A bit of History

• The Bat-man first appeared in Detective Comics #27 in May 1939.

• Batman was created by artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger.

THE ORIGIN

• A family outing to the cinema ended in tragedy for young Bruce Wayne. Walking homeward, Bruce, his father, Thomas, and mother, Martha, accidentally ventured into Gotham City's notorious "Crime Alley" and were accosted by a mugger. Not content merely to rob the wealthy family, the hoodlum - whose identity was "never determined" - shot Dr. Thomas and Martha Wayne dead before fleeing into the darkness. As he knelt beside his parent's bodies, Bruce swore to avenge them. After the police arrived, Bruce was comforted by Dr. Leslie Thompkins. Dr. Thompkins and Alfred Pennyworth helped arrange matters so that Gotham's Social Services would not take Bruce into care. In this way, both Dr. Thompkins and Alfred enabled Bruce to realize his dream of becoming a crusader against crime.

THE VOW

At age 14, Bruce embarked on a journey that took him to every continent as he sought to learn all the skills he would need to keep his vow. He studied criminology,

forensics, and criminal psychology, and learned from man hunters and martial artists, mastering every fighting style. In time, Bruce forged himself into a living weapon to wage

war on crime and injustice.

The journey to becoming Batman

• On his return to Gotham, Bruce stalked street thugs as a plainclothes vigilante. Beaten by the very people he intended to protect, he barely survived his first night out. As he sat bleeding in his study at Wayne Manor Bruce knew that he had to first strike fear in the hearts of his foes. Just then, a bat crashed through the study window, giving Bruce the inspiration he needed. Establishing a secret headquarters in the caves beneath his mansion, Bruce became Batman, a Dark Knight to protect Gotham and its citizens from vice and villainy. Alfred Pennyworth remained his confidant, tending to injuries and offering sage advice - whether requested or not!• Batman became an urban legend, a cautionary tale that sent shivers

through the city's underworld. This Caped Crusader found a friend in Captain James Gordon a Gotham cop who didn't approve of Batman's methods, but appreciated the results of his nightly crime fighting. Batman's Rogues Gallery grew to include a host of bizarre criminals, such as the Joker, Catwoman, Two-Face,Bane and the Penguin.

super powers. If you had to label him with a super power, however, it would be dedication. He never quits, he never stops working to pursue his dream of saving the people of Gotham. He trains his body, he hones his mind, he works tirelessly to inspire good.• Dedication is rare today. Many of us cannot stay

focused on one task for more than 20 or 30 minutes. If you want to inspire people, you’re going to have to give more than that. Choose your mission, and go after it with everything you’ve got. Granted, you’ll need to rest, you are only human. But Gandhi did not inspire people by committing 20 minutes a day for a few weeks to his cause. It was a lifelong pursuit. We shall have to do the same

You must be Truly Incorruptible “As a symbol I can be incorruptible, I can be everlasting”

If you want to inspire good, then you cannot be a hypocrite. In ‘The Dark Knight’ (2008) Harvey Dent was meant to be the symbol of good for Gotham, but he allowed himself to be corrupted and became the very thing he fought to end. Batman, on the other hand, never faltered. He was not perfect, but the world doesn’t need you to be perfect (you’re incapable of that). It needs you to practice what you preach. Our world has become cynical and skeptical of anyone good. Politicians, religious leaders, athletes, and other leadership roles in society are full of people who fell, and fell hard. Drugs, adultery, theft. If leaders are to inspire good, then they must live rightly. And if you hold true to your beliefs, there is no reason you cannot inspire others either.

It’s about the ACTION you take. It’s about how you live your life every day. Taking action instead of

just talking. Anyone can talk.

You are defined by what You Do

You must learn to face your fears

Bruce takes the symbol of the bat one of his fears and uses it as his guise to prey upon those who prey on the fearful. He takes his own fear head on, overcomes it, and makes it into one of his greatest strengths. Without facing his true fears, Bruce Wayne isn’t able to become Batman.Yes, his journey is a frightening and a painful one. But, in truth, the alternative is far more frightening to contemplate.(That of giving into one’s own fears)It’s like real life. How often are we scared to face our fears? And how often does not facing our fears lead to far greater pain long term?I would say, almost always.So do your best to be like Batman. Face your fears head-on, take action daily, and, if you’re a goodhearted and genuine individual, it will all pay off.

You Will Deal with Failure

• Batman definitely experiences failure. He loses friends and dear ones, he gets physically beaten up, is shunned by society on many occasions. But after each failure, he picks himself up and keeps working to inspire and save Gotham.

• Thomas Edison once said, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” We often allow failure to get to our heads. It makes us feel inadequate. The truth is, if you never fail it is because you never try. Inspiring people is not easy, but don’t give up!

You Will Have to Sacrifice“You’ve Given these people everything.” “Not everything, not yet.”

Throughout his career as the Batman, Bruce sacrifices his body, his fame, his reputation, his chance at a normal life. He loses his loved ones, his fortune, his mansion, and more. But he makes the sacrifice, because he fights for something worth fighting for. His final act of sacrifice, I believe, inspires the rebuilding of Gotham.
