The battle was launched on July 31, 1917 and continued until November 6, 1917. In all the Allied Forces had 325,000 casualties whille Germany had 260,000.  The third battle of Ypres was planned for 1916; however, of the Battle of Somme took all of Sir douglas Haig's (British General) attention in war efforts.  

 

During the Battle of Passchendaele, there was a rain storm that people thought to be the worst in 30 years. It got so bad that the mud clogged riffles and immobilized tanks. Eventually, it became so deep that men and horses were drowning in it.

~ In the Battle of Passchendaele, the Allies gained land, but it wasn't the breakthrough that Haig intended. It cost a lot of human lives.~ On August 16th, attack resumed through the battle of mud, but with little effect. They established stalement for another month until an improvement in the weather prompted another attack on September 20th.~All attacks in October failed to make progress. The British finally captured what little remained of the Passchendaele village, so Haig had and excuse to call of the offensive.
