Marianne Baughman says when th eworst happens, God blots out fear so you cando w h a t m u s t be done.

That is why she was able to stand up tothe gunman who killed her missionary husband Aug. 31 in their home in Songo, justoutside th e Nigerian capital of Lagos.

Gang thievery and violencein Nigeria areincreasingly common because of the Nigerian currency s ever-declining value, sh e saidyesterday in C ol um bu s. D on al d an d Marianne, born a nd m ar ri ed in Columbus, hadconducted a ministry in th e African nations ince 1956.

The Rev. Baughman, 60. was the preacher. Mrs. Baughman, 56, was the secretary.They raised four daughters there.

And they watched the country's, peaceslowly slip away.

Mrs. Baughman, however, said, I neverdreamed anybody would come to the house,no t in m y w ild es t dreams.

Th e Rev. Baughman went to a windowand called for his securi ty guards. Usuallynoise will scare thieves away. This time sho t rang out. Th e reverend fell back on th e

bed with a wound in his chest , li e was barelyalive. And tlie thieves were break ing downth e d o o r .

Mrs. Baughman said she saw only oneman carrying a gun.

You kil led my husband, she told him. You know, you ar e a very wicked ma n to killa man t ha t came to do you good .

The kil ler told he r to shut up.She showed him where her money-was,

hoping the gang would quickly leave so shecould ge t help. But Ihoy took their time,even tua lly head ing ou t with what was forthem a major catch: $500 in cash, cameras,radios, tape recorders, th e Rev. Baughman sfavorite w r is t w at ch an d Mrs. Baughman swedding ring.
