huge thank you to Fraser Coast Regional Council & Ti-aro RSL for supporting the Bauple Youth Fest held on 14th April at the Bauple Recreation Centre. We were able to offer a Pool competition with great prizes, a rock climbing wall, a jousting activity and Street Art paint-ing competition. Thanks also to Darren Everard for donating a new Sam-sung Tablet as a major draw on the day. Thanks to Dave for organising and running the Pool comp and Cathie and friends for organising the Street Art comp. A.G.M. 2018 will be held on Wednesday 9th May at 6:30pm. We encourage community members to come along, meet the team and maybe have some input into activities and the future of the Q150 Recreation Centre. Do not let fear of taking on a position to hold you back from attending. Discussions will be held about future activities and the exciting concept of a whole of Bauple Community Support Network that is cur rently on the drawing board. Discussions will be held in the coming months with other community groups on how we can expand the network for the betterment of the whole Bauple community.

Our Assoc. will be supporting the new ‘Loose Change’ trash & treasure stall that will be open every Wednesday from 1:30 – 5:30pm in the Q150 Recreation Centre. Currently there are pre-loved clothes, toys, books & some kitchen appliances. Feel free to drop in when convenient to possibly pick up a great bargain. Donations are always welcome and can be either left at the Q150 Rec Centre or contact one of the executive to arrange collection. A big thank you to Cathie and her team for making this possible. All items will be what you can afford with your loose change. Kids Club/Gymnastic classes/Athletics training/Learning Hub are all going well and proving very popular. Thanks again to Cathie and her team for making these activities possible. Members are continuing to attend the Fraser Coast Regional Council CCC (Community Crisis Committee) forums and training days to help keep our area well prepared for any extreme weather event in Bauple or support for the whole region.

Our management meetings will be held on the second Wednesday of each month at 6:30pm at the Q150 Rec Cen-tre. All community members are welcome. Cheers until next issue. Debbie

eKindy eKindy is a program that Bauple State School is trialling this year with Ethan, to provide kindy level learning to prepare students for Prep. Distance education department supplies everything from class work to art supplies, online web sessions with the eKindy teacher once a week. Bauple School could qualify to be a pod school for an eKindy program to continue into the future. Please enquire at the School Office if you have a child of pre-prep age and are interested in enrolling.

Last term we had a visit from Bruce, the eKindy teacher. The preps and Ethan enjoyed some storytelling, music with Bruce’s guitar, arts and crafts, rice play, Tak Tak and Play-Doh playing. All the kids enjoyed their time with Bruce and look forward to his next visit in Term 2.

Maryborough & District Committee of the Aging

Maryborough & District Committee of the Ageing have a newspaper reading service for people who are visually impaired. The Fraser Coast Chronicle is read daily from Thursday to Wednesday and on Wednesday it is collated onto a C.D. which is then posted to the registered recipients that day. The service is free of charge to local residents. The news covers all areas, information, sports and even funerals and notices. The C.D. can be played on a general C.D. player or even in the car player as well. This would be of wonderful assistance to someone who is no longer able to read a newspaper. Rossendale Tennis Club Inc.

In case you haven’t thought about it - Autumn is a great time of the year to play tennis! It’s also the best time for day tennis if you don’t like going out at night. We’d love to see family groups hiring the courts so everyone gets their recommended 40 minutes a day exercise. Once you give it a go you’ll love the way tennis challenges you in so many ways. Playing tennis has many health benefits including increasing aerobic capacities, lowering resting heart rate and blood pressure, improving metabolic function, increasing bone density, lowering body fat, improving muscle tone, strength and flexibility and increasing reaction times. Besides all the health benefits tennis is lots of fun and a very social sport. The AGM was held on 20th April at the courts and all committee members were re-elected to serve another year. Club is going well with regular Friday night club competition in full swing now the lights are fixed and shining bright again. Coach Matt Watkins is also running the Friday afternoon Hot Shots Coaching Program with the first session of term 2 beginning on 27th April. Please contact Matt on 0417070129 for coaching enquiries. Our club now requires all junior coaching participants have club membership for just $10 a year (for insurance purposes). The first 14 juniors who register will receive free membership this year. Membership forms will be available at the club or from secretary on request. Members receive discounted court hire, have player insurance and are able to access the club ball machine (must be operated by an adult). If you would like to play social tennis on a Friday night, join the club or hire the courts, please contact secretary Mary-Anne Walters on 0438374091 or email: [email protected] . We welcome all newcomers so give it a try. The courts cost $5 per hour per court for members, $8 for non-members. Night hire (lights) cost $10 per hour per court for members and $12 per hour for non-members. Adult membership is $30 and Junior membership is $10 per year. The courts are located at 38 Bauple-Woolooga Road just off the Bruce Highway. BBQ facilities. Tennis racquets are available for use. See you at Rossendale!! An international media sensation –

the butt-breathing punk turtle aka the Mary River turtle In the past week, journalists from all around the world have been swarming to Tiaro Landcare like bees to a honeypot, wanting interviews about this distinctive turtle and what is being done to save it. The BBC, German, Swiss, Austrian, Asian, Indonesian, American and Australian media have all published articles in many languages. Numerous ABC radio stations have broadcast interviews. A national Swedish radio station interviewed one of our Swedish supporters who has volunteered with our project. This media flurry is due to a recent assessment of reptiles that are evolutionary distinct and globally endangered by the Zoological Society of London. The Mary River turtle was listed as number 29 on a global list. This turtle is an exceptionally ancient species from the perspective of its evolutionary history. Scientists have estimated that we must go back approx. 50 million years to find its closest living relative in its family tree. There may have been other species related to it since then, but they have gone extinct. People just love this Aussie punk turtle with its green hair (algae), chin spikes and the ability to breathe through its butt. Surprising to many, only a few individual turtles sport a punk hairdo. The combination of this highly unconventional lifestyle, the green mohawk and that it needs saving, has turned it into an international star. As a result, we launched a crowd-funding platform which is attracting donations from around the world. https://mary-river-turtle-public-fund.giveeasy.org/help-punk-today It is inspiring that people all around the world are rallying around this unique species that lives on our doorstep. Chris from the Sunshine Coast had two designs of fun, punk turtle T-shirts printed to help promote our project. https://mary-river-turtle-public-fund.giveeasy.org/help-punk-today What is happening to the pasture (dieback) on many properties is concerning. While we do not have the answers, Tiaro Landcare has partnered with B & H Rural to bring some pasture management expertise to Tiaro for the Pasture and Weed info night on 1st May. All welcome to attend our Landcare activities and/or meetings. Marilyn Connell Secretary, Tiaro & District Landcare Group Email: [email protected] www.maryriverturtle.com
