JUNE 2011
Mathematics staff have finished, and met the deadlines, the
massive task of completing Semester 1 reports. PHEW!!
The Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) will be held
for the 34th time on Thursday 4 August 2011. Your child is
invited to enter this internationally recognised competition
through their school. Believed to be the largest annual event on
the Australian education calendar, with more than 40 countries
participating each year. The competition aims to be accessible
to all students from Years 3 to 12, not just the mathematically
gifted. There is an emphasis on problem solving, a valuable life
skill, and the questions are designed to be fun for the student.
Year 11 Extension 1 Mathematics Lauren Irvine ex-
amining the tangent to the curve on the smartboard.
Over 1,000 students share the prizes and around 50% of partic-
ipants qualify to receive a Certificate of High Distinction, Dis-
tinction or Credit. All other entrants in the competition receive
a Certificate of Participation or a Proficiency Certificate. All
students are also provided with a detailed report showing how
they performed on each problem with wider statistical rank-
ings.
The competition costs $5.50 and payments will be required as
soon as possible to the front office. See Mr Allan for further
details.

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…
By Lauren Inwood
At the end of last year a small group of year 10 students were
given an opportunity to work with Dr David McKinnon from
Charles Sturt University and learn about Astronomy. Early
this year I was presented with an amazing opportunity to work
with Dr McKinnon, and a few of his colleagues to help
analyse an open star cluster called NGC 2215.
It all started through email exchanges between myself and Dr
McKinnon. I then received several emails from people in-
cluding Mr Michael Fitzgerald – a PhD candidate at Mac-
quarie University, Mr Rob Edwards – an astronomy teacher
in Canada, and Bailee and Matt – two of his students. Then it
got down to the hard work. As a group we analysed the clus-
ter and took measurements for around 200 stars. Slowly, via
emails and giant spread sheets our work came together into
tables and graphs comparing various aspects of this cluster.
I was very excited to have Mr Fitzgerald, Dr McKinnon and
Ms Lena Danaia – another member of our team – visit the
school last Tuesday. It was really interesting to finally put
faces to email addresses and chat about future plans for the
project. Our next step (or maybe it is a giant leap) is to pub-
lish an official scientific paper on this cluster. While there
have been a few papers previously published on this cluster,
the best result so far analysed roughly 20 stars and estimated
the distance away from earth to be about half of our measure-
ment! I am looking forward to the publication of our paper
because it will bring new knowledge to the scientific commu-
nity.
For me, it is absolutely amazing to be part of what Mr Fitzgerald
has termed ―cutting edge stuff‖. To be given opportunities to
communicate with people on the other side of the world while
talking about stars on the other side of the universe is, quite liter-
ally, out of this world.

more tree guards.
Logo Competition Results Recently we had a competition inviting stu-
dents to design a logo for our committee. We
received 14 excellent entries. The winner was
Emma Warburton from Year 7 who will re-
ceive a CD voucher. The runners up were
Georgia Browett who incorporated a motto and
gave us that idea in her design and Guiseppe
Pantano for the words ―We Care‖ which we
will incorporate into a stylised version of Em-
ma‘s design . They receive canteen vouchers.
Congratulations and thanks to everyone who
entered, you will all receive a lolly pop!

News from the Principal’s Office
Geoff Hastings
Campus Principal
A very quick report in this newsletter as it is full of
the wonderful achievements of our students and the
initiatives of the teachers to give them a rich learning
environment.
The commitment of the students and teachers at this
school never ceases to amaze me. Teachers have been
working very hard to ensure that semester reports are
complete and available to students and parents before
we go on holidays. The reports will be given out at
our commendation ceremonies.
Teachers have also been entering awards and I have
signed something like 5000 different awards over the
last two weeks. I am very proud of the way we recog-
nise student learning through our award system.
Astley and Mulvey Cups were another wonderful ex-
ample of the students and teachers working together
for a common goal. Watching the tie against Orange
and the visit to Dubbo, you could not help but admire
the tenacity, determination, skill and sportsmanship of
our representatives. Although we were unsuccessful,
the games were close and held in the right spirit.
The performance of our dancers at the Western Re-
gion Dance Spectacular was nothing short of excellent
and the whole spectacular a tribute to students of pub-
lic schools in this area.
You will see the stories of the Doon school below and
may have heard of the success of our 9/10 debating
team. Who are into the regional final.
Finally, on a personal note, can I wish the Bathurst
High community continued success over the next six
months as I start my time as a university lecturer in
Ontario, Canada. Mrs Dunshea relieves as Principal,
Mr Hamilton as Deputy Principal - Middle School,
Mr Baillie as PDHPE Head Teacher and Mr Lawler as
Year 9 Adviser for the next six months. I look for-
ward to returning in 2012 after a very
cold, white Christmas.

it is available for $15.
On Tuesday 7th June Mr Browning took the visiting students from the Doon School in India out to Evans Crown and Flat Rock for
the day. The weather on the day was very cold but all the students both visitors and hosts had a great time. The traditional sausage
sizzle gave way to vege burgers for six of the visitors but they all enjoyed the damper and golden syrup. The students also played a
game of cricket while the lunch was being prepared.
The photos show the students enjoying some rock hopping at Evans Crown.

News From The Senior School
Jim Browning
Deputy Principal, Senior School
The Central West HSC Seminar on Thursday the 16th June at
Charles Sturt University was very successful and 40 Bathurst
High students attended the day despite its clash with Day 1 of
Astley Cup.
Year 12 students should be revising their notes and studying
hard for their Mid Course Exams which commence on the 1st
August. The exams will run for two weeks.
The Graduation Ball has a change of evening and venue for
this year. It is going to be held on Friday the 18th November,
2011 at Panthers. This venue will be able to accommodate the
170 students and their friends and family much better than
BMEC.
Preliminary reports were handed out on Friday the 24th June. If
a student has not received their report they are to see Mr
Browning.
Due to Astley Cup, Preliminary students were issued with
their Senior Agreements this week to allow them the choice of
not being at school in their study periods. TAFE students with
14 units will be allowed to drop a school delivered subject if
their TAFE attendance and progress is such that they will be
awarded the TAFE delivered 2 units. Other students who have
successfully completed the Outdoor Recreation Course will be
able to do this as well. Preliminary students must have com-
pleted 12 units in order to be awarded a Preliminary Record of
Achievement.
There will also be a motor vehicle use letter included. Senior
agreements will need to be signed by both student and parent
and returned to Ms Burt. There are some students who will not
be given the privilege of a Senior Agreement due to behaviour
or attendance reasons.
Year 10 students received their reports at this week‘s Commen-
dation Ceremony and it was pleasing to see so many Principal
Awards given out due to quality work and cooperation.
The Indigenous Dance Group had its first session last week and
what started out as a Year 10 initiative has now expanded to
include students from Years 8 and 9. The group will meet every
second Thursday (Week A) for periods 2 and 3 at Bathurst High
Campus. On the other week the Dance facilitator Ms Jayne
Evans will work with Kelso High Indigenous students. It is
hoped that this initiative will allow students from Denison Col-
lege to participate in NAIDOC activities at local schools and
also be a part of Western and State Dance festivals.
The annual Western Region Dance
Festival was held on Thursday 23rd
June at Bathurst Memorial Entertain-
ment Centre. Students from Bathurst
High were involved in performance
and stage management rolls. There
were 4 items performed by our students
in Year 9, 10 & 11 Dance classes as
well as the BHC Dance ensemble. This
was a very exciting day for all students
involved, and allowed them to be ex-
posed to a large range of other dance
pieces from the Western Region.
These students are all to be congratu-
lated on a fantastic performance. Sev-
eral pieces have been sent as auditions
for the NSW State Dance festival. We
are now awaiting to hear if they have
been selected.

Multi-Cultural Day
We celebrated the many cultures mak-
ing up our school with our first Multi-
Cultural Day last Tuesday. Despite wet
and snowy weather, we all had a won-
derful time experiencing various forms
of art, craft, music and food. Students
were thrilled to view so many student
performances on assembly and Ms

mance was so wonderful it has become
the stuff of assembly legend. Well done
to Ms Harper and the team who worked
on the idea to create such an enjoyable
day for all.

Deputy Principal
Recognition for exciting Initiative!
Staff at both campuses of Denison College have been working
hard over an extended period of time to ensure that we are able
to cater for the needs of all of our students, especially since the
introduction of the new school leaving age in January 2010.
Creating partnerships with other agencies is a key strategy in
ensuring that education is relevant and that the skills are trans-
ferable to the workplace.
To this end, Denison College worked with a wide range of non-
school based agencies throughout the latter part of 2010 and
throughout the first part of this year to create the School Within
A School Program. This program, aspects of which have been
trialled during this term in conjunction with Bathurst TAFE,
Central West Community College and Headspace, will be ex-
panded in Term 3 with a view to full implementation in 2012.
As a result of the quality of work that has been done to date
and the importance of this strategy in engaging young people
with education, Denison College has received a significant
grant from the Department of Education and Communities to
support the further development of this program.
I particularly thank Mr Hastings
(Principal, Bathurst High Campus) for
his work in initiating the project and
bringing the various agencies together
and Mr Behan (Program Co-ordinator,
Kelso High Campus) for the outstanding
work he has done in developing the cur-
riculum and coordinating activities.

Astley Cup
Our first round was against Orange. It started
out a great day, normally with driving rain and
wind, the pleasant cold morning start for the
Tennis was greatly appreciated.
TENNIS
With the Tennis sets being fairly even between
both schools, Orange took a lead about half
way through and extended this the longer the
Tennis ran, eventually running out winners 10
sets to 6, 62.5 points to our 37.5. Good perfor-
mances by Darcy Davis as Captain and Jane
Hanrahan kept us in close to Orange HS. New
recruits in James Siegert and Bryson Richards,
who is in Year 7, will be players to look for in
the future.
NETBALL
With Orange being dominant in Netball, we
were always going to struggle to hold our own
against them, despite a home ground ad-
vantage. Orange HS soon skipped away to a
commanding lead and that‘s where they stayed.
They were far too dominant across the court,
eventually running our winners 61-14, 81-19
Astley Cup points. Our young and developing
team should be able to do better over the next
few years with many players in year 9 and 10.
Never did any of our players give up through-
out the game, a trait that is in every Bathurst
HC team.
BASKETBALL
This was where we were expected to start turn-
ing the tide of the points score, our boys having
beat Orange in the past. Strong performances
by our senior players kept Orange HS looking
for how they could contain our scorers. Strong
performances by Western Region reps; Jake
Single, Jayden Taylor, Toby Ivanovic and
Wade Grantham lead the way. The final score
of 58-32. 64-36 Astley Cup points, in our fa-
vour was expected to be higher, something that
Ms Ferris impressed on the boys at the end of
the game for the next round against a much
stronger Dubbo outfit.
HOCKEY
This was another sport that has been dominated
by Orange HS over the other two schools for
many years, historically having a much strong-
er side and many Western Region reps. The
first half was a very interesting game with Or-
ange HS coming out and looking very confi-
dent in the way they played. The only change
was that our players were equally fired up and
this was shown in the manner that they at-
tacked the Orange HS team. The game was
very even, the ball being moved freely, by both
teams, around the field. There were several
scoring opportunities that both teams had, both
teams scoring a goal in the first half. What was
something that the Orange players didn‘t count
on was Bathurst at one stage leading from a
Stephanie White goal to go 2 – 1 up. Orange
played scrambling hockey and eventually
scored the equaliser in the second half. It was
very close to the final siren with a draw a fan-
tastic result. All girls played very well, keeping
a much stronger team to a draw able to set up
the team for day 2.
Day 2 ATHLETICS
On a calm morning with ominous clouds in the
distance Orange HS showed up looking to im-
prove on their 59 point lead from day 1. Our
athlete‘s had other ideas and quickly showed
their dominance, winning many of the first
events; our sprinters Doug Hewitt and Kandy
Kennedy winning the 100m, distance runners
Jaydem Tumeth-Mcleod winning the 1500 and
Jessica Fearnley 800. This set the pace of the
morning with many of our athletes winning
events. Sam Callan the boys shot put and both
relay teams being the icing on the cake for the
morning. Point score of 79-21 was very one
sided and something not normally seen in the
athletics between the schools.
BOYS FOOTBALL
Proctor park was hopefully going to be the
scene for the continued fight back being behind
by 1 point going into the first soccer game.
Bathurst dominated across the paddock with
many scoring opportunities not being taken
advantage of, Jaydem Tumeth-Mcleod eventu-
ally scoring to make the score 1-nil, 67-33
Astley Cup points.
GIRLS FOOTBALL
The girls with a 33 point lead going into the
game could play without pressure on them
winning and this should have happened, having
many opportunities to move the ball down to
the goal. Coach Baillie impressing on the girls
to have more control over passes and shots on
goal. From a handball in the goal square, a
penalty shot taken by Jane Hanrahan made the
eventual final score 1 – nil. Another 67-33
score line and a 67 point lead into the Rugby
League.
RUGBY LEAGUE
With a much depleted Orange HS side due to
injury and sickness meant the game almost did
not occur. In a reduced numbers and time for-
mat a game was eventually played at Carring-
ton park. In the 10 a side format and 25 min
half structure, a change not seen in Astley Cup
history. The game got under way with Bathurst
HC dominant from the kick off. Our recent
Greater Western reps, who travelled to Toronto
on the central coast for State trials, led the way
with a superstar performance from Doug
Hewitt, instrumental in directing Brady Chesh-
ire, Blake Seager, Luke Carpenter and the rest
of the team around the paddock. In a very one
sided affair that Orange HS could not match-
with a final score of 66-17, 80-20 Astley Cup
points.
The eventual score was a resounding success to
Bathurst HC of 464-336 Astley Cup points.
Round 2 Bathurst HC vs Dubbo Senior Col-
lege.
DAY 1 — DUBBO
Dubbo was a very different story to that in
Bathurst. There were losses in each of the 4
sports on day 1.
Tennis was very one sided, 13-3 sets. Basket-
ball closer for us and a great game considering
the amount of Western Region talent in their
team we lead each quarter until running out of
steam in the last quarter; 49-41. Hockey was a
sport that was expected to do well and with a
score of 3-2 to Dubbo, unexpected for the girls
coming off a draw against a much stronger
team the week before.
Finally the Rugby League was expected to be
highlight of the sporting calendar, both teams
being the best in the region. Our team looked
out of sorts from the kick off and Dubbo SC
took no time to capitalise on this by skipping
away to a lead that could not be caught back.
With many bounces of the ball not going our

way the eventual score at half time of 12-0 was
a good result. The final score of 42-16 indicat-
ed a one sided affair in the second half. A bro-
ken hand to star forward Blake Seager didn't
help us.
Day 2 — DUBBO
This was a day that we could make up points
and that was how the Athletics team took it,
even Bryce Hitchcock a spectator throwing the
shot. Dubbo SC beat us in a close result 57-43.
The girls and boys football would have to
score at least 4-nil in each game to give us a
chance, and what games they were. Both our
teams were dominant across the field and un-
lucky not to score at will. The girls won 2-nil
with 2 goals from Kira Mendes in a game that
could have easily been double that score line.
The boys won 2-1, an unlucky goal from a
miscommunication which should have been
much more in our favour, goals from a cracker
shot by Blake Aubin and Jayden Tumeth-
Mcleod finishing well for the second.
After these two sports, we trailed by 66 points
going into the Netball. The Netball team then
had to win by a ratio of at least 6 to 1. The
game started well with our younger players not
being out muscled or pushed around. Some-
thing impressed upon them by new coach Ms
Hennessy. The game was a little one sided
with the Dubbo SC team containing much
older players. The final score of 48-20 a good
example of how our young team could perform
in the coming years.
The overall score of 454 — 346 to Dubbo SC
and an overall lead 108 points was well de-
served from them, a much superior team over
the two days. This coming week Dubbo SC
travel to Orange HS to play the third round of
the Astley Cup. There is still a slim chance
that Bathurst HC could win but Orange HS
would need to play a spoiling role in deliver-
ing a win to them and a point‘s victory to us.
All the best to Orange HS for the coming week
I say!
The Astley Cup organisation is something
which is helped by many people and organisa-
tions around Bathurst. I would like to thank
Newman‘s buses, Jones Bros buses for
transport, The parents of the team members for
carting them into school at very early hours of
the morning, Radio 2BS and the Western Ad-
vocate for the great media exposure over the 2
weeks, Referee‘s including Nick Lander, Da-
mien Carter, the Bathurst Regional Council,
the staff of Bathurst HC and everyone else in
the local community who helps me put on this
show each year, see you in 2012.

Chess Team and Public Speaking
P&C
Chess Team
Well done to the Bathurst High School chess team
who were successful in their win against Lithgow
High School last Thursday the 9th of June. The team
consisting of Tealor Irwin, Xianghon Meng, Sarvin
Sadrzadeh and Ryan McNarey played exceptionally
well, coming away with three wins and one draw.
Well done team!!!!
Public speaking
On the 31st of May, Anne Murray, Ricky Daymond
and Annabel Meadley represented Bathurst High
School in the CWA public speaking competition.
They all represented the school well and Ricky Day-
mond achieved a highly commended, placing him in
the next round at Parkes later this month. Well done
to all students!
Over the last two terms Scott Matheson
has had some fantastic performances with
Golf within the Western Region. At Cowra
Gold Club at the end of Term 1, Scott rep-
resented Bathurst High along with Tom
Mackey and Blake Arthur. Scott, with dad
Norm on the bag, was able to play very
well throughout the 18 holes against many
of the best golf players in the Western Re-
gion. Throughout the round Scott was
playing very good golf, particularly with
the testing finish holes back to the club
house.
Overall, Scott was able to shoot a fantastic
round of 71, 1 under par and his first ever
sub-par round. This is a fantastic result
considering Scott‘s age and the players
that he was playing against.
With Scott shooting this great result he
was the eventual winner not only on handi-
cap, but overall by several strokes. This
lead Scott to be the eventual overall West-
ern Region Champion, and at such a young
age an excellent result. Scott now plays the
CHS Golf Carnival next week, week 10, at
Dubbo Golf Club. Best of luck to Scott for
this competition from all the staff and stu-
dents at Bathurst High Campus.

On top of the Trade Training construction in Keppel Street the terraces have also become a construction zone as Joss Management
Services upgrade the terraces on the southern side of the oval. The photo shows the work in progress with the two rock artists Charlie

Year 6 students from Bathurst West, Eglinton and Bathurst Public Schools visited
Bathurst High Campus last week for Iexplore. They spent half of their day learn-
ing Japanese language and culture and the other half of the day was spent doing
fantastic experiments in the science laboratory. They had a wonderful time and
this follows up their day working in TAS last term. These days give the students
a great opportunity to become familiar with the High School before they come
along next year to start their secondary schooling.

Waste to Art
Waste to Art is a community project encouraging all artists from
school-aged to professional to showcase works made from reused
and recycled waste materials.
In term one, the Year Nine Visual Arts students produced a success-
ful collection of engaging abstract paintings using found objects and
recycled materials from their immediate environment. These paint-
ings were showcased in the Waste to Art competition at the Bathurst
Memorial Entertainment Centre in May.
Congratulations to all the Year Nine students who entered the com-
petition, also a special mention to Finlay Murphy whose work
‗Eggplant popo-lopolis the 3rd‘ (pictured) won the 2D High School
division. His work is currently being exhibited in Grenfell.
Here‘s an artist statement by Fin.
Title of artwork: Eggplant plop-o-lopilis the 3rd.
Who inspired us? Kurt Schwitters inspired me, as his still live art-
works were amazing in their own way.
What materials did we use and why? I used found objects, going
for a rustic vs computer technology theme, because I thought it
would be sick, and be a bit like old versus new.
Why you made the work: I had to for school, it was a requirement
to complete the topic, but that doesn’t mean I didn't enjoy doing it.
Mr. James Ferguson
