The chequered flag waves for last year’s Bathurst 1000 winners Garth Tander and Will Davison, chased all the way by Jason Richards. It was Tander’s first win at Bathurst since 2000, and you can see him through the windscreen already looking for his team to celebrate a ‘Great Race.’

Year after year, Australian motorsport journalists are forced to ask the same, obvious questions each October.

Over the past seven years, the most popular question has been “Can Greg Murphy’s record lap time get beaten?”

I spoke to Murph about it on the Saturday of the 2007 race. His response was “You’re not going to ask me about that too ...”

Another regular Bathurst question taht gets thrown at the drivers is “Would you prefer to win Bathurst or the championship?”

As time goes on and the average age of the field comes down, the ‘championship’ seems to have become more important to the majority of drivers.

That is the answer that people will generally give – especially if they haven’t won Bathurst.

Last year, Will Davison took his first win in The Great Race, paired with Garth Tander in the #2 Toll Holden Racing Team Commodore. In a casual conversation I had with him a week after the event, he said that he didn’t quite understand what it meant to win Bathurst – until after he did it.

What he was referring to was the level of attention that was thrust on him in the days after the race. He was blown away by the hype, the flattery and the major focus that the event creates. He is no longer just ‘Will Davison’ – he is ‘Bathurst winner Will Davison.’

In my opinion, the championship has definitely become more important in the past decade. But more important than Bathurst? I don’t think so.

This is Australian motorsport’s day in the sporting spotlight. It is the biggest motor race we have. It is The Great Race.

If you’re lucky enough to be at Mount Panorama this weekend, make sure you check out the Speedcafe Cafe, located in the merchandise area. Stop in for a coffee, buy a Speedcafe t-shirt, and you might just see some familiar faces there too!

BATHURST NEWS

V8 Supercars’ chief tyre man says that teams and drivers

must be smart with their Dunlops – or face Bathurst disappointment.

Dunlop’s V8 operations manager Kevin Fitzsimons says that of all tracks – and all V8 races – Bathurst is the circuit that requires the teams to be smart, rather than greedy in their chase for speed.

Fitzsimons, pictured right, told Speedcafe.com.au’s V8 Race Guide that the teams should avoid pressuring the tyres below 19psi, and not put too much camber on the front wheels.

“Damage to the tyre’s case seems to be more prevalent below 19psi,” he said.

“There are new testing machines in Japan that are able to do a lot more comprehensive testing than what we’ve had in previous years.

“The issue is over-deflection – the teams have to be careful – not to too much camber, not too low under the pressure.

“19psi is the minimum we’d like to see, if we could. They’ll be guys who will run them at 17 and

a half and 16 and a half but it’s just too low on a full tank of fuel with the cars banging over kerbs.”

Fitzsimons says that the teams and drivers are both accountable, with the key message being that they must not be too aggressive – both from a driving and set-up point of view.

“It’s the usual story – you can’t be over aggressive,” he said.

“I was talking to a driver recently, and we were talking about camber. If you go there and put a lot of camber on the front

wheels, you’ll never get it off.

“Guys will say that it is hard to steer across the top of the mountain in the middle sector. The easiest thing to correct that is to creep up a bit on the camber, but if the car is half a second slower across the mountain across a 20/25-lap stint, that means you’ve lost about 12 seconds. Compare that to the time you’d lose if you have a tyre go down and you have to make a pit stop – 12 seconds doesn’t seem like a lot ...

“If you really think about it,

nobody is passing from The Cutting to Forrests Elbow anyway. It’s just too risky.

“Go back 10 years, the speeds up and down the mountain aren’t that much quicker, but the cars are just so fast across the top now. They’ve just got to think about it.

“They have to make sure they get their fuel tank run out of their tyres. Otherwise, you’ll be bashing your head against the wall.

“It’s a massive disadvantage to be doing additional pit stops ...”

The Toll Holden Racing Team has rewound the clock for the 2010 Supercheap Auto Bathurst

1000. The factory team will compete in the same livery that it did in 1990 – the first year it raced

at Bathurst – and coincidentally, the team won that race ....

Race Guide

After taking victory in the L&H 500 at Phillip Island, TeamVodafone’s Craig Lowndes and Mark Skaife head to Bathurst keen to improve on previous results at the Mountain.

The duo drove together in 1998 and 2000 for the Holden Racing Team but finished sixth on each occasion. However, their win in the L&H 500 has pushed them further in front in the record books of the ATCC/V8 Supercar Championship Series. The victory now moves Skaife to 88 race wins and 40 round/event wins, while Lowndes sits second on the list of most races won (75) but has moved past Allan Moffat to take third on the all-time list of round/event wins with 32. Lowndes now sits only behind Skaife and Peter Brock.

Defending Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 winner Garth Tander will need to win his third Bathurst crown if he’s to keep alive his chances in the $2 million V8 Supercars Grand Slam.

The Toll Holden Racing Team ace won the first of four ‘Slams’ by dominating the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide but will have to win Bathurst and be the top point-scoring driver at the Armor All Gold Coast 600 and Sydney Telstra 500 to collect the prize. Tander and the entire Toll HRT crew will be celebrating the team’s 20th anniversary at Bathurst this year (it was formed in 1990) in addition to marking the team’s first Bathurst crown in the same season. Both HRT cars will feature a retro, black and white paint scheme paying tribute to HRT’s first Bathurst win. Tander himself will also be aiming for history. Having taken pole position in 2008 and 2009, he is aiming to become just the third driver in the race’s history after Allan Moffat (1970-1972) and Peter Brock (1977-1979) to take three successive pole positions.

Dick Johnson and Jim Beam Racing will mark an important milestone at Bathurst this year – the 30 anniversary of Johnson’s collision with an errant rock that launched him into the nation’s sporting psyche.

Having mortgaged his house to build a brand new XD Falcon, Johnson was leading the 1980 Bathurst race and had just put former winner Peter Brock a lap down in the early stages. However, he found himself faced with a huge rock that had accidentally been rolled onto the circuit, which he hit and therefore destroyed his car. A tearful Johnson appeared on television and viewers flooded Channel Seven’s switchboards offering donations to help get him back on the track. He duly did in 1981 in a new car built using the funds raised by the public and the Ford Motor Company and went on to win at Bathurst.

There are four drivers making their first start in the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 this year – this equals the record for the smallest intake of first-timers in the famous race’s history.

James Moffat, the son of four-time race winner Allan (who won his first Bathurst crown 40 years ago in 1970) will be the headliner of the four in the #6 Dunlop Super Dealer Falcon with Steve Richards,

while Kiwi Ant Pedersen will drive one of two wildcard entries, the #27 Fujitsu Falcon BF with Damian Assaillit. The other two rookies will drive together as Geoff Emery and Marcus Zukanovic pair up in the #44 National Directory Distribution Commodore. It is the same ex-Sprint Gas VE Commodore driven to fourth place in last year’s race by Greg Murphy and Mark Skaife. The last time just four rookies attempted the race was 2005. It’s a marked contrast from last year when 14 rookies were involved.

Rock Racing’s Glenn Seton returns to Bathurst this year after missing last year’s Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 and is the most experienced driver in this year’s race with a total of 25 previous starts.

By making his 26th start he will move to equal sixth on the all-time Bathurst starts list, drawing level with Dick Johnson, Allan Grice, Larry Perkins and Graham Moore and now only will trail Jim

Richards, Peter Brock, Colin Bond, Bruce Stewart and Bob Holden. Seton is a three-time runner-up in the race in 1987, 2003 and 2004 and also a two-time pole-sitter (1994 and 1996). He made 23 consecutive starts between 1986 and 2008, a feat only topped by six drivers in Bathurst race history. He and Jason Bargwanna finished a delayed 20th in the L&H 500 at Phillip Island.

There will be an amazing 16 second-generation drivers due to line up on the grid for the 2010 race whose fathers have also competed in the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.

Of those, only three – Mark Skaife, Steve Richards and David Brabham – have won the race, while Richards is the only second-generation driver to have won the race after his father Jim. That fact goes

to show that Mount Panorama certainly doesn’t respect bloodlines! The full list is below: • Steve Owen (#1 TeamVodafone Commodore with Jamie Whincup, father Mal competed in 1979) • Shane Price (#3 Centaur Commodore with Tony D’Alberto, father Drew is a former class winner) • David Brabham (#4 IRWIN Falcon with Alex Davison, father Sir Jack famously stalled on the grid in 1976) • Steve Richards (#6 Dunlop Super Dealer Falcon with James Moffat, father Jim won the race seven times) • James Moffat (#6 Dunlop Super Dealer Falcon with Steve Richards, father Allan won the race four times) • Glenn Seton (#11 Rock Commodore with Jason Bargwanna, father Barry won the race in 1965) • Steven Johnson (#17 Jim Beam Falcon with Marcus Marshall, father Dick won the race three times) • Warren Luff (#18 Jim Beam Falcon with James Courtney, father Ian finished ninth in the 1997 V8 race) • David Russell (#19 Mother Falcon with Jonathon Webb, father Geoff finished sixth in 1984) • David Wall (#21 Fair Dinkum Sheds Commodore with Karl Reindler, father Des finished 13th in 1993) • Ant Pedersen (#27 Fujitsu Falcon with Damian Assaillit, father Paul competed in the 1998 2-litre race) • Mark Noske (#30 Gulf Western Oil Commodore with Nathan Pretty, father Tony finished ninth in 1987) • Greg Ritter (#34 Fujitsu/GRM Commodore with Michael Caruso, father Graham made seven starts) • Jack Perkins (#47 Wilson Security Falcon with Tim Slade, father Larry won the race six times) • Paul Dumbrell (#55 Bottle-O Falcon with Dean Canto, father Gary made two starts in 1980 and 1981) • Mark Skaife (#888 TeamVodafone Commodore with Craig Lowndes, father Russell finished 13th in 1976)

Regardless of whether a Ford or Holden takes pole position for this year’s race, a new record will be created.

Both makes have 19 pole positions in the race, so whoever can snatch pole for the 2010 race will be the first manufacturer to score 20 pole positions. In terms of race wins, Holden leads Ford by 26 to 17

with last year’s race being a ‘red-wash’ for Holden as Commodores filled nine of the top 10 finishing positions.

Jack Daniel’s Racing’s Todd Kelly will celebrate his 31st birthday on Saturday October 9 at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.

The 2005 race winner is making his 13th start in The Great Race and will be joined in the #7 Jack Daniel’s Commodore by young Victorian Dale Wood. Last year Kelly finished eighth in partnership

with brother Rick, while Wood finished 14th in partnership with Jack Perkins.

Aussie IndyCar ace Ryan Briscoe returns to Bathurst this year to drive with Bundaberg Red Racing and is looking to have his first actual drive on race day in the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.

The American-based Sydneysider made his debut on the Mountain in 2006 with Jim Richards in a Holden Racing Team Commodore. However, he did not get to drive in the race itself after Richards

crashed out in the first stint. Briscoe finished third in last year’s IndyCar Series and will move to Walkinshaw Racing’s sister Toll HRT operation to share a car with Will Davison for the Armor All Gold Coast 600 a fortnight after Bathurst. He won the Gold Coast IndyCar race in 2008 and is one of only three winners of that race – John Andretti and Scott Pruett the others – that have also competed in the Bathurst classic.

Interesting Fact: This year’s race is the 50th running of Australia’s best-known motor race. First held in 1963 as the Armstrong 500 after being moved from Phillip Island, the event has been held every year since, firstly over 500 miles and then 1000 kilometres since 1973. There were two races held in 1997 and 1998, one for two-litre Super Tourers and one for V8 Supercars, with both counting in the history books – thus, 2010 is the race’s 50th running.

REVIEW Race 17, L&H 500 Phillip Island

Old Dogs have biteLowndes and Skaife add another win to their bank

The L&H 500 at Phillip Island looked like it was set to be a TeamVodafone demonstration.

While the team did take the win with Craig Lowndes and Mark Skaife – the most experienced driver line-up in the field – it looked like the only car that would stop them from success would be the sister Vodafone Commodore of Jamie Whincup and Steve Owen.

In the final stint, Whincup’s car developed a vibration in the front bumper which caused damage underneath the car, forcing the entry to pit and drop well down the order.

While the team got to celebrate another endurance win, it could have been so much more ...

Mark Winterbottom and Luke Youlden finished second in their Orrcon Steel FPR Falcon. While the pair didn’t have the pace to race with the leading TeamVodafone Commodores, they were easily the best of the rest. The result has thrown Winterbottom right back into title contention after a couple of average rounds in the mid-part of the season.

Third place went to Team BOC’s Jason Richards and Andrew Jones. After an issue with a wheel at the team’s first pit stop, the squad rolled the dice with its strategy – and it paid off. The #8 Commodore roared up the field, taking third place and proving that Richards can never be discounted in endurance mode.

• Extreme slow-motion cameras will also be in use in pit lane and various locations across the top of the mountain – capturing every little flex and twist, the full stress and strain of V8 Supercars and crews going at full tilt.

• On-screen information will see 3D CADCAM take viewers inside the cars and a computer-generated graphics system will track cars around the circuit.

• Host area garage is a full working display of a team set-up, including a full racing car from Supercheap, a drive train and a pit boom. Pit reporter Mark Larkham will be based there, and in his regular Dick Smith Tech Centre, to explain the inner workings of a V8 Supercar. Larkham will even have a small camera of his own, known as “Pokey Cam”, to get into places on a V8 Supercar that you may never have seen.

• Television production team of 315 air-lifted to Bathurst from all over Australia and New Zealand to bring together the best experience in motorsport television for Seven’s coverage.

• Coverage being broadcast in 130 countries across Australia, New Zealand, India, Pakistan, the Middle East, throughout Asia, the United States, and across Europe and North Africa.

• Matthew White and Neil Crompton will anchor Seven’s coverage along with Aaron Noonan in the commentary booth. Mark Beretta, Mark Larkham and Grant Denyer will follow the drama in the pits, and Tom Williams is back at the mountain this year to capture the colour and personalities involved in the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.

• A new one hour special – Battle of Bathurst – is a look back at some of the old Bathurst footage and heroes of the Mountain. Mark Skaife and Mark Larkham relive memories of The Great Race. Coming from pit lane on the Friday night before the big race on Seven (with a re-broadcast on 7mate on Saturday), the special will also capture the racing teams’ preparations for the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.

• Seven’s coverage is led by Seven’s Head of Sport, Saul Shtein, Executive Producer for V8 Supercars Television, Murray Lomax, Senior Producer for V8 Supercars Television, Simon Fordham, and Senior Director for V8 Supercars Television, Nathan Prendergast.
