There are four main phases to our work:

1. The Search The Scriptures Radio Program.2. The nurturing; of the local Christians,3« The medical work.4. Our camp and Retreat program.

We began the Search the Scriptures Radio Program in 1961.We are on the air every Sunday at 10 a.m. over the Western NigeriaBroadcasting Station, We offer copies of the messages/anS.^^-'acorrespondence course in English and Yoruba. (We live in Yoruba-land along the southern coast of Nigeria.) Correspondence studentscontinually increase. At the present time Brother Walter Smithis writing a course on Acts of the Apostles.

The nurturing of the local Christians. There are five localcongregations and six more Church of Christ congregations in theGross River area in Eastern Nigeria, Locally we hold preachingservices — dtlro luwviffals .Ain thoHWS. — once or twice a year.We are always in contact with the evangelists and the congregations,We visit the Cross Rivei^"^Tce a year and supply the Cross RiverBible School (taught by two of our evangelists) with supplies andlectures.

The medical program. We take care of all of the medicalneeds of the local Christians, and the Christians in the East, andalso help those who are not able to meet their medical needs.Every month we treat malaria, fllaria, worms, malnutrition, eyeand ear infections. We have had leprosy patients that we tookto the leper settlement at Abeokuta, fifty miles away; tuberculosispatients that we've taken to the hospital, hypertension, etc.

J>We help all of those who have a genuine need. Presently we .aretrying to give an X-ray machine to the hospital at Otta.V'rKe^'machine has been given to us and funds are now being raised inthe U.S. to get it over here. We have had to take some roadaccident victims ii-O or 60 miles to be x-rayed. Funds for thisproject can be sent to our forwarding agent. Please desigantefor the "X-ray Fund." Dear Friends in Christ:

Two little boys rolled big black tires merrily down the path behind ourhouse. The tires are their "motors". Though their motors are bigger thanthey are and they have great difficulty balancing them they count it alljoy to run and push with all their might. We hear the sounds of their"motors running" morning, noon and night. Since they found these tires"their father said, "they don*t want food again." Their father, Francis, had come in from planting seventy-five tomato plants. Previously, i?heyhad pushed their motors to the land where their father was planting. Theyhad to get almost on top of the crop to see what he was doing, "V/hat isit I have planted?" the father wanted to know. "Timati ni," (it istomatoes,)

As we walk in Jesus* footsteps each day we should count if all joy.Though our taaks are bigger than we are and we have many difficulties weshould run and push with all our might. Sometimes we find the humidity ofthe rain forests saps much of our strength, but we know that our Father isbigger than we are and will help us to live above the insidious climate. As the tires are constantly the boys companions — morning, noon andnight -- so must our goal be always at our side -- the goal of winning thesick lost souls for Our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, Our always faithful Father is constantly at our side supplying our every need.

At this writing there are many who are sick, and we need your prayers forthem -- not only for their physical health but that their spiritual healthwill be strong. We want to tell you about one of the sick:

Bernice, the mother of the two small boys has been ill off and on forseveral years now. Just recently she got much worse so that she couldhardly walk and we brought her here to do all that we can for her. Thelocal doctor at the Otta Hospital could find nothing organically wrongwith her, but her pain is real. We have now found a doctor who is workingwith her, Kie basis of her pain seems to be FEAR, We do know that allsickness is of the devil, and we know that he is attacking her. Herhusband preaches the gospel with pv7oer, A recent message of his was"rejoicing in God always". He told us that we must rejoice not only whenthings are going well but when things are not going well. He knows thathis wife's illness is a trial he must bear.

The pain is very often in her throat, and sometimes her sickness willgrip her jaws and prevent her from speaking. At times she will complainthat ,her. intestines are missing, _,From the belly the siclcness will go upto the chest -- where she complains of pain -- and then on up to thethroat. From there it advances to the head, and the ears become heavy andthe head becomes heavy, and she will complain of knocking and scratching, and many things being done inside the head. From the head it scattersinto the whole body, and in her whole body there is no comfort. This sickness comes upon her in the evening or after she has slept. She hastrouble getting to sleep and even then it may awaken her out of her sleep. She has bad drearas and lack of appetite. She must be encouraged to eat.She complains of tiredness. VThen she gets badly sick, she seems to have alot of fear in her.

John vrites, "There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives outfear, because fear has to do with punishment. The man who fears is notmade perfect in love." Bernice is a follower of Christ, Her husbandloves the Lord. Yet her mother always wants her to offer sacrifices toidols — especially new that she is sick. She has been raised by amother who believes that all sickness can be gotten rid of by appeasingthe gods.

We have been praying for her for some weeks and months now. We know thatGod can heal her of this sickness. Wow we ask you to pray with us thatGod ^d.11 heal her. For we know that "the prayer offered in faith :i^llmake the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinnedhe will be forgiven,' James 5^15. Also, prayer for her mother that shewill know Christ as her personal Saviour.

Please also include in your prayers:

Brother Daniel, whr has prostatism and will enter the hospital soon forsurgery. Though he is over 70 years old, Brother Daniel is young in theLord Jesus Christ, Pray that he will grow in grace and knowledge.

Brother Kudeyinbu, an evangelist at the Ebute Metta church, who is recovering from surgery. Pray tlst he will soon be able to preach again.

Brother Mcaaedu, the escangelist at the Bariga congregation, who is havingdifficulty with a skin graft. Also, please pray for the Bariga Christiansas they are having disputes about laxid»

Brother Francis, who is the husband of Bemide and evangelist at Egan andEgun Tedo. Pray that he will have strength to resist the devil's attackon his wife and that he will have the strength to comfort and help her.

Evangelists Lawrence, John, Felix and David who are preaching the Gospel

Also pray for Don Baughman and Walter Smith as they hold several meetingsin May — in Lagos, Ibadan and Ado Eltiti.

April has been a busy but happy month. Tlie Easter Fellowship was a realfeast for all of us though the attendance, was a bit less than last year.Preparing for the Fellowship and cleaning up afterward kept us all goingstrong. Especially since our chief lianrlyraan, more generally called ourgardner, Emmanuel, became the father of Easter Abiodun on the first day ofthe Fellowship, April 11th. On the l8th Don and Walter Smith left for theCross Elver in Eastern Nigeria for a conference of the Churches of Christat Ekeri. The Lord willing, they return-on the 26th.

Jane and Lisa are looking forward to the close^of school for this year andbeing at home with us from June through August, Judy has just completedher second year at The Cincinnati BibleSeminary and will be living andworking in Cincinnati this summer.

Thank you for your constant love, prayers and letters.

In His Wonderful love,Don, Marianne, Judy, Lisa and Jane

fOiOTES andEWS from

November 7^ 197^

Dear Christian Friends:

"No condition is permanent" is a common slogan on the vehicles of transportation in Nigeria, After spending almost eighteen years in Nigeria,"we

found this to be true when we went to immigration to renew our residencepermit.

We took the permit to the immigration office on September 20th to be renewed, We were told to come back to pick it up as it was "only a formality,"When we returned on October 2nd to pick up the renewed residence permit, wewere told "your quota has expired" and to "write a letter to the Ministryof Internal Affairs,"

We then went to the Ministry of Internal Affairs to ask about the quota andwere finally told to "write a letter applying for a new quota," and "yourfile is lost,"

This letter has been written and delivered to the Ministry on October 26th,We were told to return to the Ministry on November l^th to receive theiranswer. Meantime, we have made contact with a Christian lawyer, EmmanuelUrhobo, who has taken immediate initiative, and is doing everythingpossible for us to remain in Nigeria. PRAY FOR JtRCTHER URHOBO,

WE ASK YOU TO CONTINUE PRAYING THAT WE WILL RECEIVE THE RESIDENCE PERMIT,The Nigerian field is white unto the harvest and the laborers are few.The Walter Smiths are our only co-workers here on the field. The DavidReynolds family were never granted a visa to join us,

WE NEED FOR YOU TO PRAY ALSO THAT WE WILL BE GIVEN A QUOTA, If we receivethis, it would then be possible for us to remain in Nigeria, We have madecontact with Kent Taylor In Ghana and he is prepared to apply to theGhanian government for us to join the work there should it become necessaryto leave Nigeria.

We are prepared to accept God's will in this matter. However, at thispoint, it is difficult for us to see any greater need than the Nigerianfield.

The bahlowo's — witch doctors, superstitions, gods of stone, metal andwood predominate the countiyside. Today, more than ever, the Light andFreedom of Christ Jesus are needdd to bring people out of the bondage ofdarkness.

PLEASE KEEP THE NIGERIAN CHRISTIANS IN YOUR PRAYERS, They are the leavenof God^s love and need daily strength to withstand the pagans and theMoslems,

Your love and faithful support through these many years have brought the-Good News of God's wonderful love to many.

In Christian love.
