back, when I went to China, it was seen that people were roaming with face masks. I am a doctor by profession, so I had an idea that there was some epidemic like swine flu in the area. On questioning, it was discovered that there was a lot of pollution. I asked them that the pollution had increased a lot, and so are you shutting down the industry? I was surprised to hear the answer to this question. He said ‘we have not stopped the industry, but the target is to increase production by 10 percent’. They are trying to solve the problem of pollution but are not compromising with the progress of the country.

factory due to pollution, then I ask them if this is the only way left to fight pollution that we should strike at the country's economic stability. Not only this, but

with the closure of the factories, there was also scope of corruption generated. There is no doubt that the lead acid battery industry will have to face a bit of vigour due to pollution, but stopping these industries can hurt the country's economic situation.

We know that it can be very easy to stop any enterprise. But it is difficult to start an enterprise and succeed. We should all take the pollution level to zero level in our own factories. I also agree that the battery is not a luxury product but it is a necessity. 80 percent of our country's population is in the villages and they are getting light in their homes through the battery.

These winds have put off thousands of lamps,

Unique Event14th Power-On Fair of the Indian Small Scale Battery

Industry, organized at the International Trade Expo Centre, Noida, has outgrown all the success stories of past. In business term, this fair was the most successful exhibition and technical

seminar of the Indian Battery Industry. Professionals from abroad and foreign workers who participated in the fair, got business and opened new doors of opportunities. Hon’ble Minister Dr. Mahesh Sharma inaugurated the exhibition by

cutting of ribbon on 18th of January, 2019.

Power On-2019, was inaugurated by the Chief Guest Dr. Mahesh Sharma, Hon’ble Minister of

State, Environment, Forest and Climate Change. Addressing the battery entrepreneurs on this occasion, the Hon'ble Minister said that due to pollution, the battery entrepreneurs are facing problems but he was not in favour of this. He also promised to keep their views in the Finance Ministry for a

reduction in battery GST rates. Hon’ble Minister Mahesh Sharma's address has been published on the next page. Many special guests also attended this auspicious occasion. Technical SeminarThe programme started on 17th

January by full day technical seminars. Approximately representatives of all exhibitors participated in it. Technical seminar was launched by Dr. A.K. Shukla and Federation's Guardian Sh. Yashpal Kanotra, President Dr.

V.K. Aggarwal, General Secretary Shri Shanti Kumar Ramsisaria and Battery Directory editor Chandra Mohan by lighting the lamp. Participants and other battery entrepreneurs took full advantage of the Seminars. This time the seminar hall was fully occupied. During the technical session, there were many questions and answers. On Battery Chemical Vanisperse Lignin, Mr. Tim MCNally from Borregaard LignoTech himself presented the presentation. In India, Sh. Harashpal Singh Sawhney of Harsha Industries is an authorized distributor of Borregaard Vanisperse Lignin.

I will definitely bring the issue of GST rate on the battery to the finance minister's notice. I understand that the bright future of entrepreneurs is a dream of our prime minister, and a positive impact of this will be on battery entrepreneurs also and your future will be bright. I would l ike to tell, what our government has achieved in the Ministry of Environment. Earlier, the files of Battery operated vehicles in our area were cleared in about 600 days. Today, the work is done only in 50 to 60 days. Since I took over the ministry, I have cleared about 9 lakh crore enterprises. Our government has been requesting for your suggestions in the context of GST and on every 15th day the GST has been updated the rules modified on the basis of suggestions.

I hope you will make more progress in your venture.

Federation has been trying for the progress of Small Scale Battery Entrepreneurs for the last decade.

There has been a lot of improvement after the Modi government came. Entrepreneurs have got a little relief and now our main goal is to reduce the GST rate on the battery. Federation estimates that if the Modi government comes back, the GST rate on the battery will be reduced from 28 percent to 18 percent. Some people tell me that business has reduced due to GST. I tell them that I do not believe this thing. I say to all to change yourself. Those who have changed themselves and are moving with GST, their growth rate has increased. I'm also one of them. All of us need to connect to GST so that the government can earn Revenue and move on the path of progress.

say that world-class batteries can not be made in our country. You just increase your quality with knowledge. Many facilities and discounts are available from the government on exports. Now the Government has increased the purchase from SME sector to 25% in all government departments. But many people still can not take advantage of it. Many subsidies are available from the government, but many small entrepreneurs do not want to fall in the paperwork. Many people think that the subsidy money should come in their account just on a phone call. This is not possible. We all have to do a little paperwork. I have taken advantage of many government schemes like Capital Subsidy, Rebate of Registration Charges, Electricity Exemptions and GST Subsidy etc. There are difficulties in the implementation of the schemes but it is not that the Government has turned away from you. So go ahead.

micro, small, medium and large battery entrepreneurs. There is a lot of demand for power storage at the moment. In its supply, the lead acid battery is at the forefront. Many people talk of lithium-ion batteries, but their current usage in electric vehicles is not suitable because there are still many problems in recycling etc. in these batteries. The main component of the lead acid battery is the lead, and one particular thing is that the lead from lead acid batteries can be recycled approximately 99.99 percent. This feature is not in any other battery technology. Lithium-ion battery can never be substituted for acid

batteries. Addressing Hon'ble Minister Dr. Mahesh Sharma (Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change), Dr. V.K. Agrawal said that they hope he will take some concrete steps for the interest of the lead acid battery entrepreneurs, by cutting down the GST rate and giving relief to the small business entrepreneurs and consumers of the country. Still, GST on Lead Acid Battery is 28% which should be lower. Small battery entrepreneurs are unable to understand why the GST rate has not been cut even today. While lead acid batteries are mainly used for solar, e-rickshaw, rehariwallas etc., It is hoped that some concrete steps will be taken on these topics.

Reform the Body, Reconstruct the Mind, Regulate the way of Living, then,

the Country will become automatically Strong and Prosperous.

For example, in the town from where I come from, there is a lot of work in the handloom and we consider the one year's borrowing time in the handloom market as cash trade. This can help you understand how much trouble they will have to face. Now, the e-rickshaw battery has helped our business a lot. Later on, electric vehicles will also come. Some people say that lithium will come for electric vehicles, they are wrong. Lithium battery has many drawbacks. It can not be accepted in large scale. Its recycling is still unclear. All the lithium batteries that have been used so far have been kept in the form of junk, but these are not only junk but are like bombs that can explode anytime.

Generating Employment in the Country

Expression of responsibil ity towards nation is clearly visible in Sh. Ramrichhpal Kansal. He said that we also work for our country. Our objective is to provide jobs to the young people of the country. There are about 75 employees in the Pentagon. The employee here is trained in such a way that if one leaves the company, he can start a new business himself and provide employment to three or four persons.

Addressing to problems of the consumer is foremost after the quality of the product. This is key to the success of any company. The main factor is the service. Satisfying and making the consumers happy is also one of the main objectives of the Pentagon. Through the medium of distributor and dealer, every consumer can send his problems to the owner. Apart from this, the consumer can also contact the toll free number and e-mail. The Pentagon

is cautious on protecting environment from pollution. Every person connected to the battery, whether he is a distributor, a dealer, or a product manufacturer, is indirectly improving the environment of the country. Use of battery has resulted in lowering consumption of petrol and diesel. Today, e-rickshaws and battery operated cars are on road and these have helped in controlling atmospheric pollution.

Pentagon Launches 54 Month Warranty Battery


In its 18th year, Pentagon organizes big meeting of Distributors and Dealers.

Starting with only 5 people, the Pentagon Batteries today has made its entry in almost all the

districts of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and in many cities of West Bengal. How is the work done by honesty, hard work, truth and perseverance to reach the peak of success, this is best illustrated by the Pentagon Batteries of Hapur. Pentagon Batteries has completed its 17th year and on 27th February at Hotel Crowne Plaza, Surajpur, Great Noida, it held a grand meeting of Dealers and Distributors. In this event, about 400 dealers and distributors have made their presence. The general secretary of the West BJP unit, Sh. Satyendra Sisodia, the Chief guest Sh. If we manufacture one product, we have to depend on others for other products. What will be your expectation from such other products? You will expect top class quality. Are you willing to purchase bad quality product for selling your bad product? You must think that you will purchase top quality product and also sell top quality product. When we purchase a TV and get 5 years warranty, but we expect that it should be usable at least for 10 years. Why is this mentality not for the battery? We will build this mentality for the battery. People demanded that the Pentagon should give more than average number of month's warranty battery. Pentagon has launched a new range of Pentagon battery keeping in view this demand. battery line, which promised so many things but did not implement them. This caused dissatisfaction between consumers, distributors and dealers. As a result they could not succeed. The Pentagon battery is very much different of these companies. The founder of the Pentagon Sh. Ramrichhpal Kansal and his son, Managing Director of company Kamal Kansal remain firm on the truth and sincerity. They do whatever they say. At the beginning, when they made the battery plate, they took the decision to use selenium alloy, although their gain was only 50 paisa per plate but they did not care and made plates at less margin which became very popular. This is the result of their selfless decisions that this company is on this height today.

Tomar said that the entire Pentagon family is very much a compliment. We both came in the battery industry in the same year 2002. One of the key features of Sh. Kamal Kansal ji is that he has always kept developing his production process and always used latest system and new machinery. 1. If we look at the cost, the lead acid battery technology is the

most suitable. But if we see the energy density of this technique, then it is 35Wh/Kg meaning that for driving car for 1 Kilometre, 6 Kg of battery weight will be required.

2. Car running on lead acid battery can not be compared with a car running in internal combustion engine.

3. Zebra battery works only at high temperature of 245°C and is not suitable.

4. Metal hydride and lithium secondary battery are low cost and require 2-3 Kg battery weight for commuting 1 Km.

5. Zinc air battery requires 1.5 Kg weight of battery for commuting 1 Kilometre but its recharging is a problem.

Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cell

Polymer electrolyte f u e l c e l l i s m o s t attractive fuel cell. Hydrogen and oxygen gases are used in this cell. Specific energy o f t h i s p o l y m e r electrolyte fuel cell is found to be 33 times more than the speci f ic energy of internal combustion

engine. Specific energy of internal combustion engine is 1KWh/Kg where as for polymer electrolyte cell, it is 33 KWh/Kg.

Now we are familiar with capacitor, electro-chemical capacitor, battery and fuel cell. Power density and energy density of these are shown in graph-1 on next page.

In the present time, it is necessary that we make super battery for cars which can enable electric vehicles to run in the same way as they run on internal combustion engine so that atmosphere become pollution free.

Universal storage of Lithium

Lithium is generally available in natural form in minerals of Spodumene (LiAl (SiO3)2) and Petalite (LiAlSi4O10). Main sources of the mineral are in Bolivia, Chile, China, America and Argentina. Table-2 shows Lithium chemicals available country wise.

Available information indicates 32 Million Lithium store in the World. As per a famous newspaper of US, USA today, demand of lithium is to go up to 70,000 Metric Tonne by 2025 due to increased use of electric vehicles. Several big countries have announced to stop vehicles running on petrol-diesel by 2040. In electric vehicle, cobalt metal is even more important than lithium. Following types of battery cathodes are available for electric vehicles:-

1. LCA (Lithium cobalt aluminium) 2. LCO (Lithium cobalt oxide) 3 . L M N C ( L i t h i u m n i c k e l

manganese cobalt oxide) 4. LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate)Cobalt is important for cathode in

any lithium battery. So availability of

cobalt has to be taken into account. Availability of cobalt in the World is estimated at 7.53 Million Metric Tonne. Democratic republic of Congo is topmost in cobalt availability. Of the total cobalt availability, 58.8% is in Congo only.

Congo is a middle African country and is facing a lot of legal problems. Due to these problems, there has been uncertainty in price of cobalt. Cobalt price was at 20,000 dollars per ton in 2015 which has gone up to 1,00,000 dollars per ton. Due to this uncertainty, scientists are looking for other options to replace cobalt.

Nickel-Zinc BatteryThough lithium battery can be

universal in future but this technology is lacking in safety and recycling. Joseph F Marker in famous Science magazine of US has written about Nickel 3D Zinc battery. He claims that this battery is a good substitute of lithium battery.

We have to consider energy component and power component in electric vehicles. Battery works for energy component and capacitor works for power component. Battery stores

It is common practice to add chemicals to positive and negative pastes to improve the performance and life of

batteries. For example we add 0.8-1.2% of Barium Sulphate to the negative paste mix of all batteries. Similarly 4BS (Tetrabasic Lead Sulphate) is added at 1-3 % level to positive mix. Both act as nucleating agents. i.e they act as nucleation sites for growth of crystals

Both of the above are not soluble in water and remain in the paste as discreet solid particles (separate entities). If we have large number of such nuclei the reaction sites are more and the resultant benefits are enhanced.

structures. Therefore lead sulphate can deposit on barium sulphate particle (or nucleus.)

Barium Sulphate particles act as nucleation sites for crystallisation of Lead Sulphate during discharge. For example during cranking when a large current flows , large number of Lead ions are released suddenly .This creates a situation of super-saturation i.e the lead ions remain in solution and are not readily converted to lead sulphate as fast as lead ions are produced. In the absence of barium sulphate this results in sudden voltage drop and the engine may not crank ( called Coup de fouet or whip-lash effect ). When barium sulphate is present, the particles act as nuclei and help in faster precipitation of Lead sulphate. This avoids build-up of lead ions and a higher voltage is maintained. Cranking is facilitated. Thus when larger number of barium sulphate particles are available, the crystallisation of lead sulphate

This gives more NUCLEI and surface area and reactions proceed in a better manner.

We need sophisticated equipments like COULTER-COUNTER to carry out particle size analysis. Screening through sieves and weighing the residue and material left on different sieves is another method.

But, a practical method is to carry out SETTLING RATE TEST

Settling Rate TestWhen the particle size is smaller

the settling time is more. Two or more brands can be compared in this manner.

A study done on indigenous and 2 imported brands, Barium Sulphate showed imported material to be 5 times slower in settling. This shows that this material will give more nucleating sites for Lead Sulphate to deposit on the Barium Sulphate nucleus during discharge- viz cranking. The voltages will be higher. The dip in voltage that normally happens during cranking will be less. `Whip- lash’ effect will be less.

Similarly we need to compare the particle size of 4BS brands available. This can be done when two or more brands of 4 BS are available. Choose the finer one which has slower settling rate. Jinkeli brand of Chinese origin or SureCure made by HAMMONDS, a well known US supplier of battery chemicals are found to be finer and yield more number of nuclei per unit weight

Determination of Settling Rate

Equipment Required:1. Balance of sensitivity graduated

0.5 g and capacity about 200g.2. Graduated Measuring cylinder

with Ground Glass stopper, 250 ml capacity -3 numbers

3. FunnelProcedure-Weigh carefully 25 g of sample and

transfer it to a clean 250 ml graduated measuring cylinder with glass stopper through a funnel.

Add water through the funnel so that the sample is completely washed down into the measuring cylinder. Make up the volume to 250 ml mark.

Remove the funnel, close the stopper, shake well for one minute for uniform mixing and keep it on a table and allow the powder to settle. Observe the line of separation between the clear supernatant liquid and the settled BaSO4 after 15 minutes on the graduated cylinder and note down the reading. Report the settling rate as number of ml at which the line of separation is observed. This is an empirical method used for comparison between 2 or more brands.

Values: The higher the value, finer is the particle size and the better it is. The finer particles take longer to settle.

Tetrabasic Lead Sulphate; 4 PbO, PbSO4; 4 BSThis product has a long history.

Since several decades it is well- known that Tetrabasic Lead Sulphate,( 4 BS for short) , when present in positive paste makes a strong skeleton during curing which in the long run prevents shedding and creates higher porosity. The life of battery is also longer. However implementing the same faced following hurdles

1. High temperature required in paste mixing (70⁰C- 80⁰C)

is faster and higher voltages are maintained, facilitating cranking.

This behaviour emphasises the importance of particle size and the number of particles of barium sulphate available and not per se the quantity of barium Sulphate added. Each particle acts as nucleation site.

For purpose of easier calculation, it is assumed that the particles are spherical and all of uniform size. The conclusions drawn are valid since we are interested in the order of magnitude and not actual number.

This table shows number of particles available when 1 g of BaSO4 is in powder form of 8, 4 and 2 micron sizes. It demonstrates the comparative increase in the number of particles/ nuclei when the particle size is decreased from 8 micrometre ( microns) to 4 and 2 microns. i.e a fine powder can be 70 or 220 times more effective compared to a coarse powder . The finer material works far better than a comparatively coarser one

Given below are some tests to check the particle size of chemicals which are insoluble in water or acid examples: Tetrabasic Lead Sulphate, Barium Sulphate. The smaller the particle size of these chemicals, the larger the number of nuclei available for reaction per unit weight. Carry out SETTLING RATE TEST to choose from 2 or more types.

Particle Size of Raw Materials

While we make positive and negative paste for Lead-Acid battery plates, both soluble and insoluble chemicals are added in the paste. Examples of insolubles are Barium Sulphate and 4BS. These chemicals should have the smallest particle size as we can get. It should be in the finest state of division as possible/available.

The number of particles per unit weight is what matters. There will be more number of particles when material is fine. [viz. particle size is smaller].

Yashpal Kanotra described him as the main pillar of the Federation of Indian Small Scale Battery Associations and wished for his happy long life. Sh. Mangeram Bansal started Bansal and Bansal in Kanpur, Gadarianpurwa for making of battery plates and battery in the year 1983. Battery plates and Batteries were made by him for 33 years, up to 2016. In the year 2017, they started the Lead Smelting Unit Swastik Enterprises, which is still operational. In Kartikeya Trading started for trading in plastics and coal, Bansal and Bansal, Swastik Enterprises, the three brothers Sh. Mangeram Bansal, Sh. Anil Bansal and Sh. Of course for long life batteries, 4 BS is highly recommended, particularly for VRLA positives and other industrial flat plate positives

4BS Seed Crystals to make positive paste with smaller particle size- A breakthrough .

PENOX ,GMBH of Germany were the pioneers who invented that 4 BS seed crystals of sub-micron size could be blended with oxide at 1-3 % level. This avoids all the 4 problems associated with 4 BS as shown above. The 4 BS crystals produced during paste mixing and curing are smaller in size and give AH capacity equal to conventional 3BS. The seed crystals were shipped as a stable suspension to prevent agglomeration and formation of larger particles. Due to transportation logistics, the material is not sold in India. Penox serves many countries all over the world and helps them with all required expertise. Penox does not sell the material in a powder form.

Later many others developed 4BS seed crysta ls o f micron size in powder form ; notably SURECURE of HAMMONDS and CUREBON of JINKELI of China and many others.

Hammond Lead productsHere again, the settling rate test

can be advantageously used to find the relative fineness of the 4BS material. Using the finer product gives more crystals per unit weight and results in a final product of smaller size and easy to form.

Hammonds has shown that positive paste with 1-2 % 4BS can be used to get a product which are smaller in size and easy to form giving higher capacity ( see figure above)

Conclusion: While choosing additives which are

insoluble and in powder form, use the finest product available in the market. Use the SETTLING RATE TEST to evaluate and compare 2 or more brands. The effectiveness will multiply many fold when particle size is smaller.

micro-battery industry which is going down. According to him, PE separator came in scrap batteries is also a problem because the Lead smelting units are extracting lead by washing. Bansal is worried for this. Small furnace Entrepreneurs wash away the PE separators and throw scraps in Rivers and drains or in empty space along the river basins or roads, thereby increasing the amount of lead in the water of river-drains and the river nalla. They also get choked. PE Seperators, extracted

from battery scrap does not decay and no matter how much the wash, the particles of the lead are present inside it. The administration should make some plants for the disposal of the scrap PE Separators. From the very inception stage, Sh. Mangeram was active in the Federation. He participated in most of the meetings and contributed to the discussions. The thanks giving work on the completion of the meeting is always handed over to him. Sh. Sushant Bansal, son of Sh. Less Price and More Profit

Md. Jameel Ahmad, who came from Amroha and Sh. Vinamr Gupta of Sri Hari Electronics looked happy and satisfied with the Pentagon battery. Sh. Gupta is connected to the Pentagon batteries since the Pentagon started making the battery, i.e. from the year 2012. Sh. Vinamr Gupta says that the quality of the Pentagon battery was the same as that of bigger battery companies. If there is a replacement needed, the battery is changed immediately without any dispute. I sell their battery in my city. Even after the GST, Pentagon battery price is less than that of bigger companies

price. Sh. Kansal gives us profitable margins more than what we get from other companies on the battery. The behaviour of Sh. Kamal Kansal and his staff is very good.

Sh. Nitin Jaiswal from Bareilly, Mohammad Hifzan of Raunak Battery from Bijnaur, and Mohammed Shamim of Maaz Battery were also impressed with the Pentagon battery. They said that the Pentagon battery was very good. It is the only battery that they sell without any question. Honda has started preparing for Electric Vehicles

Japanese auto major Honda will use hybrid vehicles as intermediates in the next two years in India before going for full electric vehicles (EVs) as it expects setting up of supporting infrastructure such as charging stations to take time, according to a senior company official.

The company, which is present in India through a wholly-owned subsidiary, aims to follow the government's push for environment-friendly vehicles by driving in models with green technologies.

A hybrid car has more than one source of power. Usually, it combines a conventional combustion engine with an electric motor to run the vehicle.

"In India, we will follow the EV direction set out by the central government. EV is surely the way forward for mobility technology and we expect that with government's initiative, energy sources will shift to more renewable ones in next few years," Honda Cars India Ltd (HCIL) Senior Vice President and Director Rajesh Goel told PTI.

"Till such time and also till the development of suitable charging infrastructure in the country, we feel that hybrid vehicles can be considered as good intermediate technology in electrification initiatives. Accordingly, we will begin our electrification journey in two years with hybrid technology," Goel said.

The company sells just one hybrid model Accord Hybrid in the domestic market. Currently, not many auto companies in India are keen to introduce hybrid models as under the GST regime, such vehicles have been put in the same category as big petrol and diesel luxury cars, attracting 28 per cent rate with a cess of 15 per cent.

Globally, Honda has been at the forefront of technology development for environment-friendly vehicles.

We should move to Electricity or Battery based vehicular system:

Vice PresidentThe Hon'ble Vice President Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu has called for adopting a public transport-centric approach to decongest traffic-choked cities and combat growing vehicular pollution. He observed that our cities have been witnessing an undesirable shift from the use of public transport to private vehicles.

‘The average two-wheeler and car ownership levels in metropolitan cities which were 112 and 14 per 1000 population in 1994 are expected to grow to 393 and 48 respectively by 2021. This would mean 53 million two-wheelers and six million cars in the next 15 years in metropolitan cities,’ he added.

Speaking at the 25th Foundation Day event of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) in New Delhi today, he said urban transportation solutions like the metro rails have the capacity to act as driving forces to take India’s quest for sustainable urban spaces to fruition.

Lauding the DMRC, Shri Naidu said that it presents a blue print for development of metro services not only to the other cities in India but also to a number of developing countries. Pointing out that urban transport was leading to growing air and noise pollution, he said that it was estimated to account for about 25 percent of the greenhouses gases worldwide and spending more time in the polluted atmosphere was adversely affecting the health of the people, the Vice President said and added that the need for clean urban mobility cannot be over emphasized. Referring to the deleterious effects of global warming and climate change, he said “we need to swiftly move from fossil fuel based automobiles to electricity or battery based vehicular system”.
