Transcript of Batanes, a cultural view via its houses.

HOUSESBatanes

Made of Thatch, wood planks, wood

studs, reed, or a combinations of them

Usually smaller and built with less height

compared to those made of stone walls.

Limited to single story structures

May also be used as temporary dwelling

during harvesting season for fishing and

agricultural activities

Long, narrow wooden platforms are

built alongside the posts

This sheltering structure is more commonly

used to store boats and sailing equipment (i.e.

Nets, Sails etc.)

Its named is derived from

the ivatan word for cogon,

hence the materials used to

make its walls.

If used for permanent dwelling, the

jinjin would make use of plank to

create wooden floors. If temporary,

typical soil floor is present

The only house to

use sliding panels

Presence of a mud and

stone base helps even

the ground and

preserves the wood

parts of the house.
